Oracle Olap Scaling Up

Hi
I would like to know any reviews, comments or experiences on Oracle OLAP scaling up.
Basically my client requirements are that we will have say 30-40 different data models.
Which means that I will have 30-40 different cubes , one or two for each model
Edited by: CelestialCitizen on Mar 29, 2011 11:41 PM

It really depends on a several factors. Hardware, database settings and complexity of the cubes, type of and concurrency of queries executed.
30-40 Cubes should work well in your environment if the hardware is sized appropriately and the database is tuned properly. Are you on Exadata?

  • OBIEE 11G   HOLAP( drill through)   from ORACLE OLAP  to  Relaltional table

    Hi Experts...
I have some idea that the drill through from an essbase cube to an relational cube can be possible with few limitations in OBIEE 10g. I am looking for the same feature with ORACLE OLAP option . I have OLAP cube built in 11g (leve5 - granularity to one of the dimension) , and relational has 7 levels. In OBIEE once drill down to the level 5 it has fetched data from OLAP , and going beyond to level 6 -7 then it should get the data from relational table.
Do anyone had gone through such solution, Please kndly share your inputs and documents which would be helpful.
    Thanks
    S

This is very easy. It's really no different from setting up OBIEE to drill from one table to another. Let's assume that you have your cube mapped in OBIEE using the OBIEE plug-in for Analytic Workspace Manager. Here is an outline of the steps:
    1. Add the dimension table and fact table to the OBIEE physical layer.
    2. Add the new level to the OBIEE dimension object in the business layer.
    3. Add the dimension table as a new logical table source to the existing dimension table in the business layer.
    4. Add the fact table as new table in the business layer.
    5. Define joins in the physical and business model as appropriate.
    6. Set set keys in the tables and the dimension as appropriate.
    7. Set the level for the new dimension table to the appropriate level in the dimension.
Again, it's really best to just think about this as drilling from one table to another.

  • How to create a link to base oracle olap express(ODBC DATA source Name)

    hello,
How can I create a datasource name, because I want to connect to Express base with Business Objects.
    thank you for your help

Express does not support ODBC access, it only supports a proprietary interface called SNAPI. There was a way to connect and pass data backwards and forwards using VB but that was about it. No ODBC connectivity.
If you want to access multi-dimensional data using Business Objects I would recommend upgrading from Express to Oracle OLAP 10gR2. There might be licensing issues here so I would talk to your Oracle account manager first because I am not sure customers can migrate from Express to Oracle OLAP for free.
Once you have moved your data from Express to OLAP 10gR2 (the steps to do this are all in the manual and it should be a painless process) then you can use a utility from Business Objects to create the required relational views over your OLAP cubes and dimensions. This will allow you to access your multi-dimensional data via BO's Webi client. I think the utility to create the views can be provided free of charge from BO, however, I think you need to have access to their support website to download it. But check with your BO account manager.
    Hope this helps

I followed the instructions in the document, but it did not seem to make a difference when
trying to follow the tutorial instructions and using the SALES measure.
However, I selected the stock price measures and it worked ok.
Is there a size limit here? I am looking at Oracle OLAP and BIBeans to replace our Cognos installation,

  • Cube in Oracle Olap 10g

    Hi,
We are planning to make a migration of an Existing Cube to Oracle Olap 10g.
Can anybody tell me the complete process to load a OLAP cube, Is it possible to load Cube data from a multi-dimensional variable ?
or, if anyone has a previous experience in this kind of migration and want to share expertice/advice/knoledge.
Where do I get Analitical Workspace Manager?
Is the cube managed like an object?
    Thanks

    Hi,
This is not the forum for Analytic Workspace Manager. I would suggest to try the oracle olap forum for your questions.

  • Whitepaper/Info Budgeting/Planning/Writeback via Oracle OLAP DML

    Hi,
does anyone know of any whitepaper, manual section, general information regarding writeback, planning, budgeting using Oracle OLAPs DML API? We would like to upgrade our proprietary DataAccess-Layer, which interfaces to Oracle OLAP via the DML-API, to allow writeback.
As said the documentation for this topic seems to be scarce to none.
Just to give an example: it is not possible to write back values to the base measures UNITS_CUBE_SALES/COST/UNITS of the UNITS_CUBE in global AW, since all of them are FORMULA objects. The underlying variable to which you can assign values is in 10g UNITS_CUBE_SALES_STORED, whereas in 11g you would limit the ALL_MEASURES_DIM object to the SALES measure and assign a value to a variable named UNITS_CUBE_STORED. Basically this is information I was fishing out of this forum, but didn't find documented in the Oracle manuals.
Therefor I am wondering, if writeback via the Oracle OLAP DML API is something, which is officially not supported? Or maybe I just didn't look in the right places to find documentation.
BTW: I am looking at this topic from an ISV point of view.
    Best regards

