Oracle Lite Performance Testing

Hi All,
Is there a way to sync more than one client from the same PC/Laptop to simulate a concurrent sync for performance testing purposes? Greg Rekuonas did mention, some script available by Oracle Support for the same. Oracle (on raising an SR) unfortunately says that they cannot make that available to customers.
I have found a way out, but it involves changing one of olite's dll's and was wondering if anyone else knew a better solution.(Other than finding 50-100 different laptop's/handhelds and make them all synchronize one by one).
Cheers,
Vikrant

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the reply. I will try and re-raise it with them, though they have closed my SR with a "Not Entitled" status.
In case anyone is interested I finally, got the trick done by using the following:-
1) Open ocapi.dll in your $MOBILE_HOME/bin folder. (Right where the msync_java.dll is there)
2) Open the above file in a text editor like EditPlus(Note this is a binary file)
3) Search for the string OracleLiteSync.
4) Change the string to something else(Do not add any characters, just change any one alphabet).
5) Save this file as ocapi.dll in a different directory.
I wrote a standard java program, to programatically trigger a synchronization. To, handle concurrent synchronizations, I create multiple copies of ocapi.dll with different strings for OracleLiteSync.
Each of my simulation "Clients"(Basically Java Threads) were invoked with a different path each pointing to a different ocapi.dll. This seemed to work, and the "Mutex" error went away.
The exaplanation is that basically OracleLite uses the Kernel32 API CreateMutexA to create a mutex to ensure that two synchroninzations cannot happen on the same machine. The mutex name is OracleLiteSync and the code is in ocapi.dll.
By changing the mutex name and using a different version of ocapi.dll (Oracle Lite uses JNI which reads DLL from the PATH environment variable) you can fool Oracle Lite into doing different synchronizations.
This did give me some errors when it tried to apply the downloaded changes simultaneously in different ODB's, but allowed me to load the mobile server concurrently with syncrhonization sessions.
Cheers,
Vikrant

• Oracle Lite Performance

I'm using Oracle Lite 10.3.0.1
I have a database of 16 Még.
When I synchronize with the force refresh option it take one hour for synchronization.
Is it normal ?

The time that it takes to do a sync, especially a new build/force refresh is mainly governed by a number of factors
1) the performance of your snapshot queries for the publication items. For force refreshes, therese are executed directly rather then using the out queue tables
2) the comms speed
3) the storage media the database is being created on
you can normally get some clue to where the bottleneck is by looking at the sync progress bars on the client
for a force refresh/new build, the composing and sending bars should fill up quite quickly
if the recieving bar takes a long time to complete then the problem is the snapshot performance or comms method (for 16 meg, my guess would be that is is the snapshots). run consperf on the publication items or you may get an idea by looking at the processing stats from the MGP process
If the recieving is not too bad, but the processing phase is the long one, then i would guess that
a) you are using a windows mobile device
b) the database is being created on a storage card
c) the storage card is very slow
slow storage cards are a major problem for small devices, but are the default on installation of oracle lite. Try editing the odbc file in orace to point to main storage for both database locations (or take out the SD card and delete the odbc file) and then try a sync. If this is significantly faster (seen a difference between 5 minutes using main storage vs 2 hours for SD card), then the card is the problem

What are the procedure to dp Oracle performance Testing???
Is there any tools to do Oracle database Performance or load testing??

Just i want check if 100 of users using my Application at a time what will be the performance of my database??Database performance is dependent on a number of factors - where application design, application code and data model, are critical components.
And these components need to be designed, written, and implemented with performance and scalability as primary requirements. From design issues like using 3NF correctly, to coding issues like using bind variables correctly.
You cannot simply slap design and code together, run that against the database, and then tune database performance. That is not the correct approach. Oracle database technology performs very well. It is the application that does not perform. It is the design that does not perform. It is the architecture that does not perform.
When I see the comment that someone wants to test database performance, I see someone not understanding what determines performance - and incorrectly thinking that the database is a black box, and that this black box's performance can be tuned and set, irrespective of the data model, application code and architecture used.

Can you post an example of "most of the correlation that is being referenced throughout the internet seemed to contain NCA functions"?
This was the link I was referring to http://martinspier.co.uk/how-to-script-oracle-11i-apps-on-loadrunner. I don't have the current knowledge in the differences between 11i at the intricate level but it seemed like when I accessed our 11i environment, the login portion is also http/https protocol. From what I noticed though that some of the oracle forms (i.e. payments module) have been converted to Webforms. So I was thinking from a login testing standpoint, the use of this tutorial would still be applicable. However, I just checked the Test Starter Kit Information Center (Note 239746.1) that Steven Chan provided and have downloaded their sample login script for 12.0.4. It seemed that they used the same multi NCA, WEB protocol but login information captured seemed to be capturing http requests only.
Thanks in advance Hussein and for anyone else who can chime in on this task. Any information would be greatly appreciated as I understand am new to not only Loadrunner but Oracle Financial Applications as well.

