OS X Server for photo business

Hi
I am an event photographer, and I am currently using 5 iPads to sell photos on site at events.  I normally do not have internet access at event sites, so cloud type services are not an option, and I would like to use a Mac Mini to wirelessly serve the images to the iPads.
At the moment, I'm finding downloading the images to the iPads is taking way too much time, and I'm losing sales.  Most events would be a minimum of 3000 images.
I'm wondering what options I have for this?  I don't need a shopping cart on site, I want a very simple way to create galleries and just show photos with their file names on the iPads.
My web site currently uses a customized MySQL database to sell the photos on line, so I'm wondering, could I do the same by placing another MySQL database on the Mac Mini, and use Safari on the iPads to view photos wirelessly?

Thanks so much for the replies!  More details,  the photos are downloaded with a MacBook Pro, and originals are stored in an external hard drive.  They are processed in Aperture, and small jpgs are made for the iPads and put on the desk top in a folder structure.
The iPads are currently using the Portfolio app. The iPads connect directly to the computer via wifi using computer-to-computer network.  Photos can be downloaded to the iPads via a Portfolio "helper" on the computer that uses local wifi, or via Dropbox. The venues I shoot at usually have no internet access so the Dropbox method is not practical.  I don't have a cell phone either.
I've used both methods, but both take too long.  The local wifi method requires pulling the iPads away from the customers, and typing in the folder names on each iPad separately, then waiting while they download.  The Dropbox method retains folder structure, but I found out large numbers of photos downloading on 5 iPads really slows down the process.  Plus, if the iPad is touched during the download, it cancels.

  • What is the best server for my business?

Please see our current set up:
I work for a company that hosts a corporate site and multiple sub sites (drupal)currently about 10 sub sites but always expanding
We have a shared hosting account with our provider and a g5 powerpc running mac osx 10.5 on our local server
    2.5Ghz processor
    2g Ram
    Dual core processor I believe?
At times our web browsing can be very slow
We have approx. 20,000 users in our database that will be accessing most of our microsites and corporate site
We share documents and filesword, excel, and a lot of graphic files (psd's, eps's, etc.)
    What we want:
We would like to store everything locally to increase security
We would love increased speed in comparision to what we're used to now
We may be interested in the various lion osx server features but our major concerns are listed above
What would you recommend we get for a server knowing our expectations
What other benefits are there from having an in-house server as oppose to renting one through a provider

The first place to start looking is your network topology: what is your backbone connection to the WAN (Internet) and your internal LAN configuration?
Serving multiple sites to the WAN is not a problem providing that you have sufficient outbound bandwidth to serve the connections without bandwidth choking. A few (2-10) sites with low loads (requests) can be served through business-class DSL or cable; beyond that, start looking at T1 or better backbones.
Internally, in this day and age, having Gigabit Ethernet backbone is almost the standard; 100BaseT is okay.
Server-wise, your box is getting aged and newer hardware is going to give you better performance as well as software compatibility. Spreading services load (DNS, Web, Email, OpenDirectory) across two or more servers will keep one box from lagging on requests.
Lion Server is capable of serving your needs - a couple of Mini's w/Lion Server could work - but I'd also suggest you examine other hardware and OS (like Ubuntu Server) as also viable options.
I understand the desire to move things internally. You gain the benefits you mentioned. But you also become responsible for security and backup of all your sites, files and systems. Look long before you make the move - it requires research, planning and dedication to take on being a full-on SysAdmin..

  • Change the Releated Integration Server for all Business Systems

    Hello,
    follow Scenario:
We export the SLD entries from a Development System in a file.
Now we want to import the Entries in our Prod.-System, and we
have to assign (or change) to other Related Integration Server.
e.g. the esported Business System has in Development the
Related Integration Server D12, but in the Productive System we
    need P12.
Is there a other possibility as  to change first things first.
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Stephan,
I think this is not the correct approach because development and productive systems are different. You must register your technical systems by means of RZ70 transactions. If you have two different landscapes (DEV, PROD) you must register on two SLD servers.
    Doc about SLD: https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/b09fe69e-46be-2a10-9fb0-9c11aeaa3557

  • Setup a Mac mini server for small business

Im trying to come up with a solution for a families small business.
theres two of them that operate it out of their home and need something central to access all the company data and documents.
one travels and one stays back, so the one traveling all they do is forward an email and thats the current documentation they have is in email, no database or file archiving.
we also want to get their old files and documents scanned in and accessible too, instead of digging through boxes of stuff.
they also would like remote access while on the road to access their data, i presume they may use macbooks and possibly iOS devices.
I was thinking a mac mini, and an airport/time capsule for backup purposes and remote accessibility.
any suggestions on file management and remote access?
    thank you!

