Openbox and Gnome

I'm currently running Gnome as my DE.  I've noticed that many people run Openbox with Gnome.  What are the advantages or disadvantages of running Openbox with Gnome instead of just Gnome.
Regards

Openbox is just a different window Manager. Gnome has its own called Metacity that it uses. You can use one of many WMs with Gnome, apart from Openbox, Fluxbox, IceWM, JWM or any other that you can think of.
Please search the wiki for Window Managers to get more insight into the differences between WMs and Desktop Environments.

  • I need to install openbox from Gnome

    Hi guys. Now I have KDE and Gnome in my arch but both of them are too heavy. I want to setup openbox without to remove Gnome or KDE, my appz and my settings/files. I can install openbox via pacman and just to logout and login in openbox?
    thank you

    use some logic, read some docs. and try it, of course.

  • Openbox and NetworkManager issue

    I've just installed a fresh copy of arch, and then also openbox + pypanel. because I have problem with setting up my wireless connection through  wpa_supplicant I have decided to replace it with a network manager applet (like the one in ubuntu). I've visited this site and did as following:
    1. added in ~/.xinitrc
    pypanel&
    exec openbox
    (I'm using startx)
    2. installed
    pacman -S hicolor-icon-theme gnome-icon-theme
    (because I use WM as stand-alone)
    3. as next
    pacman -S cnetworkmanager
    4. then edited rc.conf
    DAEMONS=( ... !network hal networkmanager..).
    I've tried to run the command  /etc/rc.d/networkmanager start as a root and a normal user - but both gave me [FAILD].
    I'm trying to build very minimalistic system and making almost everything manual but I would like to have the applet manager starting with my pypanel or tint2 automatically (problems with wpa_supplicant and hidden SSID). I would like to achieve such a thing
    EDIT: I would like also to get the speaker-icon on my panel.

    Oh, I'm sorry. I see what is happening here. You installed cnetworkmanager, which is a command-line only version of networkmanager. Uninstall that and then install network-manager-applet.
    pacman -Rsn cnetworkmanager
    pacman -S network-manager-applet
    Then, in ~/.xinitrc do this:
    pypanel&
    nm-applet&
    exec openbox
    As for the volume, you should install volwheel from the AUR and also add that to your .xinitrc.
    A few suggestions:
    Instead of using .xinitrc, openbox has its own autostart file in ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh. Edit that file to have pypanel&, nm-applet&, etc. Then do:
    chmod +x ~/.config/openbox/autostart.sh
    Then change your ~.xinitrc to this:
    exec ck-launch-session openbox-session
    The ck-launch-session will allow you to shutdown, reboot, etc from inside openbox and the openbox-session command makes openbox run the autostart.sh script.
    I'll also suggest using Nitrogen or feh to set your wallpaper. They are in the wiki.

  • NX and gnome-settings-daemon

    Hi all,
    I'm new here and I'm using Arch for a few months now. I came (in fact I never left it) from Gentoo, so I found the Arch procedures somewhat familiar. I'm using the x86_x64 flavor as my desktop box, which is an Athlon 64 3200+.
    I recently noticed while accessing my box through NX that suddenly had broken the gnome themes and stuff like that. Just by running from a shell "gnome-settings-daemon" I saw the following error:
    The error was 'XI_BadClass (invalid Class parameter)'.
    (Details: serial 158 error_code 133 request_code 131 minor_code 6)
    (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
    that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
    To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
    option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
    backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
    So I ran gnome-settings-daemon with the --sync parameter:
    ** (gnome-settings-daemon:9066): WARNING **: Unable to start xrandr manager: unhandled X error while getting the range of screen sizes
    [pega@rei ~]$ The program 'gnome-settings-daemon' received an X Window System error.
    This probably reflects a bug in the program.
    The error was 'XI_BadClass (invalid Class parameter)'.
    (Details: serial 221 error_code 133 request_code 131 minor_code 6)
    (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
    that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
    To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
    option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
    backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
    A quick googling about XI_BadClass led me to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunt … bug/409621. Browsing a bit I found this: http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/opensu … 86_64.html.
    The point is that I just want to try the latest version (or at least that version) of libxklavier. The problem is that i don't want to go the ./configure && make && make install way, for my system's cleanliness sake. I looked for libxklavier in ABS but i found the 3.9 version.
    Can you give me a hint?
    Thanks in advance,
    Paul.