    hello,
    i can only speak about 10 G
There are 2 modes to attach an aw for writing data.
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/olap.102/b14346/dml_x_arcsin011.htm#i1016126
    1)In rw mode
Only one user can have an analytic workspace open in read/write at a time
    2)in multi mode
A workspace that is attached in multiwriter mode can be accessed simultaneously by several sessions
you find documentation for multi write

  • How to create a scenario in Oracle OLAP

    Hi,
I am new to Oracle OLAP.
I have a requirement where in we need two values 'Vs LY' and 'Vs Plan' which are scenarios to be placed in a dimension.
According to the scenario selected measure values should change.
    For example:
Vs LY and Vs Plan are values in scenario dimension and measure should have fomrula
case when Scenario.Member='Vs Plan' then Sales - Planned Sales
when  Scenario.Member='Vs LY' the Sales - LY Sales
    else
    Sales
    end
Could you please let me know how to achieve this scenario dimension.
    Thanks

Thank you all for your inputs.
If we need to have Foriegn Key for scenario dimension in the measure we will have to duplicate the measure data for each scenario.
If the number of scenarios increase the data increases in the fact table.
Is there any way we can avoid this duplication.

Excerpt from above Simba Technologies CEO blog*
One interesting thing we found from some of the Beta customers is that they thought this was an Excel only solution. Yes, we are focusing all the efforts for v1 on Excel, but this is planned to be a full blown MDX provider for Oracle OLAP*. Therefore, you will get the entire MDX query language and this interface will be similar to what you have with Microsoft Analysis Services or SAP Business Warehouse. Although v1 will be ODBO only, we are planning to support XMLA in future versions. The priorities for what we support and when will be customer driven. One question I have is after Excel, which MDX application do you think we should test with and support next:
    1. SAP Business Objects Crystal Reports
    2. SAP Business Objects Voyager
    3. MicroStrategy 9
    4. Microsoft Reporting Services
    5. Microsoft SharePoint BI
    6. IBM Cognos Business Intelligence 8
    7. Panorama NovaView
    .

Thanks very much for your response. Pls find the details as requested. You can reach me in [email protected]
    Environment Details
    - BO XI 3.1 SP4 Enterprise Premium (incl Voyager) on Win2008 R2 [Tomcat Flavour]
    - Oracle 11.2.0.1 Enterprise Edition with OLAP on AIX 6.1
    - Simbha MDXProviderForOracleOLAP v2.1.0.23 on Win2008 R2
Cubes are built using AWM 11.2.0.2A.
To be more specific, the issue occurs when we attempt put a filter on the dimension (or select members of the dimension) both in the existing workspaces or when we try to create a new workspace in Voyager. Attaching the screenshot of the error message.
Kindly let us know incase you would require further information. Also, if you would like to have a webex session where I can show the issue, I am happy to do the same.

  • Oracle OLAP and APEX

    Hi,
We have built reports in APEX using Oracle OLAP views. But these reports are very very slow as they query the views which in turn use TABLE and CUBE_TABLE functions to convert cube into two dimensional format of a table.
The cube contains 10 dimensions and 6 measures. Can you help us in answering the below question
Is using OLAP views the only way of accessing Oracle OLAP in APEX ? If yes can you suggest ways to speed up the access ?
We can access the cube very fast using data viewer in AWM.
    Thanks,
    RK

