Howdy Asvin108,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you’re running into an issue creating Time Machine backups since upgrading your iMac to OS X Yosemite, which I imagine would be very frustrating. Take a look at the article below, it provides a lot of great information and troubleshooting suggestions that will resolve most issues with Time Machine backups.

  • After IOS 8 upgrade on phone, documents no longer synch in Pages.  I find out subsequently that when I upgraded it gave me iCloud Drive, which won't synch unless my computer has OSX Yosemite, which isn't available.  Apple says they can't get me back.

Apple upgraded me to a new IOS that has now eliminated my ability to synch Pages docs which I've been using quite successfully.  So now every time work in pages it tells me that my documents won't synch and to "upgrade to OSX Yosemite."  The problem:  Yosemite IS NOT AVAILABLE yet.  Will they let me go back to the old way until Yosemite is available?  No they will not.  I'm stuck with devices that won't work together.  I recall no warning that by upgrading to IOS8 would mess up my ability to use my devices as intended -- that my devices would be less compatible.  I feel duped and manipulated.  And to clarify, I only updated on my phone.  Once I saw (subsequent to update) that my synching of docs would no longer work, I decided not to upgrade my iPad mini.  But guess what -- just updating my iPhone has now changed me to iCloud Drive and that means that all of my devices are incompatible.

That happened to me. I rebooted and now my docs are back again.

  • Is there any way of backing up Apple calendar in OSX Yosemite?

I want an automated process/script that could run at a certain time of day and could back up my calendar automatically. I found a script that used to do so for iCal in earlier versions of OSX however since now iCal has been updated to Calendar the script is no longer valid.
Can somebody help me with automating the process of automating the process of backing up Apple calendar in OSX Yosemite?

DO NOT even TRY to use your drive.
    Get a new replacement kit.
    http://www.macsales.com
Boot off an external drive.  Use that.
Get the demo of Data Rescue 4, if it can find files, great buy it for $99.
You will need a drive to recover files to so pick up one unless you have a spare drive sitting around with enough storage.
After you have as much backed up or recovered as possible you can try other things to repair or do a secure erase to see if it is usable as a spare backup drive.
I would look at an SSD upgrade to replace the failing drive, and if you need RAM now would be the time.

  • TIP: DO NOT UPGRADE TO OSX YOSEMITE!!!

If you are on a Mac (unfortunately I'm forced to use one at the office), do not, I repeat, do NOT "upgrade" to OSX Yosemite. Adobe still hasn't figured out the conflicts between EA and Yosemite. I've been fighting issues all day with lock ups, etc. If you want to keep your sanity, wait to upgrade the OS until Adobe issues a patch.
On a side note, I can't wait to get back to my PC at home. No issues there...

    My user experience with Yosemite:
Both versions can be installed "side by side". I mean: Edge 4.0 and 5.0.1

  • Is there a way to disable mouse acceleration in OSX Yosemite?

i have used my dads iMac and MBP in the past and always noticed how bad the mouse response was in my opinion. Mind you, some people like the way the mouse responds in OSX and will probably have no idea what my issue is. That is mouse acceleration and the lack of option to disable it in the mouse settings panel. Here is a good explanation about what it is, also in the video is a visual example.
"Mouse or cursor acceleration, to put it simply, makes the travel distance of your cursor on the screen reliant of the velocity of your physical mouse movement rather than just the distance that you move your mouse. So making one movement of the same distance at two different speeds will cause two different relative cursor movements, with quick movement causing the cursor to travel a greater distance."
    source:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=16diwK6HWbI
So the thing i want to accomplish, is making the physical mouse movement one-to-one with the cursor speed on the screen. As an example: moving my mouse 10 cm would always make my mouse on the screen go 1000 pixels, no matter how fast i move my mouse.
I've had my mouse set up like that in windows and linux for quite some time now and i hope there is an easy way to set the mouse response like that in OSX as well.
I want to make clear that this isn't just an issue in games where you want to have great mouse precision. I have become really accustomed to this way of mouse response in any type of application. So the problem lies not in any mouse settings of any game/program. The problem lies in how OSX translates physical mouse movement to cursor movement.
Anyway, i ran into this issue about a year ago when i was using my dad's computer. i've had my own windows computer for some time now. An option to disable mouse acceleration in OSX Yosemite might have been implemented properly in the mean time. I have searched this community and found some old posts of people who had this same problem as me, but never read about any fix for it. The main reason i am asking this is because i am considering buying a Macbook.
I'd rather not use any third party software, but if there is any out that that just works and is easy to use, let me know.

