Optional editable regions in head

I'm trying to create a master template that will enable me to
include or not include cross-fading photographs in pages based on
that template.
I know that with DW8 I can insert an editable region in the

(ie for description, keywords).
I know that with DW8 I can insert an optional region in the

to show/hide content.
But can I insert an optional editable region in the

?
I want to have the option of including a javascript file in a
')@@
Then in each child page, as long as you leave the parameter
alone, no script
tag is written to the head. But to get the script tag, you
would just use
MODIFY | Template Properties, select the optionJS parameter,
and browse to
and select the desired script file, and it'll be there....

• Optional Editable Regions

In a two column fixed, left sidebar, header and footer layout I've designated the sidebar as an "optional editable region." My intent is for the sidebar to have no content on some pages, and on those pages to have the main content region fill the entire page. However, when the sidebar is empty it still occupies 200px on the left of the page. Are there any suggestions on how to have the sidebar completely disappear when there is no content in it?
Thanks.

Hi Nancy,
Thanks for your reply.
I took a quick look at your code, but it will require some time to analyze.
In the meantime I'll try and answer your question and provide some
additional description.
I'm experimenting with a new file before touching my real code and so the
file is the standard vanilla layout from DW CS4 - two column fixed, left
sidebar, header and footer. The CSS is the default generated by DW. Here's
the layout:
I've designated the sidebar as an optional editable region. On some pages I
don't intend to place contents in this region and would like it "disappear"
and have the main content region occupy the entire page. On other pages I'd
like to insert content into the sidebar and have it appear. However, even
though I have no content in the sidebar it still appears to occupy the first
200px of the page and push the main content over.

• Can't manually add editable regions to head in template

When I created my main template in Dreamweaver CS6 for my website, I had copied most of the page code from another layout I already had, including the head code. I did not realize there were already editable regions built into the head section of the Dreamweaver template and deleted them when I pasted my previous code without adding new ones. I then added an editable region to the body and started created pages using the template.
Everything works well and updates properly when I make changes to the template but now that I am trying to add those editable regions back to the head section so I can change the page title (and possibly add more responsive code), it doesn't work. I copied and pasted the following code into my template file in Dreamweaver and it saves in the template telling me it's updating the related pages, but when I open those individual pages in Dreamweaver, the code isn't there and those regions are not editable; only the original editable region I created in the body exists and works properly. Everything else continues to work perfectly.
Here is the code I pasted into the head around the
tag:

Collings Document Database

And here is the code I pasted into the head just before the
tag:

Any help would be appreciated. From everything I've read on these forums after searching, it sounds like pasting that code should work but I continue to get the results mentioned. Thank you.

Thanks for the response. I've run the template code through the validator and the following two errors are the only ones that showed up. I don't see how either of these would cause this issue. Thoughts?

• Template editable regions in head

Murray - as you always seem to answer questions on Templates:
I'm troubleshooting a site for a friend who does not frequent
this
forum - they have a couple of editable regions in the

of the
file - used for some Javascript and also the page title.
Now I know that a properly formatted template has:
separate editable region named name="doctitle" - er for the
title and
a second editable region named name="head" for other things.
Does having

in the
matter - affect the functionality of Dw
??? - I know of
course that in wouldn't matter as far as the server is
concerned.
many thanks

Thanks Alan - I did think that would be the case - even if
not what I
would do.
No - not 12 editable regions - no idea how that happened - -
they only
have three - two in the head and 1 in the body.
I long ago moved to Dw - and details are hazy - but when I
did a
refresh of a site a couple of years ago - I created a brand
new single
template using File | New | Blank Template - so all
superfluous
nonsense I had generated in the migration from Frontpage was
eradicated - and unexplained program crashes became a thing
of the
past.

