Oracle 11 on CentOS 5.1
While running the Oracle install, the "Checking Network Configuration Requirements" fails. Or to be precise, it says that it did not execute. I see the following in the log file.
INFO: Checking DetectIfDHCPAssignedIP
This is a prerequisite condition to test whether the primary IP address of the system is DHCP-assiged or static.
INFO: Actual Result: Unknown Host Exception has Occurred :ganymede.localdomain: ganymede.localdomain.
Check complete. The overall result of this check is: Not executed
End error message. The system is configured with a static IP, and the hosts file looks as follows;
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.1.1 router
$ hostname
ganymede.localdomain
The error message is rather cryptic, "Unknown Host Exception has Occurred". Can anyone give me suggestions as to how debug this?
Where is 'ganymede' in your hosts file? If not in the hosts file, how do you resolve ganymede to the local host?

Problem Installation Oracle 10g Centos 5
Hello everyone!
I tell them my problem:
last week I'm trying to install 10g oragle realese 2 on linux. At first attempt to install on Ubuntu 11.10 but came to the installation and always had binding problems, I always look for a missing library every forum and never knew what it was. In previous versions of Ubuntu I never had problem. Another thing I do simulate linux on virtualbox.
To all this, I decided to throw out Ubuntu and I read that the distribution Centos 5 was a clone of Red Hat distribution, so, install linux all over again.
Install linux, I saw all the documentation of oracle 10g, I saw the notes on the installation, I did all the prerequisites, download the libraries that read the notes. and install it when I get this
oracle@localhost database]$ ./runInstaller -ignoreSysPrereqs

I use Arch as my everyday OS but I've been developing a few sites with Django and Ruby on rails and wondering what OS would be best suited for a server environment.
I'm building a custom dedicated box as well I'm not going to spend hundreds of dollars per month for dedicated hosting in which if you know what you're doing you're better off on your own + it's free once you have your box.
I've used Gentoo, Arch, and SUSE(OpenSUSE) as OSs and Suse seems very stable as SLES is generally OpenSUSE with it's server tools but updates aren't as quick which is ideal for a server environment.
With Gentoo or Arch you have to constantly update every month or every week, with gentoo I don't want to deal with mainly because of it's compile times which offer..really nothing over arch in terms of performance and even stability at this point which begs the question. Is source compiling even worth it? Even compiling from source with Arch is 10X quicker then gentoo.
For Servers though I would consider Arch but the constant updating freaks me out as an IT, Gentoo makes me want to jump off the ledge, Suse, CentOS, Oracle Linux, or even RedHat have less frequent updates and are made for the server and oh forgot about CloudLinux(cheap compared to suse or redhat per year. 14/mo 168/yr.) I've heard good things about Cloud Linux as well.

My experience with Arch suggests that it would be a poor choice for a server; it'll break. Sure, if you're competent you'll fix it. But it WILL break.
If you are comfortable with Arch I would consider CRUX. It is pretty darn sweet. Simpler. Much simpler. Custom built no-modules kernel. Source-based ports system, prt-get is nice (when you do have to update some software doing it from source will allow you to keep a stable core, i.e. you "backport" new versions). pkg-get could serve binaries to your server from your build machine.
Consider this minecraft server done with CRUX, http://minecraft.codeemo.com/index.html. There's a CRUX live CD http://cruxex.exton.net/. I know that Judd Vinet had wanted Arch to be useful as a server but even he questioned whether his team would be able to invent a way to spin off a stable release. Well, there is no stable release and Arch has become quite baroque compared to those early days. CRUX would be the pure Arch of yesteryear that can make an awesome server. -
Oracle. CentOS 6.2. NETCA. Use another port number.

But question is why netca can not use standart port, or any other port.
OS and oracle run in vmware. Network NAT. Os is run without X server. But it connect on ssh with other OS with X server.
P.S.
Sorry if my English is bad for you.

