[OS X] display live isight webcam video

I'd like to show live video (from the iSight webcam on my macbook) in a view. I'd also like to scan each frame and possibly change some pixels.
There are a ridiculous amount of APIs that I've come across in researching this: QuickTime, CoreImage, CoreVideo, Quartz, OpenGL, etc.
I found the sample-code project QTQuartzPlayer which is able to display live webcam video (and move the OpenGL camera). However, I've had some trouble dissecting the code, because of the various barely-documented API calls.
It seems like this line is the only thing that references the webcam in some way; It opens the default sequence grab component (which happens to be the webcam).
// SeqGrabComponent _grabber;
_grabber = OpenDefaultComponent(SeqGrabComponentType, 0);
It also seems that the stream from the webcam needs to be decompressed (using ICMDecompressionSession).
Anyways, can anyone give me some tips on how to accomplish this? In particular, look at/change pixels in each frame.

    Hi AbSoiLoki,
Thank you for your reply. I have been able to locate a couple of different options here for you to try. There is a previous post for a different printer that is having the same issue with the printer mapping a Z:folder.

How you select among connected cameras depends on which application you are using to operate your iSight. Here is how camera selection works in a few examples:
    (1) For iChat, you can choose which iSight you use in the "Camera:" choices bar in iChat > Preferences... > Audio/Video that appears when more than one compatible camera is connected. Although your camera choices will be different, the choices bar will look something similar to the Preferences settings shown here:
If you cannot see the "Camera" choices bar, your Mac is recognizing only one (or none) of your iSights. In that case, consider the suggestions from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2090
This particular choices bar solution applies ONLY to iChat. Most other applications also have settings that allow you to choose which camera to use. However, they do not all work the same way.
    (2) For instance, iMovie HD's camera choice is NOT set via Preferences. When you have more than one compatible camera connected, iMovie uses a drop-down menu choice something like this (depending on which version of iMovie you use):
Note: Because I had no built-in iSight connected when I made this example, and because my external iSight was not connected, the drop-down menu showed only "Time Lapse." Because your Mac has a built-in iSight, your built-in iSight would show in the drop-down menu even when no other camera is connected. Connecting an additional Mac compatible webcam should allow you to choose either camera.
iMove 9 (from iLife '11) uses a different camera choice button shown in this article:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/9.0/en/mov39f84285.html
iMove 8 (from iLife '09) is slightly different as explained in this article:
      http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iMovie/8.0/en/10172.html
In general, you can use your Mac's help for the application in use to find out how to select among more than one connected camera.
    (3) Photo Booth in Snow Leopard 10.6.x uses the Photo Booth > Camera menu command to select which camera to use.
Note for readers with older Mac OS X: The previous version of Photo Booth that came with Tiger (10.4.x) is such a simple, basic app that it offers no menu selectable choice. Unless your built-in iSight is already occupied as the camera being used by some open application before you launch Photo Booth, Photo Booth will use ONLY your built-in iSight.
However, you can use the trick from ¶ 4 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302781 to let Photo Booth use an external camera.
(If you have an external Firewire camera connected, it may be used in preference to any USB webcam. If that is a problem for you, merely disconnect the problem Firewire device.)
    (4) For FaceTime, launch the app and click the Video menu item.
If your Mac recognizes more than one connected compatible camera, a "Camera" section listing the cameras from which you can choose will appear there. Clicking on the desired camera name will let you select the one you want as shown in this image from my Mac Pro and LED Cinema Display:
If your Mac recognizes only one compatible camera, the "Camera" section will not appear in the Video menu, but FaceTime will automatically use the connected camera that is recognized by OS X.
    (5) For other apps, see Help for each app for info on how to select your desired camera.

  • Webcam Live! Capture Video Not Working

I have Creative Webcam Live! Previously, I was able to use the capture function to take small video clips.
I am no longer able to do so. When I attempt to Capture a video, the screen freezes but the time does start to count up as if a video is taking. When I stop the capture, a video clip box appears on the right hand side, but it's blank. When I attempt to play the blank box, the little indicator that scrolls across the bottom of a video when it plays moves about an inch and keeps looping. Please help. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the software. Still doesn't work. Thank you.

