OS X Yosemite won't let my computer turn on

So here's the backstory: I just updated to Yosemite yesterday and after downloading and updating it everything was fine, I got the new layout of the doc etc, but then it told me I needed to update iPhoto and other applications so I did. Eventually my computer turned off and then went to the light gray screen with the Apple logo and a progress bar that only went to about half way then stopped. After 5 hours it was still on that screen. I had to "Command+Option+P+R" it to get it to crash and come back.
Now its working fine, a little slow, but here's the real problem now:
I was watching Netflix on my laptop, not connected to a powersource, and of course I was multi-tasking and cleaning as Netflix was playing so my laptop eventually died and I thought, "Okay, I'll just plug in the charger and turn it back on." Nope.
It was then stuck on the light gray screen with the progress bar and I had to crash it again to make it come back to the home screen with the doc.
Basically, if I ever want to use my computer I can't have it lose power. How can I fix this? Please help!

Uninstall CleanMyMac - get rid of it.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Download and install the OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Mail won't open and it won't let my computer shut down

mail won't open, the little light by the icon in the dock won't go away, it won't quit, and it won't let my mac shut down even if i let the battery die, it just goes to sleep until you plug it in. Someone please help me!!

Launch Activity Monitor (in /Applications/Utilities folder), find the Mail process, and force quit it from there. If this is NOT an admin-privileged account, then log out, log back in to an admin-privileged account, run Disk Utility Verify Disk. IF problems are reported, reboot from installer DVD and run Disk Utility Repair Disk from the installer DVD. Launch it from Utilities menubar item once the menubar is visible. If you are now running booted off the installer DVD, when repair disk is complete reboot normally and log back in to admin account and download 10.6.2 combo update from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL959 and reapply it. Then run software update from the  menubar item. Let us know if that works or not.

  • My iPhoto says it's still importing photos and it won't let my computer shut down, How do I fix this?

I've been trying to shut my computer down since last night after I unplugged my iphone after it synced, and Iphoto still says it's importing photos even after I stopped the import when the phone was done syncing. Is there any way to fix this? Or do I just need to let the computer completely die and restart it that way?

  • Mountain Lion won't let my computer boot..

I installed mountain lion, and it installed then when I restarted it, it sat at the gray Apple boot screen. I held option and ran disk utility to repair anything and nothing was wrong. Now I held option again and am using the "search the internet for help" option. Someone please help, how do I fix this? My iMac is late 2009

Well, I ended up booting into the Recovery partition and selected "Reinstall Mountain Lion".
After it downloaded for about an hour an a half it reinstalled the operating system and then had me restart the computer.
I restarted and instead of going through the setup process, I was asked to login.
The new password worked! and all my stuff was still there!
I guess it was good I didn't wipe the drive before doing the reinstall, not sure what went wrong to begin with but now things are going well again. Hurray!

  • Mail in Yosemite won't let me add one Gmail account but does another

After upgrading to Yosemite, m girlfriend is trying to add her Gmail to the Mail app but when she fills in the credentials, it just resets back to the same credential screen. Her Hotmail worked and so did an attempt to add my Gmail account. Does this have something to do with her account? Or could it be that she has her Gmail set up on a different Mac machine? Please help!

Did you ever figure this out? I opened a thread with a similar question: https://discussions.apple.com/activity?streamSource=connections
The one suggestion I got didn't work for me, so I'm hoping that you figured it out and you could tell me about it...

    grrrrrr.

Try resetting some of the hardware involved (PRAM~NVRAM). See this Apple KB for details, etc.:

Can't hurt to try, and apparently this has helped others recently.
Failing that, take it to an Apple Store and ask staff there for assistance.

  • Yosemite won't let me add HP printer

I don't print much, but after updating to Yosemite a number of weeks ago, I suddenly realized that my printers are gone from the Print/Fax control panel. I ahve an older HP 2200 laserjet and and Epson WF-3520. I did software update (I had to delete the hp printer folder first in order to get the download to work), and downloaded HP printer software v3. I got the latest drivers directly from Epson. Rebooted. Tried to add the HP, and the machine went to search for the software via software update (why?). Then it complained it wasn't available. Huh? I have the software installed on my machine. No luck adding the Espon either. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? I've never had trouble with printer drivers on OS X before, but this is not good.

The location of printing system files changed in Yosemite - requiring many, many updated drivers.
Try Resetting the Printing System and then Add the printer again.
The reset forces OS X to find (index) drivers - including ones you have recently installed!

  • WRT54GS won't let another computer connect....

