Oracle 9i Solaris8 Out of Memory
I'm fairly new to oracle and am running into a situation. We recently had the server upgraded to 16GB of RAM from 4GB. I am trying to increase the SGA Size so I can utilize more memory for buffer cache, but receive the ORA-27102 error when attemping to set my SGA_MAX_SIZE parameter to 4,294,967,296 (4GB)
my etc/system is as follows:
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=12884901888
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmin=1
set shmsys:shminfo_shmmni=1380
set shmsys:shminfo_shmseg=1290
set semsys:seminfo_semmns=7680
set semsys:seminfo_semmni=1350
set semsys:seminfo_semmsl=2980
Is there something I am missing here? Should I not set SGA_MAX_SIZE and set the individual parameters themselves? I was hoping to utilize the benefits of the SGA Dynamic Sizing for our data loads in the evening by scheduling jobs to adjust the settings.
My thought process was they just upgraded the server with 4x the RAM. As this is only an Oracle DB Server, I figured why waste the RAM and I would attempt to tune the SGA and PGA for best performance
As of now, our SGA is 1GB and our PGA is 1GB
I had read that recommended settings for SGA is .55 of total available ram (after leaving 10-20% for the O/S)
I wanted to increase the buffer cache, utilizing the db_nk_cache_size to store tables/indexes of various sizes in thier own memory segments (i.e. small dimension tables in the 2k, and larger fact tables in the 16k)
I am extremely new to Oracle performance tuning, (i.e. first attempt) and would like to see if I can increase the performance of our overnight data loads
This is a Data Warehouse with peak load times from midnight to 3 am.

Oracle 9i running out of memory
Folks !
I have a simple 3 table schema with a few thousand entries each. After dedicating gigabytes of hard disk space and 50% of my 1+ GB memory, I do a few simple Oracle Text "contains" searches (see below) on these tables and oracle seems to grow some 25 MB after each query (which typically return less than a dozen rows each) till it eventually runs out of memory and I have to reboot the system (Sun Solaris).
This is on Solaris 9/Sparc with Oracle 9.2 . My query is simple right outer join. I think the memory growth is related to Oracle Text index/caching since memory utilization seems pretty stable with simple like '%xx%' queries.
"top" shows a dozen or so processes each with about 400MB RSS/SIZE. It has been a while since I did Oracle DBA work but I am nothing special here. Databse has all the default settings that you get when you create an Oracle database.
I have played with SGA sizes and no matter how large or small the size of SGA/PGA, Oracle runs out of memory and crashes the system. Pretty stupid to an Enterprise databas to die like that.
Any clue on how to arrest the fatal growth of memory for Oracle 9i r2?
thanks a lot.
-Sanjay
PS: The query is:
SELECT substr(sdn_name,1,32) as name, substr(alt_name,1,32) as alt_name, sdn.ent_num, alt_num, score(1), score(2)
FROM sdn, alt
where sdn.ent_num = alt.ent_num(+)
and (contains(sdn_name,'$BIN, $LADEN',1) > 0 or
contains(alt_name,'$BIN, $LADEN',2) > 0)
order by ent_num, score(1), score(2) desc;
There are following two indexes on the two tables:
create index sdn_name on sdn(sdn_name) indextype is ctxsys.context;
create index alt_name on alt(alt_name) indextype is ctxsys.context;I am already using MTS.
Atached is the init.ora file below.
may be I should repost this article with subject "memory leak in Oracle" to catch developer attention. I posted this a few weeks back in Oracle Text groiup and no response there either.
Thanks for you help.

