Organizing folders

I copied all of my pictures from my pc to cds and imported them to iphoto. i have a problem with which folders my pictures end up in. for instance, in my iphoto library one main folder is a year ,"2003", which leads to another folder, a number, "6", and so on...for 3-4 times. my library is so random and i can never find them to send online or host.
is there a way to choose a folder to put the pictures when you import them?
also, is there an easy way to move pictures between folders?
on my pc i could just open up two folder and drag & drop my pictures into different folders, but i can't seem to do this on my mac.

Hi john,
This is how the iPhoto Library is organized in the Finder. The rule of thumb is "Look but don't touch"
This is a view of how the iPhoto Library looks in the Finder.
It is organized by Year folders. Inside the Year folders are Month folders. Inside the Month folders are the days of the Month. Inside the day folders are the photos you took on that day. If you imported video clips and RAW files on that day they will be in an Originals folder. If you have edited any photo imported on that day, the original will be in that folder also.
Two Apple kbs for you to read
Don't tamper with files in the iPhoto library folder
About the iPhoto Library folder
In your second question, I think you are talking about putting/moving images in folders in the Finder. No, you can't do that as per the two links I posted above. You cannot, rename, move, or delete anything from the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder....Period!
iPhoto imports all the images into it's own database and organizes them in the dated folders. All the organization you do within the iPhoto application to the library such as albums, keywords, smart albums is all stored in data files. There is nothing visual that you see in the folder in the Finder.
So, to answer one of the other questions...
Share/export the images that you want to upload/use to a folder on the desktop. Navigate to that folder in the application you are using to upload, etc, and choose your images.
I hope that answers most of your questions!

  • Suggestions for organizing folders?

I have way too many folders with subfolders, and my problem is I like to keep folders on my desktop with files I need to attend to in the near future. If I do not, then I will likely forget about it.
1.) Can anyone recommend a way to organize my folders so they always stay in the same spot in fixed places somewhere near the top of the screen, though I can still move other folders around on other parts of the screen? Almost like a dock for folders?
2.) Can anyone provide any other general suggestions for organizing folders for something like this?
    Thanks!

I don't know of a way to 'pin' certain folders to specific locations in the desktop grid without pinning all of the other folders as well. You could try [DragThing|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/633] or you could do what I do. I put my storage volumes in the dock and navigate them hierarchically and only put the folders that I need at the moment (projects) in the dock. It is not a good idea to have 'tons' of stuff on your desktop, especially if they are files (not necessarily folders.) The system has to store all of that info in RAM. At one point I thought I had a memory leak but it turned out to be a video file on the desktop that was using about a gig of RAM. Moved it into a folder and memory usage went back to normal.
According to you sig, you are running Tiger, but you are posting this on a Leopard forum. If you are using Leopard, you should also look into [Path Finder version 5|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6371/path-finder]. I would be very hard for me to live without it. There is +a lot+ of things you can do with it. (Including Smart Sorting, ie. list folders before files.) In my opinion, it is well worth the money.
    Hope this helps,
    D.

  • Where has the "Clean up" "Clean up by" option gone for organizing folders? I just upgraded to OS X Maverick today and noticed it was no longer a option when right clicking; also, it is grayed out in the view tab.

  • Itunes On 2 Computers, One Computer will not Sync With Organized Folders

I am having a problem having my laptop Itunes software sync my itunes folders they way they are organized in Itunes. I see all the music is there in one folder. I go into Music>Artists>All Music in one long list. I've never seen this happen. This is after I try to get my laptop to now be the main file transfer. Right now it's the PC. It has nothing in the Playlist folder.
Does anyone know what the problem is or how I can get my Ipod to sync with my Itunes on my laptop.
Also when I went to my PC to transfer my purchases, which would have worked fine, it does nothing.
    I'm lost.
    Thanks for the help.

Just for the heck of it, I did a factory reset on the iPad again, and gave it another shot on the Win 7 64 machine at home. I uninstalled iTunes, restarted the computer, installed iTunes 9.1.1 64 bit for Windows, and achieved the exact same results: impossible to get iTunes to sync Google Contacts to the iPad. It goes through the motions, but never delivers any contacts to the iPad.

  • Organizing folders with itunes

I have my itunes, on my pc, set as organizer of my music. Itunes used to change my folders if the album is a recopilation/VA moving them to that folder or even the names of the folders changing the artist names, as you all know. I found out that some folders are protected and they cannot be changed. So I have one folder with one song and I cannot gather the album on VA folder. Anyone knows why?
    Thank you!

