Oracle 8i/Developer Home - Help?!

Have been medically laid up for about a year and want to get back to Oracle database learning on Personal Oracle. I am trying to install Oracle 8i PE and Developer 6i (production) on a new computer driven by a 2.0 ghz P4 vice 650mhz P3. My install recall is foggy. I can remember a a copuple of issues from my first install.
1. As I recall, Developer has to be installed FIRST to occupy Default_Home. But I don't remember whether Oracle installs to the SAME home or whether it must have an entirely separate home in another directory. I do seem to recall that Oracle's default installation choice seeks out the Default_Home file wherever situated and wants to install there. So QUESTION 1: Do I install Developer using Oracle\ORAINST\DEFAULT_HOME as the home and THEN install Oracle and let it the same home? A friend told me that his computer has Oracle PE it has one directory for Oracle database 8i (ORANTDB)and one directory for Developer (ORANT) [he had it installed professionally so isn't any help here] but as far as he can tell only ONE home at ORANT\ORAINST\DEFAULT_HOME. He opened the file and it seemed to contain both Developer info and Oracle info.
2. I also don't recall how to establish the connection between Developer 6i and the database, although I do remember some relation to a tnsnames.ora file and the need to do some things there. Reading thru the traffic here, it seems that some say it's an automatic connection and others indicate not. So, QUESTION 2 is: Do I need to manually set up the connection between Developer and the database - and if so how?
Hate to bother but in effect I am back to primer status, so installation help with seemingly silly questions would be appreciated.
Thank you.

1. As I recall, Developer has to be installed FIRST to occupy Default_Home. I do I am not at all familiar with PE, but generally you should always install the dumbest/oldest Oracle product first. I think Dev6i installs in/with 8.0.5 Client software Home. Also 8i onwards each home has separate install directory.
2.
If connecting locally i.e. empty connect string doesn't help. Then you simply add an alias for it in tnsnames.ora (8.0.5 network/admin dir). Open the existing tnsnames, it should have some example entries.

  • Oracle SQL Developer Installation Help (Basics?)

    Hello
So im taking a class (student here, totally new to this) in Oracle SQL right now and trying to download the Oracle SQL Developer tool onto my desktop (v 2.1.1).
Im just starting up Oracle SQL Developer and its asking, or I am looking to create a connection.
I was wondering if anyone had a tutorial for how to make a connection?
I only have Oracle SQL developer installed on my machine right now, nothing else. I dont have a server or anything, and just wanted to run this on my desktop local machine to practice running some SQL.
Is there anything else i need to install?
Is there some basic username and password that would allow me to connect to my local machine?
What values do i need for the hostname, port and SID etc?
Any help for a new student to Oracle would be greatly appreciated.

You'd need a database to connect the SQL Developer client to.
The easiest / quickest if you're a student would be the Express Edition.
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/express-edition/downloads/index.html
Pick your platform and away you go.
Your hostname will then be 127.0.0.1, SID will be XE .... username and password will depend on what you choose when you're installing (you should get prompted for SYS/SYSTEM passwords).

  • Oracle SQL Developer Connection Help

    Hi,
I'm a complete Oracle newbie, so please bear with me. I've been doing research on protein clustering and at my lab the SQL developer has been running queries that I can then do statistics on. I have the query that I need to run, and was told to download Oracle SQL Developer and Oracle Client.
I was also given a username and password, a hostname, a port and a SID. I'm a bit confused, do I still need to install Oracle Client? And if so, I can't quite find what it is on the website? I have SQL Developer installed but when I click connect I get:
"Status : Failure -Test failed: IO Error: The Network Adapter could not establish the connection"
I'm pretty computer literate outside the world of databases so if someone can offer some explanations and guidance, it would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

Thanks! If you have SQL Developer installed & need to connect to some Oracle DB,
then you do NOT need Oracle client.
FWIW - SQL Developer is written in Java & uses JDBC (thin) to connect to the DB
Is the DB Server on a subnet local to your system?

  • Which is a better carrer option,DBA or oracle apps developer, please help?

I am a trainee and have been offered a choice between the oracle DBA and the oracle apps finance developer.
What is the future of a DBA guy ,can he get into the management side in an IT industry or just stick to the tech side all through the life?
Is getting into a managerial side more easier in the DBA or the apps developer side?
Please help ,I am in a real confusion and have to quickly make a decision.

    Mahen,
Before giving an opinion, the most relevant part would be to know that you want to do what, be a manager or be a techie or both? AFIK, in the dba track as well, after few years, a person can become a manager , project/team lead. It all depends on this fact tht you want to be a manager or not. I have got couple of friends, some are managers but some chose to stick with technology only despite that they were offered to become a manager as they didn't like the idea of analyzing the appraisal reports than Statspack reports.
Getting into the manager side would only come(or should come) with a proven record. I am not from Apps background, never did that but I feel that's a more functional side that you have mentioned. If you are a finance guy, having a strong base in finance, you should go for it. I don't think that if you are not having a base in this stream, you should be opting for it. You are still a trainee as per your saying, think about being good in either side of the technology than being the manager. You can always be once you have spend some time with either of the tracks.

