Oracle PDK Java Portlet

Hello,
I am using jDeveloper 9.0.4 and currently have a stand-alone server. I create a new project, then create a Portlet using the Item Oracle PDK Java Portlet. The project is generated, however when I try to run the jsp to see the output, I receive a null pointer error.
There is a line that says:
PortletRenderRequest pReq = (PortletRenderRequest)request.getAttribute(HttpCommonConstants.PORTLET_RENDER_REQUEST);
String name = pReq.getUser().getName();
If I comment out these two lines I am able to view the jsp file. However, if I leave this as is and upload to the Oracle 10g Application Server, register the portlet, I am able to add this portlet to my pagegroup and it will show the username you are currently logged in as.
My question is how can I set up my jDeveloper so I can run this jsp without having to upload and register the portlet?
Thank you

Hello Kevin
However, if they enter a wrong password or username, will it bring up the screen indicating the wrong credentials were entered and the user needs to try again?
tug: To alert portal that the cedentials are wrong you have to raise an AuthenticationException that will show the "login message" in the portlet.
I am trying to figure out if this tutorial makes a url based external application or if this is a web based.
tug: in my example I am using the SSO External Application just to send the credential information to the portlet and the login mechanism is fully programmatic. (it is not related to URL based portlet.
Also, once you have created the java class, SQLProviderInstance were do you put it on the server?
tug: in my case I am creating a portlet from scratch, so it is a J2EE application deploys using WAR/EAR file.
The application I am trying to do this for is a web based authentication that has a username/password field, but also 5 hidden fields. I have sucessfully configured the application with external application, but I am having problems when I am trying to use a url based portlet.
tug: Please explain step by step how you have done the portlet. Also I will invite you to using the Web Clipping portlet instead of URL Portlet since it is browser based, easy to use and support also SSO External Application

  • PDK Java Portlet looses edit default values everytime I redeploy EAR

    Hello All,
    I have a PDK Java portlet (Portal - Oracle 10g). It works as expected perfectly till I redeploy my EAR. As soon as I redeploy EAR, it looses the settings that user had set using edit defaults link. Is there anyway to prevent this? Application runs on OC4J server.
    I urgently need solution to this problem and any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Kinnaree

    Just to be sure, you are registering the PDK producer with a WebCenter portal?
    Or are you just using the PDK provider in an oracle portal environment and you don't use webcenter?
    If you are using webcenter, can you also test this behavior in Oracle portal? Do you also loose the values in oracle portal or is it just in webcenter? This way we can see if it's a webcenter or portlet issue.
    If you loose the values on both the oracle portal and webcenter side, than it has something to do with the portlet. If they are working correctly in oracle portal, than it might be a bug in the PDK bridge in Webcenter.

  • PDK-Java portlets with WSRP provider

    Is it possible to have PDK-Java portlets deployed in a WSRP provider ?
    If yes, how?
    Thx a lot,
    Claudiu

    When PDK-Java was designed 4-5 years ago, there was no portlet standard on the horizon. While from an architecture point of view PDK-Java is very similar to WSRP, it uses a proprietary protocol. Therefore you can't expose PDK-Java portlets through WSRP.
    You can, however, leverage the BI-beans in JSR 168 portlets, just like in any other Java environment.

