Opening a "Stuffit Expander" files?

Hello All
I need to open a file that has a "eps.sit" extension. I just downloaded the "Suffit Expander" on my Mac (CS3). So I have it installed, But photoshop and Illustrator wont open it up. It says it does not recognize it. The file I'm trying to open is a business card template file for Photoshop and Illustrator.
Can someone help me. What am I doing wrong?

  • Open .bin files wihtout Stuffit Expander?

    Hi,
I need to install the Windows Media Player 9 because of some streaming movies that currently have troubles with the latest Flip4Mac. So I downloaded WMP9 from the Microsoft site, which is a .bin file.
Unfortunately I am unable to open this .bin file. I know there is an application called Stuffit Expander. But before I can download this application I have to fill in my e-mail address to get an e-mail with the download link. This is definitely not something I enjoy doing. It seems pretty weird to me that even Apple is suggestion software from this vendor.
    Is there any alternative?

    Hi, prupert.
You wrote: "So why are they not just offering the download with a link on their website, as most software vendors do?"You'll have to ask Smith Micro, as they now own Allume (nee Aladdin), the developers of StuffIt.
You can easily opt-out of their marketing e-mails with the first one you receive per the instructions below the Submit button on the page page in question.
The file you downloaded — which I suspect is
    WindowsMediaInstaller.bin
from this page — is not a proper MacBinary (.bin) file. It is actually a StuffIt X archive and can only be opened in StuffIt Expander. This can be seen by opening the file in either TextEdit or a hexadecimal editor, like HexEdit, where you will see the following at the start of the file:
    Windows Media.sitx
If it were a true MacBinary file, then if you downloaded it with Safari, it would be expanded without need for StuffIt. However, if I download it in Safari, the download is assigned the .sitx extension, not bin.
So, you need StuffIt Expander to decompress the download.
    Good luck!

  • StuffIt Expander thinks it is a Classic app

When I try to open the StuffIt Expander that installed with my OS X or try to open a compressed file that sends a request to open Expander, I get the message "Sorry, Expander will not work without the StuffIt Engine. Please reinstall from the original installer." No, I didn't get confused and switch out my classic Expander for the one installed by the OS X CD. This has happened every time I erase the OS X partition and reinstall and my solution had always been to download a new version from the web site which works. Now there is no download of any older versions after Alladin sold out. I can boot to OS 9 and use the old OS 9 version of Expander but that seems like a huge waste of time. Any suggestions as to either a 10.2.8 alternative file expander or a way to fix my Expander? If you want to tell me to buy 10.3 or later, don't waste your time. I will hold out a few more months for a new computer instead so let's just concentrate on fixing Expander if at all possible.

Thanks for your effort but I think it is for naught. I had already gone through the many links in VersionTracker and, in fact, this one that calls itself "StuffIt Expander 8.0.2, is not for 8.0.2 but is for 11.0.2 that won't work with my 10.2.8 system. There is also an Editor's Note on that page: "StuffIt Expander is only available as part of StuffIt Standard and is not available for separate download." It looks like I must buy something, either StuffIt Standard, StuffIt Delux or OS 10.3

  • Help! Can't open .dmg files suddenly, and can't find stuffit expander application!

My iMac is currently running on Mac os x 10.5.8, **out of nowhere my computer can't open dmg files. I can't seem to find the stuffit expander application anywhere in my hard drive either, which usually opens these files. Is there another application that can open dmg files? Help Please! I need to open multiple dmg files tonight and can't figure out a way around this. Downloading/running a new stuffit expander application also happens to be a .dmg file. If anyone can help me I'd appreciate it so much!

Do you mean DiskImageMounter was chosen or not?
No change on that .dmg or on on others?
If you want to apply DiskImageMounter to all you have to choose "Change All".
EDIT: Also, Repair Permissions from /Applications/Utilities/ Disk Utility.
Also, George Orville has some interesting advice in this thread
Note this advice is for 10.3 but much of it will apply here.

  • How do I keep Stuffit Expander away from gzipped files?