• Templates - editable region in head

I've got code that I would like to make a template, but it's
in the head tag. I cann't make any portion of this an editable
region. Also, any pages generated from the template don't allow me
to edit anything in the head area. So if I want to have only a few
items differ in the head area for several similar pages, does this
mean I cann't use templates? Is there another way to do this?
Maybe I could just use a bunch of server side includes and
abondon templates butr this would inciate to me a serious design
limit in templates.
Here is my code in the head area that I'm trying to use as a
template with an editable region. The margin-right, margin-left
would have unique values for each page. Also the line "a.slidea
{background:url(images/cats/sidney-small.jpg);}" would be unique
for each page.
Thanks
a.gallery, a.gallery:visited {
display:inline;
color:#000;
text-decoration:none;
border:1px solid #000;
width:75px;
height:75px;
float:left;
position:relative;
cursor:default;
margin-top: 21px;
margin-right: 60px;
margin-bottom: 21px;
margin-left: 60px;
a.slidea {background:url(images/cats/sidney-small.jpg);}
a.slideb {background:url(images/cats/sidney-small.jpg);}
a.slidec {background:url(images/cats/sidney-small.jpg);}
a.slided {background:url(images/cats/sidney-small.jpg);}
a.slidee {background:url(images/cats/sidney-small.jpg);}
a.slidef {background:url(images/cats/sidney-small.jpg);}
a.slideg {background:url(images/cats/sidney-small.jpg);}
a.slideh {background:url(images/cats/sidney-small.jpg);}
a.slidei {background:url(images/cats/sidney-small.jpg);}
a.slidej {background:url(images/cats/sidney-small.jpg);}

This is the sign of an improperly made template.
Do this -
Create a new page (Basic HTML).
Use FILE | Save as Template....
Look at the code in the head region of the page, particularly
the editable
region around the
tag, and the other editable
region in the head
called "head".
Make your template file look like that.
Always use FILE | Save as Template when you create your
templates and you
won't have this problem again.

• Editable region

Help! Is there a way to limit an editable region to a fixed size?
I have a pretty simple design sliced into four pieces: Header, horizontal navbar, main body, footer. I've made the mainbody into an editable region. But if I add more text that the exact size of the mainbody divtag, my page breaks apart wehre the mainbody and footer meet.
I have gone into CSS and typed in the height dimension in the div (#wrapper #mainBody #mainContent), but it didn't make a difference. When I added it to the paragraph div (#wrapper #mainBody #mainContent p), the type went crazy.
I've spent hours trying to work this out. I'm now considering just working around this -- ie, inserting content until I see the page breaks up. But there must be a simpler and safer method to do this.
Many thanks to anyone who can help. CSS and HTML coding is below:
@charset "UTF-8";
padding: 0px;
margin-top: 0px;

Nancy and Paul,
Many thanks for the quick reply.
To clarify, I am building a website that will feature a series of essays, so the content is very text heavy. There will be a photo and occasional graphic to break up the text on each page, but otherwise it's just words, words, words. Even with such a large display space (ie, the mainContent
, 800x990 px), these essays will run two to five pages long.
I have not yet gone live, so I cannot post a link. However, I've attached a jpg of the prototype:
As you can see, I've used a non-repeatable textured background. Hence my problem: The type that I fit into the mainContent cannot run longer than what the
allows, as the main content section will not expand. Rather, text runs off the maincontent section and the design breaks where the footer begins (page number at the bottom). I was fooling around with the height rule in a failed effort to create a bottom margin or padding that would stop the type from overflowing.
So, is there a way I can still work with this? Or as Nancy suggested, is my design too regid for the web?
Thank you again for your help. I am brand new to webdesign, and am rather befuddled at the moment....
PS to Gary: The mainContent
created a container that gave me my left, right and top padding for the text and photos. (The mainBody
margins ran into the black margins on both sides and up to the navBar at the top.) I had hoped the same
would set the bottom padding, too, but it didn't work.