    Hello goldenchook,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Are you sure your playlist *Running List* is not a *Smart Playlist* instead of a regular one? If it's a smart playlist it will have a small gear on the icon next to it's name.
Otherwise, have you tried dragging this purchased music from your main Library onto the playlist instead?

  • Export my audio from iPod into organized folders with menaninful filenames

    Hello,
I want to "export" my audio from the iPod to my hard drive. A mere copy-and-paste (or drag-and-drop) will not do because on my iPod, the music is scattered in special folders and have special names, thanks to iPod's special way of syncing. How can I export my stuff from iPod into nice human-workable folders and filenames, just as things were when I synced audio from my hard drive to the iPod?
If you could recommend FREE software, I'd appreciate it.

Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Other free programs are Pod Player, SharePod and Floola and iDump and iPodRobot.
(and I'm assuming here that "other OS" means Windows)

  • I have iphoto 5.0.4  My computer crashed while trying to quit iphoto and when I rebooted my albums and organized folders had all disapeared.  All my photos are still there but how do I retrieve my folders and albums?  I tried rebuilding the database

My computer crashed while quiting iphoto.  When I rebooted my albums and folders had disappeared.  How do I get them back?  I tried rebuilding the database to no avail.  I am using iphoto 5...
    Thank you community!

Most simple solution: restore from your back up.
Other than that, try Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • FC X Organizing folders

Hello, I'm new with FCX and I have watched many tutorials on the WEB. I have one question to make sure I'm doing this right.
My main drive which is an SSD resides my OS and Home folder, however all movies (original files from the camera), pictures and Libraries reside on a 3.5 3TB HD.
Should I get a third 3TB HD internal just for the original clips from the cameras and separate FCX library from the same drive where the original media is?
This is what I have right now:
Samsung Pro 512 (main drive) (Under Optical Drive)
Bay1 3TB for FC X library, original clips media, Photos, Ligthroom Library
Bay2 3TB For the edited and final movies
    Bay3 Windows
    Bay4 Empty
    External
1x 4TB USB3 connected via USB3 PCI card Time Machine
    1x 2TB FW800
    1X Mercury dual with 2X 2TB FW800
PS: My Home folder still resides on the main Drive, just the user libraries movies, photos and music stay on the 3.5 3TB.
I also have a spare external 3TB USB3 that hasn't been used in a box that could be used for something.
    Thanks

    Marcos_G wrote:
... you say spread the sources you mean the very original media right?
I mean the files you're actually using in FCPX - if you use 'managed' files, the originals; if you use optimized/proxy, I mean those...
I'm handling here up to 6 or even 7 'streams' in MultiCam... spread to 3 hard drives.. .. cheap usb3 ones, I don't get paid for my hobby ...
Drives are the bottleneck; drives are mechanically; handling more than 2-3 streams brings it fast to its limits. No, my MacMini has 4usb ports, all in use here.
    Marcos_G wrote:
… Should I use an extra internal or a external FW or USB3 for that?
Internal would be fastest connection; but, as a hobbyist, I'm not shy to use usb3.
For my wallet size  needs, I let the DiskUtility format two of my drives as a Raid0 ... allprofessionals will moan out loud yet, but... hey: it works, it's fast, and if it gets broken, I have the backups of my original SDcards, and start over .. perhaps inconvenient, but I'm no news-room, delivering on the minute ...
    (my 200mbps Raid0 for under 99€…)
I switched from using fw400 to usb3 ... fast, cheap, easy.

  • Accidentally moved all photos out of separate folders into single folder!

So somehow I managed to move all of my photo files from my work out of their respective, nicely organized folders into one single folder. I really can't figure out how. All 15,588 of them... now unorganized into a single folder. "Undo" didn't work and I tried restoring from a catalog backup with no success. Also... my Time Machine backup refuses to restore because the disk is messed up, so that's useless. Lightroom still has all of the folders recognized in the catalog but the photos are missing, (?) and I do not want to just "re-link" them and point Lightroom to the photos in the new folder.
So I guess my question is, can I go to each folder in lightroom and physically move all the photos that were previously in that folder BACK into that folder on the system automagically? It seems that lightroom recognizes what folders used to exist there... just can't find them. Well, I know they are all in that one folder and would like Lightroom to move them all back to their appropriate folders. That way when I search for a folder on my computer (not in lightroom), the folder contains the photos that used to be there. I hope this makes sense. I am using Lightroom 4.1 on a Mac running OSX version 10.8.3. Thank you for any and all help.

Sorry IIIMPower, I just saw this post after responding to the other post.

