Oratab changes in 11.2

Hello experts!
I'm using my oratab file for various monitoring purposes and databases monitored are having 'Y' in oratab while those i dont want to monitor are having 'N'.
On my RAC 11.2 env, it seems that my oratab file is updated automatically whenever bouncing a database. So it automatically changes it back to 'N' and appends a line as follows:
clone:/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1:N             # line added by AgentTried searching MOS and google but cannot find anything about this.
Does anyone know if it's possible to turn off this feature?
Thank you for your time!

Interesting...
I suggest that you post this in the ClsuterWare forum : Real Application Clusters
or the RAC forum : Real Application Clusters

  • 9ir2 on SuSE8.1Prof works!

    Hi,
    For someone who is still struggling: (1) install orarun9i.rpm from www.suse.de (or .com whatever); (2)follow this "http://www.suse.com/en/business/certifications/certified_software/oracle/docs/920_sles7_install.pdf"; (3) create a symbolic link, for example like this: ln -s /opt/oracle/admin/mydb/pfile/initmydb1234.ora /opt/oracle/product/9ir2/db/initmydb.ora; (4) edit /etc/oratab changing the two entries in "y" instead of "n"; than /etc/sysconfig/oracle adding "Yes" for example to START_DB_SERVER="YES", intelligent agent, apache, apache with SSL, for the rest I don't know; (6)as root enter the commands "init 1" then "init 5" for starting all the processes again (without rebooting, no need). Good luck!
    P.S.: Have a look at "http://lists.suse.com/archive/suse-oracle/2003-Aug/0063.html" and the rest in thread. It's funny and usefull!

    Sorry,
    I got an error! In the path for the symbolic link it's .../product/9ir2/dbs/... not only db.

  • Can't change /etc/oratab file or automatic startup problem on linux!!!

    Hi friends,
    I have installed an Oracle 11.2.0.1 on Oracle Linux Server 5.11(Virtualbox). I have the users grid and oracle11g. Add groups and install grid infrastructure first as a grid user and install database as oracle user as in documentation successfully.
    I have following users and groups as
    [grid@orcl11g ~]$ id grid
       uid=501(grid) gid=502(oinstall) groups=502(oinstall),492(vboxsf),501(grid),503(dba),505(asmdba),506(asmadmin),507(asmoper)
    [grid@orcl11g ~]$ id oracle11g

    When I log on as grid user. I check the followings:
    [grid@orcl11g ~]$ crsctl check has
    CRS-4638: Oracle High Availability Services is online
    [grid@orcl11g ~]$ srvctl status database -d ora11g

    When I edit /etc/oratab file; change N to Y for +ASM and restart the system, then it seems value N is not changed to Y. But changed for database as shown below.
         +ASM:/u01/app/grid/product/11.2.0/grid:N   # line added by Agent
         ora11g:/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1:Y
    QUESTIONS!!!!!
    1. When I edit /etc/oratab file manually why second row saved (changed N to Y manually) but the first row become unsaved (although changed N to Y) again after restarting the system?
    2. After restarting the system database and ASM started automatically, although the line is not changed to Y above (in oratab file) for ASM. What is the reason and how can I change to Y? Or if I have to change the N to Y or not?
    3. Is it enough to edit N to Y in oratab file for ASM and database to start ASM and database automatically? I think there will be some other scripts have to be created in /etc/init.d/ directory for automatic startup.
    PLEASE HELP ME TO UNDERSTAND THIS PROBLEM CLEARLY!!!!
    Thanks!!!

