Overriding a cell's toString() within a JTable

Using JTable's native copy to clipboard functionality, I am copying the table's contents. However, since this is a non-standard JTable and contains Components of varying types, the cell's contents are returning the Object's toString when a copy is performed. Where can I override this so that the proper text within the Components will be returned?

As for how to do this, I suppose you could try andmake
a decorator that extended Component ...This seems like a crazy idea for something that
should have a simple solution.
That's my feel too.
I'm at the point where I've isolated that the
TransferHandler is calling the table's
getValueAt(int, int) method. Now if I could
determine if getValueAt() was being called by the
TransferHandler or by anything else, I could easily
do the workaround.That's the wrong way to do it though - a method shouldn't care who called it. Why don't you modify the TransferHandler to render the data the way you want it? I am not familiar with that class, but it seems like you should have a clean way to do this, as it's a pretty "routine" thing to do.

  • How to listen for cell selection changes within a JTable

    Problem: my table has 8 columns, with 4 of them containing very large text (up to 1000 chars). Solution is to set the initial size these columns so that the 1st 20 chars are visible, and if one of these columns gains focus/selection via mouse-clicking/tabbing/arrow keys, the entire text is shown in a JTextArea below the table.
    I added a ListSelectionListener to the table, but this only informs me when the row selection has changed.
    I added a FocusListener to the table, but this only informs me when the table gains/loses focus, not when it's been changed within.
    I added a TableColumnModelListener to the TableColumnModel, but this only informs me when the column selection has changed.
    I didn't bother with MouseListener as this won't handle change of selection via tabbing.
    The LSL got me half way there, and the TCML got me the other half. Any ideas on how to combine?
    Or is there something obvious that I'm missing?

    Walter Laan wrote:
    Use both and call the same method which updates the text area based on the current selected (or focused == lead selection index) cell.Yeah - that's what I figured. I just didn't know if there was a magic bullet (i.e., a single listener) out there that I was missing.
    While you are at it, also add a table model listener which calls the same method if the selected cell is updated.I'll keep that in mind, but it's not necessary in this particular case. The table cells in question will be uneditable. The text area will have supporting Edit/Save/Cancel buttons.

  • Rendering a JTable within a JTable Cell

    How can one render a JTable within another JTable cell?

    You could return JTable in your TableCellRenderer.

  • Cell Editor for a JTable within A JTable Cell

    My individual cells each contain a seperate JTable and I need to write a cell editor for it. I'm not really sure how to write one so if someone show me where I can find some useful examples of such a cell editor I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for your time. :-)

    So, you have a big table whose cells each contain a little table. I assume you already have the little tables working correctly with cell editors and so on, and you want to write a cell editor for the big table. Correct?
    My problem with this is that I can't imagine how this would actually work in practice. Suppose I click on a cell in the big table; then the cell renderer displays the appropriate little table. At this point should I see one of the cells in that little table selected, and should I be able to use the Tab key to move around the little table? And if so, then I can't use the Tab key to move around the big table. Next, suppose I press F2 indicating that I want to edit the little table. What should change? Should I now be able to tab around the little table, whereas I couldn't before? And if so, how do I indicate that I have stopped editing the little table? Pressing Enter indicates to the little table's cell editor that its editing is finished, but how should I tell the big table's cell editor that its editing is finished?
    Perhaps if you can answer this, you may have a better idea of how to solve your problem. Sorry I only have questions and not answers.

  • Highlighting different rows within a JTable

    I have a JTable that has 20 rows. I also have a Jlist next to the JTable. When someone selects something within the Jlist I want to highlight certain rows depending on what was selected within that list. For instance if a user selects Item1 within the list I want to highlight the 3rd, 8th and 11th row within a JTable. The problem is the JTable API will let you highlight a number of rows but not allow you to specify single rows to highlight at one time. When I run my code to do this I get the last row highlighted. The reason is because the 3rd and 8th row do get highlighted but when I call the setRowSelectionInterval(i, i); where i is the row to highlight it has already passed and will end up highlighting the 11th row only. Is there any work around for this?

    First, make sure you table supports multi-select. Turn it on in this case, otherwise you can't select multiple items.
    To color different rows, you'll have to set a cell renderer and use it to color those rows. It's possible to collor each and every cell a different color, set fonts, images, etc..you just need a good cell renderer.

