Open SQL (difference between 2 dates) - DATEDIFF function

Hello Experts,
In my DB I created a TABLE with a column "<b>GIORNO</b>" that contains dates (in format 'yyyy-mm-dd'). I need to get the difference between the current day and the most recent date inserted into the table.
I'm using a Java DAO class to execute a query.
My problem is that the function <b>DATEDIFF(a,b)</b> explained in help.sap.com (http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/en/d2/f61996bb5e11d2a97100a0c9449261/content.htm) is not accepted by my portal..
I wrote a query that contains <b>DATEDIFF( MAX(GIORNO) , ? )</b> where '?' is the current date..
And my system return to me the error message:
<i>SQL syntax error: the token "(" was not expected here</i> (referring to the <u>dateDiff '('</u> )
In some forum I found that someone uses <b>DATEDIFF(a,b, getdate())</b> but it still does not work.....
Any suggestion??
Best Regards

Hi Andy,
thanks for your fast answer..
SYSDATE does not work because is an Oracle SQL function..
Anyway I think that the problem is the DATEDIFF function that is not recognised (infact the error message says that it does not expect the '('...
I show to you the error message using <b>DATEDIFF(MAX(GIORNO), SYSDATE)</b> :

    Hi,
Data base structure is global decalaration you can reffer this structure in any of your developments, when ever you cahange this structure the changes automatically will get updated in all the programs.
coming to structures in program it is local to your program only, if you want to change the structure again you have to open the program and do the necessary changes.

    Hi,

    1. Can a function return only single value?? cant we return multiple values?Yes, a function can only return a single value.
If the return type is some kind of collection or data structure, then that 1 collection or data structure can, of course, actually contain many sep[arate values.
If you want to return multiple values, use a PROCEDURE with multiple OUT arguments.  (Functions can have OUT arguments, too, but avoid defining functions with OUT arguments.  It can cause a lot of confusion.)
    2. Can we use 'out' parameter and 'return' clause at a time in the same functionSure, but don't take my word for it.  Try it and see.

  • Re: DIfference between Schemas, PCRS' FUnctions and Operations

    Dear SAPExperts,
Can anybody pls tell me what is difference between Schemas, PCRS' Functions and Operations.
    Thanx in advance
    Regards
    Aniruddha

    Hi Aniruddha
When the payroll driver is executed (for ex: PC00_M40_CALC for INDIA is executed) the schema IN00 (standard schema) is executed and it calls certain functions (functions may use Rules. Rules contain Operation) and also subschemas.
Functions could be of four types
    1. Performing some payroll computations (E.g. INEPF function calculates the PF amount of an employee during payroll run)
    2. Calling rules (E.g. P0045 function calls a rule INLN to compute the loan details of a personnel number).
    3. Getting data from Infotypes (E.g. P0581 will get the data from Infotype-581 for payroll processing).
    4. For some decisions. (E.g. IF & ENDIF function is used to execute as per the true and false decisions) etc.
When the PY is executed SAP uses lot of Internal Tables to store data and also provides data to other internal tables.
The read and change access to Internal Tables is enabled using functions that are executed in a personnel calculation schema and using operations that are executed in personnel calculation rules.
The following is just an attempt to provide some info on how Functions are processed during the PY Run. For ex: (functionality of subschema XIN0 and INBD)
    1. INITIALIZATION OF PAYROLL: When the Payroll is executed first the subschema XIN0 is called,   This subschema comprises the following main steps:
    I.     Specify program type (payroll or evaluation)
II.     Set switch for database updates (YES/NO) all database updates are controlled via this switch (otherwise simulation)
III.     Only infotypes from the HR master record which apply to the selected personnel number are read.
IV.     All Time Management infotypes are imported.
    V.     Specify check against control record PA03 (test or live).
    2. READ BASIC DATA: Once the Initialization of Payroll is successful, the subschema INBD is called. This subschema reads the Basic data of an employee who is there in the Payroll execution. Basic Data includes, determining Employee Name, Reading Work Center/Basic Pay Data, Setting Financial Year Dates and Allowance Grouping Tables, Reading Previous Employment Tax Details, Reading Housing (HRA/CLA/COA), Reading Exemptions, Reading Income from Other Sources, Reading Section 80 Deductions, Reading Investment Details (Sec 88), Reading Provident Fund Contributions, Reading Other Statutory Deductions, Reading Car and Conveyance, Reading Long Term Reimbursements, Read ID Details. Function GON checks whether all the master data has been imported, no further processing of schema will occur unless certain data is present.
The Subschema INBD calls the following functions in order to read the Basic Data:
    ENAME :
Function ENAME reads the last valid name of the employee in the payroll period. The formatting used for the country in question is used when displaying this name.
    WPBP
If an employee receives a pay increase within a payroll period, the Basic Pay infotype (0008) is changed and delimited as of a specific date. Two data records exist for one payroll period.
During payroll, the system writes the Basic Pay wage type to the results table with two different indicators. These split indicators are a link to the WPBP table that contains the relevant values. The system takes into consideration both data records for the corresponding partial periods when calculating remuneration.
    ININI
    P0580
    P0581
    P0582
    P0584
    P0585
    P0586
    P0587
    P0588
    P0583
    P0590
    P185I
    GON :
Function GON checks whether all the master data has been imported. No further processing of the schema will occur unless certain data is present. Checking procedures vary from country to country. There must always, however, be a work center (P007).
[Def. of Functions, Rules and Operations (copied from Raju's answer)
Schema is a collection of functions
A Rule is a collection of operations.
An operation is a very basic piece of logic that is used, mostly, to manipulate wage types