    Thanks for reply ZeDBA,
    I don't want to prevent auto starting. As 2769577 stated above that
        "...You may not need to edit in oratab since it's automatically taken care by HAS in 11g..."
    It is meaningful and perhaps it is the exact reason or solution.
    Question is that, why I can't edit oratab file manually for ASM row? ' Not need ' and ' can't ' is different!!
    # The first and second fields are the system identifier and home
    # directory of the database respectively.  The third filed indicates
    # to the dbstart utility that the database should , "Y", or should not,
    # "N", be brought up at system boot time.
    # Multiple entries with the same $ORACLE_SID are not allowed.
    +ASM:/u01/app/grid/product/11.2.0/grhome_1:N        # line added by Agent
    ora11g:/u01/app/oracle11g/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1:Y
    If we assume the 2769577's answer is exactly correct, reason or solution. Then it means that the row "..
    +ASM:/u01/app/grid/product/11.2.0/grhome_1:N
    # line added by Agent
    in oratab file is meaningless and unnecessary if HAS process enabled and automatically start the ASM.
    Please clarify it, If I am wrong?
    Thanks!!!

    Hi All,
    We changed the below entries in oratab in AIX server,
    orcl:/oracle/Ora10g:Y
    even after changing this above entries on oratab oracle DB and listener services are not starting in the AIX server, have any pupils come across this scenario, need your help on this...

    The line was like
    orcl:/oracle/Ora10g:N
    we changed to
    orcl:/oracle/Ora10g:Y
    I am sure the Oracle SID and ORACLE HOME is correct...
    this works fine in sun solaris and Linux machine i don't know why this is not working in AIX,

  • Question on Oratab file when installing two Oracle instances in one machine

    OS: AIX 5.3
    DB version:10.2.0.1.0
    I already have an instance of version 9.2 which is very important and which we don't want to upgrade and we wanted another test(unimportant) oracle instance called testdb_10gR2 of version 10.2.0.1.0 on the same machine.
    So i installed 10.2.0.1.0 on a different ORACLE_HOME .Installation of the new 10.2.0.1.0 (testdb_10gR2) went ahead successfully and at the last step i have to log in as root and execute root.sh
    I entered 'n' for the options "dbhome", "oraenv", "coraenv" as shown below so that the settings for our 9.2 instance (which is very important) will remain intact.
    What would have happened if i entered 'y' ie. Overwrite ?
    The following environment variables are set as:
        ORACLE_OWNER= oracle
        ORACLE_HOME=  /u04/testdb_10gR2_Feb2009
    Enter the full pathname of the local bin directory: [/usr/local/bin]: /usr/local/bin
    The file "dbhome" already exists in /usr/local/bin.  Overwrite it? (y/n) [n]: n
    The file "oraenv" already exists in /usr/local/bin.  Overwrite it? (y/n) [n]: n
    The file "coraenv" already exists in /usr/local/bin.  Overwrite it? (y/n) [n]: n
    Entries will be added to the /etc/oratab file as needed by
    Database Configuration Assistant when a database is created
    Finished running generic part of root.sh script.
    Now product-specific root actions will be performed.
    During installEdited by: Citizen_2 on Jan 30, 2009 5:05 AM

    'dbhome','oraenv','coraenv' are sripts used to set a proper environment (see the descriptions at the beginning of these scripts). These scripts rely on oratab (they check for existing SIDs), but answering 'Y' does not mean you will modifiy an existing oratab.
    I think these scripts change rarely, so it's very likely overwriting the existing 9i scripts with the 10g scripts changes nothing. To be honest I don't use the scripts , so in my case 'Y' or 'N' doesn't matter. But important is you don't have to worry about 'oratab'.

    Sorry I don't want to simply post my script here at OTN. I spent several months working on it and put a lot of thoughts into. I may at some time in the future share it, but it will have to be under different circumstances.
    But This will not work as i need to source both SID and HOME
    Why not? Simply query the appropriate information. SID and HOME are both stored in /etc/oratab. You simply need to fetch or search the appropriate column and return $1 or $2 from the line, which contain the SID or HOME information.
    Get SID and HOME for +ASM:
    $ var=`awk -F':' '$1 ~ /+ASM/ { print $1,$2 }' /etc/oratab`
    $ echo $var
    +ASM /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/grid
    Convert result into a variable array using space as delimeter and export each value:
    $ var=(${var// / })
    $ export a1=`echo ${var[0]}`
    $ export a2=`echo ${var[1]}`
    $ echo $a1
    +ASM
    $ echo $a2
    /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/grid
    If you want to do this for other ASM instances, simply specify the instance name. You can also write a procedure to walk through a list of possible search strings using "for item in "ASM+ ASM1+ ASM2+" do; etc.", if you want to get fancy.