  • How to set different renderers to different cells in same column of JTable?

    Hello Friends,
    I need your help again...
    Does any body knows, how to set different renderer's for different cells of same column in JTable..??
    For ex.
    Col1 Col2 Col3 Col4
    A       A       A      A
    A       A       A      B
    A       A       A      C
    A       A      A       D
    Where A B C D would be different Renderers.  I want set exactly same ,,, ie. one column with different renderer at different cell positions..
    Right now i m setting renderer using statement bellow :
    table.getColumnModel().getColumn(int).setCellRenderer(rederer_Instance);But with this, effect in the last renderer is applicable whole column....
    Can any body help me out ?????????

  • Can't get focused a JTextField within a JTable cell

    I have a table and I placed a cell editor with a JText field on it for all cell editing,
    I want to do things when the focus is lost or gained and my app works fine when a cell is double clicked or f2 is pressed, but when a cell is selected (without double clicking) and just begin typing it produces no focus gained event.
    I tried by calling grabFocus method of that jTextField within the overriden prepareEditor method of the JTable but it doesn't get focus (doesn't even gains and loses it :s )
    Does anyone have an idea of how to force this component to grab focus?
    Thanks

    Hai,
    dont add the FocusListener to the EditorComponent.
    Try to use the JTable Functions - like this:
    import javax.swing.event.ChangeEvent;
    import javax.swing.table.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.util.EventObject;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class Test extends JFrame
         JTable table;
         JTextArea text;
         JScrollPane scroll;
         JTextField cellTextField;
         Test()
              DefaultTableModel model = new DefaultTableModel();
              cellTextField = new JTextField();
              text = new JTextArea();
              text.setEditable(false);
              scroll = new JScrollPane();
              scroll.setViewportView(text);
              table = new JTable(model){
                   @Override
                   public Component prepareEditor(TableCellEditor editor, int row, int column) {
                        text.append("Better use this to Start Edit!\n");
                        return super.prepareEditor(editor, row, column);
                   @Override
                   public void editingStopped(ChangeEvent e) {
                        text.append("Better use this to Stop Edit!\n");
                        super.editingStopped(e);
              model.addColumn("Column 1");
              model.addColumn("Column 2");
              model.addRow(new String [] {"Cell 1", "Cell 2"});
              table.setCellSelectionEnabled( true );
              table.getColumnModel().getColumn(0).setCellEditor( new DefaultCellEditor(cellTextField));
              table.getColumnModel().getColumn(1).setCellEditor( new DefaultCellEditor(cellTextField));
              getContentPane().setLayout(new BorderLayout());
              getContentPane().add(table, BorderLayout.NORTH);
              getContentPane().add(scroll, BorderLayout.CENTER);

              setVisible(true);

  • Capturing JCheckBox edit from within a JTable cell

    Hey,
    I've gone through as many posts as i can from this forum and i have managed to understand quite a bit but there is just this one probelm that i have.
    What i have is a checkbox in a cell in a jtable that causes the a jpanel elsewhere to repaint in various ways depending on whether the checkbok is checked or not.
    The code below is for the table editor. The model is my table model. aCanvas is the panel being repainted. completeVisible is the array that aCanvas accesses to repaint the panel.
    The code below works perfectly after the but only after the second click. the first 2 times i click the checkbox the value printed is true and then afterwards it starts alternating and working correctly... can anyone please tell me why this is?
    thanks in andvance... :o)
    private class TSPCellEditor extends AbstractCellEditor implements TableCellEditor, ActionListener {
              Boolean visible;
              JCheckBox check;
              String TEST = "TEST";
              public TSPCellEditor() {
                   check = new JCheckBox();
                   check.setActionCommand(TEST);
                   check.addActionListener(this);
              public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e) {
                   if(TEST.equals(e.getActionCommand())) {
                        visible = new Boolean(check.isSelected());
                        fireEditingStopped();
              public Object getCellEditorValue() {
                   return visible;
              public Component getTableCellEditorComponent(JTable table, Object value, boolean isSelected, int row, int column) {
                   visible = (Boolean)(value);
                   //boolean temp = visible.booleanValue();
                   //temp = !temp;
                   //visible = Boolean.valueOf(temp);
                   check.setSelected(visible.booleanValue());
    System.out.println(completeVisible[row]+" "+row);
                   completeVisible[row] = visible.booleanValue();
                   model.setValueAt(visible, row, column);
                   aCanvas.repaint();
                   return check;
         }

    I can't answer your question, but I think a better way to implement your solution is to use a TableModelListener. An event is fired whenver the contents of the table model are changed so you can do your processing here. This [url http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=57&thread=418560]thread gives a simple example.

