OWB 10 Release2 External Tables

Hi
Tried with external tables, if i try to execute a select statement it retrieves 0 rows from external table. But if I do a select count(*) it showing 64939 as count.
Created the mapping and tried to validate..it validated with warnings abt the datatypes. Deployed and executed..success(?!) But there is no data loaded. What will be th reason. This file has around 40 cols and 26MB in size.
Also please let me know the data type change - for example I have CHAR data from flat file..in external everything is VARCHAR2. What we need to do?
Change the VARCHAR2 as the source data type(CHAR) or target data type ( char, number, date)?

Hi,
I just created the external table from flat file. After deployment, if you Query (Select statement) the external table it should retrieve the data right?. But it is retrieving 0 rows but you query for count(*), it showing the count how is that?
I have created external tables with some other flat files which has less number of rows say below 5000 its working fine. i am able select and view the data from external table.
May be I need to verify the size of each field in flat file.

Do we need to configure something before loading data from a flat file from OWB Client?
    Any help would higly appreciable.
    Regards,
    Manmohan Sharma

    Hi Detlef / Gowtham,
Now I am able to fetch data from flat files from OWB Server as well as OWB Client.
One way I have achieved as suggested by you
    1) Creating location on the OWB Client
    2) Samples the files at client
    3) Created & Configured external table
    4) Copy all flat files on OWB Server
    5) Updated the location which I created at the client.
    Other way
    1) Creating location on the OWB Client
    2) Samples the files at client
    3) Created & Configured external table
    4) Copied flat files on the sever in same drive & directory . like if my all flat files are on C:\data at OWB Client then I copied flat file C:\data on the OWB Server. But this is feasible for Non-Windows.
    Hence my problem solved.
    Thanks a lot.
    Regards,
    Manmohan

  • Modifying field lenght for an  external table via OWB

    Hi folks,
After, I would like to thanks everyone that helps to improve the level of quality of this forum with questions and answers!
I am having a problem with flat files and external tables:
I can't specify the field length in the ORACLE_LOADER parameters via OWB, so the driver consider that all my fields are CHAR(255). Concerning the online documentation for Oracle Utilities Part. no. A96652-01 on page 12-21, it's write that the lack of specification about the datatype or length of a field, the driver will assume the fields name and order of the fields defined on the external table fields and they will be CHAR(255). My problem is that we need to use a field bigger than CHAR(255), so I made this external table for example about our problem:
    CREATE TABLE "TESTE"
    "NOME" VARCHAR2(300),
    "SOBRENOME" VARCHAR2(300))
    ORGANIZATION EXTERNAL (
    TYPE ORACLE_LOADER
    DEFAULT DIRECTORY TARGET_LOC_SRC_FILES_LOC
    ACCESS PARAMETERS (
    RECORDS DELIMITED BY NEWLINE
    CHARACTERSET WE8MSWIN1252
    STRING SIZES ARE IN BYTES
    NOBADFILE
    NODISCARDFILE
    NOLOGFILE
    FIELDS
    TERMINATED BY ';'
    NOTRIM
    "NOME" ,
    "SOBRENOME"
    ) LOCATION (
    TARGET_LOC_SRC_FILES_LOC:'Partners.txt'
    REJECT LIMIT UNLIMITED
    NOPARALLEL
When we put by hand the field length in this script, it works fine!
Is there a way to put the length of the fields in the FIELDS clause of the SQL*Loader control file using OWB?

    Carlos,
    Have you tried the following:
    - Update the data types in the sampled flat file (i.e. go into the field definitions and edit the length).
    - Go into the mapping and inbound reconcile the table (right-mouse click the file operator and select inbound reconcile).
    - Regenerate, and review the result.
    Thanks,
    Mark.

  • Can we bind a single external table with multiple files in OWB 11g?

    Hi,
I wanted to ask if it is possible to bind an external table with multiple source files at same or different locations? Or an external table has to be bound to a single source file and a single location.
    Thanks in advance,
    Ann.
Edited by: Ann on Oct 8, 2010 9:38 AM

    Hi Ann,
Can you please help me out by telling me the steps to accomplish this. Right click on the external table in project tree, from the menu choose Configure,
then in opened Configuration Properties dialog window right clock on Data Files node and choose from menu Create -
you will get new record for file - specify Data File Name property

  • OWB Mapping involving Oracle External Table to  Oracle Target Table.

    Hi All,
I created a mapping which involves External Table as source & oracle table as target.
    Following were steps followed.
1> Created Directory & External Table on oracle server
2> Attached Text file with ',' delimiter to the External Table.
3> Imported the External Table in source module.
4> Created mapping which involves External Table as Source & Oracle Table as Target.
5> Validated & Generated Mapping in OWB.
6> Deployed the mapping in Deployment Manager.
7> Executed the mapping in Deployment Manager.
    Execution Results: Completed with errors.
No error message is displayed, I am wondering where can I get more information about the error message?
    Thanks in Advance.

  • Stuck on using an External Table in OWB 11.

I am using Oracle 11, and OWB 11.
I am trying to get some information from a CSV file, into an Oracle table. Here is what I have currently done:
    1. I have setup a location called CSV_FILE and this is pointing to my local drive in a folder called c:\CSV
    2. I have added the file to the Files tab, imported the metadata and the file is called Export_WithHeaders_CSV.csv
    3. I have setup a new external table called CSV and pointed it to the above File and set the default llocation to CSV_FILE
    4. I then right clicked on the external table and created the Data File pointing it to the CSV_FILE, and filling in the Data File Name with: Export_WithHeaders_CSV.csv
I am trying to do 2 things, the first is to just view the data in the external table through Design Center, and the 2nd is too add it to an OWB map to import into an Oracle Database. When I try to view the data (Right click on CSV, and select Data) I get the following error:
    ORA-29913: error in exectuing
    ODCIEXTTABLEOPEN callout
    ORA-29400: data cartridge error
    KUP-04040: file
    Export_WithHeaders.csv in
    CSV_FILE not found
I am able to generate and validate the external table without an erro, but I am not able to see any data, and I know the file contains close to 120 records?
When I bring the external table into a simple OWB map, just mapping it directly to a table, the map validates fine, but when I run the map, the test data shows a row_count of 0? I have been beating my head against the wall for a good 2.5 days now, and any help would be greatly appreciated....