Please don't be obnoxious to people like tbirdvet trying to help; nobody here owes you an answer, or anything else for that matter.
Anyway, Yosemite seems to enable mouse acceleration by default. You can disable it to get a constant pixels pointer moves / meters mouse moved ratio by typing this in terminal:
         defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling -1
you'll need to logout and log back in for changes to take effect. To restore the standard behaviour:
         defaults write .GlobalPreferences com.apple.mouse.scaling 2
    should do the trick.
    C.

Slow performance after installing Yosemite on an older Mac is often caused by inadequate memory. Although you can install the upgrade on a Mac with 2 GB of memory, experience has shown that at least 4 GB is needed for full performance.
Select About This Mac from the Apple menu. If you have less than 4 GB of memory, and your model has upgradable memory, install as much as it can take, or at least that much. Any reputable RAM vendor will have a web form in which you can select the Mac model and be directed to compatible parts.
Memory in the MacBook Air is not upgradable. If that's what you have, you should restore the previous system from a backup, or replace the machine. Ask if you need guidance.
The Etrecheck report clearly shows that SylvieRose has a Macbook Pro, not a Macbook Air and that there are only 2 GB  RAM installed.  The Etrecheck report can be very informative if one takes the time to examine it.

  • OSX Yosemite Wi-Fi: no hardware installed

    Hi ASC:
I installed Yosemite about 2 weeks ago, and at first my wi-fi (at home & work) was working fine, but then about a week ago the Wi-Fi icon at the top of the toolbar got an "X" in the middle of it and when I click on the Wi-Fi icon it says, "No hardware installed". I tried resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own (from another thread) but no luck. I've googled this, YouTube-ed it, but still no Wi-Fi back. Someone PLEASE help
    I'm using:
    OSX Yosemite
    10.10.1
    MacBook Pro (15-inch, early 2011)
    Thank you.

In some cases, this issue is caused by a hardware fault. A loose connection, a short circuit, or a microscopic break in a solder joint may open and close depending on temperature, making the failure intermittent.
Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already taken. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. If you can connect to the Internet via Ethernet, Bluetooth, or a USB network device, make sure all available OS X updates are installed. If Wi-Fi is your only means of network access, skip this step.
2.. There are a few reports that the problem was solved by unchecking the box marked
              Wake for Wi-Fi network access
in the Power Adapter tab of the Energy Saver preference pane. I can't confirm.
    3. Reset the NVRAM.
    4. Reset the System Management Controller.
    5. Start up in Recovery mode. In the menu bar of the OS X Utilities screen, there's a Wi-Fi menu. Try to connect. If it works, select Install OS X. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade, so make a note of those before you begin.
    6. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • Aperture no longer works with new osx Yosemite update

I installed new OSX Yosemite update and now it says that my Aperture App. will not work with this version. What can be done other than updating Aperture?

    Hi,
    It's a five step process
Call Apple Support for Software > Aperture
Answer questions at recorded message (have Aperture serial number ready – it is on a sticker on the back of the 'Installing Your Software' booklet) and you will be transferred to a real person.
Inform them of the issue and they will tell you that this is a known issue with certain users and they will request a 'Redemption Code' for the App Store for a standalone download of Aperture. The issue will be rectified in the next Yosemite release.
Wait for email from Support (they have to contact Support in California for redemption code, so depending on your time zone, there may be some delay).
Visit App Store, enter redemption code, and you are good to go.
    Hope this helps.

  • How can I return to use OSX (Yosemite) after installing Windows 8.1?