    Thanks for those suggestions.
They need file sharing on the road, away from the home office. I think I understand the concept, but aside from my own personal set-up of OS X server and back to my mac type things, its not really business-y in my opinion to offer them.
Unless they believe it will good enough.
So how would i set-up dyDNS? i have a test system i can work with if there are steps you'd recommend?
I just want to offer them a way to access their documents while traveling to sites through the Apple ecosystem.
BackBlaze, i hear about this, my only concern is if this company disappears then what? yknow. Crash plan is a nice alternative, but I'm looking for inside the Apple box methods here if possible.
    i really appreciate the ideas.

  • Mac Mini or Server for photo editing

    Hi everyone.
My early 2010 Mac Mini is starting to run slower, so I am going to get either a 2.7 i7 SSD 8Gb Mac mini with the AMD GPU or a 2.0 i7 SSD
8Gb Mac Mini Server with the HD3000 GPU. I do photo editing (not video) and general Office/surfing stuff, but no gaming at all. I particularly
need speed for running Nikon Capture NX2.
Which is the better choice please?

Either one will be an improvement.  The only question is whether
the Nikon software can utilize multiple cores in its processing.
If the software is highly multithreaded (able do do multiple things
at once), then the more cores the better.  Apps that have this
capability will actually run faster on a slower chip with more
cores than on a faster chip with fewer.  If the software does
any leveraging of GPU for processing, then the Mini with the AMD
    may be a better choice.
The one thing that may be an issue at this point is new Macs
will be shipping with Mountain Lion and the question is whether
the Nikon software will be compatible (some inventory on store
    shelves may still have Lion).

  • How to set up a basic file sharing server for my small architectural business?

I have no idea if I have posted in the correct area as this is my first forum post within the apple support community!
I have been using a 21.5" imac running 10.6.8 for the past 5 years to run my small home based architectural design business. I have been using the internal hard drive & backing up the necessary data to a simple usb external hard drive. I am now looking to firstly purchase a new imac 27" retina and purchase new autocad lt 2015 for mac software. I am looking to have another imac (my old mac) running in conjunction with the new mac. I want both macs to be able to access the same data and am slightly unsure what is the best way to achieve this.....As my old mac is currently only running snow leopard and an old version of autocad for mac 2011 it wont run on any more recent OS. Essentially i believe I have 2 main options with this.... (1) I Accept that I have to purchase 2 no. autocad lt 2015 licences @ a cost of £2300. Or option (2), I only run autocad on the new mac as this will be the primary station and the old mac used for primarily for admin & accounts. I have also recently discovered that it is possible to rent autocad licences for £300p/a which may also be another option (3)!
I previously had a problem where my hard drive failed on my mac & lost all data on the internal hard drive, luckily I had been backing up all data regularly to my external hard drive and now loss occurred! Obviously with any new system I want to ensure that my data is safe!
I currently utilise about 250GB of data for business operations but this will obviously grow with time.
In the future I would like to have the option of potentially being able to access the network data remotely via macbook pro whilst abroad although at this stage this really isnt my primary objective. Although I believe I could achieve this through apple remote desktop.
I suppose I should provide some information with regard to the required speed of the system...I regularly open 50-100 photos at the same time totalling around 250-500MB. I would like the system to be able to handle this fairly easily.
I have been trawling through forums and to be honest they are totally confusing me. I have also spent time on the phone to the apple business team and have also discussed my objectives with a member of the apple team in store.
There have been various options advised to me and I really do not know which is the most appropriate route forward.
1 - Using a mac mini as the file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the mac mini to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
2 - Using a time capsule as a file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the TC to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
3 - Using the new mac hard drive and linking the 2 macs via thunderbolt (old mac does not have thunderbolt and so I guess I would need another new mac?!) and then backing up the data to a time capsule.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!

    Hi sblemings,
    Welcome to the community.
I think with your scenario you should ask yourself, how complicated do you want the setup to be and how much time would you have to be able to resolve an issue should one occur with this setup.
All the options that have been advised would work but they come with complexity and therefore time.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!
    option 1
Would be a way to achieve what you want, it would centralise your files and you would only need to backup your file server (as long as all the files you wanted backed up were on it). This could be achieved either using the client and sharing various folders or using Server which would give you more options than you would possibly need.
    option 2
This is exactly like option 1 except that you wouldn't have to administer another mac however you may limit any future growth.
    option 3
This option I probably wouldn't pick, you could achieve this with firewire and use a firewire to thunderbolt adapter (saves you having to buy a new iMac)
    option 4
This option would, depending on your RAID level, give you disk redundancy but remember you would still need to back this up, as RAID is NOT a backup solution.
I would also ask is there a pressing need to keep the old iMac in service and complicating things by having a server / NAS? Could you not just transfer all your information over to this and continue with the one backup? I would say that doing it this was would be the simplest way of achieving what you want from what I can take from your question.
As for remotely accessing your data, if you have the right hardware the way to achieve this would be to use a VPN and connect back to your data. However a potentially easier way for you ,would be to use a service like logmein or teamviewer to connect back.
Hope this helps, and by all means any questions please ask.

