Oracle Linux 6 kernel panic boot !!!!
I'm running Oracle Linux 6.3 on a VMware machine which based on a HP Proliant BL620c G7 server.
I've installed IBM Websphere version 8.5 and IBM HTTP Server version 8.5.
After installing VMware tools for this machine, I was asked to reboot the server, but on start we got a kernel panic such as below:
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

Could anyone give me a pointer as to what is or even could be causing this? I'm completely stumped at this point
Thanks,
It looks like the system has trouble opening or finding the /boot volume. I don't think it is an incompatibility with your hardware. You might however want to make sure you installed a recent VMware version and have correct settings to support x64 guest OS. I'm not using VMware anymore, but under VirtualBox such issue can be due to missing I/O apic and VT-x support in the BIOS.

Kernel panic booting from external usb key or CD
I detected small Hard disk problems on my Macbook Pro (10.6.8 totally updated) using disk utility so I decide to restart from CD but have a kernel panic when booting from CD. I also tried to boot from an external USB key that had 10.6 installation on it (the usb key is working because my friend test it on its own computer) and the same happens: a constant kernel panic when I try to boot from an external drive.....
The kernel is showing a kind of com.apple.driver.cpumanagment problem.
I tried everything: I reset the pram, the smc, did a safe boot from my internal partition, try the other usb slot, nothing works. I always have a kernel panic booting from an external source....
What could it be?It looks like you are trying to run a Mac OS X version which isn't compatible with your Mac, so I suppose you have a Mid 2010 or Early 2011 MacBook Pro.
These MacBooks Pro came with a special Mac OS X Snow Leopard version, and you can't start in them from a Mac OS X version older than the one that came with them or from a Snow Leopard retail DVD or USB drive -
Hi all.
First of all, sorry for my English
I'm new here but I'm Apple user since 2007.
After a stupid update (Safari + Java), my macbook rebooted then I get the classic kernel panic screen during booting. I tried to reboot 4/5 times, I tried to use some classic methods (reset PRAM, reset PMU, eject RAM), but the result is the same.
I also tried to boot my linux partition: all OK, ram works well. _Hardware in general works perfectly_.
Then I tried to boot from leopard dvd to reinstall OS and..._Kernel Panic during booting from DVD too_!!
I'm desperate...
what can I do if i can't reinstall OS? This is absurd!
Thanks in advance!See

If you're not able to boot the machine with the install disk, then remove the RAM modules, put one in, and try again. If moving RAM modules doesn't allow booting, then a trip to your nearest Apple repair station is in order. -

The Mac OS X kernel does not panic in this fashion. But you are not running the Mac OS X kernel, you have modified it with a lot of other stuff. If any of these is badly crafted or not completely up-to-date, that is likely to be the source of your troubles:

Hi all!
My first KP since Yosemite!
Tonight, I had to restart my mid 2010 MacBook pro (I noticed some slowness in the past hours) and, while booting back, I got a Kernel Panic. Too good I had the verbose mode on, so I could catch part of the unix subsystem messages, saying something like this (I took a picture!):
AppleIntelCPUPowerManagementClient: ready
Waiting on <dict ID="0"> IOProviderClass <c/key><string ID="1">IOResources </string>
BTCOEXIST off
BRCM tunables:
pullmode [1] txringsize[ 256] txsendqsize[1024] reapmin[ 32] reapcount[ 128]
USBMSC Identifier (non-unique): 000000009833 0x5ac 0x8403 0x9833, 2
After that, the system stops for about 30 sec, and then KP!
I'm not sure, but I think it's Bluetooth related, but I don't even use BT, it was completely disabled in my system.
Fortunately, I reinstalled Yosemite from my external USB pendrive, and, 20 mn later, I was back to work, with all my docs, my user configs... Yes!
I don't want this to happen again, so is there any clue on this issue? Do the verbose unix messages make any sense?

In that case you should already be aware that third party and unsupported hardware modifications are a common cause of kernel panics, and that your Samsung SSD is a likely cause. The fact the KP occurs even in Safe Mode supports that suspicion.
You can either remove the unsupported hardware modifications, pay Apple to do that for you, or revert to a version of OS X compatible with your customized hardware.
Apple may refuse to service modified hardware, but you could ask. -
Kernel Panic boot camp and parallel
Hello,
I've installed boot camp and run windows since the last couple of weeks and it runs flawlessly. However, when I tried to create a virtual machine via Parallel and set my boot camp partition as VM's partition, my Macbook crashed.
Now I cannot even get into MacOS X since it always returned a kernel panic message (Please restart the computer...). I already tried every way imaginable (restart it, press X, reset PRAM, etc), I can't even boot to my own install CD!
Here's the error log (BTW, I'm currently on XP running via boot camp, it seems that I can still access my mac partition via macdrive):