• Object performance, need detail of Oracle's internal performance testing

hi Geoff,
from your previous answer:
From an Oracle's comprehensive internal performance testing,
object implementation of an application consistently matches
those of relational implementation.
For some operations, using objects performed better. can you tell more about the result of the testing ?
we need to get the comparison between the two implementation,
in order to know in which case should use object implementation
and in which case should not.
thanks
Ray

Ray,
Before I name some cases that objects perform better, I still
want to emphasize that your application object model comes
first. Here are the cases:
1. If you have nested objects (e.g., customer with address
attribute), querying the nested objects would work faster than
relational access.
2. If you have containment objects (e.g., customer with VARRAY
of phone numbers), querying these contained objects would also
work faster than relational.
What is your application? What does your object model look like?
The more specific your question is, the better I can answer it.
Regards,
Geoff

• Bad Performance with Oracle Lite 4.0.1

I have a table in Oracle Lite with 17000 records and 110 fields. A SELECT on this table needs 1 minute to finish. The same table and query only needs 1 second on Oracle 8i Server. MSDE also needs 1 second. All the relevant fields are indexed. Are there any parameters in Oracle Lite that we can tweak? Is there something else I'm forgetting?

Hi Shivek,
An excellent solution for this is provided in the metalink Note:455905.1.

Hi Kamleshwar,
I don't think that Oracle has documented it anywhere (even other products also do not have such document). Please estimate your requirements (from performance perspective) and contact Oracle Support to get formal confirmation about whether Oracle B2B is capable of giving that much throughput. You may contact Oracle B2B IDC team as well.
We had performed a performance test (automated with mixed load) on Oracle B2B around 8 months before and we could easily get 5-6 MPS however Oracle B2B can be tuned to produce more throughput but that is for certain cases only.
Ramesh has given very useful tips to tune Oracle B2B -

• Oracle Lite vs. MobiLink DB synchronisation

Hi all

market. The analysis will play an important part in the decision for
which solution a quite big company will go for when building mobile
applications.

I am sure that some of you guys did the same analysis. May you can give

the analysis.
thx for any useful hints.

Michel,
Having an Oracle enterprise database is an important first step. It'd be harder to choose Oracle Lite over MobiLink if you also had to be convinced to switch to Oracle in the backend.
A second important comparison IMO is the client database and application development tools (prior to analyzing the synchronization technologies themselves). Both products only support their own client databases (MobiLink and SQL Anywhere/UltraLite or OLite Mobile Server and client database). I'd start by evaluating the client database in each case to ensure it matches with your requirements. Items to consider are:
- Target platform support
- Datatype requirements
- Footprint requirements
- Logic requirements
- Driver support
- other items important to you
I think another important item to review before evaluating the synchronization process itself is the tools involved for building and deploying your application. If the site that will build and deploy the application is already familiar with many Oracle tools such as App Server, OC4J, etc. they may find Oracle Lite a much more familiar environment to work within, which could be a sufficient benefit in time to develop and deploy the application.
In comparing synchronization, I think you'll find both tools have the same basic features. You might consider a few of these items to compare the technologies:
1) Performance - this might be hard to measure without planning and developing a few test scripts. For a full sync, the upload, apply, download phases in MobiLink are synchronous; each one relying on the completion of the prior to move on in the synchronization process. Oracle Lite's methodology is asynchronous. Your client modifications are uploaded/downloaded from a queue, which in turn works to apply and compose changes from and into the Oracle. This means your client is not forced to wait for upload transactions to commit to Oracle before it can continue with downloading its changes. On a small scale (numbers of users, small amount of data, infrequent transactions to Oracle), the difference in this methodoloy will not display much in terms of performance impact. If you plan to scale up or out, or are working with a very busy Oracle database, you'll find Oracle Lite's methodology will scale better.
2) Remote administration: It's worth checking into the functionality each product provides to remotely administer the client database. Consider basic use case scenarios now and in the future that might require remote administration and compare the tools each provides to accomplish.
3) Integration with Oracle: Mapping the differences for Oracle specific features (sequences, etc) is often important.
4) Consider how the two products handle an interruption of a user synchronization, which can be especially important if you are synchronizing large sets of data.
5) Check how to manage conflicts and errors in each product and see how that works for your particular use cases. The nuances and application of this is different for each product.
This should help you get started. I'll post some additional thoughts if they come to me.
HTH

