Oracle Lite vs Exress Edition

I am tasked with gathering information on comparing Lite to Express.
I have a great deal of information complied but wanted to throw this out to the community to see what people think. Any thoughts or comments pros/cons for each?

What are the business requirements? I can't think of too many situations where the two are interchangable.
Oracle Lite is designed for occasionally-connected clients (i.e. a mobile sales force) to be able to work offline and sync later with a master server.
Oracle Express is a free but unsupported version of the database server.
I suppose if you're building an application for occasionally-connected clients that you may be able to use Oracle Express, but you'd be writing piles of synchronization code among other drawbacks. Plus with the express edition you wouldn't have access to patchsets and the like which could be an issue particularly for this sort of application.

Oracle Lite Performance

I'm using Oracle Lite 10.3.0.1
I have a database of 16 Még.
When I synchronize with the force refresh option it take one hour for synchronization.
Is it normal ?

The time that it takes to do a sync, especially a new build/force refresh is mainly governed by a number of factors
1) the performance of your snapshot queries for the publication items. For force refreshes, therese are executed directly rather then using the out queue tables
2) the comms speed
3) the storage media the database is being created on
you can normally get some clue to where the bottleneck is by looking at the sync progress bars on the client
for a force refresh/new build, the composing and sending bars should fill up quite quickly
if the recieving bar takes a long time to complete then the problem is the snapshot performance or comms method (for 16 meg, my guess would be that is is the snapshots). run consperf on the publication items or you may get an idea by looking at the processing stats from the MGP process
If the recieving is not too bad, but the processing phase is the long one, then i would guess that
a) you are using a windows mobile device
b) the database is being created on a storage card
c) the storage card is very slow
slow storage cards are a major problem for small devices, but are the default on installation of oracle lite. Try editing the odbc file in orace to point to main storage for both database locations (or take out the SD card and delete the odbc file) and then try a sync. If this is significantly faster (seen a difference between 5 minutes using main storage vs 2 hours for SD card), then the card is the problem

Oracle lite application not showing blob images in BI reports

Hi,
We have an application running in Oracle lite, we integrated the BI publisher reports (PDF reports are generated Using Data template and RTF file with Java API for BI publisher) with the application. Its been working fine for a long time.
Now we are showing some images on the pdf report, the images are stored in the Oracle lite database as blobs. My application fails when translating the Data template to xml data. I am not getting any exception other than out of memory error after a while.
anybody had the same problem? Let me know if you need more information on this problem.

That was exactly* I was looking for. Maybe I should Google more in German ;-)
The main problem was that I defined my image outside the first repeating group (that doesn't repeat, it's always just one object) - the first group is followed by 7 more.
Just like the "Name" (that's positioned outside the group in the document header), I positioned the image above the table representing the group.
Doing that, the "Name" is filled correctly, the Image only when the Output Format is Excel or HTML - not Word or PDF ... makes no sense but that's tje way it is.
After moving the image inside the group....it works great!
(One more thing...the image size is fixed to the image you use as "dummy". Is there any way to make that more flexible, because now some scaling happens...)???
@Trent: That was the way we initially did it, but when the size of the row exceeds 32K...you know what happens.. And even with a small image the 32K limit is hit easily
The way I use it now (very similar to Carsten's description) there is no limit....

Password Probs - Oracle 8 Navigator & Oracle Lite Designer

I have read the thread entitled "Oracle Lite Designer -
password?", but none of the suggestions have worked.
Whether I try to run Oracle 8 Navigator or Oracle Lite Design,
at some point I get an alert box that prompts "Please provide
a database password?"
I have looked through numerous sources and find nothing on
this. Everything I try (that seems logical) for a password
fails.
Can anyone shed any light on this?

Hello,
I ran into that problem, too. My solution was to uninstall all
Sun Java parts (JDK and JRE) and reinstall JDK1.2.2
("jdk1_2_2-win.exe")from scratch. My CLASSPATH includes only the
standard classes you can find after a normal OLite4-Installation
(see OLite4 installation notes or send my an email). And check
your environment variables for references to old Java parts.
Now Lite Designer runs with POLITE.odb and my own databases and
yes - it is slow, but it is Java, so this should explain
everything.
What I do not know is where that password dialog came from.
Sometimes it reappears, but not in my own databases.

Trouble to connect to Oracle Lite with JDBC

I have installed Oracle Lite 9i on my PC (Win 2000 Pro). Then I connected an HP Jornada 525 (WinCE 3.0) and with
ActiveSync I installed the Oracle Mobile Client. Using MSql, I created some tables and did some data inserts - Oracle
is working fine on the Pocket PC. The next step was to create an Java application that will run on the Jornada to
connect to this database and edit its data. Here is the initial source code:

This works fine on my PC, but in the Pocket PC it gave me: java.sql.SQLException: Internal Error. This after I expanded
the jar files, 'cause before it tells me that ther is no oljdbc40 on the shared library path. I adjusted the classpath on the
registry, but i does not have any impact ... There is no file with name oljdbc40, only JARs olite40 and olitejdbc40. I installed
olitejdbcpj40.jar, and setting this library leads to the same error above.
What could be wrong? Do you have any tutorial or can you list all steps necessary to bring this working?

