Organizing Images

Although I use PSE8 for Mac to post process my images, out of habit & familiarity I use iPhoto '09 as my storage & organizing space. However, since I am having a color match problem between PSE & iPhoto, I am thinking of another place to store & organize my images.
I am curious as to what other app some of you might be using for storage & organizing.
I have considered simply storing my images in folders on my hard drive. But, I need to be able to view & expand thumbnails.
Thank you so much.

I just started migrating from iPhoto 09 to PSE 8 / Bridge and I'm really liking it. A few times my iPhoto 09 library got corrupted and I lost some images, so I'm starting to get away from that structure and created something that lets me organize my photos.
Basically I created my own hierchary under the Picture folder and by using keywords, filters, and collections I'm able to get a nice clean organization of my photos without having to worry about a master library.

  • Organizing image library with Bridge

Hi! I'm new to the Adobe Forums but very experienced online. I need some help with Bridge.
I've been tasked with cleaning up an existing image library of (currently) ~40,000 images. I have another batch of ~8,000 files I'll be adding later. I'm using Bridge CC on Windows 7. I don't have access to Lightroom, haven't used Bridge much since CS3, and use Aperture as my DAM at home, so I'm re-discovering how things work.
We have numerous, not well-organized folders with many duplicates, retouched versions, multiple sizes, etc. I want to be able to search, delete duplicates manually, and move remaining files into a new folder structure. I'm also assigning labels and adding copyright/ownership metadata.
I'm having a couple of problems using the Edit->Find command.
When I've run Find and built a list, then do any editing operation like delete files, the Find command starts over instead of retaining the existing results. This is obviously time-consuming and throws me out of whatever set of images I'm trying to manage. Is there a way to use the Find results and NOT have Bridge start the search over?
I also need a way to search with both AND and OR operators. Example: Find JPEG or TIFF or Photoshop or Camera RAW images and filename foo. I can't use specific criteria to narrow my search, so I'm getting a huge set of results. This takes forever, eats RAM, and my first issue makes it impossible to do any editing.
I'd also appreciate any tips or suggestions to make this job easier.
Thanks in advance for the assistance.
    Dave

I'm not sure why that functionality isn't just built into a better Find command? Adobe?
As this is a user to user forum you are not addressing Adobe here, you need to use the Feature request site from Photoshop Family for this:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/
Also be aware that you have very specific needs and while Bridge can be a very powerful tool for organizing files it s not that very good for archiving in long term with large numbers of files. ideally you should use a combination of Bridge and a real dedicated DAM (digital asset management) application like Canto Cumulus (can be costly for custom build solutions but has also a single user version at a reasonable price) Canto can find duplicates by itself and has the option to build customized queries for searching.
You also have Extensis Portfolio and some other reasonable cheap solutions you could take a look at. However, for the ideal DAM you need a custom build one that sadly comes also with a price

  • Best strategy for importing organized images

    Hello,
I have recently started using Aperture in my photography workflow and I need some advice from the experts on the best strategy to import the existing .JPGs from my hard disk into my Aperture library.
Prior to using Aperture, my workflow was as follows:
1.) I would import ALL the photos from my digital camera to a folder on my hard disk (one folder for each date of import). These, in effect, were my 'master' images, which I never edited or deleted.
2.) Next I would make a copy of each new master folder, under a separate folder called 'picks', where I would go thru and delete the bad ones and occasionally make some minor edits or crops to the good ones. These 'picks' folders are what I used for my slideshows, photo galleries, etc.
NOW, as I'm moving everything to Aperture, I'm attempting to find the best strategy to import everything, where I would maintain both a master copy of everything that came off my camera and the already organized 'albums' of 'versions' the represent my 'picks', but also reduce some of the redundancy of having duplicate copies of 60-70% of the photos in my library.
Here is where I need some advice. In the case of new photos imported directly from the camera into Aperture I have managed to figure out how to import the master images and then create albums of versions for my good pics. However, I haven't found any way to import my existing masters and picks without importing two copies of each "good" pick.
Is there any way I can get Aperture to recognize that the photos in my 'picks' folders are actually 'versions' of some of the original 'masters' so I don't need to import two master copies of each of my good pics? (I generally left the file names the same.)
I have several thousand existing pics on my hard disk that I'm hoping to import into Aperture so I'm hoping there is an efficient way to do this!
    Many thanks for the help!

