ORA-01460 at REPLACE for strings longer than 4000 characters

the following code works fine for vVar_Value less than 4001 characters but raises an ORA-01460 for strings equal to or larger than 4001 characters in my environments.
declare
vVar_Value VARCHAR2(32000) := '';
begin
for i in 1..4000 loop
vVar_Value := vVar_Value||'X';
end loop;
dbms_output.Put_Line('length(vVar_Value): '||length(vVar_Value));
SELECT REPLACE( vVar_Value, 'NO_MIDDLE_NAME', '') INTO vVar_Value FROM DUAL;
exception
when others then
raise;
end;
any advice would be most apprectiated.
thanks in advance.

Why the heck are you using select from dual?
Just use vVar_Value := REPLACE( vVar_Value, 'NO_MIDDLE_NAME', ''); and everything will be OK
in SQL limit for varchar2 is 4K, only in PL/SQL you can use 32K

  • Parameter longer than 4000 characters

    The java layer calls a EXEC_DDL stored proc that does a EXECUTE IMMEDIATE on the VARCHAR2 parameter string passed in. SInce the java layer is passing more than 4000 characters DDL statement we get an error about cannot bind long ..... What datatype should I use as a parameter instead of VARCHAR2 inside the EXEC_DDL stored proc. Steven Feuerstein advises against using LONG in his PL/SQL book. All the LOB types are for objects either INSIDE or OUTSIDE of the database but I just want the java code to be able to pass a DDL string greater than 4000 chars. I want to use the simplest approach.
    Thanks in anticipation

    a SUBSTR or a DBMS_LOB.SUBSTR works. This is the final working version of the EXEC_DDL proc. We used the DBMS_LOB package in case we needed to overload with other types of LOB parameters.
    procedure exec_ddl (
    pi_ddl_string IN CLOB
    ,po_status OUT PLS_INTEGER
    AS
    PRAGMA AUTONOMOUS_TRANSACTION;
    -- AUTHID CURRENT_USER will be added after exception handling is packaged
    v_clob_buff VARCHAR2(500);
    BEGIN -- outer block
    EXECUTE IMMEDIATE pi_ddl_string;
    po_status := PKG_SNAPIT.pk_success;
    EXCEPTION
    WHEN OTHERS THEN
    v_clob_buff := DBMS_LOB.SUBSTR(pi_ddl_string,500,1);
    insert into exception_log values(sysdate,'COMPILE ERROR IN : ' || v_clob_buff,'pkg_dynamic_sql'
    ,'exec_ddl');
    COMMIT;
    pkg_snapit.Log_Errors ( 'Error_Stack...' || Chr(10) || DBMS_UTILITY.FORMAT_ERROR_STACK() );

  • Strings longer than 127 characters

    Hello,
    is it now possible to add a String from a POJO with more than 127 characters?
    Thanks
    Christian

    When you design a Crystal Reports report in Crystal Reports for Eclipse, where you drop in a POJO class for a datasource, you'll see that all String columns are given the default length of 127.
    When you inject a Collection of POJO class instances into the report using the setDataSource(java.util.Collection, ...), you'll see that any String with length greater than 127 is truncated.
    How do you avoid this?
    In the JRC for XI R2 - you could re-compile the pojoSample.jar file after modifying the default value, or you could specify a longer length using the POJOResultSetFactory.setMemberColumnDisplaySize(...) method.
    The POJOResultSetFactory method for Crystal Report for Eclipse has been renamed and incorporated into rasapp.jar.  The source code for the POJO factory classes are no longer provided - thus, the XI Release 2 solutions do not work.
    So what you will need to do for CR for Eclipse, is you must manually create the ResultSet by invoking the com.crystaldecisions.sdk.occa.report.application.internal.POJOResultSetHelper class directly - POJOResultSetHelper is for CR4E what POJOResultSetFactory was for XI Release 2.
    Here's a code snippet:
        // SimplePojo.class is my POJO class, getName is a String property for the class,
        // and arrayList is the Collection of POJO class instances.
        POJOResultSetHelper pojoHelper = new POJOResultSetHelper(SimplePojo.class);
        pojoHelper.setMemberColumnDisplaySize("getName", 256);
        java.sql.ResultSet rs = pojoHelper.createResultSet(arrayList);
        reportClientDocument.getDatabaseController().setDataSource(rs, "SimplePojo", "SimplePojo");

