Output of exec command

Hi,
I'm trying to compile java files at runtime and I want to see the execution output into my eclipse consol or anywhere. I've tried different thing such as
          Runtime r = Runtime.getRuntime();
          String command="";
          command = "javac -verbose" +
                    " c:/workspace/helloworld.java";
          Process p = r.exec(command);
          Runtime r = Runtime.getRuntime();
          String command="";
          command = "javac c:/workspace/helloworld.java > c:/file.txt";
          Process p = r.exec(command);
But nothing seems to be output, I have no error/exception thrown in my eclipse console and the file isn't compile:\
Any idea?
Thanks

try
Runtime rt = Runtime.getRuntime();
Process proc = rt.exec("javac");
InputStream stderr = proc.getErrorStream();
InputStreamReader isr = new InputStreamReader(stderr);
BufferedReader br = new BufferedReader(isr);
String line = null;
System.out.println("<ERROR>");
while ( (line = br.readLine()) != null)
System.out.println(line);
System.out.println("</ERROR>");
int exitVal = proc.waitFor();
System.out.println("Process exitValue: " + exitVal);
} catch (Throwable t)
t.printStackTrace();
}

  • How to display Runtime.exec() command line output via swing

    Hi all, I'm new to java but have a pretty good understanding of it. I'm just not familiar with all the different classes. I'm having trouble capturing the output from a command I'm running from my program. I'm using Runtime.exec(cmdarray) and I'm trying to display the output/results to a JFrame. Once I get the output to display in a JFrame, I'd like it to be almost like a java command prompt where I can type into it incase the command requires user interaction.
    The command executes fine, but I just don't know how to get the results of the command when executed. The command is executed when I click a JButton, which I'd like to then open a JFrame, Popup window or something to display the command results while allowing user interaction.
    Any examples would be appreciated.
    Thank you for your help in advance and I apologize if I'm not clear.

    You can get the standard output of the program with Process.getInputStream. (It's output from the process, but input to your program.)
    This assumes of course that the program you're running is a console program that reads/writes to standard input/output.
    In fact, you really should read from standard output and standard error from the process you start, even if you're not planning to use them. Read this:

  • Strange behaviour of Runtime.getRuntime().exec(command)

