Ora-367 on redo headers

Following a refresh of database from a prod copy, after creating new controlfile successfully, got ora-367 on redo headers on alter open resetlogs.
ORA-00367: checksum error in log file header
ORA-00318: log 8 of thread 1, expected file size 512 doesn't match 512
ORA-00312: online log 8 thread 1: '/oracle/PEF/origlogB/log_g18m1.dbf'

Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks for the reply, Srini :)
However, I discovered what happened.
In case I didn't say before (can't see it while typing this)...
This was a refresh of 1 database (non-prod) from another (prod) and cross-node netbackup/Rman/brbackup used.
What happened was this.
I'd scripted the rman restore separately from recovery, whereas in the past, I'd (as have all our other dbas) scripted both together on separate lines in 1 rman script.
While I was resting, awaiting restore completion (which occurred while I was out), another dba was asked to complete post-processing, that person assuming recovery had been done.
That other dba shutdown the target db, changed the init.ora to reference the correct controlfile locations and db_name, then did startup nomount, created a new control file, changing the db name, tried to bring it up and do post processing only to have problems.
That apparently garbaged my redo headers.
I was able to shutdown, re-edit the init.ora back to point to the temporary source control file and using the source db_name, then restart mount using the controlfile from the source again. Luckily.
That allowed me to complete recovery successfully.
One additional unrelated problem occurred that others who read this might want to know about.
I did not have the same redo log space sizes on disk as the source db did, though OS team was supposed to address this in advance :)...
Thus, my alter open resetlogs, when time to do so as the new target db, failed with no space left on device errors.
I was able to edit my create control file script (taken from a backup controlfile to trace on the source and edited appropriate to the target), forcing it to create smaller redo on the target. (work-around :) ).
I then shutdown again, removed the old redos (1st time I just renamed one to insure it would be recreated by the startup, ... it was)..., then did my create control file and alter open resetlogs with no further problems.
At the filesystem level, I was able to see it creating the redo files on the fly as it opened...
way cool.
Thanks again.

    Hi,
Instead of the logfile name, try the command with the logfile integer as mentioned below.
    alter database clear unarchived logfile group <integer>;
You can get the logfile integer using the view, v$log.
    select GROUP#,MEMBERS,STATUS from v$log;
The value for the parameter GROUP# is the logfile integer.
    Hope this helps.

    Summary
OK, this is way off. I don't in any way want to be unprofessional or rude but I'm not sure how to help without wasting you time or mine. So I'm going to take a few educated guesses and hope I'm helping you.
First I have a short note on how to do this here :
    http://www.visi.com/~mseberg/data_guard_on_oracle_11_step_by_step.html
Second, you really need to understand the Oracle parameters needed by Data Guard so I would ask you read :
Data Guard Concepts and Administration 11g Release 2 (11.2) E10700-02
The section in chapter 3 "Set Primary Database Initialization Parameters"
Third, you say vmware. By that do you mean two separate vmware servers? A Primary and a Standby of something else?
More details here might help. Vmware is fine, but if I'm setting this up I want two Servers, one for the Primary and one for the Standby database.
Will still post the details of Standby INIt ASAP
    Best Regards

You could check if the recovery was complete by (re)creating the controlfile with the resetlogs option.
<CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE define_db_name RESETLOGS NOARCHIVELOG

I did an "alter database backup controlfile to trace;" and then extracted the create controlfile definition part. So in essence I should run the following statements:
CREATE CONTROLFILE REUSE DATABASE "TESTDB" RESETLOGS  ARCHIVELOG
        MAXLOGFILES 16
        MAXLOGMEMBERS 3
        MAXDATAFILES 100

      'C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\ORADATA\TESTDB\USERS01.DBF'
    CHARACTER SET EE8MSWIN1250
    ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS;
ALTER TABLESPACE TEMP ADD TEMPFILE 'C:\ORACLE\PRODUCT\10.2.0\ORADATA\TESTDB\TEMP01.DBF' REUSE;Is that correct?
About the RMAN backups: Wouldn't a 'CATALOG RECOVERY AREA' populate the controlfile with backup information again (I'm not using a recovery catalog in this case)?
    Thanks for the help!

    Jure

  • Manual\DGMGRL Switchover Standby ora-01033 error

I have created a standby server for my SAP application as a part of test Disaster Recovery scenario. I can see the redo logs getting applied from primary to standby. However when I manually switchover the roles i encounters ORA -01033 error at NEW PRIMARY server and logs are also not getting applied in this scenario.
When i again changes the roles it works fine. I am not sure what is cause of ORA -01033 error. Here are the detailed tnsnames.ora of both sites.