    Thanks AndyRTR, I managed to install the 4.0 version modifying the PKGBUILD from ABS. After a reboot (I'd got to be sure) I accessed again my box from NX and gnome-settings-daemon seemed to work fine at least in aspect (it loaded the gnome themes) but it spitted out this:
    ** (gnome-settings-daemon:5100): WARNING **: Unable to start xrandr manager: unhandled X error while getting the range of screen sizes
    ** (gnome-settings-daemon:5100): WARNING **: libxklavier.so.12: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    ** (gnome-settings-daemon:5100): WARNING **: Cannot load plugin 'Keyboard' since file '/usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-2.0/libkeyboard.so' cannot be read.
    ** (gnome-settings-daemon:5100): WARNING **: Error activating plugin 'Keyboard'
    So I just wanted to be sure that my layout were working (I'm using OpenBox without the startup script):
    [pega@rei ~]$ setxkbmap us intl
    [pega@rei ~]$ á
    As you can see the layout is working fine. So, what's happening here?
    Thanks!
    Update:
    I thought I could sing victory but I left my box alone a bit and when gnome-screensaver activated itself, just went crazy. At any mouse movement or typing any single key, the screen blinked alternating black with the default (green) gnome wallpaper. To recover my computer's control I had to kill gnome-screensaver from a tty; also, I noticed that the layout was broken too (it was reset to default 'us').
    So I'm rollbacking right now until knowing more about how to workaround this.

  • [SOLVED] After upgrade gdm and Gnome don't work.

    Hi,
    after I did an upgrade I had some ldconfig: errors and fixed them all using pkgfile and reinstallation of quite some packages.
    But now starting gdm with
    # systemctl start gdm
    only leads to a black screen with a cross shaped cursor I can move. Nothing more.
    Xorg works -- I'm writing this post from KDE.
    I reinstalled gnome and gnome-extra. Still no success.
    System is up to date.
    Hopefully my logs will help, I have no idea what to do. Thanks for any help. :)

    Finally managed fixed it.
    libcanberra-pulse from [extra] was broken. I reinstalled it with --force.
    Likely that came with the recent pulseaudio upgrade.

  • No TV sound - Problem with Pulseaudio and Gnome

    Hi Community!
    Since January 2013 I got big problems with the sound of my tvcard. The card is a Sundtek Media TV Pro. But after all the problems have nothing to to with the card itself!
    So far I found out, that the problem is with Pulseaudio.
    - Sound works under Windows on same PC.
    - Sound don't work under Arch - not with tvtime, not with vlc, etc.

    After setting up a new Arch installation with just xorg-server, gnome, tvtime and the sundtek driver from AUR I run journalctl -b:
    Feb 10 16:25:15 hightower pulseaudio[636]: [pulseaudio] pid.c:
    Daemon already running.
    With sudo journalctl | grep 'Feb 10 16:2' I get the following output:

    So, if I understand right, pulseaudio is alreade started by the rtkit-daemon and gnome couldn't start it again.
    At https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/30926 I found a hint concerning /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio.desktop and /etc/xdg/autostart/pulseaudio-kde.desktop.
    After removing them from /etc/xdg/autostart and running journalctl -b there are no more errors.
    With sudo journalctl | grep 'pulseaudio' I get:
    sudo journalctl | grep 'Feb 10 17:4' | grep 'pulse*'

    In my opinion all looks ok! I also checked the channels with the alsamixer and it looks good, too.
    So I ran vlc v4l2://:dev=/dev/video0:width=720:height=576:tuner-frequency=510750:adev=/dev/null:standard=255 - but still no sound.
    With cat /var/log/mediasrv.log I checked the drivers logfile:

    I started tvtime again. This time I ran rm -rf ~/.config/pulse/ and killall pulseaudio to kill the Pulseaudio server. I instantly got a loud noise out of my speakers.
    I closed tvtime and re-opened it. And there it was: TV SOUND OUT OF MY SPEAKERS!
    But now, when I run pavucontrol I get:
    Connection to PulseAudio failed. Automatic retry in 5s.
    In this cas this is likely because PULSE_SERVER in the Environment/X11 root Windows Properties or default-server in client.conf is misconfigured.
    This situation can also arrise when PulseAudio crashed and left stale details in the X11 Root Windows.
    If this is the case, then PuseAudio should autospawn again, or if this is not configured you sould run start-pulseaudio-x11 manually.
    I got the information from Sundtek, that Pulseaudio should not be started as system service. Instead, every user should have an own Pulseaudio daemon and that PA was concepted this way. But they don't know how it is implemented in ArchLinux.
    I also don't know it exactly. So the question to all you ArchLinu pro's:
    How is PA implemented in Arch? And how can I sustainable solve my problem?
    Thank you for your time and help!
    Durag

    There is just one more thing I found out.
    After logging into Gnome and running ps aux | grep pulse I get:

    To get the sound to work I run:
    rm -rf .config/pulse/
    killall pulseaudio
    killall -9 pulseaudio
    I again run ps aux | grep pulse
    rebel 4016 4.2 0.2 510124 11528 ? Sl 03:06 0:02 /usr/bin/pulseaudio --start --log-target=syslog

    rebel 4046 0.0 0.0 19456 1216 pts/0 R+ 03:07 0:00 grep pulse
    I can recognize that the STATs have changed. Maybe this can help to solve the problem?