How can I return to use OSX (Yosemite) after installing Windows 8.1?
I cannot find Boot Camp on my iMac (late 2013) with windows installed. So I downloaded it, but I cannot run it because of an error (x64...). I tried to use my USB stick with bootcamp installed but nothing. When I turn my iMac on it starts automatically with windows. I tried to search it, but I found only the setup and it doesn't work. How can I get back to my APPLE iMac? How can I use OSX?
Excuse me for the (maybe) uncorrect language, I speak Italian.

    Hello!
You can start your Mac up with the [alt] (sometimes [option]) key pressed and you will get the Startup Manager.

  • Creative Cloud Desktop frozen/spinning wheel after updated version April 22,2015; Adobe Application Manager won't sign in either - Mac OSX Yosemite 10.10.3

I cannot update any apps via Creative Cloud Desktop Application just prior to nor after the April 2015 updated.
I've tried everything listed in support forums, including:
    uninstallation
removal of the AAMUpdater and OOBE folders in both the user and system libraries
use of the Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool
enabling the root user and cleaning everything out there and reinstallation from the root account
and reinstallation of both the Application Manager as well as Creative Cloud Desktop...multiple times.
I've also tried out the instructions to uninstall Java and reinstall the latest version of Java.  I have looked through every iteration of these issues on several support forums, and tried everything that has supposedly "worked" to get Creative Cloud Desktop back up and running.
I am on Mac OSX Yosemite 10.10.3.
I also can't sign in via the Application Manager, with message that I am not connected to the internet.  I can launch the versions of Photoshop CC 2014, Illustrator CC 2014, Lightroom 5, etc., but when I try to sign in to any of those applications, the Adobe Application Manager launches, asking for a sign in, and then won't connect...no matter what.  I have tried doing this from the root account with the firewall temporarily disabled as well.  I do not have internet connection problems whatsoever, and all other applications, browsers, etc., can reach all aspects of the internet just fine.
The most peculiar thing: I have another Creative Cloud installation on my MacBook Pro with the same version of Yosemite, and everything is loading and working just fine, with all the latest updates.  Duplicate installation for my laptop, and yet my iMac with the same installation won't work at all.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
I've attempted to repair permissions the usual way, as well as through a complete cleanup via Onyx.  Still no dice.
Creative Cloud Desktop was working previously, for quite a few months (with the occasional "can't connect" and inability to load the App Update panel, which seems to plague the software constantly anyway...but at least it worked intermittently) well after I installed Yosemite.
This is a more recent issue...just a few days ago...before installing the update, as well as after.

  • How to create/reset root password on OSX Yosemite

    Hi,
I am currently a standard user on a late 2008 Macbook Pro. There are two users on my computer, mine and another admin account. I do not know the password to the admin account. Before I upgraded to OSX Yosemite I had created a root user password in SUM using the command "passwd". After I upgraded (I reset my computer) I was back at square one, me as a standard user and another admin account that I didn't know the password. After I upgraded the “passwd” command didn’t work.
I tried to obtain the root password using multiple SUM commands like, "rm /var/db/ .AppleSetupDone" which didn't work because it said that it couldn't find the file. Then I tried to use the command, “/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.opendirectoryd.plist” and then entering “passwd”. However that didn’t work. (Everything I did was after I mounted the drive.)
So I was wondering if anyone on the forums knew of a way for a standard user to reset the root password without the knowledge of the admin password.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hey SamuraiPizzzaCat,
Thanks for the question. After reviewing your post, it sounds like you want to use automatic login. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help you resolve or isolate the issue.
OS X Yosemite: Login Options pane of Users & Groups preferences
    Automatic login
Choose Off to require users to log in whenever the Mac restarts.
To automatically log in a particular user when the Mac restarts, choose the user’s account name and enter his or her password.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

Apple ID has my old email address. It will not allow me to change the address and will not accept my password or ID questions.   I recently upgraded to OSX Yosemite 10.10.1.  I also have an Apple ID that works with iTunes and would like to keep it as my primary.

