ORA-30689: improper value for ORA_DEBUG_JDWP

I'm setting up PL/SQL debugging from an ASP.Net application. I've followed all of the steps from cshay's blog. I am able to debug and connect directly from the Oracle Explorer. My problem occurs when I run debug and try to step through from the .Net code.
Some things to Note:
We have a central library that uses .Net Reflection and the System.Data.OracleClient to instatiate connections and condense some SQL querying processes so that we don't have to parameterize and write full queries in the application over and over again. I cannot change this library.
The error listed above appears when I have the following setup:
* Oracle Application Debugging is checked
* VS 2005 asp.net web app
* Using the development (local) webserver
* Exception Details: System.Data.OracleClient.OracleException: ORA-30689: improper value for ORA_DEBUG_JDWP
* Process explorer properties say that the ORA_DEBUG_JDWP variable is set to host=machineName;port=49152
* web app comes up in http://localhost:xxxx
* When I ping machineName, I get my ip address
* When I ping localhost, I get the local ip 127.0.0.1
* Oracle db 9.2.0.6
* The error occurs when my application first trys to obtain a connection to the database (just a select statement and only when I have OADebuggin turned on)
Any help on this would be appreciated. Otherwise, I'll have to figure out why my SQL Developer instance won't debug correctly.
Thank you.
shellie

Thanks for the quick response Christian.
1) Are you using ODAC 11g beta?
Yes I downloaded it yesterday. In Visual studio in 'about' I have:
Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET 11.1.0.5.10 Beta
Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio .NET Copyright (c) 2005, 2007
2) Are you setting ORA_DEBUG_JDWP anywhere? If so, what are you setting it to?
No I am not setting it anywhere. I used process explorer and when I debug it is set to my IP address (i.e. the host of my dev environment on W2K3 and not the Unix Server hosting Oracle) and port 49152.
I've also logged on the to Unix server and from there telneted into my W2K3 server on port 49512 and got a "JDWP-handshake" response so the network looks fine.
So ... #1 is Yes and #2 is No. So I followed your instructions ... and I got some expert oracle and unix assistance when i got the following ...
There is nothing in any trc file that has anything like "kqaccd: ORA_DEBUG_JDWP". A grep "DEBUG" *.trc shows nothing anywhere.
Another bit of info .... I get a ORA_DEBUG_JDWP type of error from time to time. Seems mainly to be on connections to databases that I've connected to before. If I close VS2005 and re-open VS2005 - everything is back to normal.
I can step into and run s.p. directly from VS2005 so that's something.
(Also another thing I noticed is that even though I'm logged own as the schema owner I can not change/re-order columns in an index as they are greyed out. Also - and this is not good as I would like developers to be able to optimise their queries - you can not scroll through the list of columns in an index if the list of columns is larger than the list box. I can live without the former but the later is highly desirable.)
Thanks for your help with this Christian. (I really like ODT and can see it becoming indespensible very quickly).
Cheers,
Chris.

    the text of the error message is pretty self explanatory .. it couldn't find the control file.
    The control files are specified by the "control_files"  initialilzation paramter.  When you get this error, the instance has started but was unable to mount the control file.  since the init file (spfile) was processed and the instance started you can easily see what it thinks are the control files.

    Additionally I found this matrix, which explains your problem:
    UTF8 (1 to 3 bytes) AL32UTF8 (1 to 4 bytes)
    MIN MAX MIN MAX
    CHAR 2000 666 2000 500
    VARCHAR2 4000 1333 4000 1000 */
    For column PASSWORD the maximum length is used (4000). UTF8 uses maximal 3 bytes for a character, while AL32UTF8 may use up to 4 characters. So a column defined in AL32UTF8 may contain characters, which do not fit in a corresponding UTF8 character.

  • 'ORA-01401 inserted value too large for column' - 9i

    I am migrating a java application from 8i to 9i. The application is writing data to a oracle 8i database without any problem.
    When the underlying database source is switched to oracle 9i database(same databaseschema as 8i) by pointing to 9i instance , the application is
    encountering the error: 'ORA-01401 inserted value too large for column' when trying to insert a particular field. The fileld is declared as varchar2(400) in the both the database.
    The debug output from application also shows that the column data being inserted as 10 characters.The insert statement from SQLPLUS works fine. So it's looks like an issue with the JDBC driver for the 9i server. I am wondering if anyone has observed such strange behavior.
    Thanks
    Vijay

    Vijay,
    Are you using OCI driver ? There is a known issue with OCI driver when using setFixedCHAR before an INSERT statement. This problem only happens with a string of length zero. There is no known issue with THIN Driver. This is fixed in Oracle9i Release 2.

