Overlay question

When I try to overlay instructions in a game I'm creating I get a script error.
So here's some excerpts of the code I'm using right now.
When the game begins
pIntro = 0
ch = g_world.newtexture("CrossHair", #fromcastmember, member("CrossHair"))
  g_world.camera[1].addoverlay(ch,point(400,300),0)
  ch.renderformat = #rgba8888
As the game is running
if pIntro = 0 then
    Aa = g_world.newtexture("Intr01", #fromcastmember, member("Intr01"))
    g_world.camera[1].addoverlay(Aa,point(160,340),0)
    Aa.renderformat = #rgba8888
    pIntro = 1
  end if
if pGameTime / 60 = 10 then
    g_world.camera[1].removeOverlay(2)
  end if
  if pGameTime / 60 = 12 then
    Bb = g_world.newtexture("Intr02", #fromcastmember, member("Intr02"))
    g_world.camera[1].addoverlay(Bb,point(160,340),0)
    Bb.renderformat = #rgba8888
  end if
So when I try to overlay Bb, I get:
Script error. Object with duplicate name already exists
Bb = g_world.newtexture("Intr02", #fromcastmember, member("Intr02"))
-2147196922
Why am I getting that error? I named the new texture something different.

Well according to your error message you never get so far as to create the overlay, the error occurs the line before you assign the texture, there clearly exists an instance of an texture with the same name at the time.
Also if you ran the program past the texture creation, saved your dir, then director won't remove it on resetworld, but since you checked inside the w3d member in your dir or cst we'll assume it's clean.
I sugest inserting a break point before or on the line causing the error and either through 3DPI, object inspector or through lingo code in the message window, checking to see if the texture exists.
Off the top of my head possible causes may be that:
you are calling this function more than once (pGameTime isn't updated before you reenter this function again?),
creating a texture with the same name somewhere else (do a search for "Intr02").
Other than that it's difficult to guess, the only way to be sure would be to step through the movie and see what happens, if you have a stripped down version of your game with the error I'd be willing to take a look.

  • Another dumb overlay question..

    hi, sorry to bother you all with a redundant overlay file question but ive scoured the forum and still cannot wrap my mind around this process and what i am doing wrong.
    heres what i have done, following step-by-step the lynda.com tutorial:
    1. import a 720x532 still of my menu BG.
    2. i create my overlays, in this case, 3 white stars, next to my 3 menu titles.
    3. i deactivate the visibility of the background, leaving a transparent screen with my 3 white stars.
    4. i save as a tiff, as a copy (no layers). i have tried saving while ticking the "Save transparency" as well as without it.
    5. i import the tiff file into DSP(v.4), set as Overlay File, then drag my button over the first menu title, but no star appears.
    WHAT AM I DOING WRONG I AM LOSING MY MIND AHH!!!
    please help, thanks in advance!
    -brooks

    Go back to your photoshop file, make the three white stars into three black ones instead, on a white background. Export this as a .pict file and use it as the menu overlay.
    In DVDSP, draw out the button rectangles. Set the colours for the buttons to be simple overlay type, and set the normal state to be black and zero opacity. Now set the selected state to be white and full opacity. You can choose another colour for the activated state - try red - and also set this to full opacity.
    What should happen is that the default button will start off with the star and moving from button to button will make the star appear on each as you go.

  • DVD menu, overlay question

    Hello fellow DVD menu builders, I need your help. I created a menu in Photo with different layers, I flattened the image to .pct: one is the background, the other is the overlay where the word itself should turn a white color when it is activated. It's not working. Here's what I did, I dragged the background .pct onto the blank menu in DVDSP, I set the dropbox as to Background, I dragged my overlay onto the DVDSP, using Overlay for a setting. Then I created a button where I want viewers to activate the button, but my overlay does not show up therefore viewers will not know when it is activated. So when I simulated the menu, the button never changed color, it goes immediately to the movie.
    More info: the Start button is in light blue, the activated overlay is in white.
    Thank you!
    KChen

    To clarify, your overlay generally needs to be black graphics on a white background.

  • LR 3 Crop Overlay Question

    Hello,
    I am in the middle of a lot of work and will not upgrade to LR 3 until later this summer, but I wanted to check if a feature I have requested was put into the program.
    I was hoping to be able to overlay an 8x10 ratio crop over the "original" 8x12 ratio.  So in other words, when the crop tool is activated and set to "original", there is the ability to turn on a view to show where an 8x10 ratio crop would fall.
    Thanks.

    If this is true I am totally disappointed.
    This is a "photography" related request and not a nifty feature add-on.  I deal with needing to leave room for an 8x10 from an 8x12 ratio in the same digital image file all of the time.  It is part of the modern digital workflow where on delivers a single digital file and the end user prints.
    I don't understand.  This seems like such an easy yet important addition to this program.  My two feature requests and posting on the Adobe labs have fallen on deaf ears.