• Not able to edit editable regions in contribute CS5

Hi there,
i got a question i need to ask according to the helpdesk i just spoke to. I've downloaded the Contribute CS5 trial yesterday and i wanted to show my costumer how to edit pages and create new ones. I've made the connection to the website and tried every possible thing but the only thing i can edit is the first editable region wich i always leave blank (the designer build in some hidden text there). The rest of the editable regions, named header and content can't be edited. How is this possible? This is only on the most existing pages. Creating new ones do not appear to have the same problems.
i work with contribute CS4 and everything works fine. I can edit pages fully and publish everything like it should be. To be sure i also downloaded the trial CS5 to my laptop and i got exactly the same problem as described above.
How can help me out?
cheers

• Error adding editable region in nested template Header

I have a base template for the website (establishing basic
menus), and a secondary template using that base template, which
establishes a common table layout for one part of the site. Having
created the PHP to drive the page, I need to lock down that
secondary nested region - otherwise any edit I make to my secondary
"table-defining" template is not passed through
to the final pages using the secondary template. I have
successfully created a secondary editable region in each part of
the <body> area, and sure enough, it locks down text
outside the secondary editable region just as DW help says it
should. So far so good.
Now the problem - I cannot create a region inside the
<head> editable region to lock down that region too.
Normally one would want keywords and so on to be variable from page
to page, but as I am filling variable keywords from a database, it
makes sense to lock down the <head> too. Does anyone
know why that generates an error "cannot create an
optional region here"? Is there anything that can be done
about it?

Posts are hard to read when they are all crammed together
like yours. Try
making some paragraphs!
Nevertheless, I think I understand what you are saying., but
honestly, I
just wouldn't do it that way. Anymore, my templates are just
one editable
region in the body, and a bunch of server-side includes. I
find nested
templates much too complex, and troublesome to work with, and
have really
never found a scenario where I could do things with them that
I could not do
more easily with other methods.
> However, I have an Editable
> region with the HTML Head area, and DW does not permit
me to add a

it down.
Is it only you working on the site? Who are you trying to
'lock down'? If
it's only you, I'd forget about this. Invariably the things
like this that
you think are a good idea come back later to bite you.

• How do I remove an extra editable region in the head of a specific page?

I have a single-template website. My template has the standard two editable regions in the head ("title" and "head"). Somehow, one of my pages ended up with three editable regions in the head - two named "head" as well as title. My template won't update this page because the editable regions don't match. How do I remove this extra editable region from the head of the page? I can't modify it on the page itself, of course, and I can't remove it by modifying the template because it's not part of the template.
Thanks in advance!

Your child page would not contain any editable regions if it wasn't attached to a Template. Perhaps you nested templates which is the wrong thing to do.
Go to Modify > Templates > Detach from Template.

• Editable Region - Head

I have been working with templates for quite some time now
but have really dove in or created ones that are too complex. I
have a situation now where I need to ad some layers to a specific
page created from a template. DW is not letting me giving me the
error:
quote:
"Making this change would require changing the code that is
locke d by a template or translator. The change will be discarded."
If I go back to the template itself I see code for the head
like this:
quote:

Untitled Document

What do I need to do so that the page generated from a
template will let me put in a layer on that page?
Thanks you,
Houston

Here's the problem with layers in template child pages, and a
simple
solution.
When you DRAG a layer onto the page in DW (this means you
click on the layer
icon in the Insert Toolbar and drag the layer on the page),
DW wants to put
the code for that layer immediately under the body tag, e.g.,
BEFORE DRAG -
<body...>

AFTER DRAG -
<body ...>
<div id="foo" style="position:absolute; ...>LAYER
STUFF

In a template child page, this region is usually not part of
your editable
region, and so the layer's code is rejected by the template
engine. This is
a bad thing.
If instead of dragging the layer onto the page, you use
INSERT | Layer, that
should work provided your cursor is in an editable region,
but since
editable regions are usually within tables or other layers,
you have just
broken one of the rules listed above. This is also a bad
thing.
THE SOLUTION -
Open your template page in DW, and create a special place
where it is SAFE
to put your layers. In code view, find this -

and click so that your cursor insertion point is just to the
left of

.
Now, use INSERT | Template Objects > Editable Region, and
name this region
"Layer Pad" or something like that.
When you save your template page, all your child pages will
now have the
LayerPad editable region on them.
THE BIG FINISH -
On any child page where you need a layer, just click in this
editable
region, and use INSERT | Layer. Bada bing, bada boom.

