ORA-12741: Express Instant Client: unsupported server character set LV8PC8L

How Can I connect to database???
I've setup a 10g XE on trustix linux 3.0.5
Compiled oci8 and pdo_oci
I'm trying to connect to windows database running an old Oracle 8.1 database
Any ideas how i can read data from that database - WITHOUT MODIFYING IT ?

I'm not clear how you're connecting but this error could mean that you don't have transalations for Latvian Version IBM-PC Code Page 866 8-bit Latin/Cyrillic (LV8PC8LR). If that's the case it masquerades as the error when the underlying error can't be rendered in the language. This is my best guess.

I installed Oracle 8.05 on Linux successfully: was able to login

During this install I chose WE8ISO8859P9 as the database

After that I installed Oracle Application Server 3.02, and now
    I'm getting the

    NLS_LANG set to different settings,

    Anyone any clue?

You can create the database with WE8DEC character set
and to use the WE8ISO8859P9 on the client or even on Linux.
The NLS_LANG setting doesn't effect the database, but the
interface with the database. The same setting can be used in de
    windows 95/98/NT registry.

  • ORA-12514 error: Instant Client 11 connect to remote Oracle 8i

I encountered a problem that I have spent hours fixing that. Here is the problem:
I am trying to connect to a remote Oracle 8i server using Oracle 11 instant client: here is my connection string in PHP:
    *$conn = oci_connect('db_user', 'db_pass', "db_ip/db_service");*
db_ip is the ip of the server, such as "12.34.56.78". db_service is the service of server, such as "test".
The error shown is "*ORA-12514:* TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"
I could use the same client to connect to another oracle 10g server. The php code is same, only change the db_user or db_pass or db_ip. db_service is not provided.
I dont use tnsnames.ora for either oracle *10g s*erver or oracle 8i server. I just use the simple IP of server. Does this matter?
Server using: Windows Server 2008 R2
    PHP: php 5.2.17
    Oracle Instant Client: 11_2
    Any ideas will be appreciated.
    Best, Sam

Pl do not post duplicates - PHP 5.2.17 and Oracle 8i

  • Client-side greek character set problem

    hi everyone,
i am a .net developer and absolutelly new to oracle, its my first project that i have make oracle and .net co-operate and it's proving to be a nightmare!
i ll try and provide as much info as possible to you
we have a unix sap server with oracle 10.something on it (i can check exactly what version if that's of importance) and i am writting a .net app which accesses the oracle db and retrieve some data we need
the locale settings of the db are american_america.we8dec and i cannot temper with that machine, it is out of the question
i have made the connection to the db using just connection string info, not tns and stuff, and i have set my dev machine's nls_lang to we8dec everywhere i could find it with a 'find' in the registry
however my app displays the data (which is in greek) showing random symbols that obviously make to sense
furthermore when i connect to the db via sql developer or navicat i still get the same symbols
i understand it is something to do with my client system's settings but i cant work it out
i would really appreciate your help i am sorry if it is something very simple but i just cant find it

It's a brand new universe, but if you take it step by step I'm sure you'll do fine. Get someone near with Oracle dev and dba background to guide you, so you don't get stuck or go down broken roads.
we have a unix sap server with oracle 10.something on it (i can check exactly what version if that's of importance)It is of importance most of the time. Down to at least 4 positions (for example, "10g" is just a marketing label and mostly useless in a techincal context - 10.2.0.5 is more like it).
Also mention platform (unix OS) details.
and i am writting a .net app which accesses the oracle db and retrieve some data we needHow is the to-be retrieved data loaded or entered to begin?
    >
the locale settings of the db are american_america.we8dec and i cannot temper with that machine, it is out of the question Please post output from:
    SQL> select * from nls_database_parameters where parameter like '%CHARACTERSET';
and i have set my dev machine's nls_lang to we8dec everywhere i could find it with a 'find' in the registryDoes your dev (client) machine use a "we8dec" character set? Likely, as you seem to be on Windows, you should have set nls_lang client char set part to match win-1252 or whatever client char set (code page) is in use.
however my app displays the data (which is in greek) showing random symbols that obviously make to senseNo surprise since DEC character set does not have a greek character in its repertoire. If I'm not all mistaken DEC MCS (or similar) is the charcter set to which WE8DEC corresponds. You could check against mapping table in Locale builder, but available characters should be per following link or close enough.
    http://czyborra.com/charsets/iso8859.html#ISO-8859-1 (second chart is DEC-MCS)
Please provide a sample of those "random symbols".
furthermore when i connect to the db via sql developer or navicat i still get the same symbolsIf that's Oracle SQL Developer it should give a true picture of what's actually stored - which, unfortuantely, seem to be invalid character data.
i understand it is something to do with my client system's settings but i cant work it out See above. But even if you correctly setup client environment, the db won't be able to store the data if databas character set is in fact WE8DEC.
    >
i would really appreciate your help i am sorry if it is something very simple but i just cant find it I'm not sure, but it would seem as you have been given unfeasible conditions to work from. So maybe it's not up to you, until a character set migration has been taken place.
In general, the Database character set should be a suitable superset (repertoire) that covers all current (and hopefully future) language alphabets requirements.
You might want to search forum for 'we8dec' to find previous related discussions.
    Edit:
    - Added url with DEC MCS.
    - platform info