Rob, this sounds like it would work. I downloaded it and installed it and am having trouble editing the advanced settings... I have no idea what to put in the "FROM-PATH" area. Would this be "/Volumes/2TB HD/AUTO RESTORATION?" When I tried that, the plugin did nothing. Any tips on how to get this working?
If your best whack at a correct path failed, then I'll have to add a UI with browse button for ya.
But before I do that, please send me the (preferrably verbose) log file.
    Instructions:
    * Check the 'Verbose Logging' box in top section of plugin manager.
    * Then click the 'Clear logs' button (same section), or reload plugin or restart Lightroom.
    * Click the 'Relocate' button (bottom section of plugin manager).
(use test mode, not real mode)
That will produce a fresh set of verbose logs. To send them to me, click the 'Problem Report' button in the top section of plugin manager.
    UPDATE:
The fromPath should be the flat folder, i.e. where the files will need to be moved from. The location where files will be moved to is: "where they belong", which is known - it's in the catalog.
So if "...Auto Restoration" folder is not the path to the flat folder (it's not, right?) it should not be in the fromPath.
if "...68 Oldsmobile 442" is the flat folder, then it should be in the fromPath (with '...' replaced by the correct path prefix).
*** Important: Relocation Services only relocates selected photos. Thus, you need to select which photos you want to restore before clicking the 'Relocate' button. The results of the relocation should be evident in Lightroom, but complete details are available in the log file. PS - the log file is not only useful for recording details of successful operation, but also may provide a clue if operation is not successful.

  • Using Bridge and LR with same folders/files

Having organized, edited and rated my photos using Bridge CS4 but recently started getting seriously into LR3 I still want to keep that file structure, either in a transitional period or indefinitely.
I normally use Bridge to import the photos, then spend some time creating sub-folders (one folder per event), organizing them. I'm hoping that I can add those (already organized) folders into LR, but can't figure out how. I see how I can import the photos, but I don't want that as I want to keep them all in the same location (they're all organized on the hard drive as I want them), just have LR "see" them so I can further edit and rate them. How do I do that?
I also want LR to understand and see the edits I've made to my RAW files as well as my ratings, keywords etc.
Are there other things I should keep in mind when having my photos work with both Bridge and LR?

It's possible to work the way you do, but with Lr it's a bit awkward, particularly if you start editing (developing) your images in Bridge.
You ask: " I'm hoping that I can add those (already organized) folders into Lr, but can't figure out how."
You have to import the images. Without importing nothing can happen in Lr.
So, open the Import Dialog. If it shows only the small window of the Import Dialog, click on the triangle in the bottom left corner, to expand the window.
On the left side you'll see the <Source> panel. navigate to the folder in question and click on it to select it. You will see all images in this folder in the main window of the Import Dialog.
Then in the top center of the Import Dialog select <Add>.
<Add> is for importing images that are already on the hard drive and you do not want to change their location.
<Move> is for importing images that are already on the hard drive and you do want to change their location.
<Copy> is for importing images from camera / memory card.
By selecting <Add> Lr will import the images in their present folder and will display the folder.
Your Bridge edits will also be imported because on import Lr reads the image file and the xmp-file where Bridge has stored the metadata of your edits.
But this is true only for import. Should you then decide for an image that has been imported in Lr to edit it in Bridge again, these edits would not automatically be visible in Lr. This is so because with imported images Lr stores all edits in its catalog, and does not display the metadata from the xmp-file where Bridge saves edits.
But you can make Lr read and display these additional Bridge-edits by doing a <read metadata from file>. But this is problematic because <reading metadata from file> will overwrite any Lr edits.
So you see that because of the fact that Lr works with its catalog while Bridge does not, editing images in Bridge and in Lr is a recipe for frustration. It can be done, but it's awkward and prone to mistakes.
Therefore I would suggest to bite the bullet and henceforth use Lr as your only editor. Import images from camera in Lr, do all your editing in Lr.
Since you are used to do edits in in Bridge Camera Raw, Lr will pose no big problems for you.
But if you don't want to let go of Bridge right away, I'd suggest you do at least one thing: After importing the images in Lr refrain from further editing these images in Bridge.

