Oracle SQL*PLUS Log-In Problems
I installed Oracle 9i Standard Edition yesterday and I logged in fine with my sys and system username and password in Oracle SQL*PLUS.
Today when I type in the same username/password, it doesn't let me access the software and gives me "error 01033: Oracle initialization or shutdown in progress" and shuts down in three tries...
I am not sure why so...any help?
Like the error message says, the Oracle initialization is in progress. That means that it can't log you in because it is still busy starting up. If you try to logon three times before it is done starting up, it will exit the logon screen. Try waiting a while, perhaps a few minutes, before you try to logon. The slower your system is, the longer it may take to start up. For example, if you are using Windows on a PC, every time you start your computer, it starts your Oracle database along with everything else that is started automatically and, if you have a lot of stuff that loads on startup, it may take several minutes.

Oracle sql*plus encountered a problem and needs to be closed
hello all,
actually many times on internet i red that this is classic windows error, while looking for resolution to this error.....but there are many reasons specified......some says virus, some says multiple oracle homes, some says PATH environment variable....i searched net a lot for this error but no specific resolution found....
but i am almost unable to understand reason in my scenario...my set up is as follows:
OS:- windows XP SP2
database:- oracle database XE
other:- D2K6i (installed in its own home
environmental variable set :- PATH with D2K6i and oracle XE home
i alos tried setting ORACLE_HOME variable to XE oracle home but no luck
i tried almost all trick to resolve this issue, my sqlplus in oracle XE home is not opening ....it just blink and then disappear..when i type sqlplus in run dialog box it opens the sqlplus of D2K6i....and anti virus software is updated on that machine..
and when i tried to connect to XE on same machine..then it is generating this error with window and that useless "Don't send" window error....
what might be the reason???? i have tried almost all tricks....any other change need to be done??
any suggestion is appreciable???

with regards,
srinivas. When working with mixed environments you should make sure the path environment variable is consistent with the executables you are currently running, and try not to mix them, i.e. if you are working with the sqlplus from 9i, make sure you execute the sqlplus.exe file from the 9i oracle home and temporarily by means of a batch file put your Oracle Home 9i executables prior to those of 10g , and the other way around, when executing from the 10g make sure all executables and paths are consistent. It should be easier since when installing oracle, oracle configures the PATH environment variable so it can be seen first in the path environment variable.
In your case you are using two compatible versions, but if the dll's get mixed there could be unexpected results.

SQL PLUS log input and output to file
What is the way to log every activity in sqlplus, input and output to a file (interactively).
I managed to do it using rlwrap and tee but the only problem is, it is displaying the password and logging it into file as well :D. I can remove it from the logfile but am unable to prevent from showing the password.
I hope many might have wanted to do this, and some might have been succeeded. Please share your ideas!N:\tools>sqlplus siva

Sql*plus, instant client problems
I want to connect a linux machine x86 to a server with oracle 9i. So first I wanted to install instant client and I did as is said in the page for basic, sql*plus and SDK packages, but it doesn't work. When I executed ./sqlplus user/pass@connectionchannel in the linux machine, it crashes, without error message.
If I install the windows version and try the connection from a windows machine it works, so the oracle server is working, and there is no problem with the firewalls and so.
I have tried to execute fftrace (to have a kind of log of what programs does)fftrace ./sqlplus user/pass@conn and i saw a lot of lines I paste bellow. I think the last one is read from socket, but I'm not sure and i don't know what to do. I don't know if I can connect without the instant client. I will be very thankfull for any idea you can give me, i don't know what to try.

Cold u plz help me to fix this problem........on the sqlplusw gui you can not pass sys as sysdba as this option is available in OEM or other FRONTEND tools, wherein they inherently implement connect command.
Hope this helps ! -
I saw a question posted from someone on June 17 about logging into SQl Plus,, although it was for the 9i version and I wanted to know if it was the same user name, password, host string for Oracle 8i? The default settings you gave to (Bill)?
Thanks Marianne (newbie)Marianne,
The default username, password and host information has been the same through many, many versions of Oracle. The Oracle9i Release 2 version is slightly different in that you set the passwords for SYS and SYSTEM (no default passwords).