Oracle XML CLOB out of memory error
I am running several of Oracle's XML tools
to store large XML documents in Oracle.
I am successful with a 3 MB file, but not
with a 20 MB file. I get an "out of memory"
exception in LobPlsqlUtil.class.
The CLOB is accessed through the method
CLOB.getCharacterStream(), which is then
handed off to an XMLParser class. The
exact exception is below:
Any ideas? Thanks, Rich
==========================================
Unhandled exception breakpoint occurred at line 135 in file [D:\programs\jdev\jdbc\lib\oracle8.1.7\classes12.zip]\oracle\sql\LobPlsqlUtil.class: java.lang.OutOfMemoryError.
==============================I have some more information to add to the
original post. I found that if I access the
CLOB very fast then I can get all 20 MB of
data from the CLOB. If I access it slowly
(meaning that I pass CLOB.getCharacterStream
to a parser) then it fails.
I wrote my own InputStream as a wrapper
around CLOB, using the CLOB.getChars()
function. If I pass this input stream to
a parser (one of Oracles, or Xerces) and
get the data chunks on demand, it still
fails. If, instead, I read all the CLOB
data as fast as possible, and buffer it
locally before passing it on to the parser,
then I get all 20 MB. Go figure!!
Also, when the CLOB reading fails, it doesn't
help to get a new ResultSet, or to close and
open a new Connection and try to start where
it left off. -
Oracle Discoverer Administrator 'OUT OF MEMORY'
Hi ,
I'm trying to include a case statement in the custom folder based on a query.when I include the case statement in the SQL query and click Validate SQL button i get error 'out of memory'.
can anyone plz help me with this.
thanksHi
The Out of Memory is not 100% related to the amount of memory you have on your machine. There is an internal cache that it is working with and this is controlled from within your system registry. These settings can be found in [HKEY_CURRENT_USER]\Software\Oracle\Discoverer 10\Application and they are called MaxVirtualDiskMem and MaxVirtualHeapMem and these are typically set to the amount of memory on your PC or even higher where 512000000 equates to 500 MB. I have rarely seen making a change to these have any impact but you can always try.
As a test, try using the Admin command line interface to do what you want. I have seen exports, as mentioned by Russ, fail using the application but work just fine when called from the command line.
You seem to be saying when you run the query yet in your question you say running in Discoverer Administrator. You cannot run a query in Administrator so are you saying that you get this issue when running the query in Desktop or in Plus? For Desktop you can try altering the MaxVirtualDiskMem and MaxVirtualHeapMem, whereas for Plus these will have to be changed in the pref.txt for the application server.
You can also try increang

求解,为什么oracle只设了使用180G内存,还有76G给操作系统用,但从TOP看内存几乎耗尽,Oracle经常out of memory导致连接不上?

Hi, I am installing Oracle 11g 64 bit in my server which is having windows server 2008 R2, and 64GB RAM. The software is installed successfully but while database creation it hangs at 2% progress copying database files. At this moment the full 64 GB memory gets consumed by Oracle installer and out of memory error flashed.
Also i got some memory error report on oracle website as follows, but I am unable to find how to solve this problem
*5.2.4 ORA-27102 Out of Memory Error*
When creating a database on a computer with large physical memory, Oracle Universal Installer or Database Configuration may display an out of memory error.
Workaround:
Select the Advanced Installation type during installation, or run Database Configuration Assistant after a software only installation and reduce the memory allocated for Oracle based on the shared memory settings for your operating system.
This issue is tracked with Oracle bug 9811726.
Please help me.This is the dbca log file->

Out of memory using Windows Server 2003 and Oracle 9.2.0.3
Hi,
I just installed both Windows Server 2003 and Oracle 9.2.0.3. The server I am using has 4 gigabytes of memory installed, and windows shows that to be the actual physical memory on the server. The paging file is 8 gigabytes for a total of 12 gigabytes of virtual memory.
Using the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant, I create a new database using default values. After verifying the installation worked OK (database started, queries ran), I attempted to change some of the memory parameters and was able to start the database using about 1.4 gigabytes of total SGA, with the O/S using about .3 gigabytes for a total of 1.7 gigabytes. I then attempted to change the buffer cache + 1 gigabyte for a total of 2 gigabytes. Now the database will not start and I get an out of memory error ora-27102 with an additional O/S memory error of "O/S Error: (OS 8) Not enough storage is available to process this command".
So, I have two problems:
1) With 4 gigabytes installed, and the O/S using only about 300 megabytes, why isn't Oracle able to take advantage of the memory on this machine past the 1.7 gigabytes (as reported by Windows task manager).
2) How do I change the spfile memory parameters so the database will start using spfile? I can start the database pointing to a pfile with lesser memory parameters, but I don't know how to effect change on the spfile, since I cannot start with the spfile.
Both these technologies (9.2.0.3 and Server 2003) are new to me, so any insight would be appreciated!
HERE ARE THE SPFILE PARAMETERS THAT WORKED:

Thank you.CREATE SPFILE
Purpose
Use the CREATE SPFILE statement to create a server parameter file from a client-side initialization parameter file. Server parameter files are binary files that exist only on the server and are called from client locations to start up the database.
Server parameter files let you make persistent changes to individual parameters. When you use a server parameter file, you can specify in an ALTER SYSTEM SET parameter statement that the new parameter value should be persistent. This means that the new value applies not only in the current instance, but also to any instances that are started up subsequently. Traditional client-side parameter files do not let you make persistent changes to parameter values. Because they are located on the server, these files allow for automatic database tuning by Oracle and for backup by Recovery Manager (RMAN).
To use a server parameter file when starting up the database, you must create it from a traditional text initialization parameter file using the CREATE SPFILE statement.
All instances in an Real Application Clusters environment must use the same server parameter file. However, when otherwise permitted, individual instances can have different settings of the same parameter within this one file. Instance-specific parameter definitions are specified as SID.parameter = value, where SID is the instance identifier.
The method of starting up the database with a server parameter file depends on whether you create a default or nondefault server parameter file. Please refer to "Creating a Server Parameter File: Examples" for examples of how to use server parameter files.