  • Compton, Openbox and Catalyst 14

    Hi.
    I'm new with Arch Linux, Openbox and Compton, so...
    I install compton and after that ATI driver... when I do that...the screen freeze and I can't see what I type/click, but if I kill the process (CTRL+ATL+F2, ps aux, kill -9...), everything is back again.
    I use the Vi0L0's catalyst, and the compton.conf you can see below.
    How can I fix that, for enable transparency, shadow and of course: Steam.
    # Backend
    # Backend to use: "xrender" or "glx".
    # GLX backend is typically much faster but depends on a sane driver.
    backend = "glx";
    # GLX backend
    glx-no-stencil = true;
    # GLX backend: Copy unmodified regions from front buffer instead of redrawing them all.
    # My tests with nvidia-drivers show a 10% decrease in performance when the whole screen is modified,
    # but a 20% increase when only 1/4 is.
    # My tests on nouveau show terrible slowdown.
    # Useful with --glx-swap-method, as well.
    glx-copy-from-front = false;
    # GLX backend: Use MESA_copy_sub_buffer to do partial screen update.
    # My tests on nouveau shows a 200% performance boost when only 1/4 of the screen is updated.
    # May break VSync and is not available on some drivers.
    # Overrides --glx-copy-from-front.
    # glx-use-copysubbuffermesa = true;
    # GLX backend: Avoid rebinding pixmap on window damage.
    # Probably could improve performance on rapid window content changes, but is known to break things on some drivers (LLVMpipe).
    # Recommended if it works.

    # GLX backend: GLX buffer swap method we assume.
    # Could be undefined (0), copy (1), exchange (2), 3-6, or buffer-age (-1).
    # undefined is the slowest and the safest, and the default value.
    # copy is fastest, but may fail on some drivers,
    # 2-6 are gradually slower but safer (6 is still faster than 0).
    # Usually, double buffer means 2, triple buffer means 3.
    # buffer-age means auto-detect using GLX_EXT_buffer_age, supported by some drivers.

    emeres wrote:Just wanted to make sure. It is also the regular one, not catalyst legacy, right?
    I install that (from the arch wiki):
    Once you have added some Catalyst repository, update pacman's database and install these packages (see #Tools for more information):
    - catalyst-hook
    - catalyst-utils
    - catalyst-libgl
    - opencl-catalyst - optional, needed for OpenCL support
    - lib32-catalyst-utils - optional, needed for 32-bit OpenGL support on 64-bit systems
    - lib32-catalyst-libgl - optional, needed for 32-bit OpenGL support on 64-bit systems
    - lib32-opencl-catalyst - optional, needed for 32-bit OpenCL support on 64-bit systems
    So... after that I get:
    - Videos in browser (firefox/chrome/chromium) freeze in fullscreen
    - Resize windows is slowly
    - Teamviewer stop working
    - Record screen stop working
    - Sometimes I can't see what I'm typing... but after kill compton, everything appears
    I try using default compton.conf and "no" compton.conf... same problem.
    Sorry for my english

  • Xfce4 and gnome-network-manager [solved]

    I just made a clean install of archlinux. installed xorg and Xfce4, xfce-goodies, gnome-panel, gnome-desktop and gnome-network-manager. also I enabled GNOME services in startup and sessions. how do I start that network manager now? is nowhere in the settings, nor there is icon to add to the taskbar (i got xfapplets installed too)

    quoted from a previous thread
    I solved it by uncommenting my <locale><charset> in /etc/locale.gen.
    First you have to enable the locales you want being supported by your system. To enable or disable them, the file /etc/locale.gen is used. It contains every locale you can enable, and you have just to uncomment lines you want to do so.
    As we want to setup an english UTF-8 conform system, we want to enable en_US.UTF-8. But for compatibility to programs that don't support UTF-8 yet, it's recommended to support any other locale, prefixed with en_US as well. Having this in mind, we enable this set of locales:
    en_US.UTF8 UTF-8
    en_US ISO-8859-1
    After you've enabled the necessary locales, you have to run locale-gen as root to update them:
    # sudo locale-gen
    Generating locales...
    en_US.UTF-8... done
    en_US.ISO-8859-1... done
    Generation complete.