    Hi,
    May be this problem is not with the NULLIF. The value for the date column is not in proper date format.
    create table:

    Control file:
    LOAD DATA

    ename position(4:5) char NULLIF ename=BLANKS,
    deptno position (7:8) integer external NULLIF deptno=BLANKS,
    hiredate position (10:20) date NULLIF hiredate=BLANKS)

  • EXEC SQL Error: ORA-01401: Inserted value too large for column

    Getting this SQL Error: ORA-01401: Inserted value too large for column..on an EXEC SQL Insert statement when writing to an
    external Oracle DB from SAP.
    On further analysis..it appears that this happens to the fields..when the string length matches the field length.
    Example:  Plant field is defined as char(4) on the SAP side and it is a Varchar2(4) on the Oracle side.
    When a value like '1015' is passed thru a variable in the insert statement then this ORA-01401 error pops up.
    No error:
       - if the value '1015' is passed directly in the insert statement to the external table  (or)
       - when a value with 3 chars or less(like the first three chars..101) is passed thru a variable  defined as 'Plant(4) type c'.
       - when using EXEC sql within SAP
       - when reading from the external db table
    This was working ok until the  Oracle Patch P9147110 was installed recently.
    Any suggestions !

    Hello Dvas,
    what's the characterset of your external database?
    What's the column definition in your external database (byte or character based)?
    If you use a characeterset like UTF8 it is possible, that one character needs more than one byte and then you will run into such kind of issues if the definition is too small.

  • Snapshot refresh error:  ora-01401 inserted value too large for column

    I have an error ora-01401 "Inserted value too large for column" when I try to do a refresh on a group at the materialized view site.
    My model is 1 master replicating to a readonly materialized view site. I have 2 refresh groups for separate sets of tables. 1 refresh group work fine...the other I got the above error.
    I have doubled the rbs and system tablespace without any help thinking that I must be running out of default rollback segment space.
    Anyone has this before?

    The error is related to a field, not to any tablespace. This normaly happens to me when I change the lenght or resolution of a field in the base tables. The structure changes don't "flow" to the materialized view! I must "regenerate" them. Normally droping and creating it again to make them receive the new lenght of that field.
    Sometimes, when the field changed is not part of any primary key I have changes directly the field in the materialized view as if it was a normal table.
    Hope this helps

    Hi muthu,
    // inserted value too large for column
    When your oracle insertion throws this error, it implies that some value that you are trying to insert into the table is larger than the allocated size.
    Just check the format of your table and the respective size of each field on your oracle cleint by using the command,
    DESCRIBE <tablename> .
    and then verify it with the input. I dont think the problem is with the DATE format because if it is not a valid date format, you would have got on error like
    String Literal does not match type
    Hope this helps,

    I believe if you want to set this to null, you need to use double quotes, (as in os_authent_prefix="")

    To disable this feature, place the following lines in the initialization file, or change the lines to the following if they already exist and bounce the database.

  • ORA-35563: Multiple values exist for an attribute of this dimension member

    After following the tutorial Building OLAP Cubes I was trying to make a cube with aggregation down to the day instead of down to the month.
    I created a times table pretty similar to the one used in the tutorial:
    CREATE TABLE EVENT_TIMES (
            HOUR_KEY        DATE NOT NULL,
            DAY_ID          VARCHAR2(10),
            DAY_NAME        VARCHAR2(10),
            DAY_END_DATE    DATE,
            DAY_TIME_SPAN   NUMBER,
            MONTH_ID        VARCHAR2(30) NOT NULL,
            MONTH_NAME      VARCHAR2(40),
            MONTH_END_DATE  DATE,
            MONTH_TIME_SPAN NUMBER,
            YEAR_ID         VARCHAR2(30) NOT NULL,
            YEAR_NAME       VARCHAR2(40),
            YEAR_END_DATE   DATE,
            YEAR_TIME_SPAN  NUMBER
    As you can see, instead of a DAY_KEY like in the tutorial, I now use an HOUR_KEY.
    This is a sample of the data I inserted in this table:
    select to_char(hour_key,'YYYYMMDDHH24MISS'),DAY_ID,DAY_NAME,DAY_END_DATE,DAY_TIME_SPAN,MONTH_ID,MONTH_NAME,MONTH_END_DATE,MONTH_TIME_SPAN,YEAR_ID,YEAR_NAME,YEAR_END_DATE,YEAR_TIME_SPAN from event_times;
    TO_CHAR(HOUR_KEY,'YYYYMMDDHH24MISS') DAY_ID     DAY_NAME   DAY_END_DATE DAY_TIME_SPAN MONTH_ID                       MONTH_NAME                               MONTH_END_DATE MONTH_TIME_SPAN YEAR_ID                        YEAR_NAME                                YEAR_END_DATE YEAR_TIME_SPAN
    20140104050000                       Y2014M1D4  Y2014M1D4  04-JAN-14                1 Y2014M1                        Y2014M1                                  31-JAN-14                   31 Y2014                          Y2014                                    31-DEC-14                365
    20140104060000                       Y2014M1D4  Y2014M1D4  04-JAN-14                1 Y2014M1                        Y2014M1                                  31-JAN-14                   31 Y2014                          Y2014                                    31-DEC-14                365
    I then created my TIME dimension with DAY as the lowest level.
    When I try the maintain cube option it fails at the 'LOAD NO SYNCH' step with the rejected records having an error message that says:
    ORA-35563: (XSRWLD17) Multiple values exist for an attribute of this dimension member.
    To me, this is a very cryptic message and the only explanation I find online is:
    Cause
    Multiple source table rows containing different values for a dimension attribute were found. Only the first of the multiple rows has been loaded.
    Action
    Fix the mapping or remove the rows with conflicting attribute values..
    This confuses me. In the tutorial the lowest level was day and the TIMES table contained 1 record for each day.
    In my example, the lowest level is hour and the TIMES table contains 1 record for each hour.
    Which attribute has multiple values? And which values?
    The rejected records (101) are not very clear:
    ALIAS_1 = 'MONTH_Y2014M1' AND ALIAS_3 = to_date('31JAN14') AND ALIAS_4 = 31 AND ALIAS_5 = 'Y2014M1' AND ALIAS_6 = 'Y2014M1' AND ALIAS_7 = 'YEAR_Y2014'
    If anyone can help point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