Prerequisites
You must have the SYSDBA or the SYSOPER system privilege to execute this statement. You can execute this statement before or after instance startup. However, if you have already started an instance using spfile_name, you cannot specify the same spfile_name in this statement.
Syntax
create_spfile::=
Text description of create_spfile
Semantics
spfile_name
This clause lets you specify a name for the server parameter file you are creating.
If you do not specify spfile_name, Oracle uses the platform-specific default server parameter filename. If spfile_name already exists on the server, this statement will overwrite it. When using a default server parameter file, you start up the database without referring to the file by name.
If you do specify spfile_name, you are creating a nondefault server parameter file. In this case, to start up the database, you must first create a single-line traditional parameter file that points to the server parameter file, and then name the single-line file in your STARTUP command.
See Also:
"Creating a Server Parameter File: Examples" for information on starting up the database with default and nondefault server parameter files
Oracle9i Database Administrator's Guide for Windows (or other appropriate operating system specific documentation) for default parameter file names
pfile_name
Specify the traditional initialization parameter file from which you want to create a server parameter file.
If you specify pfile_name, the parameter file must reside on the server. If it does not reside in the default directory for parameter files on your operating system, you must specify the full path.
If you do not specify pfile_name, Oracle looks in the default directory for parameter files on your operating system for the default parameter filename, and uses that file. If that file does not exist in the expected directory, Oracle returns an error.
Note:
In a Real Application Clusters environment, you must first combine all instance parameter files into one file before specifying it in this statement to create a server parameter file. For information on accomplishing this step, see Oracle9i Real Application Clusters Setup and Configuration.
Examples
Creating a Server Parameter File: Examples
The following example creates a default server parameter file from a client initialization parameter file named t_init1.ora:
CREATE SPFILE
FROM PFILE = '$ORACLE_HOME/work/t_init1.ora';
Note:
Typically you will need to specify the full path and filename for parameter files on your operating system. Please refer to your Oracle operating system documentation for path information.
When you create a default server parameter file, you subsequently start up the database using that server parameter file by using the SQL*Plus command STARTUP without the PFILE parameter, as follows:
STARTUP
The following example creates a nondefault server parameter file s_params.ora from a client initialization file named t_init1.ora:
CREATE SPFILE = 's_params.ora'
FROM PFILE = '$ORACLE_HOME/work/t_init1.ora';
When you create a nondefault server parameter file, you subsequently start up the database by first creating a traditional parameter file containing the following single line:
spfile = 's_params.ora'
The name of this parameter file must comply with the naming conventions of your operating system. You then use the single-line parameter file in the STARTUP command. The following example shows how to start up the database, assuming that the single-line parameter file is named new_param.ora:
STARTUP PFILE=new_param.ora