  • Checking server character set

I think this is a simple question, but for some reason I am not able to find the result.
How can I check the server's default character set?
We have HP-UX (unix) servers, and most databases are set to AL32UTF8/AL16UTF16.
I thought it would be something simple like typing 'locale', but on the HP-UX box(es), it doesn't show any setting for LANG.
I also executed 'env' and looked at all settings, but nothing seems relevant.
Unless I explicitly set the NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.AL32UTF8, when I do an export, it shows:
Export done in US7ASCII character set and AL16UTF16 NCHAR character set
server uses AL32UTF8 character set (possible charset conversion)
Where is it getting the US7ASCII?
If I select * from nls_database_parameters; there is no setting like US7ASCII.
When I do a 'man -k character', I get numerous possible commands, but none of them appear to be something that displays the default character set.
But, as I noted above, when I run an export of our database (without setting the NLS_LANG), it shows me that the default character set is US7ASCII.
So, how do I show this, and if you might also have any ideas how to change this to UTF8.
    Thanks.
removed references in this posting to my linux boxes...

The default O/S character set for Unix is 7-bit ASCII. This is element of so-called "C locale". This locale is used by all applications that do not declare themselves sensitive to user locale (i.e. they do not call setlocale() at application startup) and by all applications that have no locale parameters (LANG, or LC_xxxx) set in their environment.
If you call 'locale' in a Unix session that has no locale environment set, the "C locale" should be reported.
"C locale" uses US locale formatting conventions and binary collation.
    ## "Export done in US7ASCII character set and AL16UTF16 NCHAR character set
    ## server uses AL32UTF8 character set (possible charset conversion)"
Here, US7ASCII is the default character set of an Oracle Client. It is not directly related to the default O/S character set. US7ASCII is always the default Oracle client character set on all non-EBCDIC platforms, used if NLS_LANG is not explicitly set.

  • Toad with Oracle Instant Client 10.2.0.1.0(not able to locate tnsnames.ora

    Hi,
I have both Oracle Client 9.2 and Instant Client 10.2.0.1.0 on my laptop. How to make Toad 8.5.1 locate tnsnames.ora file for instant client.
When I open Toad, and selects "Instant Client 10.2.0.1.0" as installed client, it shows the error message "tnsnames.ora not found!"
    Below is the setting:

    ORACLE_HOME: C:\Program Files\PHP\
    ORACLE_SID:

    C:\Program Files\PHP\ is in PATH.
    Client DLL: C:\Program Files\PHP\oci.dll
    Client Version: 10.2.0.1.0
    Home is valid.
    Thanks

Sal, your comment is pretty irrelevant to the question :^)
user570251, since you are restricted to using Windows, it will not be easy for you to use two different Oracle clients on the same machine.
Basically, you'll have to change TNS_ADMIN whenever you want to change between clients.
Why do you need two client versions on your computer?

  • Connectionstring to be used in ASP for instant client ??

    Hi,
I'm trying to use oracle instant client for one of my projects.
I have installed basic, sqlplus and ODBC for instant client.
I have set all the environment variables. I have the tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora
So far I have succeeded in connecting to a DB Server through sqlplus. I also created a DSN successfully using the driver "Oracle in instantclient10_2" which gets installed when I install instant client ODBC. These indicate that mos tof settings are right. It is good so far.
Now I'm trying to use a connection string in ASP which connects to a DB server using this instant client.
I need one DSN connection string and one DSN-less connection string.
So far I have tried the following:-
    1)
    Driver={Oracle in instantclient10_2};Server=<Service Name>;Uid=<UserID>;Pwd=<Password>;
    This resulted in the error:-
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
    [Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error
    2)
    StrCon.Open "Driver={Oracle in instantclient10_2};Dbq=<Server IP address>:<port>/<serviceName>", "UserID", "Password"
    This resulted in the error:-
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
[Oracle][ODBC][Ora]ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor
Can you please help me out with these?
    Thanks in advance
    Jai

    Hello,
I tried to use either of the 2 connections you gave but I still get an error:
    DSN
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers error '80004005'
Specified driver could not be loaded due to system error 5 (Oracle in instantclient10_2).
    DSN-less Connectionstring:
Specified driver could not be loaded due to system error 5 (Oracle in instantclient10_2).
    Thanks in advance,
Do you have an idea as why this happens?

