OVM and OCFS2 1.6

Ok this question may be a little complicated so I'll start by explaining what I'm trying to achive.
I have 3 OVM 2.2.1 servers in 1 Server pool running OCFS2 on an EMC SAN.
I also ave an Oracle Enterprise Linux server which connects to the same ocfs2 cluster for performing backups of the VMs.
Currently I have to pause all VMS and backup the shared storage in order to backup all of my VMs.
I would like to use reflink so I can do this without pausing them.
Can I achieve this by
1 upgrading all OVM servers and my OEL Server to OCFS2 1.6 or is the Kernel upgrade not supported in OVM 2.2.1
or
2 Upgrading my OEL server to OCFS2 1.6 and doing the reflinks there, but leave the OVM machines on 1.4 as the doco states the 1.4 and 1.6 are compatible with one another.
Thanks in advance

Hi,
unfortunately OCFS2 1.6 is not yet supported on OVM 2.2.1.
I am waiting all day that Oracle will finally release OVM 3.0, which will incorporate the new OCFS2 1.6 with all it functions.
This would also resolv your problem then...
Regarding your second option, I don't know if this will work. But it seems the only solution you have right now...

  • Poor disk io thourghtput on OVM and guest VM

We are using DELL R720 with H710 raid controller.
A wired problem about the disk io was discovered during tests.
We found that the disk throught on VM server(OVS repo) and VM guest are only about 1/3 of the physical server, around only 50M/s.
We are tring to compare disk io write with simple dd instruction on following enviroments with same hardware
    The test cases are:
(H710, 2T 7200rpm * 8 configured with RAID10 as two virtual disks, first for ovm, second for OVS repo)
    1. Centos 6 installed directly
    2. OVM 3.2.1, sda
    3. OVM 3.2.1, /dev/mapper/36848f690ec834b0018df77d30704a452 (used by OVS repo)
    4. Guest vm Oracal Linux 6.0 on OVM 3.2.1,pvm (using local physical disk as OVS repository)
    The result is:
    1.Centos 6 installed directly
    dd if=/dev/zero of=~/a.out bs=16k count=20000 oflag=direct
    20000+0 records in
    20000+0 records out
    327680000 bytes (328 MB) copied, 1.85022 s, 177 MB/s
    2. OVM 3.2.1, sda
    dd if=/dev/zero of=~/a.out bs=16k count=20000 oflag=direct
    20000+0 records in
    20000+0 records out
    327680000 bytes (328 MB) copied, 2.5659 seconds, 128 MB/s
    3.OVM 3.2.1, /dev/mapper/36848f690ec834b0018df77d30704a452
    dd if=/dev/zero of=/OVS/Repositories/0004fb00000300000102bf00d2adeb8a/a.out bs=16k count=10000 oflag=direct
    10000+0 records in
    10000+0 records out
    163840000 bytes (164 MB) copied, 3.00933 seconds, 54.4 MB/s
    4. Guest vm Oracal Linux 6.0 on OVM 3.2.1,pvm
    dd if=/dev/zero of=~/a.out bs=16k count=20000 oflag=direct
    20000+0 records in
    20000+0 records out
    327680000 bytes (328 MB) copied, 7.60928 s, 43.1 MB/s
We can see that on pure Centos 6 we got the reasonable disk io, on OVM sda the score is slower but still acceptable.
But on OVM disk and guest VM, we saw a big drop.
An interesting thing is : I have 3 guest vms on this vm server, when I run a same dd command samultaniously on 3 guest vms, I can still
get the same score. Adding them together we get a 120+ MB/s throughput.
I guess the reason might be that OVS put a io threshold on both OVS and each vms on it to make sure no single vm can drain up all disk io
in order to preserve some to other vms ?
I plan to use mongo db on the guest vm if the io is close to the real machine, could anyone please help me improve the disk io ?
    thanks a lot!

    Thanks for your advice,
I followed played below tests against physical server(Centos6) and Oracal vm guest server(OL6,pvm).
    fio -filename=/srv/test.out -direct=1 -rw=randwrite -bs=4k -size=2g -numjobs=8 -runtime=60 -group_reporting -name=test

    fio -filename=/srv/test.out -direct=1 -rw=read -bs=4k -size=2g -numjobs=8 -runtime=60 -group_reporting -name=test
    fio version is 2.0.13
The results shows random read on VM guest matches about 60% of physical server, and random write about 90%.
But sequential read only counts about 42% and write 35%.
I am not sure if the big drop on sequential read/write performance is reasonable. Maybe I did something wrong ?

