Oracle xml v2 parser collapses xml element nodes

Hi,
Whenever I pass load an XML document and parse it using the DOMParser object, it collapses empty XML elements. Eg, if my XML file has the following element:
<firstname></firstname>, once it passes through the parser, it becomes <firstname/>!
How can I prevent this from happening? Is there some setting that I can set to stop it?
Urgent response required.
thanks!
neelam

This is an incorrect statement.
Whether the incoming document had:
<x>
or
<x></x>
All that will be reflected in the DOM model is the presence of an "X" Element. An Element does not have a value in the DOM model (anyElement.getNodeValue() ALWAYS returns null). In either case, to associate a child text node with the "X" element, you would have to:
1) Construct a new Text node
2) Call appendChild() to append the child text node to the "X" element
There is no semantic difference, in other words, between <x> and <x></x>

• Retrieving a xml element/node as clob

New at this - so forgive the basic frustration here...
I have successfully loaded an XML file to be stored as Binary XML table in Oracle 11g. The XML file represents and describes data for use on websites, hence there is a vary large node representing the body text of an HTML page.
I have not attempted loading this XML file with an internal DTD or external xsd at this time, trying to keep things simple for now.
The following query results in an error
SELECT extractValue(value(c),'/article/article_body_page_html') article_body_page_html
FROM WEBSITE_CONTENT2 a,
TABLE(XMLSequence(Extract(object_value,'/website_content2'))) b,
TABLE(XMLSequence(Extract(value(b),'/website_content2/articles/article'))) c
WHERE extractValue(value(c),'/article/article_id') = '61041';
ERROR String result too large
I have tried XMLCAST(extractValue(value(c),'/article/article_body_page_html') AS CLOB) to no avail
It would seem I cannot be the first person running into this issue - and not being a PL/SQL or XML guru - I need some specific examples of retrieving a node/element where the data represented is:
1. Variable in length
2. Exists in the xml file as cdata
3. probably well over 4000 characters.
Could someone please help to provide a solution to what seems a very basic issue.
Thanks in advance.

From the 11.1 documentation on ExtractValue it has
"For documents based on XML schemas, if Oracle can infer the type of the return value, then a scalar value of the appropriate type is returned. Otherwise, the result is of type VARCHAR2. For documents that are not based on XML schemas, the return type is always VARCHAR2."
You should be able to use (not tested)
extract(value(c),'/article/article_body_page_html/text()').getClobVal()to get around this problem and ensure the extracted data is always treated as a clob by Oracle.

• ACL granularity on XML element

Hello,
when I store a XML in a XMLTYPE (column or table) can I define an ACL on a specific XML element(node)? How fine grained is the ACL restriction? on the whole XML document or even lower to elements and attributes? If it is fine grained to elements can someone provide an example?

As far as I know, it is top down...
In http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/oracle11g/pdf/xml-db-11g-whitepaper.pdf it is described as follows (the 11g extras):
ENHANCED ACL SECURITY
In Oracle Database 11g, the Oracle XML DB ACL-based security model has been enhanced in a number of ways, including the following:
• ACL Inheritance.
ACL inheritance simplifies the process of defining, managing, and enforcing a common set of security policies across all of the documents stored in Oracle XML DB Repository. These rules can be organization-wide policies or policies specific to certain types of documents. These rules are specified by creating one or more master ACLs. With ACL inheritance it is possible to ensure that all new ACLs must be based on an existing ACL. This ensures that the newly created ACL inherits all of security policies defined by the ACL it is derived from, ensuring that the policies defined by the parent ACL are enforced whenever the new ACL is used.
• DAV ACL Compliance.
The Oracle XML DB ACL model has been enhanced to provide more complete support for the DAV ACL specification. This will allow improved interaction with clients that provide support for the DAV ACL security model.
• User defined ACLs.
In Oracle Database 11g the set of permissions defined by Oracle XML DB can be extended to allow the ACL based security model to be used to secure other kinds of database object.
• Time-sensitive ACLs.
In Oracle Database 11g it is possible to create ACLs that enforce access control polices in a timesensitive manner. This can be used to automatically publish and then expire content, based on rules defined by the ACL.

• How to access XML elements by name in Extendscript??

