OS X 10.6.1:  bootpd, named, and dynamic DNS zone updates

I have OS X 10.6.1 installed on a Mac Pro. It is configured to be the name server and DHCP server for my home network, i.e. /etc/named.conf and /etc/bootpd.plist have been modified to provide these services.
I've encountered no problems with either the name server or the DHCP component of bootpd after upgrading to OS X 10.6(.1); however, one thing that continues to bug me is how to configure bootpd to dynamically update the DNS zone files whenever a lease is issued, released, or expires.
At work, I use the Internet System Consortium's DHCP software and have it configured to dynamically update DNS whenever leases change state. I would really like to have DNS done the same way at home.
What changes need to be made to /etc/bootpd.plist that would allow dynamic DNS updates to occur?

Did you ever get an answer to this? Would rather not change the DHCP server in Snow Leopard....
Thanks

  • How to Configure bootpd to Perform Dynamic DNS Updates

I have been able to get bootpd configured to function as a basic DHCP server. I would now like to configure it to dynamically update DNS forward and reverse zones when leases are assigned, released, or expired.
Does anyone have an example of a bootpd.plist file to configure bootpd for dynamic DNS updates?

    Hi,
I am not sure what you are attempting to configure here.
But what the NAT configuration above does is do a Dynamic PAT for all the servers on the "firewall-dmz" to a single IP address towards the "firewall-outbound"
This Dynamic translation doesnt however enable connections to be initiated from behind the "firewall-outbound" interface. When your hosting a server which needs a NAT towards the users then the NAT type has to be Static NAT or Static PAT.
Static NAT will essentially use up one public IP address for just the single local host/server.
Static PAT will do a Port Forward from the public IP address and public port to the local IP and local port. And this is most commonly used with environments which only public IP address is the one that the ASA holds in its WAN interface.
A typical Static NAT configuration is this
    static (inside,outside) 1.1.1.1 10.10.10.10 netmask 255.255.255.255
    Where
inside = is the interface behind which the host is
outside = is the interface towards which the host is NATed
1.1.1.1 = is the public NAT IP address for the host
10.10.10.10 = is the local IP address of the host
A typical Static PAT configuration is this
    static (inside,outside) tcp interface 80 10.10.10.10 80 netmask 255.255.255.255
    Where
tcp = specifies the protocol for which the Static PAT configured
interface = specifies that we will be using the public IP address of the destination interface "outside" as the public IP address for this single Port Forward.
80 = first "80" specifies the public port visible to users behind the destination interface
80 = second "80" specifies the actual local port on which the local host is listening on
    Hope this helps