HI I would also be interested in how others do this. I have been playing with aperture for some time and I am still not sure whether to commit to it.
I also keep my masters in a folder structure with year at the highest level and day of shooting below that.
I know its not necessary to do this in Aperture but I am not sure I understand why or if its a bad thing to do.
Would love to her what others think and advise.
    Thanks

  • Organizing Images (Bridge, Lightroom, etc.)

I want to organized all the images on my website. I'll probably have a zillion questions, but I'd like to start out with a brief overview, just to see if I can get some general tips and guidance.
First, imagine a website with all its images in a folder named images. Some of these images were downloaded from the Internet or scanned into my computer, while I made other images with Photoshop.
The first thing I want to do is somehow organize my images, preferably giving each image meta data (e.g. key words). In fact, I've already learned how to do this with Apple's Aperture program, though I'm not entirely happy with the results. So I'd like to try Adobe's equivalent, though I'm not even sure if that's Bridge or Lightroom.
Another problem with Aperture is that it creates a separate image library that just takes up more disk space. If possible, I'd like to find a program that doesn't store images so much as store or remember their locations. Think of it as taking a snapshot of the folder MySite/images.
It would be extremely helpful if this program could then keep track of any changes I make with my images. For example, imagine an image named alaska-tree.jpg, identified by the key words "Alaska" and "tree." If I rename the image to aktree.jpg and move it into a different folder, I'd like it to retain its metadata and any other thing associated with it. Can this be done with Bridge and/or Lightroom?
Another thing that would be helpful is the ability to link images to parent Photoshop files. For example, let's say I create a Photoshop file named Evolution.ps. I then use it to create to web images, az-evo.jpg and wy-evo.png. I'd like each of those images to somehow "remember" that it was created from Evolution.ps. And if I decided to move Evolution.ps into another folder, it would helpful if its child images would somehow know which folder it was moved into.
I'm just learning how to work with Apple's "smart folders," which will probably be a big help, though I don't think they'll match images with Photoshop files or keep track of name or location changes.
Anyway, do you know if I can do any or all of the above with Bridges, Lightroom or some other program? Thanks.

Your questions are not directly related to using Dreamweaver.  You'll get much better answers to this in Bridge & Photoshop Lightroom forums.

  • Organizing images for a photo album (to be printed) not working as expected

I am trying to create a group of selects from a vacation from which I will print 40 non-snorkeling photos to put in a physical photo album. Here’s what I’m doing:
Created project Hawaii, imported about 400 images.
Created keywords "Hawaii", “Snorkeling Trip” and “Everything Else”
Created Smart Album “Land and Air” with keywords “Hawaii” and “Everything Else”
Created Smart Album “Snorkeling Trip” with keywords “Hawaii” and “Snorkeling Trip”
    Created empty Album “Photo Album”
At this point I have about 400 images in the project Hawaii, 350 in Smart Album “Land and Air” and 50 in Smart Album “Snorkeling Trip”. So far everything is working as expected.
Next I selected the Smart Album “Land and Air”, switched to the Ratings & Keywords view, walked through all images and found 40 to rate 5-stars. I also cropped and made some adjustments.
Next I re-arranged these 40 selects to an order that better depicts a story. Note: At this point the sort field indicates “Custom” as expected.
Next I dragged these 40 selects into empty Album “Photo Album”. This is where the problems begin:
In the Album "Photo Album", the sort order changed to “Image Date” and “Custom” is now grayed out. I can not change the order of the images.
All of these images are “- version 2”. If I click on the Smart Album “Land and Air” these 40 “- version 2” images appear there, too, in addition to the ones that are already there. I.E. There are 40 more images in “Land and Air”, 40 of the original images and 40 of “- version 2”. Interestingly, the originals and “- version 2” images are identical – they are both cropped and adjusted.
I’m confused as to why there are “- version 2” images when they are the same (with crops and adjustments) as version "1”. What I expected was to just have the 40 images I selected out and arranged in the Album “Photo Album” and the original 40 in Smart Album “Land and Air” not duplicated and would (or perhaps would not?) reflect the crops and adjustments, and keywording.
How should I be doing this? What am I doing wrong?

