Oracle 9i Database Release 2 Installation, login

I have just installed Oracle 9i Database Release 2 Personal Edition (Oracle9i Database 9.2.0.1.0) on my home computer, which is running Windows XP Professional. My intent is to use the SQL Plus program to create basic databases for my college class. I now need to know how to create/use the login to begin using SQL Plus, especially with the host string.
Keep in mind:
-This is my first time using Oracle
-I don't want anything fancy, just the basics
-I have looked at the previous topics and they all refer to a Unix install or relate to topics I don't understand.
-I am looking for a response that my Grandma could almost understand. I want the step-by-step procedures, what things to click on, and so on. If it's a thirty-page post, I don't mind as long as I can start getting some homework done.

Since you are trying to login on the same machine, try this:
sqlplus /nolog
connect / as sysdba
Use the Net Configuration Assistant to add the service name to your tnsnames.ora ...

Telling us that you are using 11.1 helps. But it is far from a complete description of the environment. What edition of the database are you using? What options are installed? What Enterprise Manager packs are licensed? Is any of this changable? Could you license another option for the database or another pack for Enterprise Manager if that was necessary?
What does it mean to you to "mask data"? Do you want to store the data on disk and then mask the data in the presentation layer when certain people query it (i.e. store the patient's social security number in the database but only present ***-**- and the last 4 digits to certain sets of employees)? Do you want to hide entire fields from certain people? Do you want to change the data stored in the database when you are refreshing a lower environment with production data? If so, do you need and/or want this process to be either determinisitic or reversable or both?

I go to the DOS console and type:
c:> sqlplus scott/tiger@ORCL
and I get:
ERROR: ORA-28000: the account is locked
I did this right after I restarted my computer.
When I use the Enterprise Manager at:
http://localhost:5500/em/
I get for ORCL:
Status: Status Pending
Status Pending Since: Unavailable
Seems that I can never get the database started properly?! When I press the Startup/Shutdown button I get:
Current Status: open
This is the correct current database status, although it doesnot match the current status in the sitemap page
What does this mean? Do you think this may contain the clue to the answer to this problem?
When I restart the Database I get the same status: unavailable.
I need your help to resolve this problem. The alternative is to revert back to Oracle 9i DB Server. Thank you in advance.

I can help you with the SCOTT account being locked. Try:
sqlplus /nolog
connect / as sysdba
alter user scott identified by tiger account unlock;

Oracle 10g Database control installation error

Hi,
Installing oracle 10g database control had give me an error.But Repository created successfully . please find the log file below
Is there i need to install ...? before i start to run emca to install Database Control.

i didn't find jms.xml,rmi.xml,http-web-site.xml etc in this location /opt/db/oracle/product/10.2.0/oc4j/j2ee/OC4J_DBConsole/config/
File/directory /opt/db/oracle/product/10.2.0/sysman/emdrep/config/repository.variables does not exist
Let me know how to slove this error.

Hi all,
i started creating database control repository, when i saw emca running i had seen repository created successfully , but sysman user is not created at this point of time. Then i looked into emca_repos_create_2008-04-10_11-57-03-AM.log file but the file is unable to open because it's looking for file emreposcre.sql which creates sysman user in this location /opt/db/oracle/product/10.2.0/sysman/admin/emdrep/sql/
i feel while installing the database these files are not created....? or i need to run any scripts before running emca ....?
give me some inputs to this thread.