  • FIOS and Dynamic DNS

I'm thinking about switching from Verizon DSL to FIOS, but I have a few concerns.
Right now I am able to directly connect form my linux-based router to the DSL modem via PPPoE.  If for some resaon the PPP link drops the router just re-establishes it, and it always knows my outside IP.  It can also update my multiple dyanamic DNS addresses automatically when this happens.  My DSL IP address seems to change only when I shut down my router - it lasts weeks at a time.
With FIOS it sounds like you are forced to use NAT with the supplied router.  I can go ahead and disable wireless on it, and then just set up my own router to use a static IP and put it in the DMZ to get as close to a bypass as I can.  However, if my outside IP changes my internal router isn't going to know about it, and won't be able to update my dynamic DNS/etc.  It looks like the FIOS routers will update dynamic DNS addresses, but I'm not sure if they support namecheap, and I also don't know if they support updating more than one dynamic DNS service when my IP changes.
It also sounds like they cut the copper connection, so if it doesn't work out right it will be very hard to go back to DSL.
    Does anybody know:
    1.  Will the supplied router update more than one dynamic DNS service automatically?
    2.  Will the supplied router update a namecheap hosted dynamic DNS record?
    3.  When updating a namecheap DNS record will it only touch the A record and not mess with all my other DNS settings?
    4.  Can I somehow configure the router to provide my external IP to a single internal computer via DHCP (ie router gets an address from verizon, and then the router offers that address to my own router)?  Obviously this won't work with more than one computer on the router.
    5.  Can I alternatively connect to the verizon-provided router using PPPoE or a similar protocol to just get my external IP directly tunneled through the router?
    6.  Does a FIOS TV standard definition tuner box require a network connection?
    7.  What happens if the tuner it isn't connected to the network?  I won't be using any kind of interactive services anyway since the tuners will just be connected to my DVR.
    8.  Does the network connection have to be on the same subnet as the verizon-provided router, or is it sufficient that it be able to reach that router or the internet via NAT (there would be a NAT layer between my internal network and the verizon-powered router)?
    9.  If this stuff doesn't end up working right, can I just pull the plug on FIOS and go back to Verizon DSL and POTS?
In case it isn't clear, here is how I envision the network looking:
Verizon - Verizon Router - NAT with My Router in the DMZ - My Router - NAT - My internal network
I guess if I get really desperate I could try to find a tunnel broker of some kind - not sure if anybody does that for IPv4 the way it is done for IPv6.  That would allow me to get my external IP through the NAT and potentially give me a static one as well...
I REALLY don't want to pay an extra $50 for a static IP.  I'd probably just stick with the DSL if it came to that even though it is actually more expensive than switching (for dynamic service) and it is a lot slower...
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Hmm - that idea might not actually work out all that well.  It might or might not work at all, but one thing that it would probably do is make it impossible to access the router's web interface (since the router wouldn't have an IP address of its own on any of the ports).  So, if it did work it would be a once-and-done configuration and then I'd need to reset it to do anything else with it.  This would also make it impossible to attach set-top-boxes directly to the actiontec router, but then again they'd be only one NAT layer away from verizon if I attached them to my home network.
I suspect I might be better off with the DMZ approach and just living with a single dynamic dns entry.  The main reason I use more than one of those is so that if my IP address changes I don't have to wait for the DNS TTL to run out to find out what the new IP is - I can just wait a few minutes to be safe and resolve one of my other dynamic addresses which won't be cached anywhere so it will get the fresh entry.
I guess my other option is to fire up nslookup and point it directly at the appropriate DNS server so that I"m not seeing a cached response.
I've heard mixed reports on how often the FIOS IPs change anyway.  If they only change once in a blue moon I'm not terribly concerned about this stuff.
(Why can't everybody just switch to IPv6 and end all this NAT nonsense anyway...?)

  • Autodiscover and Pinpoint DNS zone

    Hello all,
i am still experiencing a lot of confusion with Lync and DNS records.
I have a Standard edition front end server, Edge server and Reverse proxy.
My internal domain space is different to the sip address
    sip address =  aaa.co.uk   internal domain  = aaa.loc
I can't have a zone aaa.co.uk on my internal DNS servers so i created
    _sipinternaltls._tcp.aaa.co.uk
in there i have a SRV record (5061) pointing to sip.aaa.co.uk
I have another zone aaa.co.uk which has an a record pointing to the IP address of my FE server
Is this right ? the Lync 2013 clients all sign in internally ok although there is some delay.
I haven't got an lyncdiscoverinternal record and i dont know where to put this ?
If i add a new cname or A record the fqdn is appended eg lyncdiscoverinternal.sip.aaa.co.uk
so how does this work ? I am not sure what DNS records to put where anymore this is not straightforward.
As a side note i have external access working and have external DNS records all set up and lyncdiscover.aaa.co.uk point to the reverse proxy but it can be slow to log in and i think i need the internal records working.
    any help please

Let's clarify a couple of things as well:
    - Pinpoint DNS is only used when your SIP domain = internet facing domain (i.e. aaa.co.uk) AND you do not want to host a copy of your internet facing domain on internal DNS. Some customers have 100's-1000's of internet facing DNS records and do not want
to have to manually maintain all of these records internally - this is when I see Pinpoint DNS used.
    - If you already host a copy of the internet facing domain on internal DNS, or the manual maintenance of the external records internally is not a problem, then Pinpoint DNS is not required. You simply have to manually create the DNS zone and
corresponding records within the appropriate DNS zone internally (i.e. aaa.co.uk).
    - Depending on how things are setup, many of the DNS records required for Lync are configured either externally or internally, not both. However, there are some that will be the same, but published to different IPs depending on how you connect (internal/external).
    For instance:
lyncdiscover.aaa.co.uk = external record ONLY (points to public RP IP)
lyncdiscoverinternal.aaa.co.uk = internal record ONLY (points to internal FE IP)
_sip._tls.aaa.co.uk = external record ONLY (typically points to "sip.aaa.co.uk" -> Lync Access Edge external IP)
_sipinternaltls._tcp.aaa.co.uk = internal record ONLY (typically points to "sip.aaa.co.uk" -> internal FE IP)
sip.aaa.co.uk = both internal and external (internal = internal FE IP; external = public Access Edge IP)
meet.aaa.co.uk = both internal and external (internal = internal FE IP; external = public RP IP)
    Hope this helps!