I'm almost done the script that I've been working on, but something has been nagging me since I started. When I did start, I looked at the JS Tools Guide CS5 that comes with the extendscript ide to check how to access XML elements, children, attributes etc. It says this:
The XML object represents an XML element node in an XML tree. The topmost XML object for an XML file
represents the root node. It acts as a list, which contains additional XML objects for each element. These in
turn contain XML objects for their own member elements, and so on.
The child elements of an element tree are available as properties of the XML object for the parent. The
name of the property corresponds to the name of the element. Each property contains an array of XML
objects, each of which represents one element of the named type.
So basically it converts the XML into JSON. And you can access the properties like so:
<book category="COOKING">

The Boston Cooking-School Cookbook

<year>1896</year>
<price>49.99</price>
</book>
The Javascript statement bookstoreXML.book; returns the entire list of books.
The statement bookstoreXML.book[0]; returns the XML object for the first book.
The statement bookstoreXML.book[0].author; returns all authors of the first book.
A couple pages down it talks about Retrieving contained elements using children(), elements(), descendants().
So now I look through the XML Object properties and I see that I can use:
xmlObj.child (which) which A String, the element name, or a Number, a 0-based index into this node’s child array.
or
xmlObj.descendants ([name])
name Optional. A String, the element name to match. If not provided, matches all
elements.
or
xmlObj.elements (name);
name Optional. A String, the element name to match. If not provided, matches all
elements.
This is an excerpt of an XML I was working with:
<ROW xmlns="http://www.filemaker.com/fmpdsoresult"
MODID="16"
RECORDID="11128">
<Sign_Type>251.dr</Sign_Type>
<fm:Location xmlns:fm="http://www.filemaker.com/fmpdsoresult" xmlns="">5-5024</fm:Location>
<Line1>Zone

3
Patient Rooms
R532 - R436 even
Patient Rooms
R522 - R446 even
Xavier Elevators
Zone
Patient Rooms
R537 - 5757 odd
Main Elevators
Zone</Line1>
</ROW>
Extendscript will not give me an anything when I try to access elements by name. Instead I have to access by index, which works, but I'd rather search for names!
Actually the console log returns:
What am I doing wrong!?

First, those E4X XML objects are definitely no JSON (plain data) - they have a multitude of methods, even for tasks that would easily be implemented as property (e.g. the length() function), and they also bind xml element and attribute names onto the objects, allowing to target a multitude of XML nodes with a single statement. Or did you mean your script with that "it"?
Anyway, as you found out the ExtendScript XML object handles namespaces mostly by hiding them from you.
You could play around with global namespace settings, see the JavaScript tools guide.
You could also explicitly specify a namespace. This works for me:
$.writeln(myXML["fm:Location"]);
For simple use I had most success with a brute force approach that just strips the namespaces.
function removeAllNamespace(xml)
var ns =new Namespace();
var d=xml.descendants();
for (var i=0;i<d.length();i++)
d[i].setNamespace(ns);

• Getting oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLParseException: Start Of root Element

Hi All,
I am getting below error while creating STUB/Skeleton in Jdeveloper to call a web service from OAF Page But getting below error while trying to creating Stub/Skeleton to call weservice
ERROR:
oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLParseException: Start Of root Element
Any suggestion on This
P.S: I am calling a third party web service so can not able to make changes in XML
Regards,

Possibility is that there is a problem in the XML that is being passed. Can you double check with the third party software? Also check if you can try it outside OA Framework first and then if its tested you can integrate with EBS.

• Oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLParseException: Start of root element expected

Hi,
while trying to get a soapelement from xml file, i have the error : oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLParseException: Start of root element expected
the code i m using is as follow :
public static SOAPMessage XMLDocToSOAP(String soapBodyAsString ) throws SAXException, IOException,
SOAPException,
ParserConfigurationException {
SOAPMessage message = null;
DocumentBuilderFactory dbf = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
dbf.setNamespaceAware(true);
InputStream is = new ByteArrayInputStream(soapBodyAsString.getBytes());
Document doc = dbf.newDocumentBuilder().parse(is);
MessageFactory factory = MessageFactory.newInstance();
message = factory.createMessage();
message.saveChanges();
SOAPBodyElement element = message.getSOAPBody().addDocument(doc);
return message;
}

Looks like the XML you are passing is not valid. Check that the XML complies the the definition.
Also can you post a XML that works and the one that fails.
cheers

• Java.lang.ClassCastException: oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLText cannot be cast to org.w3c.dom.Element

Hello
I am getting java.lang.ClassCastException: oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLText cannot be cast to org.w3c.dom.Element error. This code is in java which is present in java embedding.
The SOA is parsing the xml in java code using oracle.xml.parser.v2 . This wont be a problem if the SOA uses default w3c DOM parser. How do i force SOA to use w3c DOM parser.
Is there any thing i can do with class loading?
Kindly help.
Regards
Sharat

Can you paste your java code here ? I assume, you must have tried type-casting.