    Hi,
I'd suggest the following. First thing to do is to see if there is a live video being displayed in the webcam app. Assuming that there is then it would look like the camera is installed correctly.
There may be another capture device interfering with caputre so what would be a good idea would be to clear out the C windows twain and windows twain 32 folder. Backup the contents first then delete. You'll have to reload the camera software afterwards
    Hope this helps

  • This device cannot start. (Code 10) for built-in iSight webcam on Windows 7 Ultimate

The built-in iSight webcam of my MacBook Pro 15 inch (late 2009, early 2010) suddenly became not working toady on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit (Bootcamp) with a yellow ! on the device on Device Manager.
I rebooted the MBP to MacOS X and the device worked just fine using Skype.
I disabled/enabled it under Windows 7 but the built-in iSight webcam simply did not work.  I uninstalled and reinstalled the device driver but it still did not work.  I downloaded Microsoft Fix-It software but still could not fix it.
I am sure this is just a device driver issue and the last thing I remember is that there was an automatic WIndows update run at the end of yesterday.  Perhaps a Windows patch broke the device driver.
    Paul

I updated Skype and my iSight video would not work when running Windows 7 64 bit natively in bootcamp.  I have a 2009 Mac Pro with a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display and an ATI Radeon HD 5770 video upgrade card.  After some hunting around, I found out that bootcamp is up to version 5.  Apparently, it does not automatically update.  I downloaded the update from the Apple website, unzipped it, and copied all of the unzipped files to a USB thumbdrive (FAT formatted) as instructed on the download site.  Then I was able to install the update from the thumb drive.  The iSight works perfectly now with Skype running Windows 7 64bit.
    Hope this helps.

  • Live! Cam Video IM Pro (VF0410) HELP!!!!

i bought this webcam today - Live! Cam Video IM Pro (VF0410) - but i can't get it to show in black and white.
Anybody who can help getting my webcam black and white?
    thank you!

I too have the same problem. It seems to be a flaw with the software or the hardware. If you disable the auto exposure setting the frame rate will still site at 4-5 fps.
If you then move the exposure slider to the far left and then back to the right the frame rate will immediatley increase to 20-30 fps, but the exposure is quite poor even with the adjustment of brightness, contrast, etc. Is this a software bug or a hardware flaw?

  • LED Display's iSight and Photo Booth

I read the instructions for setting up iChat to use the Display's iSight, but Photo Booth still uses my MacBook Pro's iSight. Is there any way to change this? There's nothing about it in the manual.

I have this problem as well (iChat is fine using the display's iSight, Photobooth does not use it).
Posted another problem elsewhere here related to the USB audio speakers in the display causing jittery/poor HD full screen video playback (turn off display speakers then the playback is fine/smooth). This also needs to be fixed... curious if others see it (I'm running a v2 Macbook Air).

  • Why won't my iSight webcam work with iChat?

I have an iSight webcam and a Power Mac G5. I can't get the iSight to work with iChat, but it works with Yahoo Messenger, although the image is choppy. I have cable internet access, and I am connected to a wireless router (though not wirelessly, but with an ethernet cable). Is the router somehow interfering with iChat and the iSight camera?

    Hi Tim,
On a slightly different note does the iChat Open ?
If you click on the green Video icon next to your own Buddy pic at the top of the Buddy List do you see your Preview ?
DO you have any Buddies yet ?

