Oracle 7 - Maximum SQL statement length

http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B10501_01/server.920/a96536/ch44.htm#288033
Like above, maximum SQL Statement Length is clearly defined on the "Reference" document of Oracle 8, 9, and 10.
But I could not find it for Oracle 7.
Can someone help me?

This info is available in the Oracle 7 Server Reference. It can be found via http://otn.oracle.com/documentation. Look at the "Previously Released Oracle Documentation" to access it. It's a pdf. Here's a direct link: http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/pdf/A32589_1.pdf. The details can be found in chapter 5.
It comes down to this: 64k.

  • From 10g, "SQL Statement Length" description disappeared....

    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14117_01/server.101/b10755/limits003.htm#sthref3594
From 10g, on the above 'Logical Database Limits' section of 'Reference' document, the description for 'SQL Statement Length' limitation (64K) has been dropped.
Is this mean there is NO limitation on 10g or just mistake?

    Hi Tadaaki,
Apologies for the delay in responding to you.
Unfortunately I cannot answer this question. Although my group maintains the Documentation pages on OTN, we are not part of OTN, nor do we have input with regard to the content of documentation. We merely provide links to the documentation at: http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/index.html

  • Maximum SQL statement on ODBC 8176 or higher ?

    Hello.
I am developing a DB reporting program using ODBC.
My customer complained that the program shut down when query the SQL statement.
But, my computer didn't shut down when I queried the same SQL statement.
The difference is my customer used 8177 ODBC driver, but my computer installed 8176 driver, so I changed ODBC driver 8176 to 8177 and the problem appeared too.
I debugged and I found that the program shut down at SQLPrepare API.
The size of the SQL statement is 8238 bytes.
I tested and I found that the program shut down when the SQL statement size was around 5900bytes or larger.
I think, this is the Oracle ODBC drivers bug, does anybody meet the same problem?
I noticed to my customer this situation and he tried to downgrade ODBC driver 8177 to 8176 but he failed.
How can I solve this problem? I tried that the same SQL statement with OCI but it was no problem.

I've never encountered a situation where the ODBC driver improperly handled a statement that the Oracle database could, and I've seen cases where the ODBC driver was given statements longer than Oracle's maximum.
My recollection is that Oracle itself doesn't support SQL statements longer than 8k (though I think it depends on the version of the database-- it may have been 4k in the past). If you want to generate SQL statements this long (and I'm not sure you do-- perhaps there are views, etc that you need to create to simplify your queries) you really ought to by using the DBMS_SQL package. You populate a table with 256 byte chunks of data and then call this package, so you can have infinitely long SQL statements.

  • SQL statement length downgrades performance

    Hi all!!!
I wonder if someone have noticed this or knows an answer on it. When the length of an SQL sentence is greater than 2000 bytes (+ or -) the time to process grows dramatically. See examples and environment below.
No matter how complex the query is, the time to execute the 'executeQuery' can be x10 times slower than small queries. There is no need to send complicate queries. I have even test it using a simple 'SELECT SYSDATE FROM DUAL'. I'm unable to understand why the time to process this query can vary from 10ms to 130ms just by appending blank spaces into the query (i.e.: 'SELECT SYSDATE FROM DUAL ')
    Examples:
The times shown are taken using 'System.currentTimeMillis()' just before and after the call to 'executeQuery()' or 'execute(sql):
'SELECT SYSDATE FROM DUAL' -> takes from 0ms to 30ms
    'SELECT SYSDATE FROM DUAL' + 1000_blank_spaces (' ') -> takes from 0ms to 30ms (the same)
    'SELECT SYSDATE FROM DUAL' + 2000_blank_spaces (' ') -> takes from 100ms to 130ms
I have made a loop increasing spaces 1 by 1 up to 2500. I found that the performance is always on the range 0-30ms up to a total length of 1970 characters. After that, all the queries takes 100-130ms.
I also tested with very complex queries (implying several tables and indexes) like 'SELECT field_1, field_2 FROM table_1, table_2 WHERE very_complex_condition'. This may take 10-30ms. However, if something is added to that query (i.e a 'field_3' on the SELECT, blank spaces, a new 'AND', etc...) that makes the string be larger than 1970 characters, the query takes then 100-130ms.
The same results are get using Statements or PreparedStatements.
I end up that when the SQL String is close to 2Kb the JDBC Thin Driver spends 100ms doing something unknown. This seems to be an issue on the Thin driver, since the same tests using OCI give homogeneous time (no mater the length) but they are slower than the Thin driver (70-80ms for the same 'SELECT SYSDATE FROM DUAL'). It does not seems to be related with the network because some of the tests used the same machine (server and client).
Does anyone have an explanation about this?. All suggestions are welcome.
    Here comes the technical info:
    SERVER
    - Oracle 8.1.6 on Solaris 8 sparc 64 bits (Sun ultra-10).
    CLIENTs
    - Windows NT 4 / Solaris 8 (tha same box as the server)
    - JDK 130 / JDK 131
    - JDBC 8.1.6 / JDBC 8.1.7 (downloaded from Oracle site)
    Best regards
    Roberto.