  • Can't Change Drobo-FS File Permissions

    Hi
    About a week ago I bought a Drobo-FS and moved my rather large iTunes Library to it. The problem now is my file permissions on the iTunes folder. It says I have "Custom" access and won't let me change anything. Consequently I am having trouble backing up files.
    I am using Lion on a relatively new iMac and Drobo-FS is connected via ethernet through my Time Machine.
    Can anyone tell me how to correct this? I am not very knowledgeable on this subject so any advice please treat me as if I was a 10 year old.
    Thanks

  • RAC + oratab + sqlplus

    This one should be simple, I'v searched online and just can't seem to find a solid answer for this.
    After installing a database with dbca on a 2 node Rac cluster, (db_name = SEED, instances = SEED1, SEED2), I'm left with this in /etc/oratab
    SEED:/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/devdb_1:N
    I have a net service entry setup with a name of SEED that is load balanced between the two, and then 2 individual service names SEED1, and SEED2 that go to the specific instances.
    I modified /usr/local/bin/oratab to include this at the bottom.
    TWO_TASK=$ORACLE_SID
    I'm running this on RHEL 4.6 (64-bit)
    My understanding was that if I set the TWO_TASK variable, then sqlplus would treat the statement 'sqlplus / as sysdba' the same as 'sqlplus sys/password@SEED as sysdba
    But I get the following.
    [oracle@node-name ~]$ . oraenv
    ORACLE_SID = [SEED] ? SEED
    [oracle@node-name ~]$ echo $TWO_TASK
    SEED
    [oracle@node-name ~]$ echo $LOCAL
    SEED
    [oracle@node-name ~]$ echo $ORACLE_SID
    SEED
    [oracle@node-name ~]$ echo $ORACLE_HOME
    /u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/devdb_1
    [oracle@node-name ~]$ sqlplus / as sysdba

    SQL>
    When running 'sqlplus sys/password@SEED as sysdba' works correctly.
    If I change ORACLE_SID=SEED1, then 'sqlplus / as sysdba' will work correctly.
    I know how to make this work, but I'm not sure what the best practice is here. Should add the following to /etc/oratab, for each instance
    SEED1:/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/devdb_1:N
    SEED2:/u01/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/devdb_1:N
    and then use
    . oraenv
    SEED1
    sqlplus / as sysdba
    I see some people have modified oraenv to append the instance number to the end of ORACLE_SID
    I would be fine with using the net service name, if the TWO_TASK varaible was working correctly, but it does not seem to work the way the documentation says.
    Am I missing something here?

    Hello,
    It's good idea to add entries for each RAC instance in oratab and setup in a way when you login it sets up env for one instance say rac11 which is the primary instance for the node. Now here in this case , i got 2 different RAC instances and I have setup RAC11 for node1 and RAC12 env as default. So I don't have to set env when i login but i do change env when I go RAC21 and RAC22 instances. As far as the best practices goes, i see more what work for you and how easy is to manage.

  • How does the Oracle DBMS locate the Oratab file?

    I'm new to the Oracle environment. I have also successfully installed Oracle 11g on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.3 platform. How does the DBMS locate the oratab file? My oratab is located under the "/etc" sub-directory. How does the DBMS know to look their? If I wanted to change the location of my "oratab" file how do I point the DBMS to the new location?
    Thanks

    The RDBMs does not care of the oratab file. (why should it?)
    But some other scripts/utilities does. dbca, dbstart, dbshut and possible a lot others.
    So if you want, you can delete or move this file without affecting any RDBMS, but you have to modify all scripts you use if they rely on oratab, and you have to accept some tools will provide unexpected results without it.
    My personal suggestion: move oratab somewhere in your $ORACLE_BASE and create a symbolic link from this location to /etc/oratab.