  • Problem Deploying Oracle PDK Portlet to Oracle Application Server 9.0.4.0

    I have a big issue trying to deploy a pdk portlet I have created in JDeveloper (10.1.2). The application is very simple, it consists of 2 JSP's (call them Select.jsp and Display.jsp) and 1 Java Class (Call it DoEverything.java).
    The architecture of the system is VERY simple. The Select.jsp is a simple drop down list that is embedded in an html form, with the options in the drop down populated by a method call from DoEverything.java. Once the user selects an option and hits submit, he is sent to the Display.jsp, which is a simple html table that is populated by another method call from DoEverything.java. (Basically the whole system is a simple "view" of a given table in a DB based on the option selected in Select.jsp).
    The system works perfect in JDeveloper, where I created it using the Oracle PDK Java Portlet wizard. However I'm running into a problem when I try and take it over to the Application Server. The main documentation I have been following is the: Oracle® Application Server Portal Developer's Guide and in particular the section 6.6.2.4.1 Creating a Connection to Oracle Application Server Containers for J2EE where it explains how to connect to the App. Server. The line "The steps that follow describe the procedure for deploying to a standalone instance of Oracle Application Server Containers for J2EE. For information about deploying to a full Oracle Application Server instance, please refer to the Oracle JDeveloper online Help system." is the one that is bothering me the most as I am trying to deploy to a full instance of the Oracle Application Server, but I cannot find anywhere that walks me through this in the online JDeveloper help.
    Anyway, currently we ftp the appropriate JSP's, Java Class, provider.xml and provider properties files to their respective directories on the Application Server, register the provider and reboot the Http Server. (This has worked before except for the fact that when the user selected an option from the Select.jsp and the request was then sent over to the Display.jsp based on the form action the Display.jsp wasn't recognized. We figured the provider.xml file needed to be edited in this case in order to know where Display.jsp was being kept). In any event nothing seems to be working at the moment and my main concern is that it maybe we should be deploying as EAR/WAR (both of which I'm not super familiar and my second main concern is that it seems most people use JavaBeans and Struts and all sorts of different API's whereas here I just have a fairly simple Java Class back end that connects to the database and creates an object based on the attributes contained in the database (1 object for 1 unique row in the DB) and I want to be sure that the way I have developed this should still work with the Oracle AS. I'm hoping its just a matter of getting the directory structure straightened out and editing the provider.xml file to include all the JSP's.
    Sorry for the long post, but if you could address my two main concerns and possible give me or point me towards a good thorough walk through of deploying a simple system (oracle pdk java portlet) like I have developed to the App. Server it would be greatly appreciated !
    Thanks a lot.

    Basically I started to develop this system inside Oracle AS and then when it came time to passing a request to a new page, it crapped out on me on the App. Server. So instead of trying to fix the problem there and then I continued to develop outside Portal and inside Jdeveloper. After a week or two once all my stuff worked perfectly I try and take it back into Portal but only the first JSP of all my Portlets would show up, because as soon as I would submit a form and the action directed me to a new page and Portal would be lost/confused. Obviously I shouldn't have done it that way but none the less...
    So now I'm reading through the documentation you pointed me towards and it seems I have to qualify my parameters and then "attach" them to the url which the form will pass to the actioned page. I'm importing numerous classes (...urlUtils, etc) in order to qualify the parameters and then build this url without affecting any parameters currently present that my portlet does not own.
    What I'm rambling towards here is all this separation of logic and presentation and the whole nine, implies different people can develop different parts of a 'system' mostly independant of one another...so in my situation I shouldn't in huge trouble yet, since underlying everything is a working system. My issue is with oracle and the App Server. If I take my code which works great outside of the App. Server and I fully qualify parameters and make sure my form actions are constructed using the UrlUtils in order to fully qualify them as well, and then I make sure page parameters are mapped to the proper portlet parameter values....should my system work on the App Server (assuming everything is done properly)....or am I still missing something.

    Can you specify which version of JDeveloper and which version of the portlet extension do you use?
    You need to make sure they match. Old extensions won't work on new JDev and vice versa.

  • PDK-Java Security manager: controlling portlet appearance in portlet list

    Hi,
    The Understanding PDK-Java Portlet Security article says: "Portlet security is handled at two main points in Oracle9iAS Portal. It is used when a user view the list of portlets available from a provider. It is also used when rendering the portlet on a portal page."
    I don't see how a portlet can control its appearance in the list of available portlets. Is the article inaccurate, or am I overlooking something?
    Thanks,
    Peter

    The article is correct.
    Before showing a portlet in the portlet repository, the provider is contacted by the portal to determine if the current user should be able to see the portlet. This is the isRunnable call.
    In release 3.0.9, a feature was added allowing a provider to instruct the portal to cache the results of this call. There are 2 portlet properties associated with this feature:
    <portlet>
    <callIsRunnable>true/false</callIsRunnable>
    <callGetPortlet>true/false</callGetPortlet>
    </portlet>
    The second property affects whether a call to get a portlet's metadata is made before displaying it in the portlet repository.