I'm not sure this is the ideal place for this post, but I'll try:
Is there a way to disassociate Stuffit Expander and .gz files? I thought maybe I could use get info in the Finder and change the "Open with:" setting to "Not applicable", but I don't see that option. Is there some other way to do this from the command line? I even tried removing that file helper entry from Internet Explorer prefs. This is on 10.3.9, but I've also tried on 10.4.11.
    Thanks for any tips.
    Cole

Right click the .sit or .gz or whatever archive and select "Open With - Other"
    A Finder-like window will appear.
On the left, click Macintosh HD and then System
On the dropdown box Enable: Select All Applications
    In the search box enter
    Archive Utility
Select Archive Utility which should show up in the result window, and then check the box
    Always Open With
    Worked for me.

  • Stuffit expanding OS X zip files to exe?

why is stuffit expanding zip files of macintosh software to windows .exe that quicktime tries to open and does not recognise?
    any fixes?
    thanks

Are these files you are downloading? If so, I would guess you are not downloading the Mac versions of the files. Stuffit just expands files it doesn't create them so if they are .exe files that it is unzipping then check the version of the file. Almost all Mac files are either .sit or .dmg files. Very very few mac files are zipped and none are .exe files

  • Auto extract downloaded files like stuffit expander

Is it possible to do this?
To setup a folder to be watched so that whenever you download any new rar, zip files or other archive formats into that folder it'll automatically extract them (like mac's stuffit expander).

IgnorantGuru wrote:Personally, I prefer just associating xtract with archive types, so when I open them in my file manager they are instantly extracted to a subfolder - no interaction.  You might find that just as easy.
Thank you! I've been trying to get incron and fsniper to execute my script but they wouldn't listen I'm a bit of a newbie so i think that will do
I've never used those, only inotifywait, which is very reliable.  But inotifywait doesn't start anything for you, it just watches until the target changes, then quits.  So you use it in a script.  The example script I gave above needs to be saved as "myscript" for example, then started manually with:
    bash myscript &
That will keep it running.  Or you can have it start automatically each time you login, which will vary depending on what kind of setup you have (desktop, etc).  That's if you do decide you want the stuffit type folder.

  • TS2647 My keynote files keeps saving my document as a package even though "Save new documents as packages" is not selected. I also do not have Stuffit Expander on my system. Any ideas why this is happening?

My Keynote file is NOT creating a single file but creating a folder with all the decks files.
    1. I have "Save new documents as packages" deselected in Keynote preferences. And…
    2. I do not have StuffIt Expander on my system.
    Any suggestions.

OK, restart in Safe Mode, this will clear some caches. It's possible one or more is corrupt. To restart in Safe Mode when you hear the start up tone hold down the Shift Key until you see a progress bar. Let it fully boot then restart normally and test.
Also I am assuming you have checked Finder - Preferences  - General and see what boxes are checked in "Show these items on desktop." You can also mount an item in Disk Utility, simply highlight it and then look in the File menu for Mount.....

  • Downloads open as Text Edit files

Hi, I bought my first Mac a couple of weeks ago (never been able to afford one before!) and it's proving to be as amazing as I expected, but I'm still trying to work lots of things out.
When I try to download files from the internet or from email attachments they go to my downloads folder but when I open them they come up as what looks like a computer code in a Text Edit window.
At first I thought this was because I was trying to open Windows only file types but I just tried to download a game that was supposed to be for Mac only and it happened here as well. (This is the website I was trying to download from: http://absolutist.com/mac/bubble_shooter/ )
I appreciate I'm probably being a moron but I've trawled the forums here and can't seem to find an answer - any help would be very welcome.
    Thanks

    To The Apple Discussion Boards!
After you click on the download link a window will pop up showing you what type of file it is you are trying to download. In this case, it's a .sit file.
In the center of the window you will see:
_*Open With.*_ Make sure this is selected.
Now check to see what application/program is selected to open your files. It appears to be some text edit program. You will need to select an application that you want to open your .sit files or all your files for that matter.
I personally, use the free Stuffit Expander to open all my files instead of depending on the OS to open them.
You can download Stuffit Expander from VersionTracker.

  • Cannot open any au.dmg file. "There is no default app. to open the doc."