  • RE: Organizing Images in Library

    Hello Everyone.
I have Many Images in my Library, and I would like to organize them such as moving them next to each other, But for example: when I try moving a image from second row to the top or bottom I get this message that this dose not support custom selection.

Is seems like when you Import Images First, all the Images goes to All Photographs, Am I Correct ?
All Photographs are one place you can see the photos. I guess I wouldn't use the phrase "goes to", as All Photographs is simply displaying things, it doesn't "contain" photos.
Also I noticed Every time I Import Images It also goes to the Smart Collections. am I Correct ?
If your smart collections are set up a certain way, then yes, newly imported photos can appear in certain smart collections. But they don't have to appear in smart collections on Import. I guess I wouldn't use the phrase "goes to", as smart collections are simply displaying things, they don't "contain" photos.
In other words If you have 100 Images Inside the All Photographs, you also going to have 100 Images Inside the Smart collections Is that Correct ?
As I said, it doesn't have to work this way, but it can work this way. Or maybe some of the 100 will appear in certain smart collections, but not all.
What Happens If you Delete the Smart collections ?
Then the smart collection doesn't exist any more.
Also why When you Import for example One Image It dose not stay either in the order like In Top or the bottom, It gets mixed up In the middle of Images ?
There are different sort orders. Perhaps you need to change the sort order, via the Lightroom command View->Sort

  • Organizing Images with Bridge CS4

Since I am new to Bridge, I would appreciate some advice from you veterans. For now, I have decided to locate my images in various sub-folders in the Pictures folder ( located in my Home folder). For those images that I choose to save both the Raw file along with the edited .tif or .jpeg file, is there a way to "stack" the Raw file & the edited file to reduce clutter?
Thank you for any help & suggestions.

  • Feature request: Better tool for organizing image files

    Hi all,
I'm considering rearranging the directory structure of my photo library completely (for a number of reasons: new cameras, a new variety of tools on new PCs).
I would like to reorganize my photos into a year\month directory structure and that will basically spread all my image files into new locations.
I have searched quite a bit and the advices I have seen don't seem to work:
    (1) Moving the files outside LR is fairly easy (using exiftool) but I cannot make LR link to the files automatically in their new locations. And doing it manually with "Locate file" or "Find missing folder" is not practical due to the large number of files and large number of new locations.
    (2) Moving the files with LR tools is also not practical: Manually dragging the photos into the new directory structure will take forever, and the only automatic rename feature I know of is "Rename Files ..." cannot move the photos into new directories (it can, however, assign names from the file dates and other metadata).
Now my feature suggestion: Either make it possible for LR to automatically relink files that have been scattered into a new directory structure or - better yet - make it possible for LR to perform such auto-organize operations.
My mp3 manager (MediaMonkey) is a good example to follow: It can organize (move or copy) any number of music files into any directory structure built from the audio file's metadata (such as my standard audio directory structure: Music\<Artist>\<Album>\<Track#:2> - <Title>).
Interestingly, the LR "Rename file" function can almost do it already; it just cannot move the file into a new directory.
Or can this be done in a way I haven't discovered?

Sorry if I might be stating the obvious (but at least I was such a *dummy* once that I needed this explicitely):
In order to move the sequence of images per drag&drop in grid view you need to
Put the sort order in the bottom toolbar to "user order" (toggle visibility with letter T if not displayed)
Grab an image from within its thumbnail, not from its border-cell.
When you move around you see a vertical black thick line wandering in between images where you would be able to drop it
Put the images first into a collection in case they should be spread across multiple folders.
This is the reason why most often from a filter result you cannot re-arrange.
Still sometimes it does not work as I want, but can *be persuaded*, i.e. I repeat the same trial after first moving to another collection, then return back. I can't nail it down sufficiently to file a bug.
For an automated sorting according to filename (chosse that setting finally in toolbar) you could rename the photos in place, without exporting & re-importing. Just select them and hit <F2> to bring up the renaming dialog like possible during import.
+1 vote from me, as I am neither satisfied with the responsiveness of moving folders within LR e.g. from laptop hard disk to NAS.
Apart from that I try not to build much on my folder structure, just break them into manageable quantities and have a quick "diary-overview" by using naming convention "YYYY-MM-DD description of event" (pictures of up to 4 cameras go inside, unique filenames for Canons achieved by renaming during import). For all the rest I prefer to build (smart) collections.