    hello guys,
    i wrote a program which executes some commands in commandline (actually tried multiple stuff.)
    what did i try?
    open "cmd.exe" manually (administrator)
    type "echo %PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE%" and hit enter, which returns me
    "AMD64"
    type "java -version" and hit enter, which returns me:
    "java version "1.6.0_10-beta"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_10-beta-b25)
    Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.0-b12, mixed mode)"
    type "reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\7-zip"" returns me:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\7-zip
    Path REG_SZ C:\Program Files\7-Zip\
    i wrote two functions to execute an command
    1) simply calls exec and reads errin and stdout from the process started:
    public static String execute(String command) {
              String result = "";
              try {
                   // Execute a command
                   Process child = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(command);
                   // Read from an input stream
                   InputStream in = child.getInputStream();
                   int c;
                   while ((c = in.read()) != -1) {
                        result += ((char) c);
                   in.close();
                   in = child.getErrorStream();
                   while ((c = in.read()) != -1) {
                        result += ((char) c);
                   in.close();
              } catch (IOException e) {
              return result;
         }the second function allows me to send multiple commands to the cmd
    public static String exec(String[] commands) {
              String line;
              String result = "";
              OutputStream stdin = null;
              InputStream stderr = null;
              InputStream stdout = null;
              // launch EXE and grab stdin/stdout and stderr
              try {
                   Process process;
                   process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd.exe");
                   stdin = process.getOutputStream();
                   stderr = process.getErrorStream();
                   stdout = process.getInputStream();
                   // "write" the parms into stdin
                   for (int i = 0; i < commands.length; i++) {
                        line = commands[i] + "\n";
                        stdin.write(line.getBytes());
                        stdin.flush();
                   stdin.close();
                   // clean up if any output in stdout
                   BufferedReader brCleanUp = new BufferedReader(
                             new InputStreamReader(stdout));
                   while ((line = brCleanUp.readLine()) != null) {
                        result += line + "\n";
                   brCleanUp.close();
                   // clean up if any output in stderr
                   brCleanUp = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(stderr));
                   while ((line = brCleanUp.readLine()) != null) {
                        result += "ERR: " + line + "\n";
                   brCleanUp.close();
              } catch (IOException e) {
                   // TODO Auto-generated catch block
                   e.printStackTrace();
              return result;
         }so i try to execute the commands from above (yes, i am using \\ and \" in java)
    (1) "echo %PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE%"
    (2) "java -version"
    (3) "reg query "HKLM\SOFTWARE\7-zip""
    the first function returns me (note that ALL results are different from the stuff above!):
    (1) "" <-- empty ?!
    (2) java version "1.6.0_11"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_11-b03)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.0-b16, mixed mode, sharing)
    (3) ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.
    the second function returns me:
    (1) x86 <-- huh? i have AMD64
    (2) java version "1.6.0_11"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_11-b03)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.0-b16, mixed mode, sharing)
    (3) ERROR: The system was unable to find the specified registry key or value.
    horray! in this version the java version is correct! processor architecture is not empty but totally incorrect and the reg query is still err.
    any help is wellcome
    note: i only put stuff here, which returns me strange behaviour, most things are working correct with my functions (using the Runtime.getRuntime().exec(command); code)
    note2: "reg query "HKLM\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\CentralProcessor\0" /t REG_SZ" IS working, so why are "some" queries result in ERR, while they are working if typed by hand in cmd.exe?

    ok, i exported a jar file and execute it from cmd:
    java -jar myjar.jar
    now the output is:
    (1) "" if called by version 1, possible to retrieve by version 2 (no clue why!)
    (2) "java version "1.6.0_10-beta"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_10-beta-b25)
    Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.0-b12, mixed mode)"
    (3) C:\Program Files\7-Zip\
    so all three problems are gone! (but its a hard way, as i need both functions and parse a lot of text... :/ )
    thanks for the tip, that eclipse changes variables (i really did not knew this one...)

  • How can I run Runtime.exec command in Java To invoke several other javas?

    Dear Friends:
    I met a problem when I want to use a Java program to run other java processes by Runtime.exec command,
    How can I run Runtime.exec command in Java To invoke several other java processes??
    see code below,
    I want to use HelloHappyCall to call both HappyHoliday.java and HellowWorld.java,
    [1]. main program,
    package abc;
    import java.util.*;
    import java.io.*;
    class HelloHappyCall
         public static void main(String[] args){
              try
                   Runtime.getRuntime().exec("java  -version");
                   Runtime.getRuntime().exec("cmd /c java  HelloWorld "); // here start will create a new process..
                   System.out.println("Never mind abt the bach file execution...");
              catch(Exception ex)
                   System.out.println("Exception occured: " + ex);
    } [2]. sub 1 program
    package abc;
    import java.util.*;

    } [3]. Sub 2 program:

    class HappyHoliday
         public static void main(String[] args){
         System.out.println("Happy Holiday!!");
    } When I run, I got following:
    Never mind abt the bach file execution...
    I cannot see both Java version and Hellow World print, what is wrong??
    I use eclipse3.2
    Thanks a lot..

    sunnymanman wrote:
    Thanks,
    But How can I see both programs printout
    "Happy Holiday"
    and
    "Hello World"
    ??First of all, you're not even calling the Happy Holiday one. If you want it to do something, you have to invoke it.
    And by the way, in your comments, you mention that in one case, a new process is created. Actually, new processes are created each time you call Runtime.exec.
    Anyway, if you want the output from the processes, you read it using getInputStream from the Process class. In fact, you really should read that stream anyway (read that URL I sent you to find out why).
    If you want to print that output to the screen, then do so as you'd print anything to the screen.
    in notepad HelloWorld.java, I can see it is opened,
    but in Java, not.I have no idea what you're saying here. It's not relevant whether a source code file is opened in Notepad, when running a program.