I cannot open these free audio plugins. What application should I use to open these AU.dmg files?
    ex: http://bram.smartelectronix.com/plugins.php?id=1

Are you referring to this specific file?
    http://www.smartelectronix.com/refer.php?url=~bram/adrian/SupaPhaser_au.dmg.gz
The rest are all .sit files which are Stuffit compressed and require Stuffit Expander or The Unarchiver or something similar to open.
.gz is gzip compression and should already be on your computer. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gzip
This will decompress to a .dmg file which is a standard OSX image file and should open with DiskImageMoutner in /System/Library/CoreServices
.au is an audio format which is somewhat archaic now I believe. I haven't encountered a file in that format in many years. Presumably the software package you are using will open it. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aufileformat]
While Pacifist will open .dmg you should already have DiskImageMounter on your computer as part of the basic package. I start to get worried when something like that is missing because who knows what else may be missing and why? Perhaps early stages of directory problems?

  • Can't open up downloaded *sit* files since Tiger upgrade

    Hello,
I am having trouble trying to open downloaded sit files since upgrading to Tiger. I saw a similiar problem while browsing the forums but it didn't solve my problem. I "got info" on the file and tried to open with the Installer in the utilities folder but it was not selectable. For some reason it defaults to my Photoshop 7.0 program. What happened to Aladdin Stuffit expander that was with the previous versions? How do I open these downloaded files since I don't have Stuffit expander?
    Thanks for any help!

Stuffit Expander isn't included with Tiger.
You have to download it yourself.

  • Opening a Unix Executable File

I am a Mac newbie, switching from PC. I do embroidery digitizing and downloaded several embroidery designs in "zipped" format. When I viewed them in the Get Info dialog, they were listed as Unix Executable Files. When I tried to open one, a dialog box came up saying that I needed to choose a file to open them with. What program or helper app do I choose?
    Respectfully,
    Patricia

Sometimes ZIP files are made into self-expanding .exe files. When run on a PC, they will unzip without needing any unzipping software. They will not do this on a Mac, but Stuffit Expander may work with them

  • Can't open .wmv or .mpeg files

Just switched from PC to Mac. I receive .wmv and .mpeg files, but can't view them because I'm getting a message that says I don't have an application to do so. How do I view these files?
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

You should be able to play mpegs in Quicktime. You can download Windows Media Player to view wmv files, or you can use Flip4Mac's plugin to view them in Quicktime.
Microsoft has discontinued development for Windows Media Player for Mac; future development will be through the Flip4Mac plugin, which they have licensed their technology to.
You will need Stuffit Expander to open the file you download from Microsoft for Windows Media Player. There is a link to it in the download instructions there.

  • Problems with Stuffit Expander!!!

Just got an iBook G4. After transferring some of my files from my PC a few of the videos were in Windows Media Player format. I downloaded the Media Player but it was compressed to a .sitx extension. I downloaded stuffit and installation was normal, however, when I try and open or use Stuffit Expander it opens, then closes immediately with the normal 'this application closed unexpectedly..." message. I've tried trashing, re-downloading and re-installing but nothing changes. I'm using Tiger v.10.4 with a 14.1" iBook G4. Can anyone help?

    Jack,
    welcome on the board,
First thing I would do, is to trash all preferences files related to Stuffit, (in your library), then boot from the OSX CD installer (hold down the C key during the boot to boot from the inserted CD ), of course don't install anything, but from the menu > launch Disk Utilities, and then make a repair disk and also a Permission Repair on you booting HD.
-Reboot, and check if if you have all OSX components updated, (for instance OSX..4.2 instead of OSX..4.1)
-Reboot, and make again a Permission Repair on your HD
-Check on the Allume web site, if you have the latest Stuffit Expander version.
-in case of new install, again make a Permission Repair
I also would check all points included in this Apple Document :
    My application quit unexpectedly
    Hope that helps
    Francis

  • I'm trying to download Stuffit Expander and it's not working

I've downloaded several programs, i.e. Yahoo Messenger and BuzMe(Mac versions), but I get blank icons. When I clicked on the icons, it said I have to choose and application to open them with. I went to download StuffIt Expander and when I click to download it, I get a page full of symbols(I downloaded the version for Mac 10.3 and higher). I don't know how I'm going to get this to work. What should I do?

    Hi,
Try right clicking/control clicking on the download link and selecting "Download Linked File". Alternatively, if StuffIt email you the location of the download file, paste that address into the (Safari?) address bar and press option+return to download it.