  • Organizing image library with Bridge

Hi! I'm new to the Adobe Forums but very experienced online. I need some help with Bridge.
I've been tasked with cleaning up an existing image library of (currently) ~40,000 images. I have another batch of ~8,000 files I'll be adding later. I'm using Bridge CC on Windows 7. I don't have access to Lightroom, haven't used Bridge much since CS3, and use Aperture as my DAM at home, so I'm re-discovering how things work.
We have numerous, not well-organized folders with many duplicates, retouched versions, multiple sizes, etc. I want to be able to search, delete duplicates manually, and move remaining files into a new folder structure. I'm also assigning labels and adding copyright/ownership metadata.
I'm having a couple of problems using the Edit->Find command.
When I've run Find and built a list, then do any editing operation like delete files, the Find command starts over instead of retaining the existing results. This is obviously time-consuming and throws me out of whatever set of images I'm trying to manage. Is there a way to use the Find results and NOT have Bridge start the search over?
I also need a way to search with both AND and OR operators. Example: Find JPEG or TIFF or Photoshop or Camera RAW images and filename foo. I can't use specific criteria to narrow my search, so I'm getting a huge set of results. This takes forever, eats RAM, and my first issue makes it impossible to do any editing.
I'd also appreciate any tips or suggestions to make this job easier.
Thanks in advance for the assistance.
    Dave

I'm not sure why that functionality isn't just built into a better Find command? Adobe?
As this is a user to user forum you are not addressing Adobe here, you need to use the Feature request site from Photoshop Family for this:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/
Also be aware that you have very specific needs and while Bridge can be a very powerful tool for organizing files it s not that very good for archiving in long term with large numbers of files. ideally you should use a combination of Bridge and a real dedicated DAM (digital asset management) application like Canto Cumulus (can be costly for custom build solutions but has also a single user version at a reasonable price) Canto can find duplicates by itself and has the option to build customized queries for searching.
You also have Extensis Portfolio and some other reasonable cheap solutions you could take a look at. However, for the ideal DAM you need a custom build one that sadly comes also with a price

  • Organization of folders

Hi have been reading posts on organizing folders and albums in iphoto but still having problems with it. basically what i want to do is create a folder or album called photoshop and be able to open that folder to veiw subfolders ie.clouds ,sky ,fire ect. have tried creating new folders and new albums and then dragging them to other folders and or albums , but they will not drop in.
    thanks Neil

Folders can contain other folders, albums, slideshows, etc. But albums can only contain photos. If you're trying to drop an album or folder onto an album you won't be able to do so.
As If you can drag photos to albums then you're not experiencing the Helvetica font issue. If you can't then do as Terence suggested and make sure the Helvetica is activated using Font Book.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • How to Create Application Folders with 4.0

You have 2 options for creating and organizing folders for applications on your iOS 4 Devices: Create on the device or in iTunes
To create folders on your iOS 4 Device:
Tap and hold an icon until all your iPhone icons begin to shake. This will allow you to edit your home screen. Once they are shaking, drag an icon onto another and a folder will automatically be created. At this point, you will also be able to rename the folder. Tap the folder icon to reveal all the apps inside and if you want to add another application, simply drag it onto the folder. You can add up to 12 icons per folder and you can have up to
If you want to delete an application from a folder, you can press an icon until it begins to shake, then tap the x near the icon you want to delete. You can also drag it from a folder back to the home screen or to another folder to move it.
To create, edit, and sync folders from iTunes:
    - Connect your iOS 4 Device to your computer
    - If it is not automatically recognized by iTunes, find it under Devices on the left column of iTunes then click on it.
    - Click on the Apps tab
    - Make sure there is a checkmark in Sync Apps
    - Under this option, make sure there is a checkmark in all applications you want to sync to your device.
    - On the right side of this tab, select the screen on which to create the folder.
    - To create a folder drag one App over another, hold for a few seconds, then drop the App in the folder that appears.
    - To add an App to an existing folder, double-click the folder, then drag the App from the list on the left into an existing folder.
    - You can double-click the folder icon to see the contents in an overlay.
    - This will allow you to rename the folder.
    - This will allow you to drag Apps to rearrange them within the folder.
    - As stated above, this will also allow you to drag an App from the list of Apps on the left in order to place it in the open folder.
A lot of people are interested in doing this but I have not been able to find a good guide with info on how to do it. It looks like we're still working on getting something published.

What used to be "Application Workspace" in 10.1.2 is "Application" in 10.1.3.2

  • Iphoto folders to display on iphone

I have been really hating the way that the iphone organizes the pictures based on last imported and last 12 months rather than my perfectly organized folders or events. Is there anyway that iphoto can organize the photos based on events or picture folder names? Or is there anyway to delete last imported and last 12 months and enter my own categories? If anyone knows how this works please tell me.. thanks

here is how I did it
I created a folder for all the pictures I wanted on my iPhone and created subfolders in it to organize them
When I sync I sync from that folder not from iPhoto
    Hope it helps