Oracle 10g Database Release 1 Installation Issue

Hi:
The install seems to finish everything without a problem except when it's configuring the Configuration Assistants, specifically the Oracle Database Configuration Assistants (after succeeding Oracle Net Configuration Assistant and iSQL*Plus Configuration Assistant).
The configuration stopped at 2% during the progress as it's copying database files (cloning database creation) and a pop-up flagged "ORA-12638: Credential retrieval failed". If I click "Ignore" then the same message will come up again. I can keep clicking ignore to have it finished the process but at the end it will flag: "Enterprise manager configuration failed due to the following error - 'job_queue_processes' must be greater than or equal to 1..." Then the install showed the configuration "Succeeded" and I exited out of the install.
When I open the Oracle Enterprise Manager Console from the Oracle Client package options of the Windows Start Menu and try to connect to the ORCL_LOCALHOST database, I typed in the default username and password that was assigned during the install ("orcl" and "orcl") and I pop-up warned that "SID given in connect descriptor could not be resolved." Does anyone know what goes wrong here? I have selected all the default option during the install except I have selected a single password for multiple databse items and assigned the single password "orcl" for all instances. Hence "orcl" is the only term I have used for username, database name, SID and password. Will that generate an issue or there's another problem that's affecting my progress.
My ultimate goal is to be able to connect to the database and create some schemas. Hope this details my problem and please feel free to request more info if necessary. Thanks and have a nice day.

I got around it by editing the network/admin/sqlnet.ora file as follows:SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NONE)

Installing Oracle 11g database (release 2) on Windows 7 Professional 64bit

Hi All,
I am having a problem installing the Oracle database, I go to the site and download the 2 Oracle zip files.
I create a directory C:\temp\
I unzip "1of2" and place the "database" folder in my "temp" folder.
Question 1: In the "2of2" do I take the database/stage/components and place them in the "1of2" database/stage/components folder? not sure how to merge the contents of the zips but this seems like the logical thing to do.
Then I run setup.exe.
Oracle Universal Installer:
Screen 1: I enter email, and uncheck the oracle support box "i wish to receive security updatesvia My Oracle Support".
Note: little "connection failed" popup box, I check it's box "I want to remain uninformed if critical security issues in my configuration", click continue.
Screen 2: install database software only.
Screen 3: Single instance database installation.
Screen 4: I select "English"
Screen 5: I choose to install "Enterprise Edition"
Screen 6: it shows me Oracle base C:\app\<myuser>
software location: C:\app\<myuser>\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1
Screen 7: validating target environment to meet minimum installation loading bar.
ERROR: gets to 100% and the entire OUI abruptly closes with no warning or error message. No further Installation or anything.
please provide so insight on this, I am total at a loss right now and need to get this working.

Oracle 9i database release 9.2.0.1 hanging

We have installed oracle 9i release 9.2.0.1 on an AIX 5.2 using HACMP
Periodicaly, the database hang, we are not able to make a connection to the database.
In this case, we kill oracle processes (SGA and connections) to be able to restart the database. In case of production it's too worry!
So, do someone encounter this kind of problem? which kind of solution exist for that problem?

I would first suggest you to move to Oracle 10g.
9.2.0.1 is no more supported by Oracle.
Read the following doc's

I am asking this because for Oracle 11G there are already two upgrades and from 8i onwards no relase has crossed more then 2 upgrade mark.
Second most important part is that whenever Oracle brings new version of database also bring new features which changes whole dimension in database market.
Might cloud computing be there next big secrate weapon for next release.

i got the below error,
even sysdba itself unable to login.
ORA_12560 tnsprotocol adapter error.

You may check if the service OracleService<SID> is up on the control panel.
This error may happens on Windows when this service is stopped.

Oracle 9i and Database Release 2

Hi,
I was wondering if anybody knows approximately when the Oracle
9i Database Release 2 (w/ XDB) is said to be available. Also, I
was wondering how it will be available, such as a download
(patch), the whole product or some other way.
If possible, can you tell me if it is worth upgrading to 9i now
or wait until a little later?

Oracle 9.2.0 does not support connectivity to Oracle 7 databases. The newest version you can use to connect to Oracle 7 is Oracle 9.0.1.

I have a problem to connect Developer Suite Release 2 forms 9 with Oracle 9i database release 1. I have done net8 easy configuration but no success. The error is ORA-12514 TNS: Listener could not resolve SERVICE_NAME given in connect descriptor. I am not using any application server. Can any one help me to solve this problem.

Configure the net configuration for both 9idb and 9ids in the same way. Make sure the TNSlisner is started.