Oracle 10g installing on Oracle EL, getting ORA-12157 error?
My boss is getting really impatient. I have tried installing Oracle 10g on... Oracle EL, CentOS 4, Fedora 4, Fedora 5, and I get the same error on them alll...
ORA-12157: TNS: internal network communication error
This occurs during the end phase of the installation, when it says "Clone database creation". Network seems to be working, can ping the server, static IP, all that?
Any help appreciated, I've been working on this for 5 days.
JonVerbatim, this error means:
ORA-12157: TNS:internal network communication error
Cause: Internal error during network communication.
Action: Not normally visible to the user. For further details, turn on tracing and reexecute the operation. If error persists, contact Worldwide Customer Support.Have you met all requirements before proceeding with installation? Do you have all required patches? Is there any warnng during the prerrequisites verifying routine? Is there any outstanding issue recorded on your install log file?
I suggest you, after verifying above points, to go ahead wiht a software only installation, next, using the network and databse assistants perform a network configuration and a database creation, this way you'll be able to isolate the source of the problem and go ahead with a specific troubleshootig. -

hi,
I have installed VM WARE on my laptop now want to download linux ISO and Oracle ISO. Red Hat, Centos and Oracle Enterprise Linux are almost identical. The major differences are:
- Red Hat and Oracle Enterprise Linux are officially supported by Oracle to be used under Oracle products;
- CentOS is NOT officially supported
- the newer Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) includes an 'oracle-validate' rpm to reduce configuration guessing
Each Distro has it's purpose. I use SUSE and OpenSUSE for my office. And for general servers I use RedHat (when I need commercial support) and CentOS. I fully support CentOS and the CentOS community effort.
However, for the past year I have ONLY used Oracle Enteprise Linux under Oracle product. It is free, it is officially supported, if I need commercial support I can get it, and it has the Oracle Validated RPM to minimize my config effort. http://edelivery.oracle.com
So, as compared to the other respondent - I encourage using OEL and NOT CentOS. -
I'm planning to install Linux & Oracle 10GR2 into my Dell server at home that I bought so I can learn Oracle. Could anyone recommend what Linux should I install work best with Oracle 10GR2 and where should I download for free.
Thanks in advance,
VuThere are Linux distributions which are certified for Oracle SW (Redhat EL, SuSE ES, Asianux) but I think they are not downloadable for free (in full not just eval. vesion).
But there are distributions which you can download for free and there you can run Oracle.
Centos, WhiteBox Linux - there are distributions completely built from original RH EL packages.
I got good experience with Oracle on mainstrem distributions as Fedora and Suse.
Of course these distributions are not certified for Oracle products but Oracle is running fine on them.
But I think you could use whatever of Linux distribution.

Here is link to site which is tracking almost all Linux distributions and there you can find links for download - http://www.distrowatch.com -

Trouble adding regular oracle oci8 support to RPM, CentOs 5
Hello,
It seems that i'm missing smth simple while trying to add oci8 support to RPM.
I took Christopher Jones's SRPM for 5.2.3 as a base, but since i don't have and don't need a support for instant client i modified latest available 5.1.6 SRPM from CentOS 5 repo.

%description
PHP is an HTML-embedded scripting language. PHP attempts to make it
easy for developers to write dynamically generated webpages. PHP also
offers built-in database integration for several commercial and
non-commercial database management systems, so writing a
database-enabled webpage with PHP is fairly simple. The most common
use of PHP coding is probably as a replacement for CGI scripts.
The php package contains the module which adds support for the PHP
language to Apache HTTP Server.

Download & Install the following rpm and retry oracle installation.
http://oss.oracle.com/projects/compat-oracle/dist/files/Enterprise_Linux/xorg-x11-libs-compat-6.8.2-1.EL.33.0.1.i386.rpm
installation
rpm -i xorg-x11-libs-compat-6.8.2-1.EL.33.0.1.i386.rpm
After the RPM, is installed, you will also need to override the /usr/lib/libXtst.so.6 with the one from /usr/X11R6/lib/libXtst.so.6.
As root, issue the commands:
mv /usr/lib/libXtst.so.6 /usr/lib/libXtst.so.6.ORG
ln –s /usr/X11R6/lib/libXtst.so.6 /usr/lib/libXtst.so.6