  • SSL VPN and Dynamic DNS - ddns on IOS

    Hello,
I'm trying to configure a SSL VPN tunnel via SDM on a 877 Router. The router gets the public IP address dynamically from the ISP, so I have configured the DDNS to access remotely to the router. I would like to know if it's possible to configure the SSL VPN to support the dynamic IP via SDM o CLI.
    Regards
    Gerard

Seems like i have fixed the problem using:
    webvpn gateway gateway_1
    ip interface Dialer0 port 443
    ssl trustpoint local
    inservice
However when the router is rebooted, it results in this error:
Invalid ip address First configure an IP address for the gateway
Any idea how to delay the webvpn commands at startup until dialer0 gets a dynamic IP ?

  • Dynamic DNS for ipv4 AND ipv6?

tl;dr: do you know any dynamic dns service and updater daemon that supports both ipv4 and ipv6?
    Hi,
ever since my provider supplied me with a proper dual stack account (real ipv4, real ipv6) for internet access I got some kind of little problem regarding the services I host at home. So this is mainly about email. I have a server sitting behind my router that has an open submission and IMAPS port. For ipv4 I've been using the NAT and dyndns features of my router (fritzbox) without any problem. For ipv6 there is no NAT (at least as far as my router is concerned). What I can do though is to open the firewall for incoming ports dynamically based on the interface identifier. So if someone wants to connect to an ipv6 address that would map to my server the router knows to not block the traffic. For this to work though I need update a dynamic DNS record with the public ipv6 address that my server gets to use (something out of the prefix my provider assignes me). This server is an arch linux box. I tried to use inadyn-mt with some systemd unit file I found through google but this does not seem to work right. When I'm in ipv4-only networks (on a mobile connection for example) I often can't resolve the right ip address of my server through dyndns. The thing is that my server doesn't know about a changed ipv4 address because this is handled by the router. It does only know about when his own ipv6 address changes/expires. Based on when this happens inadyn-mt might fire an update to dyndns and with that also pick up the new ipv4 address, but this is not guaranteed.
Any suggenstions, tool and/or service proposals? Is there a way dns-wise to add a CNAME alias just for A records and not for AAAA?

I currently use cloudflare as the DNS servers for my domain as it's free and allows to update certain records with their API. I only use it for IPv4, but since they support AAAA records, I assume it will work for IPv6 just as well. It should be quite simple for you to update the script to get the ip of a given interface instead of fetching it from the net.
    #!/bin/sh

  • Files are not correctly named and only 1kb in size - Music Downloads

I have encountered a different problem. I bought a music album on my Z10, and when i download it, the files are not correctly named and only 1kb in size.
No error is given when downloading, but when i open it, the phone switches to the music player and clains the file does not exist. When i look on the sdcard, there are files which contain something like this:
    <html><head><title>Object moved</title></head><body>
    <h2>Object moved to <a href="http://media.geo.7digital.com/media/error.aspx?errorCode=2001&amp;errorMsg=The%2btrack%2b'8638556'%2...">here</a>.</h2>
    </body></html>
Is there any way how I can deal with this problem?

Ok, does anyone from support read here? I bought this album on 23rd of March. Emails to the appworldsupport email adress from the confirmation email give me just the information back that "direct support is unavailable through this address" I would really like to finally listen to my music... As i paid for it. It still does not download... Is there any email address i can contact for this issue?

  • Creating Icons/Graphics for High DPI Displays, naming and sizing

I'm having to create and deliver graphics and icons for a native desktop windows applications that must support Windows 8.1 and variety of screen resolutions which ranges from standard resolution monitors to new 4k high density displays.
Typically for iOS you would deliver an icon using the following size and naming convention to support both standard and Retina 2x devices.
    Standard Resolution
    Icon-72.png (actual size 72x72 pixels)
    Retina Display
[email protected] (actual size 144x144 pixels)
For Android on a 4k device, you might do the following:
[email protected] (actual size 288x288 pixels)
My question is would you also follow this same naming and sizing convention for native Windows 8.1 desktop apps? I'm assuming you would, but I'm getting some pushback.
This is slightly new territory in Windows desktop, but I'm hoping there may be a few who have experience and offer there suggestions.
    Thank you and best regards,

You will probably get better feedback in the forum for the picture program you are using... what is that program? (Photoshop?)

