Open / Save Dialog Bug in Lion
Hi,
I am currently pretty annoyed by a nasty bug that I experience when using Mac OS X Lion. Whenever I want to load an image / video / document or save in various programs, the program automatically crashes. I have reproduced this bug with iMovie 11, iPhoto 11, openOffice, google chrome (when trying to save images) and Seasky Video Converter. Importing via drag and drop seems to work at least for Seasky, but whenever I want to click on a routine that relies on the open / save dialogue, the program crashes.
Here are some Crash Reports:

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application unistaller. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Can't drag sidebar items in "open/save" dialog boxes - Mountain Lion
(First time poster) Using Mountain Lion 10.8.3 and InDesign CS6. Having errors. First was that smart folders made the Open/ Save dialog boxes crash when referenced in the "Favorites" section of sidebar. Next, and more serious, error, is that I cannot drag/ rearrange my sidebar items in this view. AKA I cannot take "Favorites" on the sidebar and drag that section below "Devices" or "Shared" or "Media" like I normally can in Finder or any other app for that matter. Recently installed SIMBL and "Colorful Sidebar" app but uninstalled and removed bundle file from SIMBL plugins folder in order to try and resolve this. Hard to say if this problem started before or after the third-party plugin was installed, but regardless, it's gone now, and still having problems. Help please! Thanks,
None of these are InDesign questions.

Mavericks vs Yosemite open/save dialog : Yosemite BUG
Hi,
I noticed a bug after upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite regarding open/save dialogs.
I Googled this problem and find nothing related.
So I decided to make a comparison with fresh installs and latest updates:
- Mavericks 10.9.5
- Yosemite 10.10.2
Yosemite has clearly a performance bug on open/save dialogs.
On Mavericks, the animation is smooth and rapid.
On Yosemite, the animation lags and is not smooth at all.
I made a video on YouTube regarding this problem.
You can check it : http://youtu.be/t2WTaeKI3go
I would like to know if others have this problem and if there is a solution.
My configuration is :

Open/Save Dialog, 9 min. Beachball Freeze
I am running OS 10.10.2 on a March 2009 iMac with 8GB RAM and 1TB HD.
PROBLEM: While working in Illustrator 18 (CC 2014), if I choose File > Open, the Open dialog appears but I get the spinning beachball for 9 minutes before file contents appear. I don't have the same problem in Photoshop or any other app. But after Googling, I see that a number of people have posted similar Console Log messages (see below) when using in a variety of apps in Yosemite, even in Apple's own Mail app. This tells me the root problem may not be specific to Illustrator, even though it only affects Illustrator in my case currently.
WHAT I TRIED:
1) Moved all Adobe Illustrator related PLISTS and preference files and folders to the Desktop and then launched Illustrator. I saw Illustrator rebuild new prefs files and all settings reverted back to stock. This proves my moving of the prefs to the Desktop was successful to cause a rebuild of new prefs and PLISTS. Even so, the BeachBall freeze appeared when I did a File > Open.
2) Rebooted with SHIFT held down (Safe Mode). But the beachball problem remains.
3) Disconnected all USB devices except keyboard/mouse, and turned off WiFi and BlueTooth, and even yanked my Ethernet cable. I also turned off Time Machine and Default Folder. But the problem remains, even through a reboot.
4) I removed DropBox and GoogleDrive and I closed all apps other than Illustrator, but to no avail.
5) Tried a Guest User, but that doesn't work with Adobe Apps. Ditto for a Standard user. You get an error dialog when you try to launch Adobe apps with that kind of user. So I then created an Admin user. Illustrator's Open dialog box displays files perfectly, as normal! A NEW ADMIN USER FIXES THE PROBLEM!
So a new Admin user fixes the beachball problem in the Open dialog, but for my normal Admin user there's the 9 min. beachball problem. And yet, SAFE MODE doesn't fix the problem while in my normal User. And neither does deleting Illustrator prefs. So it's clear there's still something lurking in my primary user account that is absent in the new Admin user account. But what? And how can I find it? (Migrating everything to a new User account is no easy task.)

I get the exact same set of messages that you see above every time I try to reproduce the problem, simply by doing a File > Open in Illustrator.
I assume AFP is Apple File Protocol? But what "server" is it trying so desperately in vain to "Get"? And why is a DNS resolver being used?
Anyway, as you can see from the Console log above, the beachball in the Open/Save dialog in Illustrator goes away after 534 seconds (about 9 min.). But it reappears each time I try to go to a new folder on my HD within that Open dialog. Each time takes exactly 534 seconds each time for the stupid beachball to go away when changing folders in the Open dialog.
This beachball freeze (for 9 min.) in Illustrator's Open dialog occurred every once and a while over the last several weeks, but now it consistently happens. And no, I've not installed any new software on my iMac other than Yosemite updates.
Once again, I would prefer to fix the root problem in my primary user account rather than migrate to a New User even though I now know a new Admin user account resolves the problem.
Please help. With regard to my cry for help...
Pretty please?
Here are links to other apps which show the same Console Log messages that I am seeing, proving this is not an issue exclusive to a single app:

OS 10.10 & Time Capsule woes
OS 10.9.2 & NAS woes

If you read through all the above like I did, you're probably very tired by now. But if you had the same problem as I do, you would do anything to resolve it, hence my post here. So again, I plead for your kind help and attention to this problem!
The above links do tell me one thing, that a "network error" is at the heart of the Console log messages and my problem. And that remains true even when I've disconnected from the network entirely, leading me to believe that this is some sort of CACHING BUG. For truly, there is a Time Capsule at my office, and I do use Time Machine (although not saving to the TC but instead to an external FW HD). So... It is my guess that Yosemite has cached some network data it doesn't like and tries to access that data from a cache when the Open Dialog appears in Illustrator. But WHY ILLUSTRATOR in my case? It makes no sense to me at all. I would think it should consistently occur in the Open dialogs of all apps, but it's only in Illustrator.
I did have problems with my Time Machine backups after putting Yosemite on my iMac, but those issues were resolved in the 10.10.2 update.
In any case, if indeed it is a CACHING BUG, how then would I clear that stupid, evil cache?
Again, I would appreciate your kind thoughts and advice.
Thank you! -
Open/save dialog boxes stuck at (too small) default size
I've been having a relatively small issue with Mountain Lion that has become a big hassle. In past versions of OS X, whenever I'd resize an open/save dialog box in an application, it would be that size the next time I went to open/save. In Mountain Lion, however, those dialog boxes always default to the smallest possible size (which is too small to read a filename longer than a few characters). so I have to resize the dialog box — every time! I open and save a lot of files, so this gets pretty tedious. This doesn't seem to happen in apple programs, but it definitely does in the Office Suite and the Adobe Creative Suite, especially in CS4 Photoshop and Illustrator. Might be I can fix it by myself but I can't imagine where I may dig it.

Open/Save Dialogs: How to Set Min. Sidebar Width?
I am now running Lion. I cannot remember if I had this problem under Snow Leopard, but I certainly have it now. Whenever I bring up the Open/Save dialog within some apps (for example, Illustrator CS5.0), no matter how large I've made that dialog overall, the sidebar width is always too narrow such that all the names inside the sidebar aren't perfectly visible horizontally. Yes, I can make the sidebar wider by hand for a single session. But if I close the dialog and open it again, the sidebar becomes narrow again.
How can I define a minimum width for the Open/Save dialog sidebar, that all apps will obey perpetually?Perhaps, but in my many years of online forum participation, I've found that people are lazy (myself included at times). And unless we exert ourselves, we often don't post something for the benefit of others, even though we may have the answer. As such, a somewhat provocative follow-up post, while having the potential to upset some, is usually sufficient to encourage at least one person to stand up and post a potential solution. It got you to post a response (even though it was not the answer I sought), which I appreciate. Hopefully, someone with the answer will be able to post back here. I am a believer of "where there's a will there's a way," so no doubt someone out there far more clever than I has discovered a fix for it.
I therefore look forward to hearing the thoughts of others on this issue. -
Servers in Open/Save dialogs
Apologies if this has been asked/answered before... I noticed an issue in the open/save dialogs in Leopard.
Say I want to attach a file in Mail that's sitting on a server or another computer. In Tiger, I would navigate to the server within the dialog, double click on it, then enter the user/pass and connect to the share I'm looking for.
In Leopard, it seems I can no longer browse and connect to a server from within the open/save dialogs. Unless I'm already connected, I can only see the public shares without the option to "Connect As..." another user. So now I have to switch over to the Finder, navigate to the server, connect to it with the proper credentials, then get back over to Mail, navigate back to the share and choose my file.
Is this just a bug I'm noticing or is this the way it works in Leopard? I'd really like to be able to not have to switch to/from the Finder just to mount network shares to open from or save files to in another app.See if macjack's solution works for you:

[SOLVED] Kate/kwrite open/save dialog broken in 15.04
Has anyone else encountered this? Downgrading kate and ktexteditor to 14.12-3 did not help. katepart is not even on a new version.
I was unsure whether KDE apps have a universal open/save dialog but it appears that only kate-related things have this problem (I tried kolourpaint also and it works fine).
Kate seems to break in a rather fundamental way every new release. It would be helpful if bugfix releases were pushed, as upstream never has these bugs (I've been reporting to KDE bugtracking for the last few releases).