  • Urgent Help !!!  Export data into insert format (Oracle Sql developer)

    Hi all,
Please help , when i try to export ms access table which have 400,000 over rows to insert format using oracle sql developer 1.5.5. After the export have done the exported file xxx.sql is empty.
Is it because of too many rows? or what tool or function should i use for exporting table with many rows.
It used to have exported successfully with
    Insert into table( ) values ();
    Insert into table( ) values ();
    Insert into table( ) values ();
    Insert into table( ) values ();
----- when i try to export table with over 10,000 row.
    Regard,
    Tun

Another option is to export your file as Formatted text (space delimited). This will create a fixed format file. You can either create an external table to access the file or use sqlloader to load it. In your control file or access parameters you will specify the positions of the fields you are interested in. Your control file will look something like this:
    OPTIONS (BINDSIZE=50000,ERRORS=50,ROWS=200,READSIZE=65536)
    LOAD DATA
    CHARACTERSET US7ASCII
    INFILE '/home/FIXED_FORMAT.dat' "FIX 58"
    CONCATENATE 1
    INTO TABLE "EMP2"
    APPEND
    REENABLE DISABLED_CONSTRAINTS
    "ID" POSITION(1:2) INTEGER(2) ,
    "REGION" POSITION(3:3) INTEGER EXTERNAL(1) ,
    "DEPT" POSITION(4:6) INTEGER EXTERNAL(3) ,
    "HIRE_DATE" POSITION(7:14) DATE(8) "mmddyyyy" ,
    "SALARY" POSITION(15:19) DECIMAL(9,2) ,
    "NAME" POSITION(20:34) CHAR(15)
SQLDeveloper does not currently provide an option to import fixed format files.

because the message when i test connection always is filed and I'm sure i typing username and password and SID:orcl as i set when install database.port 1158 is what the dbcontrol (Oracle Enterprise Manager) is listening on. OEM is NOT the database. As far as the database is concerned, OEM is "just another client".
Actually, the database doesn't listen for requests on any port. There is another process, the "listener" that listens for requests to connect to the database. Typically, it listens on port 1521. You should have a tnsnames.ora file set up to resolve a connection request to the correct host. You can read more on this at http://edstevensdba.wordpress.com/2011/02/09/sqlnet_overview/

  • Import data using Excel and Oracle SQL Developer - I need some help

    Dear friends,
I'm using Oracle SQL Developer 1.5.1 and I need to import an Excel file into a database table. If I try to import this file in XLS format, fields and headers are correctly being shown and separated, but if I press "Next" button, it simply doesn't do anything - it stays stopped.
I did some search here in this forum and it seems to me that, when you try to import a file via XLS format, SQL Developer has bugs. Is this correct?
If I save the same file in CSV format and try to import the same file, it goes ahead, but SQL Developer is not separating fields and headers correctly. It combines all CSV fields into one - let's say Column0 and fields 1;TEST;01/01/2000 below the same Column0.
Saving the file in CSV format is not a problem, taking a very little time. But I don't know how to make SQL Developer import it correctly. Could somebody please help me? Thanks in advance.
    Best regards,
    Franklin

    Hello K,
yes, you're right. I found the following topic after posting this question here.
Re: After update to 1.5.1, import from Excel fails
I downloaded version 1.5.0 and I'll use it whenever I import data from Excel.

I can add links to favorites but I have no way to go to these
    saved favorites anymore.
How do I get the Favorites TAB/Icon back?
    Thanks

    Hi John,
SQL Developer depends on JDeveloper code for the Help. After closing the Favorites tab I see no way to re-open it in the UI, so I imagine there may be a bug on the JDev side. Fortunately, there is a manual fix:
    In file product-preferences.xml
    In directory C:\Documents and Settings\<userid>\Application Data\SQL Developer\system3.0.04.34\o.sqldeveloper.11.1.2.4.34
use Notepad to look for the lines like:
          <value n="helpDynamicLinksNavigatorLocation" v="3"/>
          <value n="helpFavoritesNavigatorLocation" v="0"/>
Just change the value "0" to "2"Regards,
    Gary

  • Ask for a way to learn Oracle and Developer 2000. HELP PLEASE!!

    Hi,
I want to learn Oracle database and developer 2000. So I need the softwares.I am going to download
    1. Oracle Forms Developer/Server Release 6i for Windows NT
    2. Oracle8i Personal Edition on NT
Before download them, I want to know if they can work together. I am in Australia, do you know where I can get the free softwares, or with lower price.
If you have another way for self-training, please let me know.
    Thanks in advance.
    Sue

They do work together, though the installation process is moderately complicated. You may want to check this web site: http://www.chow1.myweb.nl/
This site has some experiences and procedures that have worked in the past for this combination.
You should also check Amazon.com or your local tech bookstore for books on Developer.