  • Problem with output string to command

    hey i have no idea why this aint working
    its a simple output string to command.
    what it is supposed to do is make a new directory given by the input string
    e.g. mkdir /home/luke/dep
    thanks for the help
    //methods input save files
         saveFile = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Save Files To : ");
         //method command for saving files
         //Stream to write file
         FileOutputStream fout;
         try { Process myProcess = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("mkdir" + saveFile );
          InputStreamReader myIStreamReader = new InputStreamReader(myProcess.getInputStream());
          fout = new FileOutputStream ("file.txt");
          while ((ch = myIStreamReader.read()) != -1) { new PrintStream(fout).print((char)ch); } }
              catch (IOException anIOException) { System.out.println(anIOException); }

    What you fail to understand is that "aint working" and "Problem with output string to command" tells us absolutely squat about what your problem is. This is the same as saying to the doctor "I'm sick" and expecting him to cure you. As mentioned by Enceph you need to provide details. Do you get error messages? If so post the entire error and indicate the line of code it occurs on. Do you get incorrect output? Then post what output you get, what output you expect. The more effort you put into your question the more effort others will put in their replies. So until you can manage to execute a little common sense then the only responses you will get will be flames. Now is your tiny little brain able to comprehend that?

  • Alternative for EXEC command(Native SQL)

    Hi Friends,
             While Using the EXEC command in native sql it is showing the obselete Error  , Can  any one help  with giving the alternative for the commands for native SQl.
           Immediate

    In a Native SQL statement, data is passed between the ABAP program and the database using host variables. A host variable is an ABAP variable that is identified as such in the Native SQL statement by a preceding colon (:).
    Example
    Displaying an extract from the table AVERI_CLNT:
    DATA: F1(3), F2(3), F3(3).
    F3 = ' 1 '.
    EXEC SQL.
      SELECT CLIENT, ARG1 INTO :F1, :F2 FROM AVERI_CLNT
             WHERE ARG2 = :F3
    ENDEXEC.
    WRITE: / F1, F2.
    To simplify the form of the INTO lists in the SELECT statement, you can, as in Open SQL, specify a single structure as the target area.
    Example
    Displaying an Extract from the Table AVERI_CLNT:
    DATA: BEGIN OF WA,
            CLIENT(3), ARG1(3), ARG2(3),
          END OF WA.
    DATA  F3(3).
    F3 = ' 1 '.
    EXEC SQL.
      SELECT CLIENT, ARG1 INTO :WA FROM AVERI_CLNT
             WHERE ARG2 = :F3
    ENDEXEC.
    WRITE: / WA-CLIENT, WA-ARG1.
    Native SQL supports the directly-executable commands of your underlying database system. There are other special commands that you can use after the EXEC SQL statement for cursor handling, stored procedures (procedures stored in the database), and connections to other databases.

  • Save output of a command

    Hi all,
    I am trying to save the output of a command so I can read it and decide weather it completed successfully or not.  I am having trouble running the command though. It's working but the switches aren't.
    $Servers = Get-Content Servers.txt | Sort-Object
    ForEach ( $Server in $Servers ) {
    & PsExec.exe \\$Server 'C:\Program Files (x86)\progfolder\program.exe' option -t=$Duration -e=$email -c=$Comment -q=110
    When ran it complains I am not specifying any options/switches. Ideas?
    Thanks.