Sql plus password typing problem
Hello there
I'm trying to access sql plus 11g on windows 7, i correctly write the username but when i try to type the password, nothing is typed at all, not letters nor asteresks!!
plz help meeeC:\Users\lord>sqlplus / as sysdba SELECT * V$VERSION;

Use SQL*Plus to execute SQL, PL/SQL and SQL*Plus statements.
Usage 1: sqlplus -H | -V
-H Displays the SQL*Plus version and the
usage help.
-V Displays the SQL*Plus version.
Usage 2: sqlplus [ [<option>] [{logon | /nolog}] [<start>] ]
<option> is: [-C <version>] [-L] [-M "<options>"] [-R <level>] [-S]
-C <version> Sets the compatibility of affected commands to the
version specified by <version>. The version has
the form "x.y[.z]". For example, -C 10.2.0
-L Attempts to log on just once, instead of
reprompting on error.
-M "<options>" Sets automatic HTML markup of output. The options
have the form:
HTML ON [HEAD text] [BODY text] [TABLE text]
[ENTMAP {ON|OFF}] [SPOOL {ON|OFF}] [PRE[FORMAT] ON]
-R <level> Sets restricted mode to disable SQL*Plus commands
that interact with the file system. The level can
be 1, 2 or 3. The most restrictive is -R 3 which
disables all user commands interacting with the
file system.
-S Sets silent mode which suppresses the display of
the SQL*Plus banner, prompts, and echoing of
commands.
<logon> is: {<username>[<password>][@<connect_identifier>] | / }
[AS {SYSDBA | SYSOPER | SYSASM}] [EDITION=value]
Specifies the database account username, password and connect
identifier for the database connection. Without a connect
identifier, SQL*Plus connects to the default database.
The AS SYSDBA, AS SYSOPER and AS SYSASM options are database
administration privileges.
<connect_identifier> can be in the form of Net Service Name
or Easy Connect.
@[<net_service_name> | [/]Host[:Port]/<service_name>]
<net_service_name> is a simple name for a service that resolves
to a connect descriptor.
Example: Connect to database using Net Service Name and the
database net service name is ORCL.
sqlplus myusername/mypassword@ORCL
Host specifies the host name or IP address of the database
server computer.
Port specifies the listening port on the database server.
<service_name> specifies the service name of the database you
want to access.
Example: Connect to database using Easy Connect and the
Service name is ORCL.
sqlplus myusername/mypassword@Host/ORCL
The /NOLOG option starts SQL*Plus without connecting to a
database.
The EDITION specifies the value for Session Edition.
<start> is: @<URL>|<filename>[.<ext>] [<parameter> ...]
Runs the specified SQL*Plus script from a web server (URL) or the
local file system (filename.ext) with specified parameters that
will be assigned to substitution variables in the script.
When SQL*Plus starts, and after CONNECT commands, the site profile
(e.g. $ORACLE_HOME/sqlplus/admin/glogin.sql) and the user profile
(e.g. login.sql in the working directory) are run. The files may
contain SQL*Plus commands.
Refer to the SQL*Plus User's Guide and Reference for more information.

RavinderYou may want to check to see if the LISTENER is running. Often the administrator of a box can login without the listener running, but anyone else cannot.

Oracle SQL Plus software vs. PL/SQL Developer software
I am taking a class the used the SQL Plus to perform all the exercises in the book. Will I have any problem using the PL/SQL developer software that I currently use?
thank you in advance for any help offered on this thread..You may encounter difficulties if your course covers functionality provodided by SQL*Plus that are not available in PL/SQL Developer, however, generally speaking most things that can be done in SQL*Plus can also be done in PL/SQL Developer or SQL Developer or Toad.
That said when it comes to learning Oracle it's far better to stick with SQL*Plus and a text editor as it will force you to learn the syntax yourself rather than relying on your tool of choice.