Better yet what does the community think about putting any of the OVM compondents in the DMZ?Several of my clients run Oracle VM Servers in their DMZ. In that scenario, I recommand that Dom0 not be connected to the DMZ, i.e. it has no IP address on that network. Rather, the Dom0 and Oracle VM Manager are on a dedicated management network that has no access inbound from the Internet. The DomU's should be connected to DMZ-facing bridges. I would not run Oracle VM Manager in the DMZ. All communication from the Manager to the OVS servers is initiated by the Manager itself, so that can be inside your network.

  • Testing iscsi and ocfs2: lost packets and freeze tests

I have iscsi , ocfs2, asmlib installed on Centos4 (based upon j.hunter's article on building an iscsi/rac system). I am trying to confirm that these layers are functioning correctly and will not pose problems when clusterware/asm/rac is installed.
What do you think of these test results?
    1. simultaneoulsly copying files from each node to the iscsi shared storage causes lots of lost packets and one of the 2 nodes will spend most of its time blocked by the other.
    2. Unplugging an ethernet cable causes the server to freeze after a few minutes. Plugging the cable back in does nothing to eleviate the hang problem.

For performance, you need to tune your core network buffers and tcp network buffers (namely the [rw]mem_(default|max) and tcp_[rw]mem values. And you need to have a Gigabit network for such performance.
For the hang situation, it looks like as if you are unplugging a SCSI device where it is not hot swappable. You can diagnose the problem using a serial console / netdump server / or Sysrq-w / Sysrq-T dumps.

  • 10gR2 RAC SE and OCFS2

    Hi All,
I have been trying to look at certification for a 10gR2 SE RAC build on RHEL4. In particular OCFS2 and voting, OCR Quorum disk.
I was told some time ago that having OCR, voting etc is not supported when they are in OCFS2 with an SE database. I have had a look on metalink and various certification documents appear to contradict each other. Does anyone have a definitive answer to this conundrum.
    regards
    Alan

Which certification documents are you referring too? If they are wrong Oracle needs to fix them.
And as far as I know, you can store the OCR and voting disks on an OCFS2 file system (and in 11GR2 you can even store them in ASM I think). The datafiles must be managed by ASM otherwise will you violate the SE license and you must also use Oracle CRS as the clusterware.

  • OVM and database licensing

    Hello all,
I've got a 4 Oracle VM server pool containing Oracle database VMs and application servers VM. I've placed all my database VM on one server of the pool and I deactivated HA, DRS, etc. In that case, is it ok to license only this physical server with oracle database licenses ?
    Thank you for your answer.

Yes. You must pin the # of CPU you have license for. If you're just going to license the entire server CPU count, then I'd say you'll be okay without pinning.

  • Oracle 10gR2  RAC / Dataguard on Linux Redhat 4.2  X86_64 and ASM / OCFS2

    Hi All,
Well don't know if this is bleeding edge or not, but wanted to know if anybody has a system running the following setup and if there are any issues like some components are not certified on 64 bit (e.g is OCFS2)
We are in process of building a system with
    Oracle RAC on 10gR2 on a 64 bit Linux OS 4.2 (2.6.9-22.ELsmp)
The system has a EMC CX500 and we are going to use ASM for the datafiles and OCFS2 for the Voting Disk and OCR.
We are also going to have a single (no RAC) Physical Dataguard instance at another site also using ASM.
We have seen that the OEM Grid Controller and agents are not supplied on x86_64
so we can't use it in a 64bit environment. (are we correct)
Anybody with suggested alternatives with the kit we have or a strong suggestion that 32 bit for RAC and Dataguard are best
    Thanks in advance
    John

I have a similar configuration, 3 nodes of SunFire X4100 (dual opteron), on RedHat 4 ES Update 2 using Dell/EMC CX300.
I am using OCFS2 for data and voting disks.
We had a couple of freeze-up (total node lockup) and I could not figure out what was wrong (this happens randomly).
Anybody have any idea where should I look for possible reasons?

I have OVS 3.x.x and OVM 3.x.x running on the same physical server.  I had some issues trying to configure storage via OVM and  I issued a shutdown (I think) from the OVM Web Interface.  Now I am unable to keep the server up and running.  Everytime I turn on the server, after Oracle VM Manager starts, it shuts down the server automatically within a minute or two after startup.
I am able  to login to the server via Putty and stop ovmm service manually.  When Oracle VM Manager service is stopped, (SERVICE OVMM STOP) the server does not shutdown automatically.  However as soon as I restart the OVMM service, it shuts down the server with message...
Shutdown requested by OVM. The system is going down for system halt NOW!
How do I find out what is causing OVM to issue the shutdown command and edit and fix via command line?