  • Slideshow overlay question

    Hi
    I'm playing around with a few ideas for an app and for some reason all of my slideshow overlays appear on top / infront of all the other content on the page when I view the app on my iPad.
    In indesign I have sent the slide show to the back and can see any text or image boxes I've positioned over the top but on the iPad the slideshow keeps appearing on top of everything.
    Is this a common problem and is there any work arounds or something I'm missing that will resolve the issue?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    a workaround would be to convert the items you want to have above into multistateobjects themself.
    a one picture slideshow, or a notmoving scrollarea. this should normally work.

  • Slideshow Text Overlay Question

    I want tthe text overlay in the slide show module to include the file caption. My captions are long and need two or more rows of text. The problem I have is that Lightroom will only display the caption text on a single line that runs well outside of the slide area. Even if I make the text small by grabbing the center point of the text box and make the height small, the text stays on a single line and extends outside the slide area. I am not able to grab a corner and drag the text box to a more square proportion forcing the text to break into multiple lines. As far as I can tell this is not possible. Any suggestions?
    Thanks for your help

    In the Metadata panel in Library Module (Grid View or Loupe View), when you enter text in the Caption field, and you want a new line use Ctr. / Cmd + <Enter>.
    When you use the <Text template Editor> for entering {Custom} text, use Ctrl / Cmd + J.

  • Compositing/overlay question

    So I made a clip in Animation and exported; properties as follows.
    640x360 24fps Animation codec (background not rendered solid)
    I then wanted to make it a 'background' for a lecture clip in FCP 6.06.
    Sequence is 1280x720 30fps HDV 720p30.
    The lecture clip has been cropped and is moving from right to left across the canvas (using key framing of the 'center').
    I want to use the 'background' clip at full opacity but I don't want it to "mix" with the lecture clip; I want the lecture clip to be the foremost video and have none of the background clip in it. Basically a video block that is 20% of the screen size moving across the screen.
    I tried dragging the lecture clip in the canvas and chose 'superimpose' but that did not yield the result I'm aiming for.
    I was able to accomplish the opposite of this; the background clip ONLY appears on the lecture clip (i think I used multiply).
    I've been thumbing through the manual, my Apple Pro training series books, and this forum but have yet to find the answer.
    How can I get the background clip to play in the background and have another video clip move across it as an overlay??
    Any references to the manual would help...

    Sorry...
    I made a clip in Apple Motion and exported with the Animation codec.
    The lecture clip is a video clip of a person standing and talking...
    And it has been cropped so that it can be moved across the screen.
    (To make the video not as boring).
    In other words,
    I have two videos. Clip A plays in the background while Clip B (being cropped in it's dimensions) moves from right to left across the screen AND overlaid on clip A. I want clip B in the forefront of the video.

  • Simple Overlay Question

    I created a custom overlay in Photoshop CS2 as described in the manual for DVD Studio Pro 4. The button is overlayed on top of a motion menu. There is one button on the menu, so it is selected by default. I want the custom button to disappear when activated. The manual describes this on page 86, but neglects to tell the user how to accomplish this.
    I imagined it would have to simply be adjusting the opacity, regardless of the color, but it doesn't work. The button is white when normal and selected.
    Any suggestions?

    Under Color in the inspector there are choices for normal, selected and activated. You can set different opacity levels there, and that should do the trick.

  • DVDSP 4 Overlay Question? please help

    Hi,
    in creating a motion menu i want to do the following,
    I have created 4 moving video boxes in the four corners of the screen. in the center is a place for text. That has been created, encoded, and imported into dvd studio pro 4.
    Now, i want a highlight box around video 1, and at the same time, overlay text will come up in the center explainging it.
    when you move to video box 2, the highlight is around the box, with different text in the middle. (so as you move thought the buttons, the text is in the same place each time, but changes with every button move, aka a differnt overlay for each button movement)
    I can do this in adobe encore 1.5 and have a motion background, but I don't want to use it. I want to use my new DVDSP 4. (photoshop layer menu not an option. need moving background)
    Thanks

    To the best of my knowledge, this is not possible in DVDSP - outside of layered-menus, and I know you can't do that here - because button regions, in both DVDSP menus and Photoshop layers, cannot overlap (as they would your case).
    Or, at least, they shouldn't overlap, just in case someone is using a software based player (like in OS X) where mousing over the center (text) area could cause all sorts of confusion.
    [Can't speak on how Encore does it, but text that 'pops up' when the corresponding button is selected (or moused over) must be part of the button's (clickable) region in DVDSP. That is, the expanse of space where, when mousing over, you get 'the clickable hand']

  • Overlay question...will i be able to make this work?

    I have a custom button graphic that is a white/red star. I'd like it to appear in the selected state and be invisible in the 2 other states.
    I've followed the directions that I've found in other threads/forums and my star appears jagged and the red associated with the star is gone. My only options are to "pick" one of the colors in the button tab. Which will not match the specific red associated with this project.
    What am I doing wrong?
    I'd like to avoid a layered menu so I can use music.
    Thanks!
    G5 Dual 1.8 Ghz PowerPC   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   DVDSP 4, Photoshop CS

    I tried this, but the white part of the star keeps keying out to show the black behind it, which is part of my background. (or whatever color is behind it...gray, yellow, etc...)
    any ideas?
    (Thanks for the help by the way)

  • Flash Overlay Question???