If you're attempting to use the ODBC API directly, have you downloaded the ODBC SDK from Microsoft? That will include some sample code, which is a great starting point. So far as I'm aware, you shouldn't need to configure anything in Borland C++ that you don't have to configure in any other C++ compiler to use ODBC.

UTF8 support in Oracle Lite

I looks to me like Oracle Lite doesn't support the UTF8 character set for storing data. Is this correct?
I have an Oracle 8.1.7 database using UTF8 to store English, Thai, Chinese and Philippino data, and I want to synchronise that with Oracle Lite on Windows 2000 clients. The sync seems to work ok, but any non-english characters are lost in a characterset conversion (display as "?").

I'm a bit confused by your reply. Can Oracle Lite store data in a unicode characterset such as UTF8? It looks to me like the "UTF-8 support" is limited to the drivers, so that it can load and extract utf-8 data, but not store it. From section 2.2.1 of the release notes:
"Oracle Lite Database is NOT a NLS component. In order to reduce the kernel size, it is built for each language which supports native character sets for Windows. Which means, each language has each kernel. Here are the character sets supported by this release:
- Chinese: MS936 CodePage (Simplified Chinese GBK, ZHS)
- Taiwanese: MS950 CodePage (Traditional Chinese BIG5, ZHT)
- Japanese: MS932 CodePage (Japanese Shift-JIS, JA)
- Korean: MS949 CodePage (Korean, Ko)
The database kernel for each language in this list only supports its corresponding character set. Other multibyte character sets are not supported."
Also the documentation on the DBCharEncoding parameter you mention suggests that it only affects the UTF translation for java programs. Section A.2.3:
"... Specifies the UTF translation performed by Oracle Lite. If set to NATIVE, no UTF translation is performed. If set to UTF8, UTF translation is performed. If this parameter is not specified, the default is UTF8. This applies to Java programs only."
I've tried playing with these parameters, as well as changing the NLS_LANG parameter on the client, and for the mobile server, for the Oracle Lite home, all to no avail. I'm still losing the non-english data during synchronisation and it does look like it's being lost in a character set conversion rather than just being garbled, as each Thai characters is being replaced by the correct number of "?"s. As an example the Thai string "บริษัท บราเดอร์ คอมเมอร์เชี่ยล (ประเทศไทย) จำกัด" on the 8.1.7 database sever appears as "?????? ???????? ?????????????? (?????????) ?????" on the oracle lite database.
Am I missing something here? If I can get this data syncronising correctly then Oracle Lite looks like it will support all our requirments so any assistance would be greatly appreciated. (Should I post this to the globilization forum or does that focus only on Oracle's enterprise editions?)
BTW, thanks for the info on the sorting. Obviously the characterset issue is more a fundamental problem at this stage, but if we can fix this then it's good to know about the sorting abilities.

I am working on a prototype between Oracle Lite and Oralce 8i database. I have managed to install oracle lite on PC and also manage the replication between the Oracle database and Oracle Lite database. I can also connect to the Oracle Lite database (It is a ODB file) through SQL plus. But I am having a few problems :
1) While connecting to Oracle Lite database I get a message
"Server not available or version too low for this feature" without any oracle error number. The versions are as follows : Oracle Open Client Adapter for ODBC 6.0.5.3.0

so how dow we create a database link between these 2 databases?

Error in Oracle Lite Database connection

I have installed the Oracle Application server 10.1.3.1.0 on my laptop (basic installation).
I tried to define a database connection in the JDeveloper connection navigator to the Oracle lite database. When I test the connection I got an error:
"Internal Error:Invalid Connect String".
I have defined in the connection tab of the Edit database connection in the following way:

Did you start the SOA suite on your workstation?
If so, can you reach the BPEL Console
if so, check via Enterprise Manager the connect string in the OC4J instance of BPEL (oc4j_soa -> administartion -> JDBC > conenctions, or data-sources.xml)
Copy the connect string into your OLite config if it works

Running a BC4J JSP application for Oracle Lite on OC4J

Hi,
My BC4J JSP application is working with Oracle and Oracle Lite on Apache (Oracle 8i Personal Edition) and on Tomcat 3.2. The same BC4J's could be used from the BC4J Tester as well.
But if I run the application on OC4J (standalone and embedded in JDeveloper 9i RC1 and RC2) using Oracle Lite, a Fatal Internal Error (or with JDK1.2 a NullPointerException) occurs.
I think I found the reason:
1. the Java Trigger in Oracle Lite and
2. the Timestamp used in Oracle Lite instead of Date.
My problem is, that I can't find any information about configuration of OC4J so that it could work with Oracle Lite as well as Apache and Tomcat.

The tell tale sign that the application is communicating with the running cache server is the membership information that is logged. In your previous running of the example you would have "members=1" embedded in the logging. From the sounds of what you are doing, you'd expect this to be different as the application would be joining a running instance. Check out section 1.3 of this doc on the system you are using.