  • Problem installing Oracle Internet Developer Suite 1.0.2.4.1 (Forms & Reports 6i)

    Hi all,
I am unable to install Oracle Internet Developer Suite 1.0.2.4.1 - specifically Forms & Reports 6i, Designer, Discoverer (ALL Products on Quick Install option on Windows 98 system). The installation proceeds to Install screen when the various files start to load ... Then the whole process stops after showing 100% load (sometimes the screen freezes, sometimes I get error message - illegal instruction etc) when the following file is being loaded :
    Extracting ... ewt_swingaccessbridge.jar
    I have another question :
I have Personal Oracle 8i (8.1.7) installed on D:\Oracle\Ora81 already.
During the install process (before I get the above error message) the 8.1.7 RSF-based product install location screen presents itself with the option to create a new Oracle Home and location (The preferred Oracle Home name iDSData and preferred Oracle Home Location D:\ORACLE\iDSData are already entered in the boxes) or Select an existing ORACLE_HOME. My existing ORACLE_HOME is
D:\Oracle\Ora81. What am I supposed to do at this point ? The installation guide is not explicit. Any help with these topics will be greatly appreciated.
I will be greatly obliged to anyone who can assist me with installing Forms & Reports 6i. Many thanks in advance.
    Sincerely,
    Partha Sur

Had the same problem too. It won't install in the same directory as your database. You need to create a new directory on your hard drive and have it installed there. Worked for me.

Edited by: user13373417 on 07-Jul-2010 09:06It appears you don't have a very clear understanding of how the client and the server are configured to communicate with one another.
    ============
    A couple of important points.
First, the listener is a server side only process. It's entire purpose in life is to receive requests for connections to databases and set up those connections. Once the connection is established, the listener is out of the picture. It creates the connection. It doesn't sustain the connection. One listener, running from one oracle home, listening on a single port, will serve multiple database instances of multiple versions running from multiple homes. It is an unnecessary complexity to try to have multiple listeners. That would be like the telephone company building a separate switchboard for each customer.
Second, the tnsnames.ora file is a client side issue. It's purpose is for address resolution - the tns equivalent of the 'hosts' file further down the network stack. The only reason it exists on a host machine is because that machine can also run client processes.
Assume you have the following in your tnsnames.ora:
    larry =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS_LIST =
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = myhost)(PORT = 1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVICE_NAME = curley)
)Now, when you issue a connect, say like this:
$> sqlplus scott/tiger@larrytns will look in your tnsnames.ora for an entry called 'larry'. Next, tns sends a request to (PORT = 1521) on (HOST = myhost) using (PROTOCOL = TCP), asking for a connection to (SERVICE_NAME = curley).
Where is (HOST = myhost) on the network? When the request gets passed from tns to the next layer in the network stack, the name 'myhost' will get resolved to an IP address, either via a local 'hosts' file, via DNS, or possibly other less used mechanisms. You can also hard-code the ip address (HOST = 123.456.789.101) in the tnsnames.ora.
Next, the request arrives at port 1521 on myhost. Hopefully, there is a listener on myhost configured to listen on port 1521, and that listener knows about SERVICE_NAME = curley. If so, you'll be connected.
    What can go wrong?
First, there may not be an entry for 'larry' in your tnsnames. In that case you get "ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified" No need to go looking for a problem on the host, with the listener, etc. If you can't place a telephone call because you don't know the number (can't find your telephone directory (tnsnames.ora) or can't find the party you are looking for listed in it (no entry for larry)) you don't look for problems at the telephone switchboard.
Maybe the entry for larry was found, but myhost couldn't be resolved to an IP address (say there was no entry for myhost in the local hosts file). This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe there was an entry for myserver in the local hosts file, but it specified a bad IP address. This will result in "ORA-12545: Connect failed because target host or object does not exist"
Maybe the IP was good, but there is no listener running: "ORA-12541: TNS:no listener"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, but it is listening on a different port. "ORA-12560: TNS:protocol adapter error"
Maybe the IP was good, there is a listener at myhost, it is listening on the specified port, but doesn't know about SERVICE_NAME = curley. "ORA-12514: TNS:listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor"

    What I did was,
After successful instalaltion of developer suite, I've installed latest JRE from www.java.com and configured formsweb.cfg and default.env file.
I've used IE8 only. I haven't tested on any other browsers.
Do modify these lines to configure formsweb.cfg to change to JRE from Jinitiator (As said by CraigB )

  • Need to develop a help system

I need to develop a help system for a Client-Server Oracle Form Application.
Can any one suggest any good packages to develop Help system?
Does any one tried Oracle Help for Java (OHJ)?
Please let me know your recommendations and opinions, thanks.

    Two methods.
One generate a HTML file and use the Web.Show_Document to display the help file.
Two use shareware like 'Help Workshop' which can be found at www.cnet.com.
    Good Luck