• B2B-50029: B2B runtime error: oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLParseException: Start of root element expected.

Dear All,
I am a beginner to Oracle B2B.
I have created an agreement to Recieve 852, Product Activity data(POS) from one of the Trading partner. This is an inbound process.
A SOA composite application is created to Recieve the data and insert into perticular columns of the database table using database adapter.
I have tested the Interface with some couple of file and it went perfect without any error. Now I have to test the interface with some other files.
This time also I am not getting any error in Business Message, Wire message and Application message but the composite application is not picked.
The log file shows : B2B-50029: B2B runtime error: oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLParserException: Start of root element expected.
Please let me know if anyone has faced this issue. it will be of great help.
Thanks,
Abhas Kushwaha

Hello,
Just a thought, When I had the similar problem, it appeared to be a BOM (Byte order mark - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) in the xml file, which is the very first character in the xml file, so the file was not identified to be a valid xml file. Removing the BOM from the xml file fixed my problem, however, I did not spend much time in fixing using B2B, the vendor (sender of the file) fixed the file and started sending without BOM. So my work was easier.
The character is not visible in all XML editors, however, it was visible in JDeveloper. I used a tool to identify and remove during testing until the vendor fixed the file, the tool is called file bom detector,http://www.bryntyounce.com/filebomdetector.htm
Hope this helps,
Thanks,

• Why can't Oracle XML parser import a Xerces node?

I have been using XSU to obtain query results in XML as a DOM. Recently I tried to use the Document.importNode method on the generated DOM where the node to be imported was generated using the Xerces parser. The Oracle XML parser gave the following error:
java.lang.ClassCastException: org.apache.xerces.dom.DeferredElementImpl
org.w3c.dom.Node oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLDocument.importNode(org.w3c.dom.Node, boolean)
XMLDocument.java:1247
I can get around the problem by parsing the XML I want to combine with the XSU generated XML with the Oracle parser, however, I would be happier if I could configure XSU to use Xerces (or another parser) via JAXP.
Will XSU have JAXP support? What is the cause of the exception above?

That is why you can't import.

• Why the oracle XML parser "parses" the DTD comments?

Hi all,
I always use the header

to be able to use foreign characters in the XML documents.
The oracle xml parser handles this correctly.
My problem is, when I write comments inside the DTD, the
parser reports "Invalid UTF8 encoding".
Why the parser "parse" the comments? (protected by )
How do I say that the DTD encoding is different from UTF, like
ISO-8859-1?
Example of a correct DTD and corresponding XML, reporting
problems, related to the 2nd comment in the DTD specification,
written with ISO-8859-1 characters.
The DTD:

<!ELEMENT valid ( B, C ) >

<!ELEMENT B (#PCDATA) >
<!ELEMENT C (#PCDATA) >
The XML:

<valid>
How are you, Conceigco
<C>I'm fine, thank you.</C>
</valid>
The parser output:
[jgr@frontera test-dtd]$ java oracle.xml.parser.v2.oraxml -v
valid.xml
Error while parsing input sourcevalid.xml(Invalid UTF8 encoding.)
Thank you for any help.

I was wrong in saying that the attributes are not added to the element.My main aim is to add a array of elements to the root node.
Is there a efficient manner in adding the elements , rather than adding them individually with the help of appendChild method.
Thanks in advance.

• IOException thrown in oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLElement.readExternal() method

Hi,
I have a bpel process which takes in a particular xml format and does some processing asynchronously. I am calling this bpel process from a web application which uses axis web service to call this application.
Everything works fine when the xml is small (around 10 to 15 kb). But once the xml gets huge(around 250 to 400 kb) error is thrown in bpel in the oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLElement.readExternal() method. It seems like bpel is not able to reconstruct the object that it had written to some stream before. I learnt from some forum posts that this done for optimizing performance but I would like to know whether i have to tweak something here.
Particularly what does this "java.io.IOException: Error in reading Namespace associated with the node" mean. Below is the error log

Exception: ORABPEL-09222

I finally found the root cause of the solution. We are using axis serialization/deserialization at the client end to call the bpel service which works well for small xml. But mysteriously for larger xmls the deserialization fails at the server end when the incoming xml is being used. So we used the regular oracle java api to call the web service. This solved the problem.
We could not find whether the problem lies with Oracle SOA suite 10.1.3.1 or Apache axis 2.0. But as of now these two seem to be incompatible for large xmls at the moment.
Any pointers are welcome!