How to set up a basic file sharing server for my small architectural business?

  • Recently backing up my ipad onto my macbook, which is the backup server for all of my gadgets.  This includes all my photos and tons of music.  The macbook said it could not backup the ipad because there was insufficient disc space to do so. What now?

I have a macbook operating OSX10.6.7.  Recently backing up my ipad which had lots of photos from a recent vacation.  I use this laptop as the backup server for all of my gadgets so it has thousands of photos and tons of music.  It just told me that it couldn't back up the ipad bc there wasn't enough disc space.  I was afraid that this would happen eventually.  What next?  Newer laptop with more space?  I'm not sure what files I could sacrifice to free up more space as most of these are important.

What size hard drive do you have in your MacBook? The cheapest options are, a larger internal hard drive, or an external drive. Or you could get a cheap desktop PC and network to it for storage. I've got one that lives in the hall with 3 Terabytes (That's 3000gb) of storage.

  • Setting up Snow Leopard Server with Address Book, iCal for Small Business

    Hello Folks,
I have a small business with 2-3 people and I want to setup Snow Leopard Server on a Mac Mini. I have everything in place, RAID, Backup drive etc.
What I need is a guide on how to setup the server correctly and how to setup Address Book Server, iCal Server, DNS, etc. I was in IT a long while back but have gone back to my creative roots and sworn off IT but I am in a situation where my IT guy's wife is pregnant so he is busy painting the baby's room, etc.
I was looking at Snow Leopard Server for Dummies and a few other books. Do you guys have any suggestions on resources for me to read or research that would give me very straightforward steps in getting this setup. I am at a point where I can re-install from scratch if needed.
For the ease of those that might respond let's assume I know my way around Mac and general networking as a whole.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Cheers,
    Jason

    Hi Guys,
First of, I will give you a brief background on me regarding networking as a mac user since 1994. I can setup and network multiple macs without a server in our home and small office. Turning file, print and internet sharing with a regular Mac OS X client version at no problem at all. This would be my first time setting up a Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server.
I'm in the same boat as Jakekub but we do not have a static IP from our DSL provider. We just bought a Mac Mini Server for our small office with 3 iMacs and 1 MacBook. We will just use the server for internal usage and to centralized things out and use some of server's features like Address Book, Mail, iCal etc. I've search the forums and found Orhidy's post here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2148553
I even followed the sample IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS Server and I think I had it correctly setup initially. And I think I got it all running on the basic setup base on his instructions. So I tried to test my DNS settings via Terminal > hostname then got answer as
    servername.companyname.private
And double checking DNS again with a command: sudo changeip - checkhostname and was given an answer of:
    Primary address = 192.168.1.192
    Current Hostname = servername.companyname.private
    DNS Hostname = servername.companyname.private
The names match. There is nothing to change
    dirserv:success = "success"
But here's another one that bugs me. I tried to follow from "Mac OS X Snow Leopard for Dummies" the command line:
    NSLOOKUP hostname
    and got an answer of:
;; Got SERVFAIL reply from 192.168.1.192, trying next server
    Server: 192.168.1.1
    Address: 192.168.1.1#53
** server can't find hostname: NXDOMAIN
So does it mean that I still haven't configured my server properly?
Thank you all for the help in advance!

    HI All,
IN SLD we have one Technical System for PI and one TS for R/3 System.
When I crating Business System for R/3 in R/3 TS, in Integration Tab what I have to select for Related Integration Server option.
It is having None and Business System of PI TS System.
    Please help me in this.
    Regards,
    Sree

    Hey
Looks like you are defining this Business system as a Integration server.
See here is what you need to do.
Step 1:First of all create a business system for XI system itself, this business system will have details of XI system and its role will be Integration server. You can have only 1 Integration server(hence you are getting the error).
Step 2:Now define a business system of type Web as ABAP for R/3 system, this system will have role as Application system but the related integration server will be the name of the business system of PI system(the one which you defined in Step 1).
As of now,are you getting any business system name in the drop down box for related integration server while creating business system for R/3 in SLD?
    If yes,then simply select that