How to into stall oracle Lite on Desktop

Hi I have oracle 8i personal edition installed in my desktop. When i try to install oracle Lite it is asking me for the default oracle home. If i enter oracle8i as default home it immediately gives an error "enter new oracle home" I want to connect to existing oracle 8i home,
How do i solve this probelm?

Cancel long running statement in Oracle Lite (OLITE_10.3.0.3.0 olite40.jar)

On JDBC statement, there is the method 'cancel' to instruct the database to cancel an executing statement. This works fine on Oracle server database, but not on Oracle lite database. The method call 'cancel' just blocks and the running statement is never interrupted.
The example I tried is very simple. There is a thread started which executes a long running statement. I noticed, that when moving the cursor forward by calling rs.next(), it just blocks. That would be ok, if the statement could be canceled from within the main thread by stmt.cancel. But this call blocks as well with no implact on the running statement. Why is that? Do I miss something or is it not possible to cancel a long running statements in Oracle Lite?

Unfortunately Oracle Lite doesn't have this option. You can call your statement from a second thread as you have done, but you won't be able to kill or cancel this operation. The only way to get fix this is by rebooting. You can use process explorer to find the dll process that is executing the SQL, but the tables will be locked and sync would be locked as well until the process is finished running in shared memory.

New Platform in Oracle Lite - Custom Installation

I read from the Oracle Lite documentation that the Oracle Lite setup can be customized. For trial I was able to modify the ppc60.inf and push my custom cab file, create a custom directory, install a cab file.
I would actually want to perform the same steps for my custom setup apart from using the same setup as I donot want to disturb that provided by Oracle Lite. I see from the documentation "5.2.2 Installing Standard SDK WinCE 5.0 CAB Files for Your Mobile Client" this can be achieved. I followed the steps in these.
I created an ini file and registered it with the server repository running the dmloader. I have placed my cab files and the inf file in the appropriate mobile server installation folders. This is my ini file content.

I got the new platform in the setup screen as Oracle MCP in the US section. But when I click it in a Win32 machine I get an error as "Access Denied: Oracle MCP;US Resource no found: WINCE_ARMV4I_US_OLITE_MCP" and on a WinCE machine the page navigates to an error page showing all the platforms available. I am not sure of the folders to be created for placing the setup.exe are correct, how do we get the setup.exe for the for the custom installation and if there are any other extra steps to be done.

Unable to Install oracle lite 10g mobile server on windows

Hi all,
Basically I am a .net developer, i want to explore Oracle Lite 10g mobile database.
for that I am trying to install Olite 10g Mobile server on my windows system it is installing upto 95%, after that nothing is happening. it is not giving any error message.
even i waited for 5 to 6 hours then also it is at the same stage.
In my sytem JDK 5.0 is there and Oracle Database 10g Express edition is also there.
Please help me on this issue.

i have seen that it says:
3.3.2 Certified Oracle RDBMS to Use With Oracle Database Lite
Use one of the following database versions with Oracle Database Lite: Oracle 9.2, Oracle 10g Release 1 (10.1.0), Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2.0), or Oracle 11g.
i dont know if the express edition is supported correctly.

Where is Oracle Lite DB installed? In Soa Suite inst. dir? Service needed?

As far as I know Soa Suite can use a separate "full" Oracle (Express) DB.
However user can omit this separate DB and use the built-in "Oracle lite" Database.
Is this Oracle lite DB installed in the installation directory of Soa Suite or somewhere else on the hard disc?
Does it need a Win service to run (similar to "full" Oracle DB) or does it run on-demand
in AppServer?

you can go from olite to full DB, but not the other way round. When you do this change you may lose state in your inflight messages.
to migrate from olite to Oracle DB do the following:
1.) Ensure that the new target database is running.
2.) Run IRCA script to create schemas for BPEL, ESB and OWSM in the new Database:
Eg: irca all "localhost 1521 v102" welcome -overwrite3.) Make a backup of the file:
${OC4J_HOME}\config\data-sources.xml4.) Change the following ESB and BPEL connection pools to point to new DB resource.
* BPELPM_CONNECTION_POOL
* ESBAQJMSPool
* ESBPool
You can use either Enterprise Manager Console to perform this changes or edit the file: ${OC4J_HOME}\config\data-sources.xml
Below is a sample of configuration for BPELPM_CONNECTION_POOL:

Oracle lite mobile cliet setup

hi
i have installed java 1.5 update 15 in windows xp service pack 2 system. Then installed Fresh client set up and data download of oracle lite 10g R3,after installing i got a shortcut in my deskstop of web-to-go.This web-to-go is not opening and showing an error "cannot display the content".
but i went to E:\mobileclient\bin in command prompt and typed "webtogo -d"... now it works but when i close the command prompt again my we-to-go is not working...then i started the service od webtogo. now it is working fine. what does the "webtogo -d" command is doing??? plz anyone tell me.....

currently only the client 5.0.2.10 database runs on Linux Advanced Server 3.0, but not sync tools. What runs on Lunix is the Mobile Server. In future releases the full Lite stack will run on Lunix.