  • Difference between procedure and function

    hi
please give solution to below discussion:
Interviewer: What is the difference between Procedure and Function ?
Myself: Procedure may or may not return a value and can return multiple values and Function must return a value.
Interviewer : Can function return multiple values ?
myself: Yes, It can return multiple values.
Interviewer: Then, there is no need to use procedures any more, according to your previous answer (function can return multiple values) "we can do all the things by using procedures by using functions". Then why there is differentiation between procedure and function ?
myself : no reply (simply frustated at this question)
The above is conversation between me and interviewer.
Please suggest me what would be my reply to above topic.
In one book i find that using functions we can return multiple values but it is poor programming practice.
why this is a programming practice ?

Another difference is function must return something. There is no such restriction on procedure. In fact, a procedure CANNOT contain an expression in its RETURN statement.

  • Difference between Dates: BW Query???

    Hello all,
A.I have to get the difference between dates i.e Date1 and Date2.
I have used a 2 formula variables for each one of them with Replacement path - Key - number as the settings.
When i execute the difference between the 2 formula variables, i get inconsistent results if the dates are from 2 different months.
    Example(Correct Result)
    Date1 = 14.02.2005
    Date2 = 10.02.2005
    Result = 4
    Example(Incorrect Result)???????
    Date1 = 14.02.2005
    Date2 = 10.01.2005
    Result = 104
Iam know that system is converting the date as a number like 20040214 and 22040110 and just substracts.....This is not correct....any solution to circmvent this problem???
B.If iam using a user-exit for variables, how to pass the values Date1 and Date2 to user-exit so that i can calculate the difference of days using a function module.
I know how to use a user-exit but not sure about working on 2 fields at a time for a formula variable????

    1) For the first problem, I think you should play with the replacement path settings (type, offset,...).  I did this before and I'm sure it worked.
    2) If the variables are entered in the variable screen there is no problem to use a function module (it works with steps --> look at the how-to), but I think you want to calculate not on variables but on the keyfigure values itself, in this case you will have to use virtual characteristics.  There is also a how-to about this, I can't help you with the details my self.

JDBCTxDataSource gives you participation in JTS transactions on top of JDBCDataSource

So if you want the connections to participate in your EJB transactions, you must

  • Difference between "Data replication", "Data Cloning", "Data duplication" and "Data Migration"

    Hi Gurus,
Can anyone tell me the difference between "Data replication", "Data Cloning", "Data duplication" and "Data Migration". I have gone through Google but doesn't find any appropriate answer for that where I can find the difference.
It would be highly appreciated if you give me a link for all and give me some point out.
    Thanks & Regards
    Nimai Karmakar