Oracle 9i Database installation error ORA-27102: out of memory HELP
Hello
Appologies if this post has been answered already, or if I am meant to post some data capture to show what is the issue however i am a bit unsure what I need.
I have downloaded oracle 9i for my university course as I need to have it to do some SQL and Forms building.
I have had a lot of issues but I have battled through them - however now I am stuck on this one.
I install Oracle and then the below:
Install Oracle Database 9.2.0.1.0
Personal Edition 2.80gb
General Purpose
I leave the defualt port
Set my database name
Select the location
Character set etc
then the database config assistant starts to install the new database at 46% i get the error on a pop up window :
ORA-27102: out of memory
How can I resolve this??
I am a mainframe programmer and not at all in anyway a windows whizz - please oculd someone help a dummy understand??
Again thank you all very muchYou have too few RAM on your machine, even you could successfully create an instance, it's going to slow as hell.
When you run DBCA to create database, instead of actually creating the database you could choose to dump the SQL scripts and files used for database creation to a directory. This way will give you a chance to modify pfile and reduce the SGA parameter. I believe the default SGA of instance created by DBCA is already beyond your RAM limit. -
Oracle Error 'ORA-27102: out of memory' - Shared memory parameters correct.
Advice please!
We’ve recently shut down our Oracle test server in order to increase file system capacity. When we rebooted some of the databases wouldn’t start up. It started the first 4 instances and then errored out saying “ORA-27102: out of memory“.
I’m pretty sure it’s nothing to do with the file system because we actually reverted back to the old file system and the databases still wouldn’t start. I think it’s more likely that something’s gone awry whilst the databases were actually running, and the problem has only manifested itself once we stopped and restarted them.
I have researched the error and forud this artical and similar: http://var-adm.blogspot.co.uk/2013/04/adjust-solaris-10-shared-memory-to.html
Everything suggests that Oracle is trying to create a larger shared memory segment than is allowed. The thing is, we’ve never changed our shared memory settings, and one minute it was working, the next it isn’t. To confirm this I checked the shared memory, which is as follows:
sswift4# prctl -n project.max-shm-memory $$
process: 926: bash
NAME PRIVILEGE VALUE FLAG ACTION RECIPIENT
project.max-shm-memory
privileged 7.64GB - deny -
system 16.0EB max deny -
As suggested in the above article, I checked the alert log and found the ‘WARNING: EINVAL’ message which is as follows:
WARNING: EINVAL creating segment of size 0x000000005e002000
Converting this to decimal, it’s trying to create something of 1.5 GB, well within the shared memory settings, which suggests that this isn’t the problem.
We are running Oracle 10g and 11g on Solaris 10 Sparc. The error does not seem to be instance specific, we have 8 instances on this box all with SGA max of 2000m. The server has 32GB of memory available.
Any advice would be helpful.
Thanks in advance.
DebsThanks for your quick responses - we have now resolved the issue.
The shared memory value was set on the command line but not saved.
Therefore once we rebooted it lost the configuration. this has been altered by our UNIX admin and all DBs have started without issue.
Thanks
Debs -
Oracle BPM installed Java out-of-memory exception
Hi,
I have installed the oracle BPM software in the server have the Ram capacity 8 GB,Could you please suggest some of the do's and don't's to avoid the Java out-of-memory exception which normally appearing on the console of weblogic server.
My Server details,
Windows 2008 R2 64 bit, RAM 8 GB,
The required BPM s/w I installed from the link below,
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/bpm/downloads/index.html?ssSourceSiteId=ocomen
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards,
Shyam
Edited by: user13821489 on 06-Feb-2011 22:45I had to increase JVM xmx/maxperm in the "set*Env.sh" scripts in the directory where you start WLS. In my dev environment, deploying BAM & BPM together with the Admin server, I finally allocated 4GB max. Jdev.conf is also better if you allocate > 1GB - mine is 1.4GB. I also watch process memory. Multiple re-deployments in my development environment seem to increase the memory, even if I remove process instances and undeploy first. I don't understand the internals very well so perhaps it is behaving correctly, but restarting WLS frees the unused memory that I expected gc to reclaim.

Solaris 10, Oracle 10g and ORA-27102 out of memory
After much STFW'ing, RTFM'ing and experimenting I finally got Oracle 10g to start a database on a SunBlade 100 with 512MB of memory and Solaris 10. As most of the replies on the web about error 27102 "out of memory" address solutions in Solaris 8 and 9, I thought I should post a clear description of the solution here.
Unlike earlier releases of Solaris, most of the system parameters needed to run Oracle are already set properly, so the only one you need is the maximum shared memory parameter. In earlier versions this was called SHMMAX and was set by editing the /etc/system file and rebooting. With Solaris 10 you set this by modifying a "Resource Control Value". You can do this temporarily by using prctl, but that is lost at reboot so you will need to add the command to the oracle user's .profile. The other option is to create a default project for the oracle user:
projadd -U oracle -K "project.max-shm-memory=(priv,2048MB,deny)" user.oraclewhat this does:
- makes a project named "user.oracle" with the user oracle as it's only member.
- because the name was of the form "user.username" it becomes the oracle user's default project.
- the value of the maximum shared memory is set to 2gb, you might want to use a larger value here if you have more memory and swap.
- no reboot is needed, the user will get the new value at their next login.thanks buddy. I was in this same tricky situation. and ur post solved my prblem.
Is this a bug with solaris 10.
Later i discovered.. on Oracle documentation that.. there r sum parameters that needed to be taken care while pre-installation of Oracle binaries.
Here is the excerpts.
The Oracle installer recognizes kernel parameters set using this method, but it is now deprecated in favour of resource control projects, explained below.
As the root user, issue the following command.
projadd oracle
Append the following line to the "/etc/user_attr" file.
oracle::::project=oracle
If you've performed a default installation, it is likely that the only kernel parameter you need to alter is "max-shm-memory". To check the current value issue the following command.
# prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -i project oracle
project: 100: oracle
NAME PRIVILEGE VALUE FLAG ACTION RECIPIENT
project.max-shm-memory
privileged 254MB - deny
system 16.0EB max deny
To reset this value, make sure at least one session is logged in as the oracle user, then from the root user issue the following commands.
# prctl -n project.max-shm-memory -v 4gb -r -i project oracle
# projmod -s -K "project.max-shm-memory=(priv,4gb,deny)" oracle
The first dynamically resets the value, while the second makes changes to the "/etc/project" file so the value is persistent between reboots.
# cat /etc/project
system:0::::
user.root:1::::
noproject:2::::
default:3::::
group.staff:10::::
oracle:100::::project.max-shm-memory=(priv,4294967296,deny)
The Oracle installer seems incapable of recognising kernel parameter set using resource control projects, but if you ignore the warnings the installation completes successfully.Even this method works.