I tested the Oracle Instant Client with a Oracle 9i release 2 server running on Windows with Visual Studio.net 2005 enterprise.
Here are my tips concerning environment variables:
    1. make sure no other oracle directory is in your PATH
    2. set your PATH to point to your instant client
    3. set your TNS_ADMIN to point to where you tnsnames.ora file is located
    4. set your NLS_LANG
    5. set your ORACLE_HOME to your instant client
For me, I set NLS_LANG to
    http://download-east.oracle.com/docs/html/A95493_01/gblsupp.htm#634282
I verified this was using the correct client software by using the sqlplus add-on to the instant client.
    For me, I set:
    SET NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8MSWIN1252
Note: before you make any changes, back up your Oracle registry key (if exist) and backup the string for any environment variables.
Read the Oracle Instant Client FAQ here:

  • Instant Client Installation help

    Hello
I'm relatively beginner. I'm having a win2k machine which i want to setup as a client to oracle 9i server which i'm able to telnet and work. What should i do??. I have downloaded (instant client basic + odbc) and set the path...install from the batch file.. but it didn't work when i tried to add instant client in odbc datasource administrator. It shows could not load setup or translator lib. Please help.

hrrmmm ... a year later and I'm having exactly the same problems. Anybody have a solution to this one? It looks like the driver proxy that was installed cannot find some dependent DLLs, but that's just me guessing.
I have installed the basic package, and I can connect with SQLPlus (and the JDBC drivers). Now I want to connect and ODBC app (windows, yech) to the db, so I unpacked the ODBC addon, set PATH, and ran the odbc_install.exe (which reported success). Trying to create a new datasource, however, yields:
"The setup routines for the Oracle in instantclient10_1 ODBC driver could not be loaded due to system error code 5."
"Could not load the setup or translator library"
    Anyone have suggestions?

  • Import error due to character set difference?

    hi,
hoping anyone to explain reason for the following import error.
    here's the situation,
    - export client used WE8MSWIN1252 charset (release v10.02.01)
    - import server used WE8ISO8859P1 charset (release v10.1.0.4)
all tables appeared to be imported without error, except that import terminated unsuccesfully due to oracle error 2248
    "ALTER SESSION SET PLSQL_OPTIMIZE_LEVEL =1 NLS-LENGTH_SEMANTICS = 'BYTE' PLSQL_CODE_TYPE = 'INTERPRETED' PLSQL_DEBUG = FALSE PLSQL_WARNING = 'DISABLE:ALL' PLSQL_CCFLAGS =''"
ORA-02248: invalid option for ALTER SESSION
was error due to the difference release version? char set conversion to non superset?
    appreciate any help pls

It is difficult to say what is the current state of the database, so it is recommended to reexport and reimport the object definitions. You may miss some other stuff like object types, contraints, etc. Table data should be OK, so reexport should not include data.
As far as character sets are concerned, because of the difference between the export client character set and the import server character set, you may have lost some characters in the code range 0x80-0x9f. This includes Euro sign, TM, sign, "smart" quotes, en- and em-dash, etc. Use the Windows charmap.exe to see all the codes. If you have some of these codes in the source database, you have lost them on import (they got converted to the reverse quotation mark code 0xbf).

  • How to change the Character Set from AL32UTF8 to WE8DEC

    Hello!!
I want to know how to change the character set in the database from AL32UTF8 to WE8DEC.
I tried to use the comand ALTER DATABASE CHARACTER SET but I got an error because WE8DEC is not a superset of AL32UTF8.
I need to import tables from a server that uses WE8DEC. So when I do the import to my server, wich has AL32UTF8 , I can't import the rows that include an Ñ.
So I want to change the caracter set to WE8DEC. How can I do it?
Is it needed to change the language configuration? The remote server has AMERICAN_AMERICA, and my server has MEXICAN SPANISH_MEXICO (both uses text in spanish).
    Thanks a lot!!

When you export from WE8DEC server what did you use
for NLS_LANG char set? And when importing?
The export was done in another computer because I can't do the export in the server (I have 10g, and the remote server has 9i and the export is not working). In my server, when I tried to do the import, the NS_LANG value was MEXICAN SPANISH_MEXICO.WE8MSWIN1252.
When I try to import to my database I got the error:
import done in WE8DEC character set and AL16UTF16 NCHAR character set
import server uses AL32UTF8 character set (possible charset conversion)
export client uses WE8MSWIN1252 character set (possible charset conversion)

  • Character set change? Help!