  • Organizing images with in a roll???

I have imported about 200 images into a roll that I want to make a slide show out of. I assumed tht I would be able to organize the images AFTER getting them into iPhoto, but it doesn't seem so.
    Is there a way?

    Dennis:
In rolls you are limited to listing by film roll, keyword, date title or rating. To manually order a number of photos to a slideshow or other use put them in an Album first. Then in the album you can select Manually as the sorting mechanism and arrange them as you'd like. Then make the slideshow from the album. It's often easier to start with an album for any project as it's easier to see which photos you've included in that project or add/remove photos.

  • Organizing Images -jpegs-in Mavericks. Can I Do It

Can I do this? Upgraded from ML to Mavericks....In All My Files, if I go to images. I have a lot of images. A lot are the jpeg number, like 0.1Jpeg, other are named/labed by the subject. I have to go travel quite aways down to get to the images that labeled by subject, and are in alphabetical order? Or how can I bring those images that are labeled by name first. Is this where favorites and tagging come in? Thanks for any help.

Does this screen shot help? I used the Application folder as an example.

  • Suggestions on organizing in iPhoto

I wanted to find out some of your opinions on a basic approach to organizing images I am considering doing with my images in iPhoto '08...any pros and/or cons you can respond back with would be appreciated!
I am looking at my events in iPhoto and I see about 7 different one's for each of 7 different weddings I've attended; I see about 30 total events for each of the major family holidays over the last several years (X-Mas, Thanksgiving, etc.); and so on and so on...
I was thinking about perhaps keywording each of the images in each of the wedding events using the names of the people who got married, then simply merging all 7 wedding events into a single event (perhaps creating an album out of each before doing so)...I'd then do the same thing for each of the family holidays (merging 30 events into a single event, after keywording appropriately and creating albums out of each event as necessary)...
Anyone have any thoughts on this approach? Pros? Cons?
    Thanks!

What do you find useful to name Event Titles?
    As I said above:
I use Events as a crude basic organisation - big buckets of picture: Winter 07, Feb-May 08, Italy 06.
But I could as easily use 'Old Family Pics' if that's what the event folder contains.
Do you change the "title" of the individual photos (from say IMG0005) to something more meaningful?
Yes. Pics in my Library will be titled something : Spring 06 (H) 1234. The first part is self-explanatory, the (H) refers to whose camera and the number is supplied by the Photos -> batch Change command.
Some specific photos I may title for a specific purpose, but with 20k photos in iPhoto, there's not that much time...
In Descriptions of each photo do you repeat the info you might have already listed in the Events Title or photo title or keywords?
I see no point in repeating data. It doesn't become any more searchable.
In other words how redundant do I want to get? Is more better or does it confuse iphoto?
Repeated information adds nothing, more will not confuse iPhoto.

    TD

  • Drag Image Order within in Grid View or on Filmstrip

Sure would be nice to to be able grab an image or group of images and drag them to a new location in the grid or filmstrip and be able to drop them there. I thought the whole idea was to be able to make it simple for arranging a slideshow, or organizing images in an order deemed logical to the photographer. Stacks accomplish some of this functionality, but not enough.
    -David

The best way to do a slideshow is to select all the images to be used and make a Quick COllection or Collection from them. Then one can drag and drop re-order the images in the FIlmstrip or grid for a slideshow.o
Such sorts can not be done in All Photographs, only in a Collection or single Folder (not a Parent). The problem for this in a Folder is all the images for the Slideshow have to be in the same folder and you end up using the whole folder not just some o fht eimages if you don't want all of them.
Bst to just make a Collection for a Slideshow. Sliedshow even remembers the settings for that Collection even if you don't create a preset.

  • Update for Nokia 5530? Read this please.

