Oracle 11g standard vs enterprise

hi,
Is there a way I can compare the features between 11g standard vs enterprise version. Currently we have an enterprise version installed . But we are thinking to downgrade it to standard edition due to the licensing cost.
Thanks

The whole idea is to see , apart from the schema owner , who else including dba or users with dba privileges are issuing select statements against the salary and other sensitive data. Any thoughts about that , in standard edition ?Oracle exposes no triggers at the SELECT level to which we can attach such an audit function.
So, the only option you have is to replace auditing with prevention.
At least with ordinary users, this can be done quite easily with VIEWs. Have two views on your sensitive tables, one which excludes the columns you're worried about and one which includes them. Grant privileges on each view accordingly. This may necessitate some rewriting of your application. A variation on this approach would be to have one view, which programmatically obfuscates the values in the sensitive columns depending on a value stored in a user-defined CONTEXT.
Of course, this won't keep out the privileged users. Disable CREATE SESSION for the schema owner: nobody should be using that account in production.
But as for your DBAs ... You'll just have to take some of the money you save from the Enterprise Edition licenses and pay them more, to keep them honest. Let's face it, as you're springing for Audit Vault right now, your DBAs can hack the audit trail anyway, and you'll never know.

  • What is the diffrences between Oracle 11g standard & enterprise edition

    Hi,
Can anybody please tell the diffrences between Oracle 11g standard & enterprise edition in detail.
    Thanks in advance,
    Anindya

    Oracle Enterprise Edition:
Enterprise Edition is the full (top of the range) version or the Oracle Database Server. Options like RAC, Partitioning, Spatial, etc. can be purchased separately to enhance the functionality of the database.
    Oracle Standard Edition:
Standard Edition is designed for smaller businesses and enterprises. It offers a subset of the features/ functionality implemented in Enterprise Edition. Database options like Data Guard, Partitioning, Spatial, etc. is not available with Standard Edition (from 10g one can use RAC with Standard Edition). Standard Edition can only be licensed on servers with a maximum capacity of four processors.
    Oracle Standard Edition One:
Standard Edition One is a low cost, entry-level version of the Oracle Standard Edition database server. Standard Edition One can only be licensed on small servers with a maximum capacity of two processors.
    Oracle Personal Edition:
Personal Oracle is a single user version of the database server. It is mostly the same as Enterprise Edition, but doesn't support advanced options like RAC, Streams, XMLDB, etc.
    Oracle Lite:
Oracle Light is a database engine that can be used on mobile platforms like cell phones and PDA's.
    Oracle XE:
Express Edition (XE) is a free, downloadable version of the Oracle database server. Oracle XE can only be used on single processor machines. It can only manage up to 4 GB of data and 1 GB of memory. ISVs can embed XE in 3rd party products and redistribute it freely.

  • Running GoldenGate against Oracle 11g Standard Edition?

We're looking to run Oracle GoldenGate against an Oracle 11g Standard edition database to another Oracle 11g DB also on Standard. I've been reading though the documents and they talk of Oracle to Oracle using XStreams which is part of Streams. But it's my understanding that Streams is only available on Enterprise.
So is it possible to run GoldenGate on Oracle DB Standard Edition?

AFAIK, Golden Gate has no requirement on Oracle edition to be used, but could have licence cost differences.
It works on Oracle from version 8i to the latest one, not only on Oracle database, and not only between same Oracle version and same OS, and not only between two Oracle db .

  • Oracle 11g Developer or Enterprise Edition?

    Hi Guys,
Please help me on this one, its not an issue but I wanted to know which one supports for my small team.
We are 3 developers and we are going to develope one project in C#.NET and Oracle 11g. Currently the project database in Oracle 11g and pascal, just we are going to migrate the interfaces into C#.net and it uses oracle 11g database. We are not going to do any changes in Oracle database.
    So my question's are
    1) which version is enough my developement of this project either Oracle 11g developer or Enterprise Edition?
    2) Where can i get in cheap?
    Thanks,

    1) There is no developer edition in Oracle. If you are 3 developers and will be developing on your own databases, you can buy 3 personal editions(same as enterprise edition) OR you can buy an user based enterprise edition for test environment. I believe minimum you need is 10 user based licenses. Also, if you think that you are not using any enterprise features, you can always go for user based standard edition which will be much cheaper as compare to enterprise.
    2) You can find some Oracle partners who sells the licenses.  Sometime they give you a good discount. I personally do not think Oracle will give you enough discount for these small number of licenses.