  • File seek in wlst fails for lines longer than 8091 characters

    For a CSV file generated in WLST i want to update the header, the first line of the output file, when new metrics have been detected. This works fine by using seek to go to the first line and overwriting the line. But it fails when the number of characters of the first line exceeds 8091 characters.
    I made simplified script which does reproduce the issue i am facing here.
        #!/usr/bin/python
        import sys
        global maxheaderlength
        global initheader
        maxheaderlength=8092
        logFilename = "test.csv"
        # Create (overwrite existing) file
        logfileAppender = open(logFilename,"w",0)
        logfileAppender.write("." * maxheaderlength)
        logfileAppender.write("\n")
        logfileAppender.close()
        # Append some lines
        logfileAppender = open(logFilename,"a",0)
        logfileAppender.write("2nd line\n")
        logfileAppender.write("3rd line\n")
        logfileAppender.write("4th line\n")
        logfileAppender.write("5th line\n")
        logfileAppender.close()
        # Seek back to beginning of file and add data
        logfileAppender = open(logFilename,"r+",0)
        logfileAppender.seek(0) ;
        header = "New Header Line" + "." * maxheaderlength
        header = header[:maxheaderlength]
        logfileAppender.write(header)
        logfileAppender.close()
    When maxheaderlength is 8091 or lower i do get the results as expected. The file test.csv starts with “New Header Line" followed by 8076 dots and followed by the lines 2nd line 3rd line 4th line 5th line
    When maxheaderlength is 8092> the test.csv results as a file starting with 8092 dots followed by "New Header Line" and then followed by 8077 dots. The 2nd ... 5th line are now show, probably overwritten by the dots.
    Any idea how to work around or fix this ?

    For the benefit of others, i got a workaround from Jeremy Gosling on a crosspost on stackoverflow.
    I too was able to reproduce this extremely odd behaviour and indeed it works correctly in Jython 2.5.3 so I think we can safely say this is a bug in 2.2.1 (which unfortunately you're stuck with for WLST).
    My usual recourse in these circumstances is to fall back to using native Java methods. Changing the last block of code as follows seems to work as expected :-
    # Seek back to beginning of file and add data
    from java.io import RandomAccessFile
    logfileAppender = RandomAccessFile(logFilename, "rw")
    logfileAppender.seek(0) ;
    header = "New Header Line" + "." * maxheaderlength
    header = header[:maxheaderlength]
    logfileAppender.writeBytes(header)
    logfileAppender.close()

  • How to Handle the Strings more than 4000 characters in OBIEE 11g

    Hi Folks,
    I have a derived column in RPD where there are like bunch of case statements which involve the columns from 2 or more dimensions. Now I am getting an error ORA-01489: result of string concatenation is too long at OCI call OCIStmtFetch.
    How can we handle this in OBIEE? I have tried the below option that is provided in the below link but I think this work only if it is a single column but in my case it is derived column.

    Helena, I think you might get a better response either from the SQL-PL/SQL forum, or perhaps the Portal Applications forum - both of these tend to have folks very familiar with PL/SQL and the OWA packages.
    This forum is on Web services based on SOAP, WSDL and UDDI. These can be PL/SQL based but typically don't use the mod_psql or OWA web solution.
    As a pointer, I suspect you may already be familiar with, but just in case, you can always take a look at chapter 3 of the OAS documentation, "Developer's Guide: PL/SQL and ODBC Applications" where they go through a number of examples using parameters. See:
    http://technet.oracle.com/doc/appsrvr4082/guides/plsql.pdf
    Hope this or folks from the other list can help.

  • Insert more than 4000 characters using sql plus

    I have a SQL script that creates a database. The problem is that some of the fields are longer than 4000 characters in the INSERT statement and Oracle doesn't seem to like it.
    The field is a clob and works fine in the application (i.e. I can insert more than 4000 characters using the app) - how do I achieve this in a SQL script?
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Steve

    Hi,
    This pl/sql block works absolutely fine in SQL*Plus inserting > 4000 characters into clob column:
    declare
    l_str varchar2(8000);
    l_str1 varchar2(2400) := 'first part of the verly long string...';
    l_str2 varchar2(2400) := 'second part of the verly long string...';
    begin
    l_str := l_str1 || l_str2;
    insert into tmpl values (l_str);
    end;
    So, you'll have to replace inserts with pl/sql blocks in your script.
    Tested in Oracle 8.1.7.0.0

  • How to pass a string longer than 30 to an Export Parameter in a PI sheet ?