Macbook Black Core2Duo Mac OS X (10.4.8)Unfortunately, what you did not post was the panic log. Open Console and locate the panic.log. Post the log entry for the kernel panic.
I suggest you might try this:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now shutdown the computer for a couple of minutes and then restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing and solving kernel panics.
Why reward points?(Quoted from Discussions Terms of Use.)
The reward system helps to increase community participation. When a community member gives you (or another member) a reward for providing helpful advice or a solution to their question, your accumulated points will increase your status level within the community.
Members may reward you with 5 points if they deem that your reply is helpful and 10 points if you post a solution to their issue. Likewise, when you mark a reply as Helpful or Solved in your own created topic, you will be awarding the respondent with the same point values. -
How to recompile oracle linux kernel ?
Hello
I m trying to install a wireless usb card to my linux OEL5 when i compile ndiswrapper i getting this message :
[root@edf1r1p8 ndiswrapper-1.56]# make install
make -C driver install
make[1]: Entering directory `/root/Desktop/ndiswrapper-1.56/driver'
*** WARNING: This kernel uses 4K stack size option

with this option enabled. Disable CONFIG_4KSTACKS
in kernel's .config file, recompile and install kernel
What should i do to recompile the kernel ?
Thanks
bPlease post the output of the following command:
# uname -r
Recompiling the kernel is a comprehensive procedure. I would try this only as a very last resort.
OEL like any other enterprise linux distribution are not designed for laptops or mobile computing, and therefore will have have limited support for your computer. You might have more success using a desktop Linux distribution such as Fedora or Ubunto. If you have to run enterprise Linux on unsupported hardware, try Virtualbox http://www.virtualbox.org/
Regarding Wifi, you could try the following as root:
Check http://elrepo.org/tiki/tiki-index.php
# rpm -Uvh http://elrepo.org/elrepo-release-5-1.el5.elrepo.noarch.rpm
-> edit /etc/yum.repos.d/elrepo.repo and enable each section by setting enabled=0 to enabled=1
To install ndiswrapper and ndiswrapper-utils after you enabled above repository:
# yum install install kmod-ndiswrapper
Load the ndiswrapper module into the kernel:
# modprobe ndiswrapper
Loading your Windows drivers can then be done using the commandline (as root):
# ndiswrapper -i /path/to/windows-drivers/hardware.infBtw, if you succeed installing your wireless card driver: Configure Wireless in OEL 5 Howto

Oracle Linux 5.7 kernel panic when installing R12
Hi Everyone,
I've a small issue which I like to share and hopefully you are able to help solving it. I've downloaded and installed VMware Player 4 and Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.7 (32 bit) as a guest Virtual Machine on my Window 7 machine. I've also downloaded and extracted all the required zip files and folders for eBusiness released 12 (Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.1.1 Media Pack for Linux x86 [32bit]) from the eDelivery web site. Then, I shared a Windows folder (containing those extracted folders of the R12 eBusiness files and folders) and mount it in the Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.7 under '/tmp/r12installfiles/'.
I ran the ./rapidwiz and the all the tests were OK and then I confirm installing R12 by hitting the 'Next' button. But for several times now, whenever it passes Step 2 when I navigate to the VM guest (because I was doing something on the main host - Window 7), the Oracle Linux OS was always blinking with 'Cap Locks' and 'Scroll Lock' keys and I believe it must have been linux kernel panic. And I could not proceed any further. I had this problem three times, whether I was installing the VISION database or the Fresh database, I still have the same error. It was very time consuming and frustrating. Does anyone have this problem?
Were there any steps that I've missed? Like patching the Linux OS before installing R12 or other steps or processes. Please provide the appropriate steps and instructions as well as the links where I could download them. Thank you for your assistance.
Regards,
JohnJohn,
Thank you for your reply, can you direct me the link for the Oracle E-Business Suite Installation and Upgrade Notes Release 12 (12.1.1) for Linux x86 [ID 761564.1]) document, please? Thank you.You can get it from MOS website -- Go to https://support.oracle.com and type your username/password then search for "761564.1" and you should get the doc.
If you have no MOS access, please note that we cannot post the contents of MOS docs as this violates Oracle support agreement policy.
Thanks,
Hussein -
My Macbook has a Kernel Panic when trying to boot from Mac OS Install DVD
It might also be relevant that my Accounts Preference Panel crashes System Preferences when I try to open it. Disk Utility sees no problems with my drive, and booting into single user mode and doing a disk check has no results.
I am running a 2010 Macbook
2GB Ram
2.4 Duel Core Processor
Mac OS 10.6.8
Windows Installed Via Bootcamp, but problems occured before Windows was installed as well.
Anything Else that I need to add?Try reinstalling Snow Leopard. If you continue getting a kernel panic booting from the DVD, then either you have a bad installer disc or you have a hardware failure.
Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
Do the following:
1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with reinstalling OS X. Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files. After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/. -
How do you recompile the kernel for oracle linux 6.3
Hello,