  • Oracle 11g Standard Edition + Locator Java API

We have Oracle 11g Standard which includes the Oracle Locator package, but not the Oracle Spatial.
I would like to use the Oracle® Spatial Java API in my java code, but am unsure of the licensing implications of this.
I require some form of java api in order to access the geomettry objects stored in the database. Oracle do not allow the download of the java files seperately. I was unable to find any reference to a 'Oracle Locator Java API'
Could someone let me know what exists in terms of Java API's, what i am entitled to use under the current licensing rules, and where I can download the necessary source/jar files?

Thanks for letting me know the location of the jar files, that will at least help me get things going.
I am still concerned about licensing issues, as your reply appears to contradict itself:
"There is no licensing issues if you just want to use Oracle Spatial Java API(sdoapi.jar) with your spatial data in the Oracle 11g Standard DB."
    and
"You cannot use some oracle spatial features (PL/SQL packages and their java APIs) in the standard edition."
I could use some clarification on this. I'm currently assuming that you mean I can legitimately use the spatial java API with any features I have available within the 11g Standard DB (i.e Oracle Locator subset of the Oracle Spatial package), but that I can't take that for granted, especially considering how militant Oracle are being over licensing and patents these days.

  • Oracle 9i Enterprise to Oracle 11g Standard

    Hello,
Hey guys, I just want to ask. Right now we're currently planning to upgrade our oracle database from 9i Enterprise to 11g Standard. I just want to know what the critical differences between the two are. This is so we can asses how much impact it will have on our current applications using the current 9i database. The original plan was to upgrade it to 11g Enterprise but later on they were suggesting that why not 11g standard instead? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hi Floyd,
Enterprise edition has some extra feature like partitioning , advanced security.
Also The only way to properly convert from an Enterprise Edition back to a Standard Edition is through an Export/Import operation. This way you will get rid of all Enterprise Edition specific Data Dictionary objects, as the SYS schema objects are not exported. The Standard Edition EXP utility is
preferred to be used to export the data.

  • Cloud Control 12c monitoring Oracle 11g Standard Edition alert.log

    Hi guys.
I just installed Cloud Control 12c3 and added my cluster database, I have readed many papers, tech docs and tech discuss and now i have a huge confussion about packs, licensing and other fruits. Please help...
I have four Oracle 11g databases (differents hosts) Standard Edition, and i want monitoring and notificate alert.log errors. For example, if alert.log says "ORA-01438, blablabla" i want a email notification.
I read about packs, and says that "diagnostic pack" is needed for alert.log monitoring in Cloud Control 12c. But my version database is Standard Edition without packs, so I CAN'T MONITORING ALERT LOG!!!.
    Question:
Do I really need Diagnostic Pack for monitoring alert.log with Cloud Control?
If Diagnostinc Pack is not necessary, how can i monitoring alert.log?
    Thanks

I do not think you require any pack for alert.log content monitoring but you might need to check with Oracle rep. I am saying so because if you go to the "Alert log content" page and click on management pack for this page, Grid will display a message that this page does not require any pack.
Go to the Alert log content by "oracle database -> logs -> alert log contents"
    then
go to SETUP -> management packs -> packs for this page
You will see the message will be displayed " this pages does not require any pack"
Can you also provide the doc where it says that this pae needs diagnostic pack?

  • Slow updations (Oracle 11g 64 bit enterprise edition on Linux RHEL)

I have created Following table for profiling updates per second in Oracle Database
    Test(RecordId number,Desciption varchar2(2000) //Btree Index on record id only
    Table has 10000 records only.
I did updation for every record in loop by follwing query(Stored procedure executed on same server where database exists no network is coming in picture)
update Test set description = description + 'something' where Recordid = i (loop counter)//existing description has 1000 characters
I am wondering that updation of only 10000 records was taking 100 Seconds.
    I was expecting atlease 1000 records/second but it is 100 record/second
Can anyone help to correct me and tell how can we improve database updations?
    Processor Dual proc dual core
    Raid with reading speed 2.5Gbps
    OS : Linux RHEL
    Database:Oracle enterprise edition 64 bit.
    sga_max_size = 1.5 GB
Any help will be highly appreciated.