  • I3 and gnome-session

    trying to use i3 with gdm and gnome-session, following the same steps as using xmonad and awesome. gnome-session crashes about 30 seconds after it starts. i3 is running properly before that.

    i feel like gnome-session shouldn't crash if it's only throwing a warning. there's not much info here. as far as i know, i3 logs to ~/.xsession-errors anyway.

    I switched nvidia card for ati and its solved my problem so far.

  • Can't install Openbox and Fluxbox???

    I just installed Arch on a test machine. I'm using Openbox as my WM.
    I was planning on testing fluxbox-devel, but pacman says:
    :: fluxbox conflicts with openbox. Remove openbox? [Y/n]
    I do not want to uninstall openbox. Why is this??
    I'd like to use openbox as my main WM and just test fluxbox.
    Why isn't this possible?
    Debian had no trouble having both installed...

    I use openbox exclusively and have not used Flux for a very long time, but I think the problem here is a PKGBUILD that has a conflict that no longer is valid.  Since Openbox3 was completely rewritten with no flux code, there should be no more conflicts (previously, openbox and flux would use the same files, etc.).
    I would suggest either altering the PKGBUILD yourself and recompiling it, or (what I would do) send a message to the package maintainer to see if the fluxbox conflict can be removed, if it is not needed (which I don't think it does).

  • I have Kdemod and Gnome but when i am in Gnome i want Nautilus

    I have installed kdemod and gnome but when i am in gnome when i go to "Places", all folder are opened with dolphin. But i want to use dolphin when i am in kde4. Is there a way to resolve it?

    Yeah I've noticed this aswell, it's not just dolhpin. If you have anyother file manager installed gnome uses that instead. Can't help though sorry.

  • KDE and GNOME install no found smbclient from all mirrors?

    I met this issue when try to install KDE and GNOME. It is not found even in Arch's ftp and many mirrors.
    Who can help me this?
    Thanks in advance,

    do pacman -Sy before. smbclient was updated yesterday and maybe you forgot to sync the database.

  • GDM and GNOME has died...

    Hello! I'm currently posting via a Knoppix Live CD. This is because, after doing a system update yesterday, GDM and GNOME no longer work.
    I mostly received kdemod-4.1 updates.
    GDM crashes constantly now and if I just get to a prompt and run
    exec gnome-session
    An error message is displayed (can't make out what it is, it goes to fast) and then I'm logged out.
    How can I resolve? I currently can't log into ANY desktop environment at all.

  • [SOLVED] Openbox and tint2 - adding another panel/ taskbar...

    Hi, so I'm fairly new and usually don't have any questions to ask because I can always find someone who's asked them before
    However, this time, I don't know if I'm not searching the correct way or something, but I just can't find it - and it's a pretty simple thing.
    I have Openbox and my panel is tint2. All very nice, but I was wondering if I can add another panel (that is - I want two tint2 panels). I'm almost sure that's possible due to the way the theming config is organized but I can't find how :s
    So if someone knows or can direct me to the right thread, I'd appreciate it. Thanks

    You need two different config files.  See this thread for hints:

  • Openbox and Compton

    Over the past few days I have been working on a custom desktop built around Openbox and Compton. I have come up with two somewhat interrelated questions regarding my setup.
    What is the class_g or name of the window that shows up when you change workspaces in Openbox? (I have tried using xprop to identify it, but it returns nothing.)
    I have three applications (Conky, tint2, and urxvt) that I want to have a blurred background. Using compton.conf, how do I exclude all other windows from having a blurred background?
    # Configuration file for the desktop compositor.
    ### Get Compton working with ati drivers ###
    # Set the backend that Compton should use to render things on the desktop.
    backend = "glx";
    # Paint on the composite overlay window instead of painting on the root window.
    paint-on-overlay = true;
    # Avoid using the stencil buffer. Improves performance by around 15%.
    glx-no-stencil = true;
    # GLX buffer swap method. Can be:
    # [0]: undefined
    # [1]: copy
    # [2]: exchange
    # [3-6]
    # [-1]: buffer-age
    # 1 is the fastest. Use it if it works.
    glx-swap-method = 1;

    Ad. 1. I think you would have to take a look at the source code to find that out.
    Ad. 2. I speculate here*, try something like this:
    blur-background-exclude = [ "window_type = '*'", "window_type = '*', "window_type = '*', "window_type = '*'];
    blur-background = [ "window_type = 'menu'", "window_type = 'utility'", "window_type = 'splash'", "window_type = 'dialog'", "class_g = 'Conky'",
    "class_g = 'tint2'", "class_g = 'urxvt'" ];
    Edit: *I had no errors running something similar, but did not test thoroughly.