  • How do you set new items within a JComboBox that is within a JTable

    I have searched and searched for the answer to this and do not thing there is one. I have a JTable that has 5 columns. 2 of the columns use DefaultCellRenderers where a JComboBox is used. One of the columns has a value of different football positions. The other has a value of the different players. When a user enters a particular position such as Kickers I want all the Kickers to be showin within the Players JComboBox within the table.
    The problem is that I ONLY want the cell to be modified within that row and column that the position was changed. I have found ways to modify the component but it modifies it for the whole Column. I only want it to be modified for the player cell within the row that the Position was modified. Bottom line is that I just want to modify the JComboBox's components.

  • How to set a cell editable at runtime for jtable

    Hi evry body
    i need to set a cell as editable during runtime and set some value for the cell and make it non editable after setting value
    how can i do it? urgent help appreciated
    regards
    anil

    You could override the methods isCellEditable(...) and setValueAt(...) in your JTable's TableModel to get the effect desired
    // Assuming that each element of the array will be false initially
    boolean[][] valueSet = new boolean[noRows][noCols];
    public boolean isCellEditable(int row, int col) {
      return !valueSet[row][col];
    public void setValueAt(Object obj, int row, int col) {
      super.setValueAt(obj, row, col);
      valueSet[row][col] = true;
    }

  • Custom Cell Renderer issue in Custom JTable

    I have CustomeTable extends JTable which renders different UI Components like (JTextField/ ComboBox /JButton/JCheckBox) in *"single column*" so i have overridden *getCellRenderer* and *getCellEditor methods.*

    *For each UI Renderer i have called its repaint() method still this issue is noticed not frequentlly but yes occasionally.*

    Then i Click NODe B - Which displayes Contextual UI Components
    Row 2 Column 2 should display TextBox (as expected)
    but due to some rendering issue its Displaying same Validate Button
    I have debugged and verified my logic to call renderer is perfect.
    My rest of rows /columns displays appropriate UI Components except the

    I think after my Button Editor is Invoked & i perform some business logic Button renderer is not getting invoked ???

  • Return to the cell after data validation in JTable

    Hi,
    I am implementing an editable JTable. I want the focus or selection return to the current editing cell when the user inputing a wrong format data. I can catch the validation error and pop up a error message to user. But I can not return the focus or selection to the editing cell.
    If anyone has already solved this problem, please give me your solution.
    Thank you!
    I have tried:
    1.
    In tableChanged(TableModelEvent e) method:
    int row = e.getFirstRow();
    int column = e.getColumn();
    Object data = newJTable.getValueAt(row, column);
    if(!validation(data)) // return true if validation OK
    editFailed = true;//class variable
    previousRow = row;//class variable
    previousCol = column;//class variable
    Add a focus listener to the table and implement the focus listener's focusLost method with:
    if(validationFailed)
    table.editCellAt(previousRow, previousCol);
    This does move the focus to the editing cells if you want to continue to edit the table.
    Problems are
    If you move the focus out of the table, the wrong date will be in the table or not edited.
    The selection color was shown on the next cell where you pointed your mouse to after you leave the editing cells.
    2. I have also tried to use:
    in the above focusLost method
    table.clearSelection();
    table.editCellAt(previousRow, previousCol);
    table.setRowSelectionInterval(previousRow, previousRow);
    table.setColumnSelectionInterval(previousCol, previousRow);
    But it did not change the selection.
    Shaolong