DISPLAY not set. Please set the DISPLAY and try again.
Depending on the Unix Shell, you can use one of the following commands as examples to set the DISPLAY environment variable:
- For csh: % setenv DISPLAY 192.168.1.128:0.0
- For sh, ksh and bash: $ DISPLAY=192.168.1.128:0.0; export DISPLAY
Use the following command to see what shell is being used:
echo $SHELL
Use the following command to view the current DISPLAY environment variable setting:
echo $DISPLAY
- Make sure that client users are authorized to connect to the X Server.
To enable client users to access the X Server, open an xterm, dtterm or xconsole as the user that started the session and type the following command:
% xhost +
To test that the DISPLAY environment variable is set correctly, run a X11 based program that comes with the native operating system such as 'xclock':
% <full path to xclock.. see below>
If you are not able to run xclock successfully, please refer to your PC-X Server or OS vendor for further assistance.
Typical path for xclock: /usr/X11R6/bin/xclock
[oracle@staging database]$ echo $SHELL
/bin/bash

ssh -X oracle@DB_Server
& the first & only command after logging onto the DB Server should be as below
xclock
If/when xclock fails, then OUI will fail. -

Oracle 11g RAC on CentOS 5.2 - Node isnt working after hardware failure
Hi,
We have a 2-node Oracle RAC 11g running on identical nodes with Centos 5.2 as operating system.
Due to a drive failure and a reboot yesterday, the ASM disk, which is onnected via iSCSI, changed from sdd to sdc in name - (the faulty raid drive was removed, thus the change).
The oracle services didnt start, which appeard perfectly logical at the time, given that the ASM disk suddenly wasnt where it was supposed to be, but even today after a replacement disk was inserted, the RAID rebuilt + with the ASM disk back to its original naming in /dev/; the node doesnt seem to work properly. Some of the oracle services are running, but there seems to be a problem with the listener, which might also explain why the node does not set it's virtual ip after starting up.
Luckily, the other one is unaffected and is working perfectly fine..
I'm far from having a clue about oracle, it was sheer luck (that, and the very usable documentation by oracle) that i managed to get that cluster running in the first place... I know my way around linux, so if it's a operating system related problem i'll be able to fix it, but i cant figure out what the problem with oracle is.
The listener doesnt seem to be running

Edited by: user9134821 on 08.06.2010 02:39Hi,
As usual, as soon as i post a problem in some board, i find the solution myself.
Although this way isnt really "linuxy", deleting the listener with the netCA tool and adding a new one solved it.

Installing Oracle Database 11.2.0.3 on Centos 6.4 in AWS
We have been installing and configuring oracle database 11.2.0.3 with OIAM 11gR1 for a few years with great success.
RHEL 5.7
WLS 10.3.6
OracleDB 11.2.0.3
OIAM 11gR1
OHS 11.1.1.6
We have recently decided to move our VMs to Amazon's EC2 environment using CentOS 6.4. The OS our client currently has us using is a hardened version of RHEL5.7. We have installed on CentOS in the past but not in 6.4. All the prereqs are setup but we cannot seem to get the database to configure completely. Running in silent or interactive mode makes no difference.
When running in silent mode we received the following:
./runInstaller -silent -ignoreSysPreReqs -responseFile db_install_w_database.rsp

2 things come to mind with the netca log:
1) We are NOT using HA... so it would seem we could ignore that.
2) Port 1521 is NOT in use. I ran netstat -anpl | grep 1521 in a 5 second delay loop while running the installation and it never appeared.
Does anyone know if there is something different with Centos6.4 or AWS installations that would cause this? Also, the log says that the installation went fine and the issues were with configuration. The spfile does not exist and when root.sh is run after the install, the oratab has no entry ($ORACLE_SID:$ORACLE_HOME:<N|Y> does not exist).
Ideas?Found the issue in the http://stackoverflow.com forums. We had searched them before but did not search on the correct error. I searched on "The information provided for this listener is currently in use by other software on this computer." and found a forum thread that we explained our issue.
We are using AWS as our server provider. AWS has 2 IPs it uses. The Public one which we use to putty into and access the server and the Private one that is on eth0. Evidently, the private IP needs to be in the /etc/hosts file not the public IP.
The database installed and is running. -
