Oracle 8.1.7 on Debian 3.0 install fix
I was getting segfaults rebuildling the client shared library and after
copious use of programming wizardy (i.e., "echo got here...") in the $ORACLE_HOME/bin/genclntsh script I found out that the problem was
the line:
PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:$PATH export PATH
After moving the "export PATH" command to a separate line, no more seg faults. I'm not sure if this was particular to the version of bash that comes iwth Debian 3.0 or not, but who knows..Now I'm off to try actaully creating the database.
the line:
PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:$PATH export PATH
After moving the "export PATH" command to a separate line, this is one of some typo that comes with docu. You slolved it correctly.

Can't install Oracle 8.1.7 on Debian 3.0 (woody)
Hello,
I'm trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 on Debian 3.0 (kernel 2.4.19 and glibc 2.2.5) but the runInstaller program does not start.
It displays the msg "Initializing Java Virtual Machine from ../stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.1.8/1/DataFiles/Expanded/linux/bin/jre. Please wait..." and nothing more happens.
I found lots of posts on this forum regarding installing Oracle, but none of the workarounds for Debian seems to work.
I'm using Blackdown's JDK 1.1.8, but even with it the runInstaller does not start (it's installed in /usr/local/java, as Oracle expects).
I tried "unset LANG", but it didn't work. Also tried "export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5", nothing either.
It's not possible to use Debian 2.2, I must install Oracle 8.1.7 on Debian 3.0. Also I successfully installed Oracle 9.0.1 on the same machine I'm trying to instal Oracle 8.1.7.
Has anyone successfully installed Oracle 8.1.7 on Debian 3.0? What should I do install it?

Oracle 8.1.7 on Debian 2.2 (potato)
Hello (again),
I'm trying to install Oracle 8.1.7 on Debian 2.2r2 (kernel 2.2.19 and glibc 2.1.3) but runInstaller dies with SIGSEGV. On the same machine I have already successfully installed Oracle 8.1.6.
I installed Blackdown JDK 1.1.8 but it does not seems to make any diference. No matter what JDK I install and put in my PATH the runInstaller dies with SIGSEGV.
Also tried to "unset LANG", no goog either. LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5, also does not work.
Anyone knows how I can install Oracle 8.1.7 on Debian 2.2r2?

Check "Problem: Oracle Database 10g Release 2 can only be installed in new
Hi All
Installing 10g software on AIX Box in /oracle/oraHome2,where oracle9i is already installed in /oracle/oraHome1 and oracle inventory is in /oracle/inventory
In product specific prerequisite screen I am getting the
check:Oracle Home incompatibilties is failed I am getting the error
Check complete. The overall result of this check is: Passed
=======================================================================
Checking for Oracle Home incompatibilities ....
Actual Result: Oracle9i Database 9.2.0.1.0
Check complete. The overall result of this check is: Failed <<<<
Problem: Oracle Database 10g Release 2 can only be installed in a new Oracle Home
Recommendation: Choose a new Oracle Home for installing this product
though I am installing it in different oracle homes why i am getting this error?
Is it because 10g installation is picking the same oracle inventory /oracle/inventory
do i need to make different oracle inventory for different oracle homes???????plz confirm..is thats the reason i am getting this error??????
Thanks inadvance
GaganI figure out you are trying to install 10gR2 on top of an existing 9iR2 Oracle Home. This is corrected at the Path definition window. Most probably you just click on the <Next> and by default the 9iR2 Oracle Home was selected. You must define a new oracle home for the 10gR2 install.

Oracle SOA Suite (10.1.3.3.0) install as Windows service
Hi Guys,
This is a repost. Since the original thread was kinda hijacked, I think maybe I should start a new thread.
I was installing Oracle SOA Suite (10.1.3.3.0) on Windows Server 2003.
Original issue: by default installation, 10gAS cannot run as windows service.
Following MetaLink Note, I manually created OreacleMyHomeProcessManager service, after start this service, seems everything works fine now.
However, in original MetaLink Note it asked to create two services, another one is OracleMyHomeASControl - but the nmesrvc.exe file cannot be found anywhere in my installation, so I did not create it.
My questions are:
1. Do I really need to create the 2nd service?
2. Why the 10gAS works fine without this 2nd service?
3. Without 2nd service, any potential problems it may cause?
Thanks a lot in advance for reply!

nullDon't worry, you are good to go. I just posted my comments on the earlier thread:

Does Oracle XE 10g or 11g have supported patches/bug fixes
Does Oracle XE 10g or 11g have supported patches/bug fixes?
XE isn't patch-able, unfortunately- eg. in the section ...Major Features Not Included at http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17781_01/license.112/e18068/toc.htm#XELIC116 a "patch set" is one of the "not included" items
One could install one of the full release editions, get it patched, and upgrade an XE instance with the patch-able edition, but access to patches requires a support agreement. -
Tar: Unexpected EOF in archive for Oracle-E-Business-Suite-12.2.3-VISION-INSTALL
Hi All,
System = Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (64 bit)
I downloaded Oracle EBS Vision instance from Oracle eDelivery.
File Name = Oracle-E-Business-Suite-12.2.3-VISION-INSTALL.ova.00
File Type = Archive
There are 14 others files like the same and they have been successfully extracted. This is the first file out of the 15 total files.
I am unable to extract the above file.
Steps Performed
1. Initially, I tried to extract directly. I got the error
Could not open "Oracle-E-Business-Suite-12.2.3-VISION-INSTALL.ova.00"
Archive Type not supported
2. Then I renamed the file to "Oracle-E-Business-Suite-12.2.3-VISION-INSTALL.ova.00.tar" and tried to do the following
$ tar xvf Oracle-E-Business-Suite-12.2.3-VISION-INSTALL.ova.00.tar
Oracle-E-Business-Suite-12.2.3-VISION-INSTALL.ovf
Oracle-E-Business-Suite-12.2.3-VISION-INSTALL-disk1.vmdk
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
Now the above two downloaded files Oracle-E-Business-Suite-12.2.3-VISION-INSTALL.ovf and Oracle-E-Business-Suite-12.2.3-VISION-INSTALL-disk1.vmdk are of unknown file type.
Ideally I should have got a file = Oracle-E-Business-Suite-12.2.3-VISION-INSTALL.ova.00 (File Type = Program) like all other 14 files and as per the installation steps that I see in the videos for the installation.
Can anyone help me on this?
Thanks,
NiladriSystem = Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (64 bit)

Oracle 8.1.7 on Debian 2.1
Hi everybody,
I'm trying to install ORA8i(8.1.7) on my Debian Linux 2.1 with
kernel 2.4.12 (realy fresh !) and libc 2.2.4 (due to my XFree86
4.1) and I'm having lot of problems....
I had to update libs in my system due to new version of Gnome
and Xfree ..
Oracle 8.1.7.01 was compile using libc6 2.1.3 and Oracle
recomends apply a glibc_2.1.3_stub to fix problems related to
compiled programs linking....
But, I'm having problems while the linking phase. Even if I
apply that "patch", OUI cannot run some makefiles and cannot
link some bin and libs... I've tried to run manually, change
those make files (precomp, ins_*.mk), etc, but I got no sucess...
I really apreciate any help from somebody who have had a similar
problem during the linking phase of the install process to
Oracle 8.1.7 ...
Thanks in advance

[Debian] Oracle 10g Express - init.d start/stop script problem + fix
I've experienced a problem with the init.d script "oracle xe" which is used to start/stop/reload the 10g server and comes with the debian package from oss.oracle.com.
I noticed that after installing Oracle 10g in the "Debian" way (via .deb package and an apt-source oss.oracle.com), the start and stop method of the script doesn't do anything.
It's checking for the value of the "ORACLE_DBENABLED" variable, which is on my installation set to "false", because I answered during installation false to the question "do you want to start Oracle 10g at system boot?".
In my opinion that's wrong. I should always be able to start/stop the Oracle server trough the init.d script regardless of your choice starting Oracle at boot or not.
I commented out row 604 and 621 in the file "/etc/init.d/oracle-xe" :
case "$1" in

if test -f "$CONFIGURATION"
then
if test "$ORACLE_DBENABLED" != "true"

Oracle 9i RBDS on GNU/Debian
Alright people
I am planning on installing Oracle 9i on GNU/Debian.
Just wondering if there is anything that I need to do in order to have a successful install.
For example: I know there are some issue related to using; mainly related to the licenses of Java. Which distribution of Java is known to work with GNU/Debian and Oracle 9i, for example Sun's distribution of Java, or the Blackdown port of Java.
Any information provided will be received most gratefully.
Thanks in advance
HarishSorry to butt in like this.
But I'd be more interested in how you actually got the installer to run.
No matter what I do it seg faults after initializing the jvm.
I've installed both a jre and jdk in /usr/local/jre and /usr/local/java respectively, which made no difference.
Following other peoples problems I've set all the env variables correctly, and unset some.
I'm running debian woody, with no xserver at all, I'm using a remote X desktop (KDE2, mandrake 8.1)
Thanks -

Do I need to modify the makefile or is it a glibc problem?

Lars KristensenHi,
Oracle required gcc295 for Linux Oracle to link correctly. We put the gcc295 at /opt/gcc295 and the put it first in the path for the Oracle userid. This work very well. Also there was a note the said to look in the files (gen/make files) and change any hard coded reference to a specific gcc location to just gcc. I looked and did not find any hard coded specific gcc. Hope this helps -
DBPrism on Debian - How to Install
Hi,
We are trying to setup a server running debian to act as a webserver.
It has oracle xe as the database. We are wanting to use dbprism as the pl/sql gateway.
Are there any install instructions that anyone could share with us? Apache 2 is installed. Are there any other software packages that are required also (jdk? jserv? etc..)?
Thanks heaps

1. GLIC compatability 2.1 is required.
i havent tried yet but i believe this should work, before starting runInstaller
export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.(5 or 14).
run /usr/i386-glibc21-linux/bin/i386-glibc21-linux-env.sh
still if it doesnt try the patch
glibc-2.1.3-stubs.tar
could any one think of an alternative.
please please post the feedback
thanks

I have tried many of the options given previously, but I still can not install it. I have downloaded the compat glibc 2.1.3.2 and copied the files etc, but when I run the "runInstaller" from the command line, all I get is:
"[oracle] /mnt/cdrom=$ Initializing Java Virtual Machine from ../stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.1.8/1/DataFiles/Expanded/linux/bin/jre. Please wait..." It eventually comes back to the command prompt, but no GUI insatller. Any ideas???<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