To change the iCloud ID on your devices you have to go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide the password for the old ID when prompted (if using iOS 7), then sign back in with your current ID.
If you don't know the password for your old ID, or if it isn't accepted, you will have to temporarily recreate it in order to delete the existing account.  To do this, go to https://appleid.apple.com, click Manage my Apple ID and sign in with your current iCloud ID.  Click edit next to the primary email account, change it back to your old email address and save the change.  Then edit the name of the account to change it back to your old email address.  You can now use your current password to turn off Find My iPhone on your device, even though it prompts you for the password for your old account ID. Then save any photo stream photos that you wish to keep to your camera roll.  When finished go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account and choose Delete from My iDevice when prompted (your iCloud data will still be in iCloud).  Next, go back to https://appleid.apple.com and change your primary email address and iCloud ID name back to the way it was.  Now you can go to Settings>iCloud and sign in with your current iCloud ID and password.

  • IPhoto Library gone after update to OSX Yosemite 10.10.3

Put another way, how do I get the new "Photos" program associated with the new OSX Yosemite v. 10.10.3 to see my former iPhoto library that is stored on an external hard drive?
    Here's the full story:
This morning I updated my MacBook Air to OSX Yosemite v. 10.10.3.  The update claimed that it ran successfully.  Afterwards, I plugged in my iPhone to sync it to the computer.  There were photos on my phone that I'd taken yesterday, so when I plugged the iPhone in to the USB cable, a program launched that I thought was iPhoto (but, as it turns out, is actually a new Apple program called simply "Photos").  I was led through a series of questions, one of which was "do you want to download your photos to iCloud?"  I did not want to download my photos to the cloud; first off, I've got like 100GB of photos and second off, even if there were that much space allowed with an iCloud account, I wouldn't have wanted to take the time.  After skipping that download-to-the-cloud step, the new "Photos" program downloaded the pictures taken yesterday off of my phone and deleted them from my iPhone as I'd requested.  But, when the transfer from phone to computer completed, I was taken to the new Photos program and the only pictures on my account are those that were downloaded this morning from my iPhone.
Because I've got so many photos I keep my iPhoto Library on an external hard drive.  I keep two additional external hard drives that back up everything every night.  I am not worried about the photos being lost, but I can't figure out how to get the new "Photos" program to go find that library on my external hard drive.
    All help appreciated.

To migrate your existing library to Photos is simple: just open it.
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch Photos. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You problem is that you will no have two libraries - the converted iPhoto one and the one you created with just these iPhone photos.
So I would export the pics from the new Photos Library to the Finder: (File -> Export-> Export unmodified  originals
Trash the Photos library from your Pictures Folder
    Convert the iPhoto Library
Then import those photos from the Finder.

Please test after taking each of the following steps. Back up all data before you begin.
    Step 1
Quit the Contacts or Address Book application if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBookSourceSync
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash.
    Repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.AddressBook
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 2
If you use iCloud, uncheck the box marked Contacts in the iCloud preference pane. Press return to confirm, or click Keep on Mac in the dialog that opens.
If you synchronize contacts with any other network service, disable that synchronization in the Internet Accounts  preference pane.
    Step 3
From the list of groups on the left side of the Contacts window, select All On My Mac. If that group doesn't exist or is empty, skip this step. Otherwise, from the menu bar, select
File ▹ Export... ▹ Contacts Archive...
Save the exported archive to the Desktop.
    Step 4
Quit Contacts. Reveal the following item in the Finder as you did in Step 1:
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
If you know when the problem started, and you can restore that folder from an earlier backup without losing any contacts, do so and test. Otherwise, move the folder to the Desktop, leaving the window open for now.
    Step 5
Launch Contacts. Your contacts and groups will be gone. If you took Step 3, then double-click the file you created in that step and confirm that you want to import from it. Your contacts and groups will reappear.
    Step 6
If you took Step 2, reverse it. Test. If the issue is resolved, delete the AddressBook folder and the archive file on the Desktop and close the open folder window.
Otherwise, quit Contacts again and put the AddressBook folder back where it was, overwriting the newer one that will have been created in its place.
    Step 7
Go back to Step 3, but this time choose Export vCard... from the Export menu. Continue as in Steps 4-6. All contacts should be preserved, but you may lose some metadata such as group membership.