    Psexec can be very finicky with optional switches for the command you are trying to run through it.
    Try this and let me know if it works:
    $Servers = Get-Content Servers.txt | Sort-Object
    ForEach ( $Server in $Servers ) {
    & PsExec.exe \\$Server 'C:\Program Files (x86)\progfolder\program.exe' 'option -t=$Duration -e=$email -c=$Comment -q=110'

  • Gnome Panel applet that shows output of system command.

    Hi all;
    Because of the recent hostile takeover of #archlinux channel by tilling WM fanatics..    I will ask here..
    Does any one know of a Gnome Panel applet that shows the output of system command of your choice?
    For people who Conky is a bit too much and they only want a simple piece of data available (like what is the current IP on ppp0 interface) like me..  this is a necessity.
    If its not in existence I would probably make one.. shouldn't take long, I also would like to hear if there is any interest.
    Thanks

    That's exactly what I was looking for!  Thank you!
    Changed code to:
    $dism = "X:\Windows\System32\Cmd.exe /c start CMD /k dism /apply-image /imagefile:D:\W7x86.wim /index:1 /applydir:C:\"
    And voila, new window opened with the live output of dism.
    new... and have a glazed over look about my eyes to prove it...

  • "System Exec" command in NT / W95 How to use?

    Hi LVers,
    I can start the shell with the System Exec command with LV, but how can I put
    additional (batch) commandos into it?
    I already tried:
    - piping "cmd < dir"
    - batch files "mybatch.bat"
    Where are the differencies btw. NT and W95
    thanks
    tom

    I am not sure that I understand what you are trying to do.
    Anyway, in LVWUtil32.zip you can find some VIs that improve the use of System Exec[http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/3efedde4322fef19862567740067f3cc/824b3db43031317686256aaf00713218/$FILE/LVWUtil32.zip]. As far as I remember you have some good documentation inside.
    Also, you can use a KeyGenerator [http://hamiltondesign-consulting.com/ftpfiles/SendKey.zip] to send commands to a shell window (via keystrokes).
    Hope this helps

  • Exec command in App Engine Peoplecode stopped working in PT8.49.10 ??

    We run an a few app engine jobs that use the Exec command in peoplecode
    to call a bat file which moves a file from one directory to another (a backup directory).
    It had been working fine but since we upgraded to PT8.49.10, from PT8.47 the job abends
    at the Exec command with the following message:
    'Exec function error: (2,181) WC_FUNCLIB_HR.WC_FILENAME_IN.FieldFormula Name:wcBackupFile
    PCPC:799 Statement:9
    Called from:WCAPP001.MAIN.GBL.default.1900-01-01.Step03.OnExecute Statement:4 .'
    The actual statement it is abending on within the wcBackupFile function is this:
    &processid = Exec(&cmdstr, &synch);
    When re-creating the problem in our test environment I can see that:
    &cmdstr = "C:\temp\wcapp001.bat"
    &synch = False
    C:\temp\wcapp001.bat =
    cmd /c move /y \\dom_wfld\dfsroot\hr\files\req.csv \\dom_wfld\dfsroot\hr\bkup\req_20090318_112338.csv
    The command will work if I paste the contents of the bat file into a command line
    but it abends when called from the app engine program with the 8.49.10 tools.
    We are a DB2 shop.
    If anyone has some ideas regarding this I'd certainly welcome them.
    Thanks,

    Well, I figured out what the issue was and I appreciate everyone's suggestions made in this thread. The problem was that we actually changed our folder configuration when we went to PT8.49.10 (I know, a pretty big clue I didn't divulge in earlier posts) so now PS_HOME was a little different than before. The Exec command, if using boolean parameters (which we were) instead of Exec_constant + Path_Constant parameters, appends the PS_HOME value to the beginning of the path to the bat file. With the change in our folder structure the Exec command was not able to actually find the bat file to execute it. I made the change to using the Exec command, as follows, and it seems to be working fine. Here's what I changed it to: &processid = Exec(&cmdstr, %Exec_Synchronous + %FilePath_Absolute);
    Again, thanks for your suggestions.