The following procedure describes the steps required to deploy the DbAdapter.rar file using admin_client.jar:
1. Copy the following libraries from server.xml in an OC4J_SOA container to a server.xml file for a new
container:
oracle.bpel.common
apache.junit
oracle.db.lite
apache.commons
apache.jdom
apache.slide
For example, for oracle.bpel.common, copy the following extract from one server.xml to another and
do the same for all other libraries:

2. Restart the container to make sure that server.xml was updated correctly.
3. From the configtools.log file find the opmn port number, for example:
deployer:oc4j:opmn://dimak.au.oracle.com:6012/home
dimak.au.oracle.com - is the machine name and
6012 - port number
4. Launch a new command prompt
and set path and classpath, for example:
set PATH=$ORACLE_HOME\jdk\bin;%PATH%
set classpath=.
where in the classpath there is only one entry - the dot, which stands for the current directory.
5. change directory to the following:
$ORACLE_HOME\j2ee\home
and run the following command (written all on one line) to deploy the DbAdapter:
java -jar admin_client.jar deployer:oc4j:opmn://dimak.au.oracle.com:6012/test oc4jadmin
manager1 -deploy -file $ORACLE_HOME\integration\esb\lib\DBAdapter.rar -deploymentName
DbAdapter2 -parent default
where
* dimak.au.oracle.com should be substituted with your machine name
* 6012 should be substituted with your port which you found in step 3
* test is the name of the container you want to deploy the adapter to
* manager1 should be substituted with your oc4jadmin password
* $ORACLE_HOME\integration\esb\lib\DBAdapter.rar is the location of the DBAdapter.rar file
* deploymentName DbAdapter2 - should be different from DbAdapter, as that name is already used in the OC4J_SOA container.

• Log file sync top event during performance test -av 36ms

Hi,
During the performance test for our product before deployment into product i see "log file sync" on top with Avg wait (ms) being 36 which i feel is too high.

I am not able to figure out why "log file sync" is having such slow response.

• FORMS CRASHES (FRM-92101) ON AS 10.1.2.0.2 DURING LOAD PERFORMANCE TESTING

Hiya
We have been doing Load Performance Testing using testing tool QALoad on our Forms 10g application. After about 56 virtual users(sessions) have logged-in into our application, if a new user tries to log-in into our application, the Forms crashes. As soon as we encounter the FRM-92101 error, no more new forms session are able to start.
The Load Testing software start up each process very quickly, about every 10 seconds.
The very first form that appears is the login form of our application. So before the login screen appears, we get FRM-92101 error message.
However, those users who have already logged-in into our application, they are able to carry on their tasks.
We are using Application Server 10g 10.1.2.0.2. I have checked the status on Application Server through Oracle Enterprise Manager Console. The OC4J Instance is up and running. Also, server's configuration is pretty good. It is running on 2 CPUs (AMD Opteron 3GHz) and has 32GB of memory. The memory used by those 56 sessions is less than 3GB.
The Applicatin Server is running on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 64bit Enterprise Edition.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Cheers

Hi Shekhawat
In Windows Registry go to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\SubSystems
In the right hand side panel, you will find String Value as Windows. Now double click on it (Windows). In the pop up window you will see a string similar to the following one:
%SystemRoot%\system32\csrss.exe ObjectDirectory=\Windows SharedSection=1024,20480,768 Windows=On SubSystemType=Windows ServerDll=basesrv,1 ServerDll=winsrv:UserServerDllInitialization,3 ServerDll=winsrv:ConServerDllInitialization,2 ProfileControl=Off MaxRequestThreads=16
Now if you read it carefully in the above string, you will find this parameter
SharedSection=1024,20480,768
Here SharedSection specifies the system and desktop heaps using the following format:
SharedSection=xxxx,yyyy,zzzz
The default values are 1024,3072,512
All the values are in Kilobytes (KB)
xxxx = System-wide Heapsize. There is no need to modify this value.
yyyy = IO Desktop Heapsize. This is the heap for memory objects in the IO Desktop.
zzzz = Non-IO Desktop Heapsize. This is the heap for memory objects in the Non-IO Desktop.
On our server the values were as follows :
1024,20480,768
We changed the size of Non-IO desktop heapsize from 768 to 5112. With 5112 KB we managed to test our application for upto 495 virtual users.

