Oracle 9.2.0.8 Win2000(32bit) upgrade to 11gR2 win2008(64 bit)

Hi,
We are planning to upgrade our databases running on oracle 9.2.0.8 / win2000 (32 bit) to 11gR2 /win2008 .
I have read many documents on metalink that talk about the upgrade methods and the execution.
We are currently in a planning phase and looking to do an impact analysis on the application. Is there any document that may refer to the database / OS changes that may have a direct / indirect impact on the applicaiton.
We have 2 applicatons. one is running on .net 2.0 and the other is written in vb 6.0 and asp.
Some of the doubts that we have are:
will the oracle client 9.2.0.8 running on win2000 communicate with the 11gR2 db on win2008 without any problems
Will the bitversion difference (32bit) app server vs (64 bit) db server be a problem ?
Are there any datatype changes that may require any change to the application?
I referred to the Oracle® Database
Upgrade Guide
11g Release 2 (11.2)
E17222-08
and it says that we can directly upgrade the database to 11gR2 without making any changes to the applicaiton if we do not intend to use any new features of 11gR2.
Any comments?
Regards,
Maddy

    Hi,
can any one provide what is the best method upgrade from oracle 10.2.0.1.0 32bit to 11.2.0.3.0 64bit
    I have 2 option:
    1. upgrade the source version to at list 10.2.0.2.0
and then  upgrade the new 10.2.0.2.0 to 11.2.0.3.0
    2. upgrade the source version to 11.1.x,x on the new 64 bit server
        and then upgrade to 11.2.0.3.0
I prefer not to change the production server.
is there any know issue choosing step 2.
    what is the best option?
    Thanks,

How big is the database and how much downtime can you afford ? One simple option is to export from 10.2.0.1 and import into 11.2.0.3.
The other option is to apply the 10.2.0.2 patch on the existing database, then follow the steps in MOS Doc 403522.1 (replace 10.2.0.5 with your 1.2.0.3 version)

  • Oracle 9.2.0.6 upgrade to 11gR2

    Hi,
My database is 2TB in size. The database is 9.2.0.6 running on Solaris 8. It is configured with Physical Standby dataguard.
The current plan is to upgrade the database to 11.2.0.3. What will be the best way to do the upgrade? I am thinking on the Logical Standby method.
Is it possible to do logical standby between 9i and 11g?
Can i convert the physical standby database I have now to logical standby and upgrade the database to 11g?
Is there any limitation on logical standby database? eg. data types?

    Hi,
There are two concerns about your upgrade.
Direct upgrade to 11.2.0 is not support from version 9.2.0.6, at least you should be on version 9.2.0.8.
11.2.0.3 is not supported on solris8, at least you should be on OS version - Solaris 10.

    Thanks for any help
I think others have answered most of your questions, but you indicated that "iTunes 10 is for Intel Macs only" -- that is not actually correct, you can certainly run iTunes 10 on your G5 PowerPC. What you need to do is:
    (1) upgrade to 10.5 operating system
    (2) upgrade to iTunes 10
While Apple doesn't officially sell 10.5 anymore (Apple sells 10.6, but 10.6 won't install on your G5 PowerPC), if you call their 800 number and explain that you need it to use your new iPhone, they may be able to sell you a copy from old inventory. Alternatively, some retailers are still selling older inventory 10.5 install DVDs but you need the version that installs on any computer, many 10.5 disks are made for a specific model only.
Before you do either (1) or (2) above, make sure you have enough memory as indicated by Apple in their system requirements. If you need more memory, it is inexpensive to upgrade.