    More on this.
After increasing the length of the SQL statement up to 3600 bytes and more, the execution time goes back to 10-30ms. So performance is only bad in the range 2Kb-3.5Kb
I'm really confused about this issue.

  • Oracle Parsing SQL Statement in ANSI or Oracle Format

I have problem with a Query ..It seems to be Oracle Bugs .
When I enter below simple Query (in Oracle Join format ), It works properly
    select * from (
    select dept.*,emp.ename from dept,emp
    where dept.deptno=emp.deptno(+)
    where deptno in
    select deptno a from
select deptno, dname from dept where deptno=10
    UNION ALL
select deptno, dname from dept where deptno=20
But When I changed it and use it in ANSI Format ,it is not parsed and shows me ORA-00920: invalid relational operator error ......
Below shows the changes that I have made to convert it to ANSI Format.
    select * from (
    select dept.*,emp.ename from dept
left outer join emp on (emp.deptno=dept.deptno)
    where (deptno) in
    select deptno a from
select deptno, dname from dept where deptno=10
    UNION ALL
select deptno, dname from dept where deptno=20
It seems to be Oracle bugs.I appreciate everybody to help me.
( Comments : I use Oracle 9i R2 on Windows and I can not change the SQL statement
    because it is created dynamically)
    Best regards

This sort of technical question needs to be addressed to one of the technical forums. Products | Database | SQL and PL/SQL would seem to be appropriate here.

  • Adding a field to an sql statement in Oracle Reports error ORA-00933

We have been requested to add a field that already exists in the table referred to by the sql statement in Oracle Reports Builder. The report was set up by a consultant about 3 yrs ago and we don't really have much skill in this area. What is happening when I try to modify the SQL statement, either adding a field or deleting a field to the SELECT statement, causes an error message preventing the statement from being saved. The only way out of the error message is to click Cancel. The error message is
    ORA-00933:SQL command not properly ended
    ORDER BY Program ==> NAME
Even adding or deleting a space anywhere in the SQL statement causes the error (not adding any new fields). A coworker found that if we comment out the ORDER BY, the statement will accept the new field in the SELECT section, however then we lose the order by functionality. I would like to add one additional field before the FROM. Not sure if any additional data are needed. Thank you.

    Hi Denis,
I tried your suggestion. The good thing is that adding the comma allowed me to be able to add a.campus to the select statement, unfortunately, another error message happened.
    ORA-00936: missing expression SELECT p . person_uid PIDM_KEY ,

CASE WHEN : P_group_by = 'PROGRAM THEN a I started over and tried only putting in the comma and get the same message even though I didn't add campus. After that, removed the comma which led to the ORA-00933 error message. So once again, I had to close the file without saving, in order for the report to run at all.