  • Logmnr/capure error b'coz of corruption of redo log block

    Hi,
We all know that capture process reads the REDO entries from redo log files or archived log files. Therefore we need to ahev db in ARCHIVELOG mode.
In alert log file, I found error saying :
    Creating archive destination LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_1: 'E:\ORACLE\ORADATA\REPF\ARCHIVE\LOCATION01\1_36.ARC'

    ORA-00312: online log 2 thread 1: 'E:\ORACLE\ORADATA\REPF\REDO02.LOG'
As a normal practice, we do have multiplexing of redo log files at diff location, but even that second copy of redo log is of no use to recover the redo log. This explains redo log could not be archived, since it can't be read. Same is true even for Logmnr process, it could not read the redo log file and it failed. Now, we have wae to recover from this situation (as far as DB is concern, not Stream Replication), since the shutdown after this error was IMMEDIATE causing checkpoing, and rollback/rollforward is not required during system startup. (No instance recovery) We can make db NOARCHIVELOG mode, drop that particular group, and create new one, and turn db to ARCHIVELOG mode This will certainly serve the purpose as far as consistency of DB is concern.
Here is a catch for Stream Replication. The redo log that got corrupted must be having few transaction which are not being archived, and each will be having corresponding SCN. Now, Capture Process read the info sequentially in order of SCN. Few transaction are now missed, and Capture process can't jump to next SCN skipping few SCN in between. So, we have to re-instantiate the objects on the another system which has no erros, and start working on it. My botheration is what will happen to those missed transaction on the another database. It's absolete loss of the data. In development I can manage that. But in real time Production stage, this is a critical situation. How to recover from this situation to get back the corrupted info from redo log ?
I have not dropped any of the log group yet. B'coz I would like to recover from this situation without LOSS of data.
    Thanx, & regards,
    Kamlesh Chaudhary

I have the similar problem - I am using Steams environment, and have got this
"ORA-00353: log corruption near block" errors in the alert.log file
during capture the changes on the primary database, and Capture
    process became aborted after that.
Was that transactions lost, or after i've started the Capture process
again the were captured and send to the target database?
    Have anyone solved that problem?
Can you help me with it?

  • Redo / Archive Log Best Practices?

I am a newb when it comes to Oracle administration. The problem is that our "DBA" knows even less about it.
I'd like to get some advice/recommendations on redo and archive logs.
    We are currently running:
    Windows 2000 Server
    Oracle 8.1.7
    Oracle DB is ~50gb
    ~250 users
Database is under fairly heavy load, as it is used to run the company's primary accounting software.
Recently when reviewing back up procedures, I realized that our "DBA" did not have archive logging turned on. This obviously is a problem. Our DBA was relying solely on a data dump every night that was then backed up to tape. I was forced to take care of this, as the "DBA" didn't have any knowledge on this subject. I got archive logging turned on, changed the init file, etc. etc.
Where the problem comes in, and where my questions come from... The database was writing archive logs ~2-3 mins, sometimes less depending on the database load. Oracle was configured to use 3 redo logs @ ~105mb each. The server was getting "Archive process error: Oracle instance xxxx - Cannot allocate log, archival required." I changed the redo logs to run 5 logs at ~200mb each. I also added a scsi drive to the server for the sole purpose of storing the archive logs. Log Buffer was set at 64k, I upped this to 1mb.
    My specific questions are:
    - How fast should logs be being written?
    - Should I up the number of redo logfiles, or up the size of each?
    - Should I be writing the redo logs to multiple destinations?
    - Should I archive to multiple destinations? If so, would archiving to a network drive lag the archive process, and kill the bandwidth to the server/database since it would be writing 200mb+ files to the network every few minutes?
    - What are some recommended file size minimums / maximums under the current environment listed above?
    - Other tips/suggestions?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    hi,
    havce u configured LOG_ARCHIVE_START = TRUE ???
How fast should logs be being written?Should I up the number of redo logfiles, or up the size of each?

IF U WANT TO KEEP TIME BETWEEN FAILURES TO MINIMUM , THEN KEEP UR REDO LOG FILE SIZES TO SMALLER,,BUT ,,AS GENERALLY,,U SHUD TAKE IT TO A GOOD BIG ONE LIKE IN UR SITUATION I THINK IT SHUD BE AS:
    LOG_BUFFER = 104857600 --IN INIT.ORA (100MB)
5 REDO LOG FILES AT MULTIPLE LOCATIONS EACH OF THE SIZE 400 MB...
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT DON'T TAKE UR ARCHIVES ON A NETWORKED LOCATION AS IT WILL DEFINITLY OVERLOADS NETWORK TRAFIC AS WELL AS SLOWS DOWN ARCHIVAL SPEED.