• How do I make head section an editable region?

I have a main template with header, spry menu, main content(editable region) and footer.
I create new page from template, but it will not let me edit the head section to add a spry accordian. I need to paste the external link to css for the accordian in the head section, but DW wont let me touch the head section. I tryed to make the "head" an editable region, but that did not work.
Thanks for any insight...
Kevin

If you are using a recent version of Dreamweaver, there should be an editable section in the head of the document just before the closing head tag. It looks like this:

Insert the keywords, description, links to external files between the Template comments.
If you're using an older version of Dreamweaver that hasn't created an editable region inside the head, copy and paste the template comments into the master template just before the closing head tag, as shown above.

• After inserting editable regions, DW CS3 tells me none exist...?

I am having muliple problems with templates on this particular project, that I have never seen before. I was going to break them into multiple
questions, per the instructions here at the forum, but all of these relate to the same template code, which I will post below, so I think it would be
more efficient to include the related questions in this thread.
Background
I created this template by first scraping the client's existing site, which is a dynamic CMS site, with HTTrack. Secondly, I opened the HTML file generated by that processs, and saved it as a template in my DW project, which automatically assigned it to the "Templates" folder, and is accessable via the "Assets" panel (usual stuff.)
The reason for starting with a scraped version of existing is that this project involves moving the site off of the CMS platform and into HTML/CMS, yet preserving essentially the same design.
1. The most obvious problem I have is that in the subject line: after adding a couple of editable regions to my template,
when I save/preview, an error message comes up saying "your template has no editable regions, do you want to proceed?"
2. In doing the save as template operation, I am prompted with "Update links?" and I do. When I open the template, all looks good in DW, however as soon as I do a preview, I get a completely raw html page with NO css styling, no images, no fonts, etc. Conversely, if I do the same step, yet choose not to update links when prompted, then I get a template that looks completely bare in DW (no styling, no images, etc.) yet looks fine when previewed...?
Additionally, one other thing I tried was doing the save as template, choosing not to update links, and then moving it out of the templates folder into the main project folder - Here, it both looks fine in DW, and previews, yet I am unable to use it as a template (does not appear in assets, cannot use "create new from" or "apply", etc.)
I have also tried changing from "site root" to "document" in terms of linking, yet nothing has worked. Every time I have created a template on other projects, all has just worked fine from the start, so I am really stumped here.
The project will have too many pages to not use a template for updates, so I am hopeful that I can figure out what is causing this. Following is my template code:

There are (or can be), of course, editable regions in the head of a document. Typically, around the

you will find 'space' to put links etc, and meta tags:

Your title here

Further down in this same document, I find:

showing a stylesheet link and an embedded style.
So it's not so much that you can't have editable areas in the head of the document, it's more that you can't overlap or improperly nest ANYTHING.
You can also (am I repeating myself?) make a tag's attributes editable. I use that feature most notably for applying different IDs to
tags for different neighborhoods in my sites. By applying different body IDs, I can control more specifically elements on those pages. But that's a conversation for another time!
Best,
Beth

• Modifying a template resulted in all child pages with repeating editable regions - Help !

Good morning,
I have recently been appointed to update a website designed in Dreamweaver by an employee who is no longer here. I have read books on the software and practiced an insane amount which permitted me to update child pages, links, documents etc... however:
I was asked to add a new button to an "non-editable" region of a template. Trying to do so resulted in a massive mess (with massive anxiety).
Even thou the new template had all the same text and editable regions, all my pages look completely different from the template itself. The editable regions appears 2-3 times in different locations ex: Header is showed on the bottom, top etc... and the Editable region titles (EditableRegion1 etc...) repeat themselves as well.
I really need help and not sure what to do, I have tried everything and I am only making it worse and worse. All I want/need is for all my html pages created with this template, match the template.
Please note that this site is local, not online.
Since I noticed on other threads that the code is needed; here it is:

/* Tips for Elastic layouts
1. Since the elastic layouts overall sizing is based on the user's default fonts size, they are more unpredictable. Used correctly, they are also more accessible for those that need larger fonts size since the line length remains proportionate.
2. Sizing of divs in this layout are based on the 100% font size in the body element. If you decrease the text size overall by using a font-size: 80% on the body element or the #container, remember that the entire layout will downsize proportionately. You may want to increase the widths of the various divs to compensate for this.
3. If font sizing is changed in differing amounts on each div instead of on the overall design (ie: #sidebar1 is given a 70% font size and #mainContent is given an 85% font size), this will proportionately change each of the divs overall size. You may want to adjust based on your final font sizing.
.twoColElsLtHdr #container {
width: 46em; /* this width will create a container that will fit in an 800px browser window if text is left at browser default font sizes */
background: #FFFFFF;
margin: 0 auto; /* the auto margins (in conjunction with a width) center the page */
border: 30px none #C4C4C4;
text-align: left; /* this overrides the text-align: center on the body element. */
padding-left: 10px;

border-top-color: #C4C4C4;
border-right-color: #C4C4C4;
border-bottom-color: #C4C4C4;

border-top-width: thick;

border-top-style: outset;
border-left-color: #C4C4C4;
border-right-width: thick;
border-bottom-width: thick;
border-left-width: thick;
.twoColElsLtHdr #header {
padding: 0 10px; /* this padding matches the left alignment of the elements in the divs that appear beneath it. If an image is used in the #header instead of text, you may want to remove the padding. */
background-color: #FFF;
.twoColElsLtHdr #header h1 {
margin: 0; /* zeroing the margin of the last element in the #header div will avoid margin collapse - an unexplainable space between divs. If the div has a border around it, this is not necessary as that also avoids the margin collapse */
padding: 10px 0; /* using padding instead of margin will allow you to keep the element away from the edges of the div */
/* Tips for sidebar1:
1. Be aware that if you set a font-size value on this div, the overall width of the div will be adjusted accordingly.
2. Since we are working in ems, it's best not to use padding on the sidebar itself. It will be added to the width for standards compliant browsers creating an unknown actual width.
3. Space between the side of the div and the elements within it can be created by placing a left and right margin on those elements as seen in the ".twoColElsLtHdr #sidebar1 p" rule.
.twoColElsLtHdr #sidebar1 {
float: left;
width: 12em; /* the background color will be displayed for the length of the content in the column, but no further */
padding: 15px 0; /* top and bottom padding create visual space within this div */
background-color: #066;
background-repeat: repeat-x;
border-top-width: thin;
border-top-style: none;
border-right-style: none;
border-bottom-style: none;
border-left-style: none;
border-right-width: thin;
border-bottom-width: thin;
border-left-width: thin;
color: #FFF;
padding-left: 0px;
clear: left;
.twoColElsLtHdr #sidebar1 h3, .twoColElsLtHdr #sidebar1 p {
margin-left: 10px; /* the left and right margin should be given to every element that will be placed in the side columns */
margin-right: 10px;
background-color: #066;
text-decoration: inherit;
/* Tips for mainContent:
1. If you give this #mainContent div a font-size value different than the #sidebar1 div, the margins of the #mainContent div will be based on its font-size and the width of the #sidebar1 div will be based on its font-size. You may wish to adjust the values of these divs.
2. The space between the mainContent and sidebar1 is created with the left margin on the mainContent div. No matter how much content the sidebar1 div contains, the column space will remain. You can remove this left margin if you want the #mainContent div's text to fill the #sidebar1 space when the content in #sidebar1 ends.
3. To avoid float drop, you may need to test to determine the approximate maximum image/element size since this layout is based on the user's font sizing combined with the values you set. However, if the user has their browser font size set lower than normal, less space will be available in the #mainContent div than you may see on testing.
4. In the Internet Explorer Conditional Comment below, the zoom property is used to give the mainContent "hasLayout." This avoids several IE-specific bugs that may occur.
.twoColElsLtHdr #mainContent {
margin: 0 1.5em 0 13em; /* the right margin can be given in ems or pixels. It creates the space down the right side of the page. */