  • Oracle Date in SQL Statement.

    Hello,
We are having performance issues with some reports using conditions on date fields in the Record Selection Formula. Our application does not use the time portion of the date fields very often. When Crystal Reports builds the SQL statement to Oracle it uses a range condition to include all the possible time values. This practice makes a big difference compared to a direct condition
         Example:   SELECT "TABLE_A"."ID"
                           FROM   "TABLE_A"
                           WHERE  ("TABLE_A"."DT">= TO_DATE('2011-03-31 00:00:00','YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS') AND
                                          "TABLE_A"."DT"< TO_DATE('2011-04-01 00:00:00','YYYY-MM-DD HH24:MI:SS'))
Is there a way to tell Crystal not to perform range validation on dates?
We would like to have a SQL Statment that looks like:
                           SELECT "TABLE_A"."ID"
                           FROM   "TABLE_A"
                           WHERE  ("TABLE_A"."DT" = TO_DATE('2011-03-31'))
We are on Oracle 11 with Crystal Report for VS2010 Sp1.
    Thank you.
    Charles

Have a look at the kbase below. I think this is a throwback to the fact that we can't handle the milliseconds in the DateTime. So, in order to ensure we get the correct data we search on a range plus one second of what you asked for.

Thanks.Any Oracle client connected to the Oracle database can access Sybase data through the <font style="background-color: #FFFFCC">Database Gateway for Sybase</font> (it requires an additional license) or the <font style="background-color: #FFFFCC">Database gateway for ODBC</font> (it's free).
The Oracle client and the Oracle database can reside on different machines. The gateway accepts connections only from the Oracle database.
A connection to the gateway is established through a database link when it is first used in an Oracle session. In this context, a connection refers to the connection between the Oracle database and the gateway. The connection remains established until the Oracle session ends. Another session or user can access the same database link and get a distinct connection to the gateway and Sybase database.
Database links are active for the duration of a gateway session. If you want to close a database link during a session, you can do so with the ALTER SESSION statement.
To access the Sybase server, you must create a <font style="background-color: #FFFFCC">database link</font>. A public database link is the most common of database links.

                and trkorr ne p_trkorr.
We think the problem is the number of entries in the range table lv_sel_copy so that the maximum size of the SQL statement is reached.
But how likely is the maximum size ?
Depends the size on the data base ? We are using MaxDB 7.6, MaxDB 7.7.
How can we determine the maximum size so that we can calculate the nubmer of entries in the range tabel.
Any other idea or solution ?
    Thanks
    Arnfried

    Hi,
You are getting this dump because maybe your entries are huge and it might have exceeded the buffer space of the table. You have to ask your basis team to increase the size of the buffer space.
    or,
You can segregate the range values into smaller ranges and fetch from the database accordingly..
You can see the size of the table space in DB02.

  • The maximum size of an SQL statement has been exceeded.

In ST22, abap dump shows that one of the possible reason was "The maximum size of an SQL statement has been exceeded."
How can I know what's the maximum size and how to compute that size had been reached?
Is this shown anywhere in the log?

    1. decalre temp_key as a table.
    2. use this package size option ....this gets the data in bite-sized chunks
    SELECT MATKL MATNR MEINS
INTO corresponding fields of table TEMP_KEY package size 1000
    FROM MARA
    WHERE MATNR IN SO_MATNR.
    loop at temp_key.
    MOVE-CORRESPONDING TEMP_KEY TO ITAB_KEY1.
    IF WS_PCHR SPACE.
    CLEAR ITAB_CHAR.
    CLEAR ITAB_KEY1-CHARACTER. REFRESH ITAB_KEY1-CHARACTER.
    PERFORM GET_CHAR TABLES ITAB_CHAR ITAB_KEY1-CHARACTER
    USING ITAB_KEY1-MATNR.
    ENDIF.
    APPEND ITAB_KEY1. CLEAR ITAB_KEY1.
    endloop.
    ENDSELECT.