How can I get Data Guard to see the standby database correctly again?

Thank you for the constructive feedback. I have been able to make progress on this issue.
I did check the Data Guard Log files as you suggested. I did not find anything when I checked them before but this time I found the following:

Subject: Ora-354 Ora-353 And Ora-312 Reported On Mirrored Redo Log Files
    Doc ID: Note:332672.1 Type: PROBLEM
Last Revision Date: 26-SEP-2005 Status: MODERATED
    In this Document
    Symptoms
    Cause
    Solution
    References
    Applies to:
Oracle Server - Enterprise Edition - Version: 8.1.7.4 to 10.2.0.0
This problem can occur on any platform.
    Symptoms
Following errors are reported in the alert log file:
ORA-354: corrupt redo log block header
ORA-353: log corruption near block 1892904 change 281470950178815
    ORA-312: online log 5 thread 1: '/oracle/redo02/log_05_B.dbf'
    ORA-312: online log 5 thread 1: '/oracle/redo01/log_05_A.dbf'
We see both the online redo log members are reported in the error.
    Cause
This is corruption in online redo log.
But not conclusive that both the members are corrupt as we see from the alert log.
If oracle detects a corruption when archiving a log member, it will try to read the same redo block from the second member of the group. If the block is found corrupt in all the members of the group, archiving will not proceed.
    In this case,
log_05_A.dbf was read first. Oracle detected corruption near block 1892904. (See Error description)
Oracle will now attempt to continue the archive operation from the second member, continuing from redo block 1892904.
There should be continuity of the redo information as we move and read from the second file.
But if Oracle cannot continue, ORA-312 is reported from second member also.
This could only happen due to an OS overwrite/missed write.
Error is because the archive processes will not start reading the second file from start by aborting the write made from the corrupted member. Instead it will try to continue from the block where the corruption was reported in first member.
Corruption of online redo log file should be checked as per Note 177559.1 in Metalink.
This Note applies to online redo log files also.
    Solution
    1. Issue the following command on both the redo log members.
SQL> ALTER SYSTEM DUMP LOGFILE 'filename'
    2. If the redo log member is corrupt, then the dump command will fail with the same error as when doing a media recovery with the same file.
    3. If the dump of any of the redo log member is successful then,
    a. shutdown the database.
    b. replace the bad member with a copy of the good redo log member using Operating system commands
    c. startup the database
has anyone faced such a problem
Point 3b says replacing with good redo log, where can we get this good redo log file
    thanks
    kedar

SAN drive is same and database is running in archive mode which are placed on share drive but the time when SAN issue ocurred the guy just stop OS level Oracle level services and restart the machine after coming up tried to start the database as startup command but database successfully mounted but fail to open it

    Hi Gurus,
I've posted few days ago an issue I got while recreating my Dataguard.
The Main issue was while duplicating target from active database I got this errors during the recovery process.
The Restore Process Went fine, RMAN Copied the Datafiles very well, but stop when at the moment to start the recovery process from the auxiliary db
Yesterday I took one last try,
I follow same procedure, the one described in all Oracle Docs, Google and so on ... it's not a secret I guess.
The I got the same issue, same errors.
I read soemthing about archivelogs, and the Block corruption and so on, I've tried so many things (register the log... etc etc ), and than I read something about "catalog the logfile)
    and that's waht I did.
But I was just connect to the target db.

knowing that my database is running in NOARCHIVELOG mode and i do not have any backup.
and why i am not able to start up any of the nodes? redo logs is not related to each node seperately ?
    I tried: srvctl start instance -d orcl -i orcl1 or srvctl start instance -d orcl -i orcl2

  • Database Recovery in NOARCHIVELOG Mode

    Hi All,
I was trying to 'startup' my database & encountered the following error in the alert.log
ORA-01242: data file suffered media failure: database in NOARCHIVELOG mode
ORA-01122: database file 469 failed verification check
    ORA-01110: data file 469: '/ora/ctcm_uat02/CMOLP1/undo/CMOLP1_undots_30.dbf'
ORA-01209: data file is from before the last RESETLOGS
I then looked up on the internet and since the error was related to the UNDO TABLESPACE, i did the following:
    sql>startup mount
    sql>alter database datafile '/ora/ctcm_uat02/CMOLP1/undo/CMOLP1_undots_30.dbf' offline drop;
    sql>alter database open
Thereafter the database kept on erroring on all the datafiles belonging to the undo tablespaces and i dropped all the datafiles belonging to the undo tablespace using the above command. (alter database datafile ....offline drop).