You are running a loop but Oracle will give you read consistency.
Oracle is probably cloning some of the datablocks as it re-reads them because
it finds that the block has been previously updated.
That sort of a loop is absolutely the wrong way to test Oracle.

    hello
With 10Express we have this web interface

With the web interface I can easily check/uncheck rights...
What about 11g standard or enterprise - they don't have a web interface I presume?
I need to check (then grant) if a user "dev" has permission to create/drop/execute immediate table/sequence/stored procedure/function/types/packages

Is this version for Express only, or good for 11g Standard+Enterprise as well?

I am trying to digg up information on version db it supports - looking at wiki not sure why it's saying from 9i and on APEX is preinstalled? I searched "Start menu" didn't find it. I checked "Oracle Universal Installer", and confirmed that yes I don't yet have APEX installed.
+"Oracle Application Express can be installed in an Oracle 9.2 or higher database, and starting from Oracle 11g it will be preinstalled along with the database."+

And I checked 11g doc, don't see APEX version requirements...

Primary database - 2 -Node RAC using ASM storage (All datafiles, redologs, controfile and archive logs)
Need to setup a single instance standby database manually and than using scripts to transfer the archive logs from primary server to standby server to do recovery time to time.

Well if the archive logs are stored in ASM on the primary nodes, you almost definitely want to be using RMAN to access them. Then to transfer between primary and standby there are many options, this is essentially the step that Data Guard takes care of - so if you (and I) are running Standard Edition, this is the part to "worry" about.
I'm not really sure what you mean by this:
As in standard edition the archive destination will be on ASMI don't think the Edition of Oracle (Standard or Enterprise) dictates where and how you store your archive logs, but it's possible I've misunderstood what you mean...SE dictates that database storage for RAC will be ASM, including archive log files. Anything else is not officially supported. I haven't tested but it may be that you can use LOG_ARCHIVE_DUPLEX_DEST to specify a local filesystem for archive log files as well.
If that doesn't work you'll have to script rman "backup as copy" jobs regularly and then transport the results of that.

By the way, it seems Robert has been pretty helpful, it's polite to give him some points dude. And since this is your thread, not mine, give him a "helpful" from me too :p
    El DBA
Incidentally if you are forced down the RMAN backup as copy route then this will likely throw your current backup retention strategy somewhat, you'll need to think carefully about when an archivelog can be deleted following backup, how many times it might be backed up and so on. I do understand, and have argued for, the use of SE RAC. I also understand and have argued for and implemented manually managed standby a number of times. However by the time your primary database is a RAC instance and you need a standby for DR etc then you really have to look very seriously at whether Standard Edition is still the right investment or not. You will be spending a lot of DBA time managing and troubleshooting this, and you will find that it is less reliable than the off the shelf solution. I suspect that you are very close to the point where an EE installation becomes a worthwhile investment here.

  • Procedure for creating logical standyby database for oracle 11g?

    Hi all,
can anybody provide me docs /procedure for creating logical standby databse for oracle 11g standard edition.
    Aravind

    Aravind,
    1. The Oracle Standard Edition does not have standby mechanism, you should do it manually or go for Enterprise Edition.
    2. It's rather a question for General Database Discussions instead of Peoplesoft.
Any further question regarding that point, please post out there.

It is possible to install Oracle RAC in W2003 Standard ?
    I need obligatory W2003 Enterprise?
The cluster of the 2 nodes is made by OS or by Oracle Clusterware?
    Thanks in advance.

You can install on Windows 2003 Standard, it works with this OS. On the other hand the cluster is configured by the oracle clusterware. You need to make absolutely sure you are able to write from both nodes to the shared storage. Specific details on the regedit parameters you have to configure and specific OS issues are detailed at the above reference Werner posted.