  • Oracle Database 11gR1 32-bit upgrade to 11gr2 64-bit

    Hello All,
My current server is having following configuration:
    OS               : RHEL 4.6 32 bit
    Product         : Oracle EBS 11i
    DB               : 11gR1
    Target machine:
    OS               : RHEL 5.8 64 bit
I want to convert my current single node EBS 11i to multi-node (two node) architecture. We have to migrate our 11gR1 over 64 bit machine.
I was trying to create create a 32 bit instance over new target server through rapid clone. But it is not supported to install 32 bit 11g over 64 bit OS, so I am now taking new path to do the same, trying to upgrade 11gR1 32 bit database directly to 11gr2 64 bit. Please suggest me appropriate procedure to perform it. Any Oracle Document over the same would be wonderful. I tried to search over Metalink but with no success.
Kindly share your experience if anyone here performed the same or similar.
    Regards
    RanjanS

You can get 11gR1 64-bit download this way:
    Previous Database Release Software
Oracle Database 10.2 and 11.1 are no longer available for download. The software is available as a media or FTP request for those customers who own a valid Oracle Database product license for any edition.
To request access to these releases, follow the instructions in Oracle Support Document 1071023.1 (Requesting Physical Shipment or Download URL for Software Media) from My Oracle Support.
NOTE: for Oracle Database 10.2, you should request 10.2.0.1 even if you want to install a later patch set. Once you install 10.2.0.1 you can then apply any 10.2 patch set. Similarly, for 11.1 request 11.1.0.6 which must be applied before installing 11.1.0.7. Patch sets can be downloaded from the Patches and Updates tab on My Oracle Support.
And about direct upgrade I have done that successfully for minor versions for example 11.1.0.6 to 11.1.0.7 so that might be possible also for 11.1. to 11.2 .

  • Oracle 11.2.0.4 order of upgrade discussion

    Hi all:
We have Oracle DB 11.2.0.3 on IBM AIX (power system, os level 4, 64bit), need to upgrade it to 11.2.0.4 and apply CPUJAN2015 patch.
We already complete upgrade in UAT, and prepare for Prod in client site. UAT OS directory set up is: home_1 (11.2.0.3), home_2 (11.2.0.4).
Due to serious client's request, we need to keep 'home_1' always for latest oracle version, so need to rename home_2 to home_1 after upgrade.  Client and us are discussing the 'order-of-upgrade' due to directory rename.  Our approach is:
originally,  server has 'home_1' 11.2.0.3 and 'home_2' .  Take backup of 'home_1' oracle binaries, RMAN backup DB.
    Start upgrade process -
    1. install 11.2.0.4 to 'home_2'. [use guidelines in 11.2.0.4 oracle installation by OUI]
    2. cd to 'home_2'/dbs, open DB by 'home_2/dbs/bin/sqlplus (sure we use correct configuration files like initSID.ora and tns files, etc):
          sqlplus > startup upgrade;
        >@catupgrad.sql; exit;
          sqlplus > startup
                        >@utlu112s.sql; @catuppst.sql; @utlrp.sql;
    3. shutdown/startup DB based on necessary
    4. apply CPUJAN2015 patch. [use guidelines in README file in patch "p20132517_112040_aix64"]
    5. shutdown/startup DB and listener based on necessary.
we rename 'home_1' (11.2.0.3) -> 'home_1bkup' (11.2.0.3), 'home_2' (11.2.0.4) -> 'home_1' (11.2.0.4).  So next upgrade we'll install new version in 'home_2' again, and start same process.  This way saves us from renaming many server scripts/application code which point to 'home_1'.
    Our client suggested approach-
    1) Backup database instance (RMAN) or  (file copy when database is shutdown down) in 11.2.0.3.
    2) Install 11.2.0.4 in HOME_2
    3) Move HOME_2 to HOME_1 (the original home of 11.2.0.3)
    4) Start up database instance in upgrade mode and upgrade the database to the 11.2.0.4
    5) ( may need to do some shutdown startup to ensure it is working fine).
    6) Completed?
    7) Shutdown database instance
    8) Move HOME_1 to HOME_2 (the original home of 11.2.0.4)
    9) Oracle CPU patch apply
    10) Move HOME_2 to HOME_1 (the original home of 11.2.0.3)
    11) Start up database instance in and update cpu to the database
    12) Backup database instance (RMAN) or  (file copy when database is shutdown down) in 11.2.0.4.
This will ensure at all time, we are following Oracle’s ‘model’ upgrade path.
I feel step 8 & 10 moving is unnecessary, can't we stay the same oracle home, 'home_2' (11.2.0.4) in our approach, and apply CPU patch at DB? Client argues is 'for all time we following oracle's model upgrade path',  what is 'model upgrade'?  is any Doc ID for it?  we don't want to unnecessary moving oracle home too many times - that is risky and many cause potention problem.
3rd enhanced approach we have so far -
    1) Backup database instance & oracle binaries in 11.2.0.3 HOME_1 to 'HOME_1bkup'.
    2) Install 11.2.0.4 in HOME_2
    3) In HOME_2, start up database instance in upgrade mode, upgrade & apply CPU to database in our previous procedure.
    4) ( may need to do some shutdown startup to ensure it is working fine).
    5) Completed?
    6) Shutdown database instance in HOME_2
    7) Backup database instance (copy datafile over os) & oracle binaries in 11.2.0.4 HOME_2 to 'HOME_2bkup'.
    8) Move HOME_2 to HOME_1
    9) Start up database instance in HOME_1 (11.2.0.4).
This way has backups for 11.2.0.3 and 11.2.0.4.
Can anyone take a look and let us know any important error or missing steps in the above, especially the 3rd approach?
    thank you very much!!