Here is how I see the terms used and understood by most folks
    "Data replication"
This is the keeping the same data in sync in 2 different databases.  Replication is the process of keeping data in sync between 2 environments/databases and not limited to Oracle to Oracle, it could be Oracle to MySQL to be kept in sync, MySQL to Oracle, Oracle to SQL Server, SQL Server to Oracle.  The purpose of keeping data in sync can vary, but that is basic description of what it is.
    "Data Cloning"
Make a copy of the data/database from one database environment to another, like for example taking production database and cloning the database to a pre-production database/environment for testing.  Coning term is used more when copying a database not just data, but the whole database so typically you hear the reference "Database Cloning", but data cloning is basically the making a copy of the data from one place to another.  Sometimes Cloning and Duplicating are used in the same way by folks as the basic end result is the same you are making a copy of the data to someplace else.
    "Data duplication"
This is typically term when duplicating the data from one environment to another for a particular purpose, a lot of folks use "Data/Database Cloning" and "Data Duplication" in the same context, meaning they use them to mean the same thing, but I see more difference in the terms so when they are different Data Duplication is done when combining 2 databases to 1 therefore you can not clone the 2 databases into one so this term would be used more in those circumstances.
    "Data Migration"
Moving data from one location/database to another location database, for example moving from MySQL to Oracle you would do a data migration from MySQL to Oracle as you are moving the data from MySQL to Oracle and going to leave it in Oracle.  You could also be migrating to from Oracle 10g environment to a new Oracle 11g environment, therefore "Migration" is typically used when referring to moving the data from one environment to another and the source and target are different in location, database vendor, database version.
These are very simple ways of looking at the terms from my experience on how they are used.

  • Difference between Data staging and Dimension Table ?

Difference between Data staging  and Dimension Table ?

    Data Staging:
Data extraction and transformation is done here.
Meaning that, if we have source data in flat file, we extract it and load into staging tables, we take care of nulls, we change datetime format etc.. and after such cleansing/transformation at then end, load it to Dim/Fact tables
Pros: Makes process simpler and easy and also we can keep track of data as we have data in staging
Cons: Staging tables need space hence need memory space
    Dimension Table:
tables which describes/stores the attribute about specific objects
Below is star schema which has dimension storing information related to Product, Customer etc..

    Hi Rajasekhar,
If date is characteristics, query can be analysed based on date and filters can also be set using this date.
If it is key figure query cannot be analysed based on date,
Based on requirements,we have to decide whether it should be chatracteristic or key figure

  • What is the difference between subroutine and function module?

What is the difference between subroutine and function module?

    Hi,
    they can both return values.
FMs are mainly used when a routine is to be performed by many programs.
Subroutines (forms) are generally only executed within one program.
You can perform routines from other programs, but it's not often done.
both forms and FMs are reusable modularization units.
To distinguish we generally say that forms are used for internal modularization and
FMs are used for external modularization.
To decide on which to implement, consider whether you need the content to be used just for a limited program
or wheteher it can be called from many independent programs.
For the first purpose it is better to implement a form whereas for the second we implement an FM.
However, ABAP does not isolate the usage context.
That is; you can call a form from another program within whose code the form is not actually implemented.
However, this requires attention since the form may utilize global variables.
The same issue holds for FMs.
FMs are encapsulated in function groups and function groups may have global variables that can be globally
used by all FMs inside it.

  • What is the difference between the normal function module and bapi function

    hi,
what is the difference between the normal function module and bapi function module.

    Hi
BAPI stands for Business API(Application Program Interface).
A BAPI is remotely enabled function module ie it can be invoked from remote programs like standalone JAVA programs, web interface etc..
You can make your function module remotely enabled in attributes of Function module but
A BAPI are standard SAP function modules provided by SAP for remote access. Also they are part of Businees Objest Repository(BOR).
BAPI are RFC enabled function modules. the difference between RFc and BAPI are business objects. You create business objects and those are then registered in your BOR (Business Object Repository) which can be accessed outside the SAP system by using some other applications (Non-SAP) such as VB or JAVA. in this case u only specify the business object and its method from external system in BAPI there is no direct system call. while RFC are direct system call Some BAPIs provide basic functions and can be used for most SAP business object types. These BAPIs should be implemented the same for all business object types. Standardized BAPIs are easier to use and prevent users having to deal with a number of different BAPIs. Whenever possible, a standardized BAPI must be used in preference to an individual BAPI.

    NUMBER (DEC) and INTEGER (INT4).
    Please suggest.
    Thanks & Regards,

    Hi Pavan,
The basic difference between Number(DEC) and INT4 is its internal storage in system.
For Number (DEC) - Value internally stored as packed number with 3 decimal places whereas INT 4 as 4 byte integer without decimal places.
For counter KF, you can go for INT 4.
    Hope this helps.