    I have seen this recently. The issue is with the dimension load itself.  You have a hour level record table but the rules relating to hierarchy/attribute values etc are checked/reinforced during the load and this error comes up sometimes.
    I would guess that the issue seems to be with your month level information present in the higher level month columns. There are many records corresponding to a single month in ur case, month of Y2014M1. Information relating to Month level member Jan 2014 or member MONTH_Y2014M1 is present in these records: 31 (days) *24 (hours) = 744 records. The data in these 744 records for columns - MONTH_ID, MONTH_NAME, MONTH_END_DATE, MONTH_TIME_SPAN need to be exactly the same in order for the single member MONTH_Y2014M1 to have month attributes loaded with valid values.
    For e.g: if records #1 to #743 contain month_timespan=31 but for some unknown reason record #744 contains month_timespan=30 then this error will come up. OLAP does not know which value to load (31 or 30), and only 1 value can be loaded onto the month level member corresponding to month Y2014M1.
    A quick check of the data should give you the answer. Typically there may be some mistake/invalid assumptions made with the boundary records (in your case, check for values for records corresponding to hour=0 or hour=23/24) which is causing the issue.

  • Exporting Page fails with ORA-1401 inserted value too large for column

    Hi Everyone,
    I have a client what is getting the following error when
    attempting to export a page using pageexp.cmd. A simple page
    works for them but there main page does not. Here is the error:
    Extracting Portal Page Data for Export...
    begin
    ERROR at line 1:
    ORA-01401: inserted value too large for column
    ORA-06512: at "PORTAL30.WWUTL_POB_EXPORT", line 660
    ORA-06512: at "PORTAL30.WWUTL_POB_EXPORT", line 889
    ORA-06512: at line 5
    Has anyone seen this before?
    Is there any way we can narrow down why this occurs?
    There is no logging on this export option and the stored
    procedures used are wrapped.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Oracle Portal Version: 3.0.9.8.0

    we had this problem.
    We talked to some oracle person who said some portlets on a page had trouble exporting.
    Sure enough after we deleted all the portlets (one at a time to determine which one was giving us the problem. Turned out none of ours worked) the page exported and imported just fine.
    Hopefully this is being worked on...

  • Oracle 10g R2 for Windows ignores init.ora and registry values

    Hello,
    I have a strange issue. I try to set some parameters for Oracle but it doesn't seem to work.
    Here the story:
    I created the DB with the DBCA under windows and set my init parameter at frist creation with 3 important values:
    OS_AUTHENT_PREFIX = ""
    REMOTE_OS_AUTHENT=TRUE
    remote_login_passwordfile=EXCLUSIVE
    this values are in the Registry and the init.ora and the init.ora.7192011143454 in ORAHOME_DB/scripts and pfile
    I've now changed these parameters in the init.ora and registry to:
    OS_AUTHENT_PREFIX = ""
    REMOTE_OS_AUTHENT=FALSE
    remote_login_passwordfile=EXCLUSIVE
    and restarted the whole system - after the restart I checked the value for REMOTE_OS_AUTHENT:
    show parameter remote_os_authent
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    remote_os_authent boolean TRUE
    It keeps true. But why it keeps true why I can't change this value anymore after the DBCA?
    Do I miss something?
    Thanks

    show parameter spfile;
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    spfile string C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\DB_1\DATABASE\SPFILEMACSCURR.ORA
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    I have created a new spfile from my init.ora with:
    create spfile='C:\oracle\product..toMyInstanceDbs\ioglnx.ora' from pfile='C:\pathToPfile\DBHOME\scripts\init.ora'
    So the problems as it seem to me to instrcut oracle to use my new spfile...in Windows.