• Password Probs - Oracle 8 Navigator & Oracle Lite Designer

I have read the thread entitled "Oracle Lite Designer -
password?", but none of the suggestions have worked.
Whether I try to run Oracle 8 Navigator or Oracle Lite Design,
at some point I get an alert box that prompts "Please provide
a database password?"
I have looked through numerous sources and find nothing on
this. Everything I try (that seems logical) for a password
fails.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
I have the following installed:
Windows 98
Oracle 8i Lite v4.0.0.1.0
Java 2 SDK, Standard Edition v1.2.2 for Windows 98/95/NT
Java HotSpot Performance Engine v1.0.1 for Window 98/95/NT
My PATH and CLASSPATH are set as follows in AUTOEXEC.BAT:
set CLASSPATH=C:\orawin95\LITE\CLASSES\OLITE40.JAR
PATH C:\jdk1.2.2\bin;C:\jdk1.2.2\jre\bin\hotspot;
C:\orawin95\bin;%PATH%

Hello,
I ran into that problem, too. My solution was to uninstall all
Sun Java parts (JDK and JRE) and reinstall JDK1.2.2
("jdk1_2_2-win.exe")from scratch. My CLASSPATH includes only the
standard classes you can find after a normal OLite4-Installation
(see OLite4 installation notes or send my an email). And check
your environment variables for references to old Java parts.
Now Lite Designer runs with POLITE.odb and my own databases and
yes - it is slow, but it is Java, so this should explain
everything.
What I do not know is where that password dialog came from.
Sometimes it reappears, but not in my own databases.
I hope that this will help you.
Bye
Martin Hanff.

• UTF8 support in Oracle Lite

I looks to me like Oracle Lite doesn't support the UTF8 character set for storing data. Is this correct?
I have an Oracle 8.1.7 database using UTF8 to store English, Thai, Chinese and Philippino data, and I want to synchronise that with Oracle Lite on Windows 2000 clients. The sync seems to work ok, but any non-english characters are lost in a characterset conversion (display as "?").
Regards
Steve

I'm a bit confused by your reply. Can Oracle Lite store data in a unicode characterset such as UTF8? It looks to me like the "UTF-8 support" is limited to the drivers, so that it can load and extract utf-8 data, but not store it. From section 2.2.1 of the release notes:
"Oracle Lite Database is NOT a NLS component. In order to reduce the kernel size, it is built for each language which supports native character sets for Windows. Which means, each language has each kernel. Here are the character sets supported by this release:
- Chinese: MS936 CodePage (Simplified Chinese GBK, ZHS)
- Taiwanese: MS950 CodePage (Traditional Chinese BIG5, ZHT)
- Japanese: MS932 CodePage (Japanese Shift-JIS, JA)
- Korean: MS949 CodePage (Korean, Ko)
The database kernel for each language in this list only supports its corresponding character set. Other multibyte character sets are not supported."
Also the documentation on the DBCharEncoding parameter you mention suggests that it only affects the UTF translation for java programs. Section A.2.3:
"... Specifies the UTF translation performed by Oracle Lite. If set to NATIVE, no UTF translation is performed. If set to UTF8, UTF translation is performed. If this parameter is not specified, the default is UTF8. This applies to Java programs only."
I've tried playing with these parameters, as well as changing the NLS_LANG parameter on the client, and for the mobile server, for the Oracle Lite home, all to no avail. I'm still losing the non-english data during synchronisation and it does look like it's being lost in a character set conversion rather than just being garbled, as each Thai characters is being replaced by the correct number of "?"s. As an example the Thai string "บริษัท บราเดอร์ คอมเมอร์เชี่ยล (ประเทศไทย) จำกัด" on the 8.1.7 database sever appears as "?????? ???????? ?????????????? (?????????) ?????" on the oracle lite database.
Am I missing something here? If I can get this data syncronising correctly then Oracle Lite looks like it will support all our requirments so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. (Should I post this to the globilization forum or does that focus only on Oracle's enterprise editions?)
BTW, thanks for the info on the sorting. Obviously the characterset issue is more a fundamental problem at this stage, but if we can fix this then it's good to know about the sorting abilities.

• Update statement in Oracle Lite

Hi
I'm having a problem when I do an Update on the database.
if I set a column which is a primary key in the table with the same value I get a foreign key error.
Ex: update company set company_id = 1 where company_id = 1;
in Oracle 8i there is no problem ,but when I run it in 8i Lite a get the foreign key error.
I appreciate any help

Is it necessary to update the entire record in Oracle Lite, or should it be possible to update select columns only when performing an update query?
Thanks,
Allen