• Bpel-108-UsingXQuery $publisher - oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLElement@8b8e58

Hello,
I am using Oracle SOA Suite 11.1.1.4.0 While executing the XQuery example bpel-108-UsingXQuery I am facing the following problem/error.
The Xquery in the example is:
xquery version "1.0";
declare namespace ns0 = "http://example.com/bpel/books";
declare namespace ns1 = "http://samples.otn.com/xquerysample";
declare variable $category as node() external;
declare variable $publisher as xs:string external;
<bookReport>
for $b in //ns0:BOOKS/ns0:ITEM
where data($b/ns0:PUBLISHER) = $publisher
order by string-length($b/TITLE) return
<book>

{ data($b/ns0:TITLE) }

<price>{ data(doc("pricelist.xml")/ns1:pricelist/ns1:product[1]/ns1:price) }</price>
<publisher>{ $publisher }</publisher>
{ $category }
</book>
</bookReport>
The variable $publisher, declared in 'declare variable $publisher as xs:string external' shall have the value 'Associated Press' as this has been assigned in the BPEL but it has in fact the value 'oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLElement@8b8e58'.
The variable $category has the correct value.
What is here wrong or is it a bug in 11.1.1.4.0 in the oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLElement class.

What a mess:
org.w3c.Element element = (org.w3c.Element) payload.get("payload");
private Document writeOraXMLtoDocument(org.w3c.Element payload) throws ParserConfigurationException, SAXException, IOException, TransformerException{
ByteArrayInputStream inputStream = new ByteArrayInputStream(writeXMLToStream(new DOMSource(payload)).toByteArray());
DocumentBuilderFactory factory = DocumentBuilderFactory.newInstance();
DocumentBuilder builder =factory.newDocumentBuilder();
return builder.parse(inputStream);
private ByteArrayOutputStream writeXMLToStream(Source source) throws TransformerException {
ByteArrayOutputStream out = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
// Prepare the output file
Result result = new StreamResult(out);
// Write the DOM document to the file
TransformerFactory x = TransformerFactory.newInstance();
Transformer xformer = x.newTransformer();
xformer.transform(source, result);
return out;
Note, that you have to use the oracle transformer located in the xmlparserv2.jar
if it is not your default transformer , you have to set it at least for the above code by System.setProperty("javax.xml.transform.TransformerFactory","..classname...");

• ANN: Oracle XML Parser for Java v2.0.0.1

A new maintenance release of the Oracle Parser for Java is
available for download. It has the following fixes and changes:
Bug fixes for #920536, i.e. Cannot access element attributes via
XSLT; #898423. i.e. ElementDecl's in DTDs; #774774, i.e. DOM
extensions using XSL pattern matching; #863890 i.e. SAX
IOException not thrown.
New APIs in the following new interface:
1. oracle.xml.parser.v2.NSResolver
- resolveNamespacePrefix( find the namespace definition in scope
for a given namespace prefix )
New APIs in the following classes:
1. oracle.xml.parser.v2.XMLNode
- selectNodes( Selects nodes from the tree which match the given
pattern; client can provide an NSResolver implementation to
resolve namespace prefixes in the pattern ).
2. oracle.xml.parser.v2.ElementDecl
- getParseTree( Returns the root Node of Content Model parse
tree, which could then be traversed node by node using
getFirstChild() and getLastChild(). The Node types are: PLUS,
COMMA, ASTERISK, ELEMENT, QMARK ).
This is the first beta patch release for v2.

do i still need to do that step?No, you do not have to since "XML Parser for Java v9.0.4" is already installed as part of appsborg2.zip

• Problem for using oracle xml parser v2 for 8.1.7

My first posting was messed up. This is re-posting the same question.
Problem for using oracle xml parser v2 for 8.1.7
I have a sylesheet with
<xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/TR/WD-xsl">.
It works fine if I refer this xsl file in xml file as follows:
.
When I use this xsl in pl/sql package, I got
ORA-20100: Error occurred while processing: XSL-1009: Attribute 'xsl:version' not found in 'xsl:stylesheet'.
After I changed name space definition to
<xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform" version="1.0"> in xsl file, I got
ORA-20100: Error occurred while processing: XSL-1019: Expected ']' instead of '$'.
I am using xml parser v2 for 8.1.7
Can anyone explain why it happens? What is the solution?

Steve,
We are also creating an XML DOM from java and are having trouble getting the tags created as we want. When we use XMLText it creates the tag as <tagName/>value rather than <tagName>value</tagName>. We want separate open and close tags. Any ideas?