  • How do I bypass isight webcam

looking to bypass my isight webcam in favor of a logitech USB webcam. Does anyone know how to do this? thanks, <Edited by: Host>

    Hello andrewsangst11
As Kenichi Watanabe has already told you, different apps use different methods of camera selection.
Here is how camera selection works in a few example:
    (1) For iChat, you can choose which iSight you use in the "Camera:" choices bar in iChat > Preferences... > Audio/Video that appears when more than one compatible camera is connected. Although your camera choices will be different, the choices bar will look something similar to the Preferences settings shown here:
Most other applications also have settings that allow you to choose which camera to use. However, they do not all work the same way.
    (2) For instance, iMovie HD 6's camera choice is NOT set via Preferences. When you have more than one compatible camera connected, iMovie uses a drop-down menu choice something like this (depending on which version of iMovie you use):
Note: Because I have no built-in iSight, when my external iSight is disconnected, the drop-down menu shows only "Time Lapse." Because your iMac has a built-in iSight, your built-in iSight will show in the drop-down menu even when no other camera is connected. Connecting your external iSight should allow you to choose either camera.
    (3) Photo Booth is such a simple, basic app that it offers no menu selectable choice. Unless you make your built-in iSight the camera being used by some open application before you launch Photo Booth, Photo Booth will use ONLY your built-in iSight.
However, you can use the trick from ¶ 4 of http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302781 to let Photo Booth use your Firewire external  iSight:
    • Connect your external iSight and turn it on.
    • Quit Photo Booth (PB) if it is running.
    • Launch any app with a user-selectable camera "Preferences..." menu command.
(The "tip" suggests that you use iChat, but others should work as well.)
    • Open "Preferences..." and set the camera "Preference" to use your built-in iSight.
    • Now launch PB. PB should now use the external iSight
because your built-in camera is in use by the other application.
    (4) For apps other than those above, see their Help or other documentation.

  • MacBook (2006) HDTV Secondary Display Issue (no streaming video)

I've searched the discussions as thoroughly as I could before posting. I do not have the same issues as many others connecting their Macs to HDTVs for primary or secondary display.
I recently bought a Sony Bravia (KDL-32EX710) and displays the desktop beautifully at 1080p with just the Mini-DVI to VGA cable. However, the only thing it does not display, without a workaround, is streaming video from websites like YouTube, various Gawker media sites and similar sites. For example, going to YouTube loads the entire page with playlists, comments and the audio comes through but nothing but a black box where the video should be (controls are also hidden).
To view videos, I have to drag the Safari window to the MacBook's display to start the video then move it back over to the secondary display to view it. Or, I have to enable the video to be viewed in fullscreen (usually by chance) to be able to see the video.
Watching videos from the local/network drives are fine. Watching streaming videos from Netflix are fine (via Safari). Does this seem like a Flash issue as the problem videos seem to depend on Flash?
    Message was edited by: fantastikot

It seems updating Flash (for Safari, Firefox and Chrome) did the trick.

  • How can I display three images in video rate succession (60 Hz)?

For a structured illumination microscope application, I have developed a VI that creates three images and displays them in rapid succession (as fast as the loop will go) on a second monitor.
From the naked eye it's pretty apparent that the loop is not displaying the images at video rate.  Is there a way (perhaps with some sort of buffer) to get them to display faster?  Is WinShow simply not going to be fast enough, and if not, what's an alternative method of displaying the images?  If it helps, the images need only be displayed once each (the loop was just for testing).
Also, what is a way to measure the frame rate output of the images?
(sorry for the sloppy code, new to LabView)
    Thanks,

    Hello,
Why don't  you try drawing one window, call IMAQ WindShow once outside of the loop, then redraw that window each iteration within the loop.  Hopefully this stops the flutter of the window.  You can build a 3 element array of the 3 IMAQ images then use an index array to alternate through which image you want to be redrawn into the single window.  The constant calling of IMAQ WindShow seems messy.

what cable do i need to use to connect my grandson's old style external isight webcam to his 2014 Mac mini in order for him to be able to FaceTime me

You need either a FireWire 800 to FW 400 cable or a FR 800 (male)/FW(female) adopter.
However. it the Mini (note that you still have the late 2012 Mini, Apple has not updated the Mini since then) has Mavericks it may not work satisfactorily. I tried it on my 2102 and I get abount 1 frame every 20 seconds. Another uses posted same problem.
However, it it work fine on my late 2009 Mini with Mavericks