My daughter is home from college and she has tried to connect to the linksys, I used a flash drive to set up her connection using the "add a device" feature.  When she downloaded it to her computer it said "unable to make a wireless connection".  Her computer is compatable with wireless as she uses it at school.  What else could be the problem??  I am REALLY not tech savy at all......so I will need very simple answers.....Thanks in advance for any help you could offer.

Hey try removing the preferred networks & also you could try checking if there is any utility on the pc & if yes try connecting with that utility & you should be able to resolve your issue.

  • I bought Aperature and PS from a university store, not under my apple username, now it won't let me update it to work with Yosemite because it isn't hooked to my username.  how do i fix it and get the upgrade

A few years ago or so i bought Aperture and Photoshop (the whole kit and caboodle) from a university subsidized store (my husband worked there and buying programs like those two, the whole Microsoft office Suite, all kinds of things) at a very significant discount, i think we paid 25$ for Photoshop vs the 400$ it was selling for on the open market.
Yesterday i upgraded most of my laptops to Yosemite (one of them I'm sure was the one that had Aperture on it, a 17in MacBookPro, its about 2 years old now, but at the time i bought it it was the highest computer apple had on the regular floor, I'm sure i could have added some stuff to customize it for extra, but basically we are talking top of the line computer.  I recently just required a 2012 MackBook Air with also fairly heavy specs from a family member that was upgrading (I'm not sure why, i know they couldn't possibly be using this thing for anything beyond its capacity, its basically new,  and they aren't 3D animation rendering and needed a "quicker" one).
I was very happy with the upgrade, and now it does work much more seamlessly with my iPads and my iPhone, but the whole reason i uploaded it was to work on pictures, adjust them, change the size and then print them out to include in jewelry, and Yosemite won't let me use Aperture at all, when i click to upgrade it (in the bar all it has basically old icon with a (no sign or ghost busters like sign over it) i click on it and it says, you did not buy this with your apple account name and i could not upgrade it.  But it just made me click ok, and did not give me any info on how to upgrade it.  i do physically own it, or my husband does, I'm not sure to whom it is registered, but sholdnt i still make it able to work with this new operating system, even if not through regular "software updates"  it used to always be asking me to upgrade "word" and i got that in the same way, so what is the issue and what do i do to get it to work on this new system?

Wow that was really quick, thank you so much.  Im not sure at all which version it was because i said it was around 4 years ago he bought it.  I know it isn't under his username, since he's a PC person (ugh) so i know its probably registered to one of our actual names.  isn't there some way to look it up since we did register it, because I'm not even sure where the disks are from when we bought it (we've moved a lot and also have two storage lockers, i know i would have kept it with other disks) but my cd rom drive is actually broken on my computer as well ( i think it got stepped on and is now squished and won't eject or run disks.)
So is there anyway they can look up that its registered to one of our names since we did register it when we bought and installed it, or do i really have to find the disk with some sort of proof of purchase (i know there would be no receipt after all this time)
either way, ill do what you suggested to the best of my abilities and thank you so much for answering my questions, i can't even open the program as its incompatible and find out the info from that) so I'm in a bit of a pickle and your response was so thorough and it didn't seem to be posted long enough to even write a well researched response, thanks, all the best,
    sarucia

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909a won't let computer boot up

I have an Officejet Pro 8500 A909a series connected to my HP computer running Windows XP Home. It was
working perfectly. Now it won't let the computer boot while it's connected to the computer. I can unplug the
USB cable from the computer and it boots fine. I can then plug the USB back in and the printer prints fine. I
ruled out bad USB ports as everything else USB works fine in the same ports. I put a brand new cable on and
had same results. I rebooted the printer and computer, with same results. I uninstalled the printer and drivers and
reintsalled with same results. Computer freezes at the screen where it askes you to use the up and down arrows
to select OS or wait for it to count down to 0. With printer unplugged it boots perfectly. This just started about
4 days ago. New printer. HP Support was at a loss when I did the live chat. Can anyone help?
Message Edited by ComSource on 06-15-2009 07:14 AM

    Hi,
The problem seems to lie in the installer, which has an unusual bad behaviour.  The installer puts the 8500 a909a in the list of USB  bootable devices.  (Not good!!!)
When the printer is disconnected it isn't a problem.  When the printer is connected the computer tries to boot from the printer and the computer hangs.
When I found the printer in the BIOS list of USB bootable devices I DISABLED that item in that list. Then it booted normally.
But now the BIOS takes an extra 30 seconds or so but boot up seems to be preceeding normally.
The guys on the CHAT and PHONE lines didn't even imagine the installer might be a problem so their advice was useless. They were blaming the computer.  More importanly, they didn't have a way to escalate the problem. They  had no capacity to respond in a flexible manner. It was like dealing with unhelpful staff in the county clerk's office.