    Hi all!
I bought my (first) Nokia smartphone in January this year: Nokia 5530.
Since then, no updates was released for my device.
    Nokia forget 5530 as like 5800. Now only C / E series, N8, N9, and low-price like 52xx.
Recently new update was released for C6, 5230 and 5233 devices with Ovi Maps 3.06, Browser 7.3 Anna-like, Emoticons input, general improves and more.
Now, my Nokia 5530 is very poor and forgeted:
Don't have widgets, don't support IM for Nokia (i tested it and loved), Nokia Browser is terrible, and others resource is very obsolete.
I saw the C6, the images/videos viewer is very much better, you can categorize with folders, favorite photos, and music player now support lyrics.
Days ago I installed a C6 port to 5530 (I transformed my 5530 in C6), and now my device has widgets, IM for Nokia and all i mentioned in here, but in very lag, the "Memory is full, close some apps and try again" message appears all time, much bored. Then I back yesterday to original firmware 32.0.0.7. I also have put in ALL MUSICS (300+) image covers and lyrics to use in cfw, but now in original don't have this, and I much sad.
    What I want?
Want that Nokia don't forget users, because my first smartphone made my a Nokia lover, and I liking this. But i don't have money to buy a new smartphone (i want N8) because here in Brazil (where I live) is much expensive price.
Well, please Nokia, release a nice update for us Nokia 5530 users, even if not with widgets support, but with IM for Nokia, new browser/Ovi maps, lyrics support in Music Player, More organized images/videos viewer and more stabilities and improvements in cinetic scroll, etc.
I love Nokia and want to continue loving.
Thank you very much, I'm anxious waiting for my device update.
    Cheers,
    Destroyzer (@destroyzer).

The 5530 is an older device than the C6. The 5800 wasnt exactly forgotten, but its normal for nokia phones to lose updates once the unit is about a year and a half to two years old. The 5530 is almost two years old already (it will turn two this august), so its not unusual that it wont receive updates anymore.
Its not exactly Nokia's fault that you bought an outdated phone.

  • Bridge vs Aperture

I just had one of those DUH moments. After upgrading to a new MacBook Pro, I discovered a software program called Aperture which helps you organize images. It's wonderful!
However, I haven't yet figured out how to sync it with Photoshop and Dreamweaver. I asked some questions about it on a forum, and someone said "Don't bother; Bridge does the same thing."
The irony is that I have Bridge. I bought CS3 several years ago but spend so much time using Dreamweaver and Photoshop I haven't had time to learn Illustrator and Flash, and I've scarcely looked at the less familiar programs.
So now I have a trial version of Aperture 3 and CS3 Bridge, and I need to figure out which one will work best for me. In fact, I couldn't find an Adobe Bridge forum, though I did find a Lightroom forum; that's another software program I just learned about.
OK, here's what I want to do:
    1) First, I simply want to create a library of images and organize it using folders, keywords or whatever. I'm especially focusing on images of plants and animals for a Life sciences website I'm working on.
    2) I also want to organize the existing images on several websites.
    3) I assume I would still publish images online using Dreamweaver, but it would be nice to have some interaction between my website images and Bridge/Aperture/Lightroom.
For example, imagine a website at Mac > sites > geozoo. Of course, the images folder would be at Mac > sites > geozoo > images
Now imagine coyping that entire images folder into Bridge, Aperture or Lightroom. Rather than store the images in Apple's Pictures folder, they'd stay right where they are. Now suppose I add a new image - Leopard.jpg - to the folder images > Mammals > Carnivora > Cats
It would be cool if that image would automatically display in Bridge/Aperture/Lightroom. And it would also be nice if I could modify an image in Photoshop without causing any problems in my image management program.
Of course, there would also be many images in my library that might never get published online. I don't know how people do that; I assume, I'd have two libraries - a master library, and a secondary library residing at Mac > sites > geozoo > images where copies of images cleared for publishing are stored.
Anyway, does anyone have any tips or comments? Based on the research I've done so far, it sounds like any one of these programs would probably work OK for organizing images. But do any of these programs have any real strong points or drawbacks you can point out?
And if I switch to Bridge, do I need to upgrade to CS5.5, or is CS3 OK? After upgrading to a Mac, I'm not sure if I can afford any software upgrades right now.
P.S. If I go continue organizing my images with Aperture and later decide to switch to Bridge, can I copy all my images over along with their metadata (keywords, etc.)?
    Thanks!

  • Saving a folder (or exporting)

can anybody advice me as to how to export and or save a PROJECT with images in it that I need for a presentation in Keynote?
I need to back this information up or export it in case of a problem and I'm not sure how to do this.
Is there a good way to get the organized images out of Aperture so they are saved?
Do I need to run a close or save in Aperture to save the database?
    Thanks

Try trash your com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder. (Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