I have some questions:
1. What public yum repositories contain the oracle linux 6.3 kernel source code ?
2. Is the oracle linux 6.3 kernel source code on OracleLinux-R6-U3-src-dvd1.iso or OracleLinux-R6-U3-src-dvd2.iso , can I use this to recompile a new kernel ?
3. Do you have the steps/commands needed to set options and compile a installable kernel[rpm] on oracle linux 6.3 x86_64.
4. What gui tools are available in the desktop to manage settings e.g sound/volume or to install additional gui utilities.
5. Is there some documentation help on using the oracle linux desktop ?. If so where is it located .
Thankyou

1. What public yum repositories contain the oracle linux 6.3 kernel source code ?None of them. The Oracle Linux kernel source code can be found here:
https://oss.oracle.com/ol6/SRPMS/
https://oss.oracle.com/ol6/SRPMS-updates/
And our git repositories are here:
https://oss.oracle.com/git/
The default kernel in OL6.3 is here:
https://oss.oracle.com/git/?p=linux-uek-2.6.39.git;a=summary
2. Is the oracle linux 6.3 kernel source code on OracleLinux-R6-U3-src-dvd1.iso or OracleLinux-R6-U3-src-dvd2.iso , can I use this to recompile a new kernel ?Actually, I have no idea which DVD the source code is on.
3. Do you have the steps/commands needed to set options and compile a installable kernel[rpm] on oracle linux 6.3 x86_64.No, you'd need to decide that for yourself. The kernel source is complex and can be very tricky to recompile.
4. What gui tools are available in the desktop to manage settings e.g sound/volume or to install additional gui utilities.Wow, topic shift. GNOME Control Center manages settings and installing new utilities is done by Pirut.
5. Is there some documentation help on using the oracle linux desktop ?. If so where is it located .Oracle Linux isn't intended to be used as a desktop. All the documentation is here:

Hi Avi, i'm quiet confuse if the release and distributions:
uname -a on my server show me 2.6.32-200.13.1.el5uek, that mean that it's a Entreprise Linux 5 ?
what the diff betwenn OEL5, OEL6 EL5UEK, EL6UEK, i'm lost.
Oracle Linux kernel appear as UEK ?
I just go to edelivery and found theses download :
1) Oracle Linux Release 6 Update 4 for x86_64 (64 Bit) V37084-01 3.5G
2) Oracle Linux Release 6 Update 4 Boot iso image for x86_64 (64 bit) V37088-01 197M
3) Oracle Linux Release 6 Update 4 UEK Boot ISO image for x86_64 (64 bit) V37090-01 196M
4) Oracle Linux Release 6 Update 4 source DVD 1 V37086-01 3.1G
5) Oracle Linux Release 6 Update 4 source DVD 2 V37087-01 1.9G
If I build a server with the 1) what will be the result of a uname -a ?
What the purpose of the number 2 and 3 ?
So many questions ....

what the diff betwenn OEL5, OEL6 EL5UEK, EL6UEK, i'm lost. There is no OEL, just OL. :) Oracle Linux 5 (OL5) and Oracle Linux 6 (OL6) are completely different major versions of Oracle Linux. Each of those has two kernels, the Red Hat Compatible Kernel (RHCK) or the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK).
Oracle Linux kernel appear as UEK ?Yes.
I just go to edelivery and found theses download :
1) Oracle Linux Release 6 Update 4 for x86_64 (64 Bit) V37084-01 3.5GThis is the complete install DVD, which includes both the RHCK and UEK as well as most of the packages available for OL6.
2) Oracle Linux Release 6 Update 4 Boot iso image for x86_64 (64 bit) V37088-01 197MThis is a small bootable image that uses the RHCK during install but only contains the installation program, but none of the packages. You need to have the contents of the ISO from (1) available somewhere on your network.
3) Oracle Linux Release 6 Update 4 UEK Boot ISO image for x86_64 (64 bit) V37090-01 196MThis is a small bootable image that uses the UEK Release 2 kernel during install but only contains the installation program, but none of the packages. You need to have the contents of the ISO from (1) available somewhere on your network. This image also has btrfs support during installation, something that (1) and (2) do not.
If I build a server with the 1) what will be the result of a uname -a ?The default kernel is 2.6.39-400.17.1.el6uek, but it will also install the RHCK 2.6.32-358.el6. -
How stable is Oracle Linux 4.5?
I have installed Oracle Linux kernel-smp-2.6.9-55.0.0.0.2.EL.
it crashes once a week. Does anyone else experience the same problem?
Upon install, installer automatically installed another kernel
kernel-hugemem-2.6.9-55.0.0.0.2.EL with only 2G of memory.
The machine runs 3 instances of Oracle 9.2.0.8 and they die from time to time also, without any error in alert log or system log.
Probably, machine is a junk, just reqular PC.
So, does anyone runs the combo for months without any problems?
Thanks.Hi,
No log data to analyze. As you mentioned that the machine just shipped with 2G memory. It must be experienced low memory pressure. You can set vm.lower_zone_protection=100 and monitor the machine.