Since your server was continually rebooting, do you remember if you issued a shutdown or reboot from OVM web interface?  Mine was just shutting down.  Have you tried to use the Oracle Virtual Manage Web Interface to either reboot or shutdown the server after your upgrade to 3.2.4?  FYI I do not have support.  This is my sandbox.

  • OVM 3.0.1 local repository problem

Good morning all, i am really new in OVM and i am facing a big issue that stops me evaluating this product.
I have a couple of servers, connected to a S.A.N. array. I can see from both the servers i added to a clustered pool, and i am able to create a shared repository without problems.
I am not able to see local disks in the OVM manager administration and therefore i can't create local repositories. I tried all i found in this forum, but without success.
Let's focus on server1: it has a couple of 146GB disks. I used one of them for OVS installation leaving the second disk alone, without partitioning it.
Tried to create local repository in the clustered pool, but no way...
So i created a single full-disk partition and retried to create repo: still no way
Then i created an ocfs2 filesystem in the new partition but, again, i couldnt see physical local server1 disk.
Every time i changed partitions configuration, i obviously did rescanning of physical disks.
I all my tests, local physical disks selection list in Generic Local Storage Array @ node1 is always empty.
Any hint about solving this issue? Any good pointer to an hands-on guide (official docs are not so good)? Any suggestion about what to look at in log files for debugging?
    Any answer is welcome...
    Thank you all!

I was able to do this as follows
    1. have an untouched unformatted disk (no partitions, no file system)
    2. in hardware under the vmserver name , scan for the disk and it should show in the list
    3. in the repository section of home, add the repository as physical disk
    4. "present" (green up and down arrows) the physical disk on the vmserver itself (dont ask me why you have to do this but if you dont it wont find its own disk)

  • OVM 3.0.3 - register iSCSI server

Probably a basic thing that I'm overlooking, for which I apologize in advance. Stumped and turning to wider community while I recheck docs. Any ideas appreciated.
    A) Problem: Receiving a OVMAPI_B000E when attempting to Refresh Storage Array. The specific message is
OVMAPI_B000E Storage plugin command [storage_plugin_discover] failed for storage server [0004fb0000090000d7551a2353d303ce] failed with [com.oracle.ovm.mgr.api.exception.FailedOperationException: OVMAPI_4010E Attempt to send command: storage_plugin_discover to server: caballo5 failed. OVMAPI_4004E Server Failed Command: storage_plugin_discover oracle.generic.SCSIPlugin.GenericPlugin, Status: socket.gaierror:(-2, 'Name or service not known')
    B) Environment:
    OVS 3.0.3 fresh install
    - hostname caballo5
    - host is a Dell Precision P490 dual CPU, quad core w 20GB RAM
    - 3 NICs, one on primary subnet (192.168.0), two unassigned
    OVM 3.0.3 fresh instal
    - hostname gandalfl
    - host is a Dell Optiplex 755 w 8GB RAM, 500 GB OS disk,
    - Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 update 6
    - also houses Cloud Control 12.1.0
    - Production install
    OpenFiler 2.99 fresh install
    - hostname blackmax
    - host is a custom with 4x 1.5TB SATA for storage + 1x 300GB SATA for OS
    - iSCSI confiigured with no CHAP for discovery.
I can discover the openfiler iSCSI services from Windows iSCSI initiator as well as from OVM & OVS hosts using iscsiadm.  (Added below)
I use FQDN everywhere, but have removed domain in the info.

  • Can't remove OVM server from server pool

    Hi!
I tried to remove Oracle VM server using OVM. Both have version 3.0.3
I use Add/remove wizard from server pool. Selected my single server from list and pressed OK. Nothing happend. Server still in pool.
I tried to do so when server was online, offline. Results are the same. I reinstalled OVS, but now i'm can't discover it again even i configured different name and IP address. MAC is the same and it's the reason.
So, is it any way to force delete OVS using any tool or i have to reinstall OVM and it's repository?

    I did it but i don't know how :)
I tried to discover re-installed server with new IP and name. This operation was failed.
I changed IP address on re-installed server to old one. And re-discovered server with old name. After that it appeared in unassigned machines list. So, i was able to delete it and also delete old server pool