I am not suprised, the previous employee tried to recreate the English version of the site in another folder structure and did not change all links and was still using a template in the wrong location.
I think I created the mess by trying to modify the existing template's non-editable region in order to add a new button. When trying to update all the pages, the fiasco started.
Do you think the best option would be to create a new template in the correct folder structure and apply it? Would it fix the current pages or will I have to fix them all manualy on by one?
I understand it is difficult to deal with a newbie of my magnitude and thanks again.

• Inputting a list into an alternative to inputting it into an editable region in a template

Hello all,
I did ask this question yesterday but only got partial feedback so I'm hoping someone can help as I can't find the answer anywhere.
I'm hoping you can help me.
I am creating an online clothing shop website and am having trouble.
I have created a main template from scratch that reflects in the mens and womens pages, and the contact, about etc pages with all headers, logos, footer, a spry menu etc. I made these pages from the main template via new - Page from template etc so any changes I made to the header, logo etc will easily reflect in all of these pages.
This part is all fine.
This is my issue - in the main template I have an editable region so that I can input different content ie. 'about' info on the 'about' page, and product info on the mens / womens pages etc.
Basically in each page Mens / Womens I need category pages - tops, shirts etc. These are all in the drop down spry menu but I also want them as a list in the mens and womens pages.
From the template I created the mens and womens pages and have now saved these as a template as there will be around 10 categories for each mens and womens (tops, shirts etc) that I want to be able to replect any changes, ie. in the 'mens template' instead of having to do it in each category page - as this will take a long time.
The problem is that I put the list in the editable region in the mens template, but I now know any changes I make wont be relfected in the category pages I have made from the mens template as this is an editable region.
How can I make a category list in the mens template page that will be reflected in each category page?
I'm really stuck and have no idea how to do this, I'd appreciate any help.
Thankyou in advance

I don't recommend using multiple or nested Templates. There are much better ways to do what you want without going down this very slippery slope.
Use Server-Side Includes alone or with your main Template.
Build a Dynamic Site with databases and server-side programming.

• Quick Question regarding an error with editable regions

Hello,
I am a co-op student and I work with other students as well, on our large company website. I have always been considered the cheif coder, and nobody knew the wesite layout and file directory as well as me. However, something terrible has happened while somebody was updating some information on one of your HTML pages.
I logged in to Dreamweaver CS3 on afternoon to make a very simple text error change on our website. As soon as I hit "synchronize sitewide", it stated that there was no synchronization necessary, although I had already made a change. So then, on the template (.DWT) page, I thought I would backspace any character, and then retype it again in order for the "save" option to appear, so that I could save the template, and have it update all HTML pages, as well as the page that had just said "no synchronization necessary". I thought that I had to update the template first, which was strange, as I never had to do this before.
When I clicked update, the error message that I got was that I have placed an editable region inside of a block tag. I checked the HTML pages as well as our template (.DWT) pages, and indeed, the "Page Header" was embedded in a

pair. The pair appears black and delete-able in the template files, and grey in the HTML files, which is expected. However, I have been working at this institution for four months, and I recall that the
tag pair had always been there since I remember. (How badly did this other person mess up?! =S)
I tried to delete it from the .DWT file (the small editable region, and the
tags), and now, what happens is that if I try to save a template so it updates all other HTML pages before synchronization, the template simply does not update anything, and I get no message whatsoever after clicking Save.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance for coping with these many details. I simply want to be able to update HTML pages again, because my boss really needs it, and I have never had such a problem before (having made much larger changes to this same website in the past)
Thanks again,
Mr. V

How many child pages are you supporting with this DWT? Hopefully less than 50 pages.
Is your code valid? HTML Validator - http://validator.w3.org
Can you post a link to your DWT page, or copy and paste your code here?