    This is the fix for the above problem.
    Basically we need to handle both mouse/keyboard actions on our own.
    This code returns the control to errorCell..
    /* TableCellValidator class */
    /* The class basically validates the input entry in a cell and */
    /* pops up a JOptionPane if its an invalid input */
    /* And an OK is clicked on the JOptionPane, the control returns back */
    /* to the same cell */
    /* Basic Idea: The controls Arrow/Tab/mouse clicks are handled by our */
    /* ----------- custom table. Its has been slightly tricky to handle */
    /* mouse clicks, since when you click the next cell, the */
    /* editingrow/editingcol advances. Hence the */
    /* previousrow/previouscol has been captured in the */
    /* setValueAt method. */
    /* To capture Table/Arrow/Numeric Arrow, The keyStrokes(TAB etc)*/
    /* assigned different AbstractionActions to execute like */
    /* validateBeforeTabbingToNextCell */
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    import javax.swing.table.*;
    public class TableCellValidator {
    * Constructor.
    * Basically instantiates the class and sets up the

    JFrame f = new JFrame("JTable test");
    f.getContentPane().add(new JScrollPane(createTable()), "Center");
    f.pack();
    f.setVisible(true);
    f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
    * A method which created our custom table.
    * The JTable methods processMouseEvent
    * and setValueAt are overridden to handle
    * Mouseclicks.
    * The Tables ActionMap is fed with different
    * AbstractAction classes eg: (validateBeforeTabbingToNextCell)
    * (Scroll down below for the innerclass
    * validateBeforeTabbingToNextCell).
    * So basically when TAB is pressed the stuff present
    * in the validateBeforeTabbingToNextCell's actionPerformed(..)
    * method is performed.
    * So we need to handle all the stuff a TAB does.
    * ie. if a TAB hits the end of the row, we need to increment
    * it to the next Row (if the validation is successful)
    * in the current row etc..

  • Programmatically selecting a cell in a two-dimensional JTable

    The problem is that when a person edits a cell and the value fails validation, I would like to programmatically select the cell. The validation is done in the setValueAt method of a Class extending the AbstractTableModel. By simply returning out of that method, the cell value is set back to the way it was before the user changed it. In addition, I would like the problem cell to be automatically selected rather than requiring the user to click in it to select it. The first question is 1- Is this possible, and 2- Any clues as to how to select it?
    We find for examle in Chapter 6 of the CoreJava 2 Vol II Advanced features statements like this on page 399 of, I think, Edition 4, (can anyone tell what edition it is?) by Cay Horstmann
    void setCellSelectionEnabled(boolean b)
    If b is true, then individual cells are selected (when the user clicks in the cell?). I have researched this problem for several days and don't have a clue how to automatically select the cell although I know precisely what row and column it is.

    This is the code to return the focus to error cell.

  • Two common commands missing: go to last filled cell and find within column

    Hello,
    There seem to be two very common commands (and, by extension, shortcuts) that are missing from Numbers. First, in Excel, you can use command+arrow to go to the last filled cell (even if it is a formula without a result). More importantly, combining this command with the shift key allows you to select an entire column, etc. instantly. The command is also smart enough to exclude headers and formulas in the last row only, initially. You can easily add them by using only shift+arrow after the selection has been made.
    Next, you apparently cannot search within a particular selection only, such as an entire column or row (or just a custom selected area). This is obviously very useful.
    Any suggestions on how to accomplish these tasks is welcome but a search on these forums and a detailed look at the user manual came up with nothing.
    Thanks,
    Jonna

    jimdoc wrote:
    Different program, different paradigm.
    In the tables in Numbers, there is generally no need to have unused columns at the right or unused rows at the bottom. While I agree it would be nice to have a simple key-command that does these things, there is less of a need for them in a program where the last cell filled is usually the last cell there is.
    And selecting an entire row, or column, can be accomplished simply by clicking on the "A" (or "B" or "C"...) or "1" (or "2" or "3"...). This does select the headers and footers as well, however.
    With respect, the advent of apple spreadsheet software (however much I respect the company) does not represent a new paradigm–it is just "new" and therefore may be missing some crucial features. You do not provide any helpful suggestions, unfortunately, and the problem remains. What if I do not want to select an entire cell but only from a point in the middle of the column to the end? There is no command nor key command for this.
    You also say nothing about the search issue, which is clearly a problem.
    Anyway, thanks jaxjason, I will send in some feedback.