    Hi,
I am doing imports and the export client uses ZHS16GBK character set (simplified chinese) and my imports are done in
US7ASCII which is not a super set of the aforementioned character set. I want to change to ZHS32GB18030 which is a super set
of US7ASCII and ZHS16GBK. Is it possible to change my character set in sql plus?
Also could this character conversion cause an IMP-00008 error (unrecognized statement in export file)?

This one my logs. It has the error ORA 942, this is an error that I have found in most of my files that I am importing:

From doing research I have found that IMP-00008 is because the file is corrupt. Is this always the case?
Also, you said there errors would not be because of a character set conversion issue, does that mean I do need to change my character set?

  • Migrate character set

I try to imp dmp file from oracle 9i to oracle 10g xe but it comes with this error msg
Export file created by EXPORT:V09.02.00 via direct path
import done in WE8MSWIN1252 character set and AL16UTF16 NCHAR character set

export client uses US7ASCII character set (possible charset conversion)
IMP-00031: Must specify FULL=Y or provide FROMUSER/TOUSER or TABLES arguments
    IMP-00000: Import terminated unsuccessfully
Is it dmp file was done using ascii rather than binary mode?
Do I have to migrate the character set from US7ASCII to WE8MSWIN1252? or any other idea?

Hello, I have the same problem.
I have an oracle 10g and I would like to transfert my data in Oracle XE database (Os Linux Opensuse and univ version for XE).
My database 10g, have charset US7ASCII and my database XE, AL32UTF8.
When I transfert data, I have error ORA-12899 insert value too long for column.
    Could you help me ?
ThanksThat's because US7ASCII is single byte character set and AL32UTF8 is multiple bytes CS. One char in AL32UTF8 could result more than one byte of storage.
    You have few options,
    1. migration your 10g database to AL32UTF8 CS. It will also benefit in the long run.
    2. dump out create table statement from XE dump file. change all CHAR/VARCHAR type to NCHAR/NVARCHAR type and prerun the script to create new tables in 10g. This should take care of the column issue for this time.

  • Customising character sets

We are trying to migrate to an oracle 8.1.7 database with UTF8 as database character set. A lot of the clients (windows) will still be using a company-specific character set, so there was an need to define/compile/install this character set in the NLS directory of oracle using .nlt files and the lxinst utility.
While was trying to do this, a some questions emerged that where not addressed in the oracle documentation for NLS and Globalisation.
The custom character set is based on the US-ASCII character set, so I thought to use
    base_char_set = US7ASCII
and define the other characters starting from 0x80 and ending with 0xff
    -     but when I tried to compile this charset on AIX (server side) it gave a lot of warnings:
LXI-WARN-00510: In lx22712.nlt at line 88, unicode 0x300 out of private use range
LXI-WARN-00512: In lx22712.nlt at line 88, character 0x80 is remapped
LXI-WARN-00510: In lx22712.nlt at line 89, unicode 0x302 out of private use range
LXI-WARN-00512: In lx22712.nlt at line 89, character 0x81 is remapped
    -     when I tried to compile this on windows 2000 (client side) lxinst generates an application error
Because this base_char_set definition did not work (or I made a mistake), I left it out of the definition file, and I mapped the characters using:
    character_data = {
    0x00 - 0x7f : 0x0000 - 0x007f,
this compiles fine on both platforms. But this means that I have to fill in the classification list, the upper-to-lower and lower-to-upper relationships for all these characters, so it would be a lot easier if this base_char_set worked.
    other questions:
    -     About the character classification list:
can such a list contain more than 2 classifications? For example
    0xC0 = {LETTER, UPPER, PRINTABLE}
what are exactly the differences between those classifications? (for example can a character be a LETTER but not PRINTABLE)
    -     What about combining characters: in most character sets (also in ours) a combining character precedes the character it will be combined with, in a string. In Unicode the combining character comes after the character it will be combined with. When oracle converts strings between two such charsets, will the combining characters be handled according to the character set it is converting to, or will the order of characters in the string stay the same?

    Thanks for the help,
the reason for needing a customised character set is not because of a special input device. Our current client uses this character set (not a standard) to support scripts for different languages. Since we want future clients to use the unicode standard, and want to support more scripts in the future, we are migrating our DB to UTF8, but our old clients should still be able to connect and query the DB (for now).
I cannot find this developers version of the OLB. In
Oracle Technology Network > Software >
there is no entry in the drop down boxes for this (or am I looking in the wrong place?)
thank you a lot for the help,
    regards,