    This is the complete query
    SELECT
    SUM(TS.TOTAL_SUBMITTED)
    FROM EDW2.TOTAL_SUBMITTED_DS_VIEW TS ,
    EDW2.CUBE_DIM_CALENDAR_HIE_CAL_VIEW CA
    WHERE TS.CUBE_DIM_CALENDAR = CA.CALENDAR_DATE
    AND CA.LEVEL_NAME ='CALENDAR_DATE'
    AND TS.CUBE_DIM_SOURCE<>'ALL VENDORS'
    AND TS.CUBE_DIM_CAMPAIGN<>'ALL CAMPAIGNS'
    AND TS.CUBE_DIM_CLIENT_CONTRACT <> 'ALL CONTRACTS'
    AND TS.CUBE_DIM_VERTICAL <> 'ALL VERTICALS'
    AND TS.CUBE_DIM_PRODUCT <> 'ALL PRODUCTS'
    AND TS.CUBE_TIME_HOURS <> 'ALL HOURS'
    AND TS.CUBE_DIM_CHANNEL <> 'ALL CHANNELS'
    AND TS.CUBE_DIM_CLIENT <> 'ALL CLIENTS'
AND TS.CUBE_DIM_LEAD_TEMPLATES <> 'ALL LEAD TEMPLATES'
    AND CA.END_DATE >= '18-FEB-2013'
    AND CA.END_DATE < '19-FEB-2013'
After I included all dimensions in the query, the execution time reduced to 2.7 seconds. In the earlier query I included only 4 dimensions.
The cube is partitioned by Month, there is a partition for each month.
I did 70% precompute on the cube.
I also enabled the Materialized view refresh of the cube. Now the same query using the materialized executes in 0.2 seconds. Below is the query.
    SELECT
    SUM(TS.TOTAL_SUBMITTED)
    FROM EDW2.CB$TOTAL_SUBMITTED_DS TS
    WHERE CUBE_DIM_CALENDAR = 780
Now in APEX we will use the materialized view instead of cube view and check the performance.
I will paste the contents of CUBE_OPERATIONS_LOG table shortly.

  • OBIEE and Oracle OLAP Value Based Hierarchies

    Hi there...
I have a value based dimension built on Oracle OLAP and want to map it on OBIEE Administration tool.
I've been using the above link as reference:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/olap_biee/CreateBIEEMetadata.htm
There's no option to import from Oracle Multi-dimensional Database. Either to import/configure the view created by OLAP as an Unballanced or Ragged Dimension.
I also checked this example, but it uses ESSBASE as the multi-dimensional source....
    http://www.rittmanmead.com/2008/08/27/ragged-hierarchy-handling-in-obiee/
How to map this Ragged Dimension created in OLAP workspace in OBIEE? Any suggestions or directions will be highly appreciated...
    Thanks in advance
    Marcos

    Mark and others,
You can create OLAP_TABLE views with level columns on top of value-based hierarchies. BI Beans used to do that too behind the scenes in Discoverer Plus OLAP. If you trace the Discoverer session, where you are querying data from Value-based hierarchies, you will see that it also generates OLAP_TABLE views with level columns in it.
So the question is how to do it. Internally, even for Value-based hierarchies Oracle OLAP keeps track of the "depth" of each value by using a structure called GID_DIMENSION (i.e., Grouping Dimension). Here is an example of a view on top of a value-based hierarchy (CFC_ACCT_GAPP) for RPT_ACCOUNT dimension. You have to know how "deep" your value-based hierarchy is.
Similar kind of a thing is done by OLAP View Generator application, which I never use - since I always prefer to define my own OLAP_TABLE views.
This kind of a view can then be used in the RPD of OBIEE.

  • Are there any Oracle OLAP ODI Knowledge Modules for Oracle Olap 11g ?

Hi guys, wasnt sure where to post this so I put it here and the ODI forum
Does anybody know when Oracle OLAP Knowledge Modules, will be available for Oracle Olap 11g. It appears that the knowledge modules released with Oracle Data Integrator 10.1.3.5, currently only work with Oracle Olap 10g...
If there is no timeline, does anybody know of work around to get ODI reverses working on Analytical Workspaces built in Oracle Olap 11g
    Thank you

Raise a service request with Oracle Support (Metalink) for your system slow issue. May be, they will recommend you the workarounds for the issues which are not yet available for 11g in the form of Patches.

  • Making Business Intelligence Applications Smart with Oracle OLAP .

Business intelligence developers who want in-depth understanding and expert skill levels with OLAP will find that the book takes them significantly beyond product documentation and a wizard-based exposure to the technology. The book puts the reader on a learning path beginning with a definition and explanation of the benefits of OLAP, and ending with a comparison of multidimensional analysis techniques to other the analytical approaches used in business intelligence applications: data mining and statistics. On this path the reader learns the syntax and programming techniques, and discovers the information analysis principles that motivate its use.
The content of the book is based on the Oracle 10g database, however, most of the programming statements shown will work with other editions of the database, such as Oracle 9i and 11g, and even earlier editions of the technology found in stand-alone products such as the Express database, Oracle Financial Analyzer, and Oracle Sales Analyzer. So if you are developing business intelligence systems in Oracle or porting from one of these platforms this book gives you helpful information you will use to get the job done.