Hi,
I work with SPARCT3 32Gb Ram, Solaris 10. Trabajo con contenedores/zonas.
I try to install some DB in the same container.
The max-shm-memory variable set to 8G, 10G, 12G, 14G and 16G but its the same.
The first installation its work, and i set the SGA to 2G, in the second installation with dbca, it showme the out of memory, i had to turn off the first installation to complete the second.
When the second has install, i try to startup the first installation but it showme the out of memory.

Hi, I want to install oracle on my solaris machine. I have 2.5G RAM and more than 5G swap file. But the ORA-27102: out of memory error occurred at installing the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant step(Copying database files Creating and starting Oracle instance).

What's the reason and how may I resolve it?
Thanks!I set some kernel parameters like: set shmsys:shminfo_shmmax=4294967295 and so on. Restart the computer and run dbca+ and configure in advance mode. There's a stage require the size of flash_recover_segment of which the default size number is 2048M. WOW, out of memory on my pc of course.
So I think it's the parameter value during the installation progress bring on the ORA-27102 problem. However, during the first installation, there's no prompt for me to enter the parameter; or I didn't see. -

Is oracle expanding the SPARQL queries in java side or keeping the results in cache.
How to solve it ?Hi,
We will need a re-producible test case (preferably small) to figure out why you are getting out of memory. You can send it to Oracle Support or email me at alan dot wu at oracle dot com.
Jena Adapter does not cache SPARQL query results on the Java side. The T4CPreparedStatement is not even in Jena Adapter's
code path or RDF's code path.

Windows 64-Bit Oracle DBCA creating new Instance ORA-27102: out of memory
Wondering has anyone encountered this?
We are running Oracle 10 R2 running on Windows Server 2003 ( This database is on a 64-bit Platform)
Memory capacity is 16 GB on the server.
We are using DBCA to streamline db creation of the new “EDR” DB instance – here are a few different attempts we’ve done:
(all have failed )
FYI - during this installation we’ve monitored the memory allocation/usage of the Windows Server and there
was about 13-14 GB Free
The existing instance takes up less than 4GB of space.
We tried following:
1. Allocating 8GB of Memory to new EDR Instance without shutting down other Oracle Instance.
2. Allocating 8GB of Memory to new EDR Instance and shutting down other Oracle Instance
3. Rebooted Server keeping other oracle instance shutdown.
4. After Reboot Allocated 8GB to new EDR Instance
5. Attempted allocating less memory 2GB to new EDR instance
6. Early this morning we also tried omitting backup scheduling as part of configuration for DBCA
for that instance.
Each time we received error in DBCA GUI during DB Creation at 2% completion

OSD-00025: additional error informationAfter much effort it was discovered it was a setting during the installation of a parameter which caused this error. Using the TEMPLATE to create a new instance, you can setup parameters
LOCK_SGA = TRUE
causes this error. In addition if in our situation, even if we did not use the "template" created a barebones DB instance. Once the parameter is updated in SQL*Plus it will cause the datbase to be in a in operable state.
You can start it up with a PFILE to fix it, In windows it required modifying the registry to FORCE the PFILE to load, by running on the commandline to use the PFILE it failed.
Hope this helps someone in the future..
ON WINDOWS DONT USE
LOCK_SGA = TRUE
It may work fine for Unix/LINUX OS? But in our current config it had problems.