    Hi All,
    I'm trying to set  up a process instruction in a PI sheet that calls a URL web page.
    I found the function module CALL_BROWSER and tested it in SE37 and it works fine.
    I created a process instruction to call this function module and pass parameters to it.
    Everything works if the URL is short.  For example:
    0010   PPPI_BUTTON_TEXT          Show URL
    0020   PPPI_FUNCTION_NAME          CALL_BROWSER
    0030   PPPI_FUNCTION_DURING_DISPLAY     allowed
    0040   PPPI_EXPORT_PARAMETER          URL
    0075   PPPI_STRING_CONSTANT          http://www.google.com
    This is where I ran into a roadblock.
    The characteristic PPPI_STRING_CONSTANT is only 30 characters long.
    I can't figure out how to pass an export parameter longer than 30 characters.
    I have also tried loading up multiple PPPI_VARIABLE(s) with the idea of some how combining them into a single long string that I can pass, but no luck figuring out how.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Kind Regards
    Michael

    Thanks Dario, this is good information, but it does not directly solve my problem.
    I think I have figured out an approach, but was hopeing someone else had a standard solution.
    If I don't here something soon, I will try the following:
    Create a new function moduel as a shell or wrapper that calls the standard FM RUN_Browser.
    My shell will have 5 input parameters URLP1 thru URLP5.
    I can then pass a long URL to my shell in 5 parts.
    Inside my shell, the 5 parts will be joined up into 1 long string and passed on to the URL parameter in RUN_Browser.
    If anyone has a better idea, please let me know.
    Kind Regards

  • YOUTUBE says my account IS ABSOLUTELY eligible for uploads longer than 15 minutes but FCPX says i am NOT eligible...

    HELP! YOUTUBE says my account  is eligible for uploads longer than 15 minutes, however, I am trying to upload a file from Final Cut Pro X using the SHARE BUTTON and FCPX says my account is NOT ELIGIBLE for vides over 15 minutes. How can I make sure that Final Cut is updated with this proper info from youtube? PLEASE HELP!!! I HAVE TO GET A VIDEO UP ASAP!

    David and Keith have got this right. Don't depend on FCP to do the account verification and upload. Export your movie and use Compressor, or MPEG STreamclip, or QT Pro to spit out an h.264. Manually upload. Be generous in setting video quality. YT, Vimeo  et al will recompress and the more information your file contains (within reason) the better. Just make sure any interlaced material is de-interlaced (a vote for Compressor) and the process will be smoother if you give them 29.97 frame rates,

    *Action:
    Can anyone tell me why I am getting this error executing the same STORED PROCEDURE while inserting into the LONG column but when using RPAD functions for executing the same STORED PROCEDURE its not happening ?

    >
    But then why will the problem happen with this long string ?
    >
    You don't have a 'long string'. You have a lot of single-quoted strings combined with some unquoted strings.
    There are embedded singel quotes in what you call 'this long string'.
    Try using a different string delimiter so that the quotes do not cause a problem.
    You can use an exclamation point ('!') since there is none in the text you provided.
    Here is an example of what will not work because there is one embedded single quote
    'name LIKE '%DBMS_%%'This is the same value using exclamation as the delimiter - this works because there is no exclamation in the string
    q'!name LIKE '%DBMS_%%'!'1. q must be the first character
    2. ' (single quote) must be the next character
    3. ! (or any delimiter you choose) is the next character
    4. abcdefg. . . -- this is your string that can include single quotes but not an exclamation point
    5. ! is the next to last character - must be the same delimiter used as the third character
    6. ' (single quote) is the last character
    See the 'Text Literals' section of the SQL Reference for more examples
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14200/sql_elements003.htm
    Note that this one will not work because the string includes the percent
    This is the same value using exclamation as the delimiter - this works because there is no exclamation in the string
    q'%name LIKE '%DBMS_%%'%'

    The default characters allowed maximum specified in the technical field is 18 characters. The abaper also checked and confirmed that it is specified as 18 characters.
    This is only for a single employee.
    Please provide your suggestions.
    Thanks

    Jyothsna,
    You need to extend Bank Account number length....even though 18 will be the max length..by default assignment of length will be different from country to country. So you need to extend the length of Bank a/c number in trasaction OY17.....select the country and change the bank a/c number length to 18 and Checking rule to 5 max value length.