  • Using OS X Lion as a Business Server for a Windows & Mac Enviroment

Hi there, I am debating on using OS X Lion (on a Mac Mini) as a server for a small business.  I have some lingering questions that I need help with.
If I am using OS X Lion as the mail server,
Does it provide any kind of online/web access (similar to OWA)?
Does it work with Mac Outlook 2011?
Will it work with Windows Outlook?
Will the messenger work with a Window's machine at all?  (i.e., remote employee on a Windows laptop.)
If I am using OS X Lion as a file server,
Can I restrict access to certain folders?
Is there a way to allow clients access to certain folders (similar to SharePoint)?
    Is there any FTP capabilities?
How secure is OS X Lion?  I work in a very contentious / data sensitive field.  The information we will have is highly confidential and highly sought after.
In the end, I am looking for a cost effective solution for a small group of consultants that deal with high profile matters, need to quickly and easily communicate and collaborate from both Windows laptops and MacBook Pros (90% remotely).
    Thanks for the help!

    And this is my problem.
    In windows terms:
I want to assign a drive letter to a network drive, and have that be a machine-wide assignment, that is activated during bootup, and is visible to all users and services.
I can do that for an arbitrary partition that is physically attached to the machine.
I cannot seem to do that for any partition that is mounted over the network.
    The problems are:
    1. It doesn't map for every user,
    2. It doesn't map for services that run when a user isn't logged in
    3. It generates annoying inconsistencies in what programs see what.
Is there really no way for an XP box to use a file server? Even a microsoft file server? (if there is, how do I make my mac os with samba look like a real microsoft file server).
Annoying tidbit: The "conncet at login" information is stored in the user profile; if you rely on that, then the user profile cannot be stored with the rest of the user's personal files. If it weren't for that, I could probably live with a work around.
(2 to 1 someone will say "Xp Professional can do that trivially" and tell me to upgrade. I thought XP home was supposed to support home and small office networking, and I thought that included a single shared file server.)

    Hi cjrinpdx,
According to the picture, it seems that we can use SSIS 2012 support is not included in SSDT-BI for VS 2013. And based on the previous versions, SSIS always different from SSRS, SSAS.
SSDT-BI for Visual Studio 2012 supports versions of SQL Server as follows:
SSAS project can target SQL 2012 or lower
SSRS project can target SQL 2012 or lower
SSIS project can target only SQL 2012

  • Purpose of a database server for Business Objects XI 3.1

    Hello Team,
I am quite new Business Objects and right now I am using Business Objects Enterprise XI 3.1.
when installing BO XI 3.1, I was prompted to select the database server to be created. I chose MySQL.
Now, I am curious to know the pupose/involvement of a database server for BO. I understand that the database is being managed/used by CMS and it has four main functions:
    Maintains security (users)
Manages objects (folders, reports, and program objects)
    Manages servers (services)
    Manages auditing (system auditor).
Is there any better explanation to the database and its purpose?
what does the database schema/user holds (any database objects,tables,etc..,)?
Does repository and database schema the same?
Are all the report objects, users and universe being stored in the database schema?
Thanks in advance for the reply.
    Regards,
    Kathir

the database server for BO XI 3.1 is needed to store the repository for the system which in another meaning the structure of the system itself.
yes the repository is the same as the schema, but schema is a database concept.
all the objects (universes, reports,,,,,,, etc) are stored in the FileStore of Business Obejcts system, but the structure of how those object are stored is exist into the repository database.
    good luck

  • Best way to setup Windows Server R2 for a business - Should I virtualize it?

I am setting up a server for a small business.  They are using it to run their software which access a SQL database, and they are using it for file sharing etc.  They have about 7 users accessing the server.  I wanted to set this up right
and since they purchased Windows 2012 R2 Server i know that it comes with 2 VM licenses.  I was thinking about using hyper V to setup a virtual machine and in that virtual machine setup their server for their database program and file sharing.
The main reasons I was thinking about setting it up this way is for the future.  If we want to put a new server with better hardware in the future, we could just transfer the Virtual machine over to the new machine without having to setup everything from
scratch.  Also from the research I have been doing there may be an added benefit to virtualizing it for disaster recovery.
I am still learning, and wanted to ask the pros what they thought the best practice should be in setting up a server like this.
I was planning on installing the GUI version on the host just because I am not comfortable with powershell yet.  I know the best practice is to install core and then setup your VM's that way, but perhaps I will change to that in the future.

In your case, virtualization is a good solution. It will leave you with easy options for future migration and disaster recovery. Using the GUI version is also a good idea. Not only is there no real reason to use a core server here, having the GUI also makes
it easier for them to log in and do small management tasks if that should be required.