  • Set and read page parameter using a java portlet

    I created a portlet that takes a parameter. I wantt his parameter to be set by the admin in the page parameter section. The portlet that I crated has a parameter. In the providers it has the following:
    <inputParameter class="oracle.portal.provider.v2.DefaultParameterDefinition">
    <name>param</name>
    <displayName>displayParam</displayName>
    </inputParameter>
    However, when I go to the page propertie/parameter, I can "bind" a parameter. How can I do that?
    Thanks,
    Marcelo

    Marcelo,
    This was what I've given you above...
    From 7.1.3 Passing Parameters and Submitting Events jump to Section 2.12, "Public Portlet Parameters Support".
    Public portlet parameters:
    You can use a public portlet parameter to pass a value to a portlet. Using portlet parameters, the information that is displayed in a portlet can be specific to a particular page or a user. Portlet parameters are created by the portlet developer and are exposed to the page designer, through the user interface. After adding a portlet to a page, page designers can assign values to the public portlet parameters to make the information displayed in the portlet specific to the page.
    Page designers can assign values to public portlet parameters by providing a specific value (constant), a system variable (for example, the portal user name), or a page parameter. At run time, the portlet receives the values from the sources specified. In this way, page designers have complete control over the source of the parameter, whereas you have complete control over how the data is used after it is transmitted to the portlet.
    ...and in 7.1.3 Passing Parameters and Submitting Events as assumption is "You have followed through and understood Section 6.3.2, "Building PDK-Java Portlets".
    This why I've said to read it carefully... I hope this helps you further...
    Cheers,
    Pedro.

  • Deploying  Jave portlet on Oracle Application Server 10g

    I have installed Oracle 10g Application server, donwloaded and installed JDevleoper 9.0.5.1 and the latest Java Portal Development and as well as the JDeveloper portlet-addin. Now, I followed the instructions from the http://portalstudio.oracle.com/pls/ops/docs/FOLDER/COMMUNITY/PDK/ARTICLES/BUILD.JSR168.PORTLETS.USING.JAVA.PORTLET.WIZARD.9IJDEVELOPER.HTML
    On using JDeveloper addin wizrd to create a java portlet and so far so good. However, I am stuff on the last bit on deployment. http://myserver.uk.oracle.com:8888/my-portlet/portlets?WSDL

    Hi FormsEleven,
    When you say you can do this or you have done for demo then considering following directory structure if I have two forms having common form names how it will be resolved?
    Or how the url to access these forms will be?
    As shown in the following structure consider we have Form1 in sub directory1 as well as in sub-directory2 then how the link to access these forms will be?
    - Hosting Directory (formsweb.cfg entry)
      - Sub Directory1

  • OracleAS - NULL ProviderSession after 15 minutes (Using Oracle PDK Portlet)

    We have recently deployed an oracle pdk portlet java application (developed in JDeveloper 10.1.2.1) to an OC4J on a server running OracleAS 10g (9.0.4).
    We are currently facing issues where our ProviderSession becomes null after 15 minutes.
    In our jsp's we implement the following:
    PortletRenderRequest pReq = (PortletRenderRequest) request.getAttribute(HttpCommonConstants.PORTLET_RENDER_REQUEST);
    ProviderUser pUser = pReq.getUser();
    ProviderSession pSession = pUser.getSession(false); In our provider.xml file within our JDeveloper project/portlet we have set the following tag: <session>true</session>. In the provider itself, under the User/Session Information section, we have selected the User option, set the Login Frequency to Once Per Session and checked the box labeled 'Require portal user specific session information'.
    In our web.xml file within our JDeveloper project/portlet we have set the following tag: <session-config><session-timeout>35</session-timeout></session-config>
    As long as we stay within our portlet we don't seem to lose our ProviderSession, but after 15 minutes, if we try to access the portal page (to switch the language on the page for instance) the ProviderSession is null. This operation always works when we are under this 15 minute limit.
    We have tried to change opmn.xml (increasing OC4J start timeout from 900 seconds to 1200 seconds),
    modplsql conf (PlsqlIdleSessionCleanupInterval, changed from 15 to 30 minutes) and we have also tried disabling the Global Inactivity Timeout variables, but no luck as of yet.
    Any help would be much appreciated !
    Thanks