  • An efficient means of n naming and organizing Groups in the address book

    Hello,
First, I hope you are having a nice day. If not, I hope it gets better soon!
Next, I would like to provide the following before explaining:
Here is an article regarding a novel means of uploading pictures with descriptions from a Mac to Flickr without a "third party" application.
A novel way to upload photos from a Mac, with a complete description, to Flickr [http://www.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474978195922].
    A very simple example:
Possible list of names in the "Groups" section:
    National Politicians
    California Politicians
    Texas Politicians
    Colorado Politicians
In the address book, the above would be organized in the following order with "N" names between. "N" is the other alphabetical names:
    California Politicians
    <N>
    Colorado Politicians
    <N>
    National Politicians
    <N>
    Texas Politicians.
    *Greater Efficiency*
In my opinion, the following is more efficient means of naming and organizing the address book:
    Politicians.National
    Politicians.California
    Politicians.Texas
    Politicians.Colorado
As long as the spelling of the first description and period are included, the latter will be organized as follows with "n" "group names" where "group name" is the "Politicians." group with a "name" between:
    Politicians.California
    <n>
    Politicians.Colorado
    <n>
    Politicians.National
    <n>
    Politicians.Texas
If the above four are the only names in the "Politician." "group name", the list would be organized as follows:
    <N>
    Politicians.California
    Politicians.Colorado
    Politicians.National
    Politicians.Texas
    <N>
    * The Colon and Problem with "linking" in Mail*
As a side note, I have noticed some Library of Congress links do not "link" in Mail. As an example, I recently noticed that I could not "link" the following "URL" because there was a ":" at the end. If the ":" is not present, the URL will lead to a different page. I will be contacting Apple technical support and report this problem, but, I have figured out a way to circumvent this problem. I explain below.
+Link with colon and then a colon and zero+
    • Library of Congress: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:S.2925:
If you paste the above link into the Mail message body and select "Edit" » "Link" » "Add" and "Paste" the link into the text box, the "Add" button will not be triggered. If the ":" is removed, the "Add" button will be triggered and highlighted. Sadly, the link will be incorrect.
    Circumvention
In the above case, the solution is quite simple. Just add a zero, "0", after the colon, ":" , as such.
    • Library of Congress link with a zero: http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/z?c111:S.2925:0
The above link works and Mac's Mail "Add" feature will add a properly working link to the message body.
By the way, please ask your Congressional Representatives to support the above bill!
Have a nice day! By the way, I am a Chemical Engineer in search of employment! :•)

So how the Addressbook's Group List would look after syncing with the Soho Organizer's Contacts Subgroups organization? If Address book don't have that ability of Subgrouping.
I have been researching after a while now every single possible way without a luck. Please let me know if you find a solution.
Here are a are a couple of interesting apps that are taking contacts organization more seriouslly. But still dont have the answer for it.
    5degrees.
    http://www.5degrees.us,
    $9.99 a month
    Desktop and iphone.
    Bento
Great for customizing the contacts template.
    Also an iphone app.
    http://www.filemaker.com/products/bento/
My favorite would be Cobook Contacts since they also have the iphone app. Very clean design.

But still, none of this have the Subgroup organizing feature.

  • SAP NetWeaver component naming (and numbering)

I have noticed this week (10-Oct-2005) that a number of the NetWeaver components have been renamed. For example, Enterprise Portal now seems to be called NetWeaver Portal, etc.
What is the next 'evolution' of SAP NetWeaver component naming (and version numbering)?

    Hi,
Just to add to my colleagues response. The SAP NetWeaver components are actually going away (they still exist for historic reasons). The new approach will start with SAP NetWeaver 2004s.
Because of the growth of SAP NetWeaver technology and the reuse of features from one component in another and in new capabilities there is little sense in retaining the components naming.
Is BI still BI if new functionality means you always access it through a portal for admin and query execution?
So as the portal needs J2EE, BI will requires ABAP, J2EE, Portals, kmc, and BI from SAP NetWeaver. Is this the same old BI? We don't think so.
This simply stops making sense to have pigeon holing component names on an ongoing basis especially when you start really blurring the lines between 'components'. They do not work!
So SAP is now delivering SAP NetWeaver features and functions as IT Practices and IT Scenarios. These replace the component based rollout of SAP NetWeaver. For more information see the SAP service marketplace (http://service.sap.com/netweaver)
You will still see the SAP NetWeaver 'fridge' slide as this is showing capabilities of SAP NetWeaver (example: BPM and Integration broker). Their will be more and more capabilities added as we add more meaningful groupings of technologies (example of recent ones: SAP NetWeaver MDM and Visual Composer).
So, in short the component names are going away and being replaced by IT Practices/IT Scenarios.
    I hope this helps,
    Mike.
P.S. Release numbers also history for SAP as we don't have components - so you will only see SAP NetWeaver release names like 2004s.