Terry

T5120 with a linux Kernel embedded in firmware
I need to re-purpose a T5120 (i.e., reinstall Solaris 10 & selected apps), but in a previous life this box was apparently used as a SPARC based VM Manager; there is a small linux kernel which boots immediately upon connection to power (power button not pressed). I've found no way to interrupt or disable this process. Furthermore, after this firmware startup is complete, you're prompted for login credentials, which, of course, no one can remember.
Using a laptop with CentOS 6.3 and minicom to "tip" in.
I need to know what must be done to make this a "normal" T5120 one again.
TIAHello
What login credential are you requested for solaris OS or for ILOM?
If it is OS, then you can put the auto-boot to false using the ILOM

If they are ILOM password and you don't remember it, this docs could help

What is CIJScannerRegist? I've gotten two Kernel panics in the past 2 hrs
My Mac Pro has been stable for over 2 years now. I've just gotten two kernel panics in the last 2 hours, both related to a process called CIJScannerRegist. Who owns this process and what does it do? I did a ps aux on it and at least found where it is located:
$ ps aux | grep CIJScannerRegist

I still don't know what it does. Any help would be appreciated.

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: CIJScannerRegist
Message was edited by: rimcrazyOk.. I have one question answered but it brings up another. For anyone else that is having this issue, CIJScannerRegist is some daemon that is getting kicked off on boot. At the moment I don't know WHY it is getting started but I have found this. The application is located at: /Library/Image Capture/Support/LegacyDeviceDiscoveryHelpers/CIJScannerRegister . This is an app related to Canon All-In-One printers. I have a Canon Pixima MP800R Scanner/Printer. For some strange reason that escapes me all of the sudden this is causing Kernel Panics. I have a New MBP and an older Mac Pro. Both have SL 10.6.2 installed. Both have the Canon Driver installed. I found that both had an earlier version so I downloaded the latest driver from the Canon website. The one you want is the 45.3Mb file named mp800rosxns10ea7-3.dmg. This has the printer/scanner/network all rolled into one.
What is very curious is on boot my laptop (which does not kernel panic) boots but the process CIJScannerRegist does NOT start. On my desktop however I get the following two additional processes that are running:
$ ps aux | grep Image
phoppes 702 0.1 0.0 2435032 532 s000 R+ 8:46PM 0:00.01 grep Image
root 265 0.0 0.0 2456224 1688 ?? Ss 8:35PM 0:00.09 /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Resources/hdiejectd

phoppes 254 0.0 0.1 2774092 8360 ?? S 8:35PM 0:00.33 /System/Library/Image Capture/Support/Image Capture Extension.app/Contents/MacOS/Image Capture Extension -psn0110619
$ kill -9 257 254
$ ps aux | grep Image
root 265 0.0 0.0 2456224 1684 ?? Ss 8:35PM 0:00.10 /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/DiskImages.framework/Resources/hdiejectd

phoppes 717 0.0 0.0 2435032 484 s000 R+ 8:50PM 0:00.00 grep Image
You can see process 257 and 254 were started on boot. If I kill both process, I don't get a kernel panic. What I would like to know is what in blue blazes is starting the processes? If I go under System Pref's on BOTH machines, under Login Items there is the Canon IJ Network Scan Utility but only on my Mac Pro am I getting these additional two processes. I did a ps aux | grep Scan and I see the network Scan utility. That is a different process. Something is starting this CIJScannerRegist process. What I would like to do is simply fix that this process is getting started but I'm not sure where in the boot process that this is getting kicked in.
So for anyone else with this issue, the hack fix is do a ps aux | grep Image in a terminal window. Get the process ID of CIJScannerRegist and then do a kill -9 ID# where ID# is the process id you got from the first command. That will stop the kernel panics but still doesn't explain why they are getting started.
I will stop this thread and make a new post on the process as that is really a different question. -
Oracle Linux 6.6 w/ UEK3 boots to EL 2.6 kernel
I have just installed Oracle Linux 6.6 with the UEK3 kernel. Everything is up-to-date and the 3.8.13-68.el6uek.x86_64 kernel is set as the default boot kernel, but the machine always boots to 2.6.32-504.12.2.el6.x86_64, which is the specified crash kernel. I don't know why the 3.8 kernel is failing.
How can I debug this?
Thanks,