  • Oracle user .profile change and running Database

    We have 1 Oracle Database (9i) running on AIX Server for long time. Now we are making some room to create second database. We would like to make change to Oracle User .profile , so it would prompt to specify ORACLE_SID upon login under oracle to UNIX. Also we would add new entry in oratab for new database. However we will not be creating this database for another couple of weeks. Could this cause some trouble for currently running Database? Could existing backup jobs, stats job and other monitor jobs fail on existing running DB?
    Let me know if you need more information to help us on this question

    This is very unlikely, though it would depend on how you developed the jobs you discuss. Without these jobs: no problem.
    What I do with multiple databases on Unix boils down the following.
    In /etc/profile, I set up a env var DEFDB
    In .profile of Oracle I set ORACLE_SID to the value of this DEFDB, and I set
    ORAENV_ASK to "NO". I run oraenv (which is in /usr/local/bin), and I leave ORAENV_ASK set.
    I don't want oraenv asking for a database during login, and I want to issue
    export ORACLE_SID=<some value> prior to running oraenv manually.

  • Guidelines to copying a database for server change

    Hi,
    We have a 12 GB database of version 8.1.7.4 on aix 5.1. This has to be copied to a server of aix 5.3 and all are local disks.
    Is the following procedure fine for doing the copy and startup:
    1) Maintain the os file structure on the new server.
    2) Install database 8.1.7.4 on the new server.
    3) Taking an online backup of the current database and copying to new server.
    4) Shutting down the production database
    5) Copying all the online redo log files to the new server and doing cancel based recovery until no change is requested.
    6) Copying the tnsnames.ora, sqlnet.ora and listener.ora files and starting the listener.
    7) Starting the database.
    Is it necessary to upgrade the db before copying?

    1) Maintain the os file structure on the new server.
    2) Install database 8.1.7.4 on the new server.
    3) Taking an online backup of the current database and copying to new server.You can take the backup of all the files after shutting down which will make life easier but still it should be OK
    4) Shutting down the production database
    5) Copying all the online redo log files to the new server and >doing .cancel based recovery until no change is requested.
    6) Copying the tnsnames.ora, sqlnet.ora and listener.ora files and starting the listener.
    7) Starting the database.Make an entry in the /etc/oratab to startup the database automatically upon reboot and also you should an entry in file i couldnt remeber now
    No need to upgrade anything just copy will do everything

  • Oratab and host

    hi,
    pls explain the diff between /etc/oratab and /etc/hosts with their usage
    thanks

    oratab :created by Oracle in the /etc or /var/opt/oracle directory when installing database software
    used to list the databases and software versions installed on a server.
    hosts : a computer file used in an operating system to map hostnames to IP addresses
    PS:Please dont forget to change thread status to answered if it possible when u belive your thread has been answered, it pretend to lose time of other forums user while they are searching open question which is not answered,thanks for understanding

  • Wrong oratab entry

    I am on a RAC 10.2.0.4 db Standard Edition on RHEL 5.3. Two nodes. The db uses an ASM 11.1.0.7 instance and CRS 11.1.0.7.
    I have launched dbca and created a database like I had done with other 3 databases before.
    My /etc/oratab file does not contain the instance name but the database name. Moreover the oraenv utility does not set the environment correctly.
    I think this issue might be due to the fact I had a wrong ORACLE_SID variable set when I launched dbca.
    How can I fix this issue?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
    it is normal that in a RAC environment only the database entry is in oratab, not the instance name. (That has nothing to do to have set ORACLE_SID before, since this should have been overwritten by DBCA when creating the database).
    In my RAC environments for oraenv I always add (not change!) these entries to the oratab, to have an easy possibility to set the oraenv.
    In generall oratab entries are not used actively other than in dbstart, which is not active in RAC environments anyway. So there should not be any sideeffects.