    Hi,
This problem may be due to several reasons. I am aware of few reasons.
1)Have you deployed the external table first?
    2) If you do not have your data base client and server running in the same machine, you should place the csv file in the database server machine's 'c:\CSV' folder in order to create the external table through database. Then do a select count(*) statement.
3)Another reason may be as gerardnico said the file name you refered may be wrong.
I don't know your requirement. If you could create the external table succefully and if you get value for the select count(*) from <external_table_name>, then try to import the external table into the Design Center and map it with the Table you need.
If you are doing it purely with OWB then,
Do you have the file Export_WithHeaders.csv in the Server machine's 'c:\CSV_FILE' folder?
Because while importing the metadata of the CSV file the OWB will point to your local machine's 'c:\CSV_FILE' that is why your Validation and Deployment is success without errors.
But while executing the map it will take the data from Server machine. It will search for the Location 'c:\CSV_FILE' in the server machine and will look for the file Export_WithHeaders.csv there. So create athe same folder setup which you have in your client machine and run this again.
Try this if you do not get any better answers in this thread

  • Error when loading from External Tables in OWB 11g

    Hi,
I face a strange problem while loading data from flat file into the External Tables.
ORA-12899: value too large for column EXPIRED (actual: 4, maximum: 1)
error processing column EXPIRED in row 9680 for datafile <data file location>/filename.dat
In a total of 9771 records nearly 70 records are rejected due to the above mentioned error. The column (EXPIRED) where the error being reported doesn't have value greater than 1 at all. I suspect it to be a different problem.
Example: One such record that got rejected is as follows:
    C|234|Littérature commentée|*N*|2354|123
highlightened in Bold is the EXPIRED Column.
When I tried to insert this record into the External Table using UTL_FILE Utility it got loaded successfully. But when I try with the file already existing in the file directory it again fails with the above error, and I would like to mention that all the records which have been loaded are not Ok, please have a look at the DESCRIPTION Column which is highlightened. The original information in the data file looks like:
    C|325|*Revue Générale*|N|2445|132
In the External Table the Description Value is replaced by the inverted '?' as follows:
    Reue G¿rale
    Please help.
    Thanks,
    JL.

  • External table refere to a file in subfolder location

    Hi,
I'm trying to link a external table to a file in a subfolder in a file location in OWB. Is this possible or do i need to make a new connectior for every folder i want to use for an external file?
The server is an AIX server. So for example:
    - Location1 is refering to /POS
But i want to use a file located in /POS/BLA

    Edited by: Ossy81 on Nov 5, 2009 3:39 PM

Yes. Here the input from user guide:
    Describing the Flat File Module
Type a name and an optional description for the flat file module.
Recall that you create a module for each folder in your file system from which you want to sample existing files or to which you want to create new files. Therefore,
consider naming the module based on the folder name. Each file module corresponds to one folder in the file system.
For example, to import flat files from c:\folder1 and a subfolder such as c:\folder1\subfolder,create two file modules such as C_FOLDER1 and C_FODLER1_SUBFOLDER.

  • How  change NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS parameter for load external table

    Hi,
    I use this version:
    OWB 11gR2
    Database 11gR2
    Parameter NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS Database ., Instance ,.
When I created database with wizard and in this moment I don't set spanish language, later I changed this parameters in instance parameters.
Now I want load data from a file to external table, but I've an error when I try load data with decimal point.
why does it use the database parameter instead of instance parameter?
Is possible to change this parameter?
    Cheers
    Marisol

At this moment , this is not possible . You can see metalink note ID 268906.1.
    It says:
Currently, external tables always use the setting of NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS
    +at the database level.+

I am using the "import..."- function of "external tables" in warehouse target module. The external table is working correctly when accessing it via sqlplus.
We are using owb version 10.2.0.1.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Best regards
    Alexander

My friends, this a documented BUG into Metalink, but there is no solution.
    I used a simple workaround:
    1. I created the external table into the database;
    2. I created the external table into the OWB repository;
    3. I DIDN'T DEPLOY THE EXTERNAL TABLE TO THE DATABASE;
    4. I used the external table into my mappings with no problems;
    5. Finishing, I deployed my mappings to the database without any errors.
    Hope to help!,
    Gustavo.

  • Error in Deploying External Table

    Hi,
I am using OWB 10.2g version to create a database. While deploying the external table, I got the following message:
"TSS_15MIN_EX     ErrMsgKey     VLD-0180: A default location is required for external tables."
Could you help me in solving this issue?
    Thanks,
    Vipul

    Hi Sutirtha,
I tried to double click on the external table (in the Control Center) but nothing happens. I could only right click and select the only highlighted "Configure" option. In the configure option, only the following file locations turn up that all uses default file location:
    Bad File Location
    Discard file location
    Log file location
To give you a head start, It is the first time that we are deploying these tables as we are in a process of migrating the server to a different machine. In our current server, all these external tables are probably in C:\ or directed in C:\ but we have changed the path to D:\ in the new server. Do you think it has to do something while we import the metadata?
    Thanks,
    Vipul

    Hello Manjula,
Is it possible for you to spare sometime to list down the steps to be followed for creating External Table using flat file *.txt?
I am trying to do it but not getting through it.