  • How do I restore text erased from a .txt document, named and saved frequently, and on Yosemite OSX?

How do I restore text erased from a .txt document, named and saved frequently, and on Yosemite OSX?

    1. I have no reason to doubt it, the task is pretty simple.
    2. You should realise that these are not rewrites but progressions. PDF 1.7 adds just a little to PDF 1.6, and so on. Early versions of Acrobat would always update the version number to the latest version, whether or not they needed to do so. More recent versions have got smarter. Sounds as if XI is smarter still and is writing the version number actally needed rather than just the highest number it knows. People have strange ideas about PDF version numbers and sometimes want to do things like "open and save in the latest version" but this is not just useless but meaningless.
    3. In many cases the first line of the PDF contains the version number (but not the extension number), but this need not be accurate as a later piece of information (much later and harder to find) can override it.

  • Named and Concurrent users

    Dear Friends,
Please help me to find named number of users in PeopleSoft specific to module.Below are the modules i am using and i wanted to know named and concurrent users using these modules
    Human Resources
    Benefits Administration
    Pension Administration
    Thanks
    Uday.

    Hi Bart,
Difference between named users and concurrent users:
Named user means when you buy BOXI you buy a certain amount of named user licenses and then you give each of these named users a login. It`s a cheaper type of license but you have to know exactly who your users are, and so is pretty useless if your userbase is constantly changing or your exposing Infoview over the web.
Concurrent user licenses are now only available in BOXI Edge - the equiv in BOXI Pro\Premium is a CPU license, which means you can let as many people login as your hardware will support. Concurrent user licenses are useful when you don`t know who your userbase is - you can just give a generic login for people to use. Or give people specific logins and not worry that they might not be using the system and using up a valuable named user license.

    Hey there Luba_kalstad,
It sounds like you are unable to join your network and cannot see it in the Wi-Fi list in Settings. I would try the troubleshooting outlined in this article named:
iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1398
Be sure you're in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your Wi-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
Confirm that your Wi-Fi router and cable or DSL modem are connected to power, turned on, and connected to the Internet. If not, refer to your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP) for assistance.
    Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
    Tap and Forget this Network.
Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.
And this section down toward the bottom if needed:
Unable to locate a Wi-Fi network
Verify that the network is available by tapping Settings > Wi-Fi and choosing from the available networks.Note: It may take a few seconds for the Wi-Fi network name to appear.
Move closer to your wireless router (access point) and attempt to locate the Wi-Fi network.
If you do not see the network you would like to join, you may be attempting to connect to a hidden network. Learn how to join a hidden network.
Supported Wi-Fi configurations vary by iOS device model. Find out which standards your device supports3.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Note: This will reset all network settings including:
previously connected Wi-Fi networks and passwords
    recently used Bluetooth accessories
    VPN and APN settings
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

You installed a hacked app, originally from the Mac App Store. It contains the receipt for a different app, downloaded using an account that you don't control. You need to identify and remove the hacked app.
Important: The app you need to remove is not necessarily the one named in the App Store notice. For example, if the App Store says you need to update "Twitter," the hacked app may be "Angry Birds" or something else entirely. Don't make any assumptions about which app you're looking for. To find it, you have to carry out a systematic search.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kMDItemAppStoreHasReceipt=1
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
In the Finder, press the key combination command-F to open a search window, or select
    File ▹ Find
from the menu bar. In the search window, select
    Search: This Mac
from the row of tokens below the toolbar. Below that is a popup menu initially showing Kind. From that menu, select  Other...
A sheet will drop down. In that sheet, select Raw Query and click OK or press return.
Now there will be a text box to the right of popup menu. Click in that box and paste (command-V).
The search window will show all the App Store products you've installed. Compare those search results with the list of your purchases from the App Store. To see the complete list, you may need to unhide hidden purchases. If any apps were download from the App Store using other Apple ID accounts that you control, sign in to the store under each of those ID's and check the purchases.
At least one of the items listed in the search window is not among your purchases in the App Store. Move each such item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator password. Empty the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Test.