    Hi there. I'm wondering if anyone knows how they do the animation like on the World of Warcraft website. http://us.battle.net/wow/en/game/mists-of-pandaria/
    I know it is flash because a simple right click brings up some flash options. Normally I would think that this was just a stand alone flash movie that is just made to look like it flows with the rest of the site but it seems to me like there is a background image and the actual animation is just the leaves and wind/clouds. In other words it is almost like the animation is transparent and animating over the website background.
    I could be wrong but it seemed like a cool idea especially to help with file size and loading times.
    What do you guys think?

    They are using the Flash player to play back a video file. I doubt that the actual animation was created in Flash.

  • Overlay Question in FCPX

    I'm trying to make an overlaid clip fade off instead of having a straight line border it and the clip underneath it.
    Here's a screenshot of what I have right now: http://i.imgur.com/DuGsM.jpg
    I just wanted the border of the clip on the left to fade off. Is there any way to do this in FCPX or Motion 5?

    clchilde,
    Yup, this should be an easy one for you. In Final Cut Pro X, select your overlaid clip and apply the effect "Mask"
    You'll find it under Effects > Keying. Use the controls in the inspector window to change the amount of feathering.
    Hope that is what you are looking for. (Note, it applies the feather to all sides)

  • Question about adjusting an image to compensate for an alpha black overlay

    I don't know how accurate that title/question is but please hear me out and I'l explain it as best I can.
    There is a touchscreen monitor in my car.
    It allows custom background wallpapers to be loaded via USB.
    The touchscreen automatically adds what would appear to be about a 25% alpha black layer in FRONT of the image so the touchscreen controls and icons are clearly visible.
    The problem is, I don't know what values I'm supposed to adjust on my image in order to get it to look the same way it does on my computer screen.
    Would you adjust the brightness?  Contrast?  Tint?  A combination of all of them?
    Or is this simply not possible because the ~25% alpha black tint is placed OVER the wallpaper?
    I'd really appreciate some advice.  I don't mind tinkering with the values and using trial and error but I don't want to waste my time if this simply isn't possible.

    Just so it's clear, you're not going to be able to "brighten it up" so it looks just like the original - at least not completely so.  An image can only be as bright as bright white.  If that has been reduced by an overlay, you're not going to be able to make the original image "brighter than white" so as to compensate.  Maybe someday, when HDR image formats are common...
    The car is darkening the image on purpose in order to make the locations of the controls more obvious.  I can't imagine why you'd want such a busy image as a background, since it makes the actual controls difficult to find.
    I read an article today that says that testing has shown that automotive touch screens distract drivers as much as a 0.08 blood alcohol level.  And you're wanting to make it more difficult to find those controls.
    Whatever you do, please be careful.

  • Question about image overlays

    I have what is hopefully a good question here.
    My final output will be 432x280.
    I created a graphic exactly with those dimensions, and overlaid it on the video I have ( which is original size of 1280x720)
    ( the graphic I overlaid is a very simple picture frame )
    When I overlay the graphic over the video, it is MUCH smaller than the video in Premiere. ( I understand this is normal because my original video is larger )
    Question: What should I do ? I want the simple border/picture frame to be the best quality possible in the output video. So what do you suggest ? ... Do you re-create the graphic so it matches the original video ? or do you size down the video so it fits into the frame ? - I tried this, but now I have a large black area on my work window in Premiere, because the frame is so small in relation to the video. I'm not sure how to proceed at this point.
    I would appreciate any of your responses / suggestions.
    Dave.

    David,
    Assuming you are working in a custom (desktop) 1280x720 project, I would suggest to use a graphic that has the same dimensions as the video and to do the shrinking to 432x280 at the end (in the Adobe Media Encoder export).

  • 2 questions : How do I know if a video in Flash is streaming? 2nd - how can I make an overlay for video?

    Two questions :
    1) I have created a QT.mov, imported it into Flash, but after
    thinking about it, I want to be sure it is streaming for the web.
    How can I be sure of that? If it is not, what code can I put to
    make sure it is loading?
    2) How can I make an overlay for the video that disappears as
    soon as the user clicks on the play button?

    1. Without a flash ciommunication server for TRUE streaming
    of the file, what you get is called Progressive streaming. This
    means once the video begins to download it can start playing before
    the file has completely downloaded to the user. There are good
    descriptions (including pros and cons) of this here:
    http://www.mediacollege.com/video/streaming/overview.html
    2. If you have the file set to start automatically there will
    be no need for the user to push the play button. You could just put
    a graphic on top of the video component, and use actionscript to
    make the graphic invisible when the play button is pushed.