My Mac has slowed down to an absolute crawl. I have reinstalled the OS, run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, removed my preferences folder to see if something in there was actin' up, I've repaired the permissions, etc... Yet in any application (whether it's Photoshop CS 2, Safari, TextEdit, doesn't matter), if I hit "open" from within that application... no exaggeration... it can take anywhere between 45 seconds to a little over a minute for the dialog box to finally appear!
The last thing I want to do is nuke my machine. I am so tired of that being the solution whenever something can't be fixed.
Has anyone run into this? Does anyone have any ideas what to do to fix this problem without nuking the machine?
(this hasn't been a problem at all until, maybe 3 months ago or so... and I've been running Tiger since it was released)Holy cow. I am in complete shock.
...got up this morning, saw the suggestion 'bout the iDisk, figured I'd give it a try...
That was it!!! I've had a .mac account for years, have had my iDisk on my desktop for as long as I can remember. I wonder if something from software update somehow made my machine and the iDisk go "screwy" 'cause it started getting excruciatingly bad just a few months ago.
Thank you, thank you!! My machine has received a gigantic speed boost across the board, and the open/save dialog boxes now appear instantly when I call upon them, all my apps quit instantly now too. This is amazing! [breathes huge sigh of relief] -
Open/Save Dialog does not show new files?
Say you are working on a logic file in a folder and you have
a few audio and movie files in that folder, and you launch
Logic and via the open/save dialog window you add a few
files to your song and in that dialog window you can see
all the files in that folder.
Then, in the Finder you add a few more files and movies to
that folder and again use the open/save dialog window to
add more files BUT the new files you added since launching
logic are NOT SHOWN in the dialog window ! ?
What's the deal with that?
Every other app can show files added since the launch of the
application, why not Logic?
PowerBook G4 1GHz Mac OS X (10.3.9)project manager
um, yeah.
Should not need the project manager simply to see new files added to a directory in a Open/Save dialog window since last opening the app.
I did a scan, a extended scan, opened all the little turn down arrows of the
full path to the directory I knew there to be the new files and yes, Logic
shows them there in the "Project manager".
BUT Logic still does not show the files in the Open/Save dialog windows.
This is strange because even simple app like TextEdit can show
new files in it's Open/Save dialog function windows without the need of
a project manager.
I have to quit and re-launch each time to see any new files? -
Open/Save Dialog Box Freeze
Hello,
Since updating to 10.4.7, the open/save dialog box freezes (beachball) after selecting a folder. Can anyone please point me in the right direction in solving my issue.
I used the ComboPPC updater and then ran Cocktail to repair permissions, cron scripts, clear caches etc.
I recently posted about the Finder freezing instead I should have mentioned that it was the Open/Save dialog box.

Sort-by-type for column view in open/save dialog boxes?
Hello all,
I've done a fairly good search both on Google and in these forums and can't seem to find this question addressed. When I go to open or save something (in Preview, for example) I prefer to use Column View in the dialog box, since it is easy to see and navigate the folder structure. However, Column View always shows up sorted by name, even if I specified in Finder that the folder be sorted by type. Because of this, I have to scroll down and hunt for subfolders rather than having them conveniently listed at the top.
My question is this: is there a way to get Column View to sort by type in the open/save dialog boxes? (The Command+J that works in regular Finder does nothing in these dialog boxes.)
Thanks! No. Column view will only sort by name. If you wanted to put a space before each folder name, then they will sort to the top. Sorting by Kind will put folders above files, but it will also put anything else except files at the top. If there are only folders, however, that would put them first in the sort list.

Finder sidebar not updating with applications open/save dialog boxes
Hi all,
I've searched the threads and can't seem to find an answer to this recurring issue that I'm having.
I save folders to current projects in the Finder sidebar. However, I find that when I try to find those sidebar folders from within the open/save dialog applications that it is often times and old version of the sidebar. In the image linked below note the Finder sidebar on the left and the InDesign CS sidebar on the right. The list of folders is different. The version via InDesign seems to be an older cached version.
Screen capture: http://www.fabianross.com/forum-images/screen-capture.png
Does anyone know how to update this cached version to see the new list of folders?
Thanks,
JerryTry deleting this file: com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. See if that helps...
Seems to me that Adobe is very picky about where the files are kept on the hard drive. You might not want them in the Sidebar. Whenever you do an Adobe software update, the installer needs the path to where those files go. If it's missing in action, it can wreak havoc.
Make sure when you do Adobe updates, if there is a link included or a Read Me file, check that out first before installing anything.
Run Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions BEFORE and AFTER any software updates:
Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

Snow Leopard sidebar width in open/save dialog boxes
I think I found the answer to the infuriating non adjustable sidebar width in the open/save dialog box.
It requires finding the plist of every program you want to change (I know... annoying)
Close the application if open. Open the plist in Property List Editor (which is the default anyway so just double click) and delete any line which begins NSNavPanelExpanded...
Reopen the application and the sidebar now mirrors the settings in Finder (where the sidebar stays adjusted if you alt+click drag it).
I haven't restarted yet so don't know if it will stick but I don't see why it shouldn't, and I don't know if it will reflect further finder changes to the sidebar width. In the case of Photoshop it looks like NSNavBrowserPreferedColumnContentWidth also needs to be deleted, or a new value entered.
So it might be different for different programs -
Find in Open/Save Dialog boxes
The find in open/save dialog boxes seems to return unexpected results. Say I have two folders one called "Down under" and the other called "Down under 2". If I ask it to find "down" it only returns the file "Down under 2" and other files whose content may have the word "down" in them. The folder "Down under 2" only has jpegs in it. None have "Down" in the file name.
So what gives?Surely someone knows what is going on in spotlight. If I use Easyfind for the search it comes up with both files folders correctly.
