Open pdf file within the client's Reader, not in a browser, HOW ?

Hi All,
I have a web application written in VB in wich  an user can request to open a pdf file stored on the server.
I'm looking for a script that will force the requested pdf to be opened in client's Reader and not in a browser's Reader plugin,
Thanks, Yan

Do you use Group Policies in an Active Directory Structure?
If yes see here:
http://www.gruppenrichtlinien.de/adm/Adobe.zip
extract, rename adobe.txt to adobe.adm
It is in German, but I explain:
Open your Group Policies Management Console.
Go to Group Policy Objects
Rightclick->New
Give an Name eg. Adobe Settings
Rightclick on the new one->edit
Go to Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates - > rightclick -> add Templates
Browse to adobe.adm and open it.
Now you have
Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Adobe -> All Reader and Writer Versions
Go to the one(s) you need
Set "Browser Integration" to disabled or inactive.
Then connect this new Policy to your Computers-OU

    This is not a problem that can be addressed with LiveCycle Designer script. Designer or Acrobat script has context once the PDF is open, which does not help you. Perhaps a solution can be found in Windows Script Host. I have not touched WSH in a long time but I recall that is possible to do something like...
    ' Get a Reader instance by ProgID
    Set obj = GetObject(,"AcroExch.Document")
    ' Check if an instance of Reader is not already running. If an instance is running, create a new instance.
    If TypeName(obj) <> "Document" Then
        Set obj = CreateObject("AcroExch.Document")
    End If
    or
    ' Start the application (Reader) associated with the file type
    Set obj = GetObject("c:\foobar.pdf")

  • Opening pdf files from the internet. through reader

    hi, i am able to open pdf files from email and any pdf files i create. i just cant access any pdf files from the internet...it closes the page completely. can anyone help?

    I have a similar problem when trying to e-mail from a pdf program.  For one thing, I cannot save anything on it and then when I tried to send it (with filled in forms), it arrives blank.

  • What can I do to rectify the situation in which Firefox will not open pdf files in the browser, even though I have already used all the help suggestions to no avail?

    I have tried everything Mozilla has suggested. Still when I click on a pdf, I get the message that the browser cannot open a pdf. I have gone through the help protocol, and it does not work.
    I have uninstalled Firefox and reinstalled it, and still not able to open pdf files within the browser.
    What else do I do, except go to IE or Chrome and just leave Firefox completely???

    A possible cause is the presence of a PDF plugin from an older Adobe Reader plugin in the plugins folder in the Firefox program folder.

  • Cannot open pdf files while the Reader instance is running

    Today I suddenly noticed that if I try to open pdf file while the Reader instance is already running (even if it has no pdf files open), the cursor just blinks one or two times without any further activities. So the only way to open files now is by closing the previous instance and starting the new one. I think this problem started to appear after upgrading to 11.0.3. I am using Windows 7 32 bit.

    I narrowed the problem: it happens if the file is in a directory which is a join point on the NTFS file system (i.e. a link to another directory), where the link source is in turn a join point itself (i.e. we have a two-level NTFS directory link). As this is rare, it could be not a problem of the particular version of the Reader, it just probably happened by coincidence that after upgrading the first directory I accessed was of this kind.

  • I removed chrome 10 and newly installed FF4 final, and I can't read PDF files within the browser. There was no problem in Chrome.

    I removed chrome 10 and newly installed FF4 final, and I can't read PDF files within the browser. There was no problem in Chrome. I can't even see the acrobat reader plugin in the plugins page. Acrobat 10 is already installed in my PC. Every time I try to read a PDF file on the web, FF tries to download it instead.

    As recommended above by Bernd Alheit, I posted this on the Adobe Reader forum. There, I received the advice to repair the installation under the help menu, which I did and it fixed the problem.
    Similar to your solution but found it's a fix found under "HELP" menu and not Add/Remove.
    Thank you.

  • Help - "Acrobat is being used by another application and cannot open PDF files until the other application is closed."

    Hello,
    I searched this site and google for this error terminology and come up dry.  I support a user who has been for years using Acrobat 5 (yes, I know...) to read files in a client DB program, as well as other PDF files on their PC.  In the last week or so, they have started gatting this error "Acrobat is being used by another application and cannot open PDF files until the other application is closed." any time they attempt to open a PDF file attached to an email (via Outlook).
    It is my understanding that they cannot upgrade to a newer version of Acrobat because of limitations of their client software, but had not previously had any issues viewing PDF notes from the DB, and PDF attachments in their email.
    I have tried uninstalling and re-installing, as well as tried using Adobe Reader 7 & 9 in conjunction with Acrobat to try to get around this issue, but have not been successful.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Jesse

    I don't have an answer to your technical problem. The product I assume is Acrobat that you are talking about (based on the post title), Adobe is the company name. This is a good place to ask questions on Acrobat if folks can figure out what you are talking about. They will ask for the product version number (like AA9.3.3), operating system, and other applications if appropriate. Also, just what you are doing that generates the message.
    As for Adobe, you are not likely to get an answer from them here in the user forum. You will be lucky if you can get an answer if you can contact them and not be on hold for more than an hour (sorry, this is why a lot of folks end up in the forum).
    So, to help others try to answer your question, what are the products and versions involved? What OS? What are you doing when the message comes up.

  • I tried opening a pdf file and I set it to use always and firefox which did not work, I was wondering how to undo that and what I should use to open pdf files in the future?

    I was attempting to open a document from a frequently used site, I had never been on, on my new mac however. I attempted to open the pdf file and was given the option of which program to use to open it, I mistakenly clicked use always and firefox as the program with which to open pdf files. I do not know how to undo this or what I should do in the future to access the pdf files.

    Hi Melfour-
    Here is a Support article detailing how to work with your Firefox PDF preferences:

  • Firefox will not open pdf files & changes the options/applications settings?

    At first, with default settings, Firefox would not open pdf files & came up only with a blank screen & no file reference. Going to options/applications & changing the default to a new installation of Adobe Reader still brought up a blank screen but this time with the file ref. Oddly though, attempting to open any pdf file would then change the setting under applications back to Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox). But this doesn't work. So what do I need to do to get Firefox to open pdf files correctly using Adobe Reader?

    See if either of these support article help you.

  • How to embed and open PDF files within excel

    I constantly need to embed PDF files onto Excel documents as well as extract/open/view PDF files from Excel documents. I am unable to do so with a macbook, i know that there is a workaround but it's such a tedious process. Is there a software i can buy or setting that i can do so that i can embed and open PDF files easily as i need to view these files multiple times a day for work.
    please advise

    Download and install Adobe Reader: Adobe Reader Install for all versions
    Open the PDF file using it. If security restrictions don't prevent it you could also print it.

  • Error opening PDF files on the network

    I have documents in PDF format on my internal network, but when I open them directly from the network using the Adobe Reader, I get the following message:
    "There was an error opening this document. The network path was not found". But this occurs in only a few users, and possibly users who did not have this error, they have. We found that uninstalling and reinstalling the software solves the problem, but then it returns. Is there any explanation?

    Adobe Reader 11.0.09;
    Microsoft Windows 7 Professional;
    I'm accessing the file from a local network drive. The file is located in one of our servers.