    HI
    i am also facing same problem with session but in simple portlet with ajax implementation.
    i am setting session in portlet jsp with following code using oracle application server portal 10g.
    (here portlet jsp means which is included from portlet.)
    session.setAttribute("map",map);(here session is implicit object )
    i want to call ajax jsp from portlet jsp with below code.(i.e setting session in portlet jsp and accessing in ajax jsp)
    var url = "<%=renderRequest.getContextPath()%>/AjaxProcessRequest.jsp?q=" + random;
    var pars = '&namespace=<portlet:namespace/>' +'&imagesPath=' + '<%=imagesPath%>';
    var myAjax = new Ajax.Updater(
    {success: 'emailbody'},
    url,
    method: 'get',
    parameters: pars,
    onFailure: reportError,
    evalScripts: true
    i am accessing map object from session in my AjaxProcessRequest.jsp as shown in below code.
    Map map=(Map)session.getAttribute("map"); (here session is implicit object )
    here map object is getting null from session.
    Please help on this if u know about this session.

  • Migration from JSR 168 to Oracle PDK Portlet

    Hi,
    I have created a Portlet in JSR standard. I want to port it as Oracle PDK portlet.
    In such case how to map the ProcessAction Method in MyPortlet which extends GenericPortlet to Oracle PDK Portlet format.
    Since Am using Oracle Portal 10g 10.1.2 which has no support to WSRP, am not able to use Java Portlet.

  • JDeveloper setup steps for pdk java and portlet container - ver 10.1.2

    Hi fellows,
    Can someone please point to some really not-confusing guide to setting up pdk java and portlet containers on jdeveloper 10.1.2.
    Problem is, I went through several documentation links and they keep pointing around to steps that are followed if you wish to have a stand-alone OC4J. JDeveloper 10.1.2 also had a preconfigured OC4J with it. I wish to make use of that and configure it for Oracle Portal editings for version 10.1.2.
    thank you for your help.

    I have some documentation that I tried following:
    For PDK-Java installation, here is the link to documentation.
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/middleware/ias/installing-089002.html
    However, what is confusing is what to do if you just wish to use the preconfigured OC4J container that comes with Jdeveloper 10.1.2.
    Experts, can you please clear this out please?
    Thanks!

    i have installed the pdk-java framework and samples and i have registred a poprtlet provider called " SampleWebProvider".
    when i open the portlet ripository i can't find this provider displayed

    It means while accessing this url
    http://servername.domain.com:7777/servlet/sample
    did u get this testpage... hello
    we have the SAME problem of Hela Abidi!!
    when we access the test page we get this:

    Congratulations! You have successfully reached your Provider's Test Page.

    Portlets are:

  • Building and Deploying Java Portlets

    I want to build a java portlet, the typical HelloworldApp.class. I've created the provider.xml file, the HelloWorldApp.class and I'm ready to deploy the provider. I follow the orders of the "How to build a Java Portlet" document. Then I go to the "Configuring OC4J" section where it says to refer tha article "Packaging and Deploying your provider". There, in the "Packaging your Provider" paragraph, says: 2. extract the template war file..." Where is that file?? Can anybody help. It's supposed to be an easy procedure. Isn't it? The same prosedure is followed to build a jsp portlet and a servlet portlet. Please help!!!

    hi
    template.war file is in pdk.zip.
    it is in the template.ear file. when you extract template.ear file you can see that.
    i waste very much time to find it.i understand that
    oracle help documents are so complex and not clear.
    there are many products versions.and there is no organization to productbased documentation.
    if you know how to create .war and .ear file in windows200 please announce me.
    best regards