Using new ORACLE_HOME is one of the best practice to reduce the downtime required for upgrade since new home can be created independent of actual downtime.
in other words, you can install new binaries in new home without impacting existing DB. During the upgrade, all you need to do is point the instance to new home and perform the DB upgrade. This method also helps in quick rollback since you have original ORACLE_HOME intact. One more  benefit is that you don't need to take separate ORACLE_HOME backup since you already have everything.
There is no need of following this approach for CPU patching since it is very simple to rollback failed CPU patch.
Please remember, changing oracle_home directory might require you to do relinking so it is recommended to perform this on some non-prod system first.
    Hope it helps.
    Thanks,
    Abhi

  • Connection Problem Oracle 8.1.7 on Win2000

    Hi,
I have installed Oracle(8.1.7) on Win2000 Server and I installed Dev2.1 on client and when I am connecting to this database I am getting the foll error
    ERROR:ORA-12545:TNS:name lookup failure
I checked the TNSNAMES.ORA file on Client and specify the IP address of Server but still it is not connecting but when I am giving TNSPING <service name> It shows me ok it means it listening to server.
Can anyone Please help me in this

The ORA-12545 error is a failure to resolve a hostname to an IP address, which
usually means that the hostname in the (host= <hostname>) value in the
    tnsnames.ora is not resolving.
Occasionally clients will get this error even though they already have the IP
address in the tnsnames.ora. The reason for this is that when a client makes
a connection to a listener on Windows NT or a shared connection to a listener
on Unix, the connection gets redirected. What this means is that a redirect
packet is sent back from the listener to the client and the client then makes a
new connection. When the listener redirects the connection it sends the
addressing information from the listener.ora, or in the case of MTS the
init.ora, back to the client in a redirect packet. The client must then
resolve that addressing information. If the listener.ora or init.ora
contains a hostname that the client can't resolve, the connection attempt will
fail with an ORA-12545 error even though the information in the tnsnames.ora
    is correct.
This error can often be resolved by using the server's ip address instead of
hostname in the listener.ora (init.ora if using MTS) which should force the
listener to use the ip address in the redirect packet. A better solution to
this error is to enable the client to resolve the hostname that is being
    returned in the redirect packet.
When the client machine is capable of resolving the fully qualified domain name
to an IP address this error will not occur. This is done by adding the server's
IP address, hostname, and fully qualified domain name to the name resolution
method the that network is using (usually DNS). If this is not possible,
the information can be added to the client machine's hosts file.
On NT this file is located at c:\winnt\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Because redirects in 8i contain the fully qualified domain name, hostname to
IP address resolution is critical for a successful connection.
