Packet filtering and traffic shaping during peak h...

I play the online game World of Tanks and an currently exteriancing severe lagg and disconnects, the problem does not appear to be with the game/service provider but with BT, i need to know does BT  use "packet filtering" and "traffic shaping" during peak hours and if so why has it suddenly started.
This game use's P2P to keep the latency down for players so have been advised to contact BT and ask them are they limiting these types of connections.
Most games do not use these types of connections, but World of Tanks one does and again,been told BT just don't like them, due to the amount of connections they attempt to forge in order to have a stable latency.
I need to know if this is going to continue as pay to play the game, therefore would have to consider changing my ISP to virgin who dont  use "packet filtering" and "traffic shaping" during peak hours .
Quick advice would be appreciated.

It's absolutely horrible. i turned off wifi all other devices and every other open program just to reduce my latency for 120ms to 80ms.
Still suffer from huge packet loss.
It would be absolutely horrible if they have started throttling worldoftanks.eu servers. Phone support is no help all they torld me to do is restart my router
I hope this is fixed soon. There are many posts on the WoT eu official forums and everyone that is effected appears to be a BT customer.
Some have mentioned it could be the damaged undersea cable.
I don't have any problems with torrents being throttled or anything like that. only worldoftanks.eu being throttled.

    I have tested this issue on another 5548UP with L3 running the same NX-OS version and get the same problem. Show CDP from the switch is not discovering devices, but the neightbors can see the 5K in question. Reboot sometimes will fix it, but not always. I suspect a problem with the software since that doesn't happen in NX-OS 5.2. The one I am using is

    Standard traffic shaping (the shape average command) will keep the average rate of the traffic to the limit you specify, which should be the committed rate of your circuit.
    Peak shaping will also do traffic shaping (using queues, etc), guaranteeing a minimum rate, but will allow traffic to levels to burst above your configured (committed) rate.
    From the documentation:
    Traffic shaping limits the rate of transmission of data. In addition to using a specifically configured transmission rate, you can use Generic Traffic Shaping (GTS) to specify a derived transmission rate based on the level of congestion.
    You can specify two types of traffic shaping; average rate shaping and peak rate shaping. Average rate shaping limits the transmission rate to the CIR. Using the CIR ensures that the average amount of traffic being sent conforms to the rate expected by the network.
    Peak rate shaping configures the router to send more traffic than the CIR. To determine the peak rate, the router uses the following formula:
    peak rate = CIR(1 + Be / Bc)
    where:
    •Be is the Excess Burst size.
    •Bc is the Committed Burst size.
    Peak rate shaping allows the router to burst higher than average rate shaping. However, using peak rate shaping, the traffic sent above the CIR (the delta) could be dropped if the network becomes congested.
    If your network has additional bandwidth available (over the provisioned CIR) and the application or class can tolerate occasional packet loss, that extra bandwidth can be exploited through the use of peak rate shaping. However, there may be occasional packet drops when network congestion occurs. If the traffic being sent to the network must strictly conform to the configured network provisioned CIR, then you should use average traffic shaping.
    Examples
    The following example sets the uses average rate shaping to ensure a bandwidth of 256 kbps:

  • Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 hangs while exporting and during peak file generation.

    I have Adobe Premiere Elements 7.0 (PRE7). I have a project which is using a single clip from a Mini-DV that was captured with Nero 8. Nero 8 was used because it was captured prior to installing PRE7. The file is 12GB and is on a USB disk drive because I don't have the space on my main hard drive (I have about 11GB free). My project doesn't do too much that's fancy. It merely uses about 20 minutes of the 60 minute Mini-DV captured AVI, and it uses simple transitions between each scene. I also have very simple titles at start and end. No themes or anything else.
    I've seen two problems. 1) While editing the project, seemingly (but I'm not positive it's related) while the peek file was being generated, PRE7 would get into a state of using about 40% to 50% CPU, and it would not let me do anything else. The other problem, 2) While using "Share" to export the video to WMA for playback on PC (about 180MB estimated file size according to Adobe), the file is exported to about the last remaining 5 seconds, but then PRE7 goes into that mode of hanging with 40% to 50% CPU usage.
    One time when it had this 50% CPU issue, I let it sit overnight, and the export was finished in the morning. The export that time was to a 90MB FLV for posting to the "web" according to the Share wizard. But when I was doing the above (issue #2), it went into the 50% CPU usage but didn't finish after waiting around 2 hours. Even if I were to let it sit that time, and it were to finish, it seems like something's wrong and that this is unacceptable.
    When this happens, and PRE7 goes into 50% CPU utilization, there is no pacifier or percentage bar advancing. It usually happens near 100% finished. Only one time did it complete successfully after leaving it unattended at 90% complete for an extraordinary amount of time.
    To recap:
    C:\ hard drive ---> PRE7, my project.
    E:\ USB drive ---> 12GB source AVI file and destination for export.
    I saw elsewhere on this forum that someone imported a mini-dv captured AVI into Window Movie Maker and then exported it to Mini-DV from that app. This solved that person's problem with hanging during peak file creation. I had the 50% hang issue during peak file generation but I'm not sure it was related to peak file generation. A peak file was generated in a project which, when exported with share as mentioned above, still did the hang 50% CPU issue. Regardless, I will try the import/export/movemaker thing and report back but I've been trying enough things that I wanted to take a second to ask for assistance.
    Does anyone have this issue, and is there a patch or fix?
    I might be able to provide a user mode dump of the 50% CPU adobe process. There is some call stack information and I'm wondering if developers would want this info if they don't already have a solution/fix to this bug.

    I have some more info on the hang which I've been experiencing during export/share of a project which uses an AVI as its one main clip. Adobe Premiere Elements 7 (PRE7) appears to be hanging because it's looping endlessly in ImporterAVI.prm. I'm wondering if this info can be passed onto Adobe developers and/or if I can submit this information elsewhere for such processing. I also have a process dump file which might be helpful, not to mention the original project files.
    I used Process Monitor to help analyze this situation, and prior to PRE7 getting into the endless loop, it appears to be reading from the AVI file little by little, and WMEncodingHelper.exe is writing out little by little to the destination file, both of which I would expect. When PRE7 gets to the end of the import/export, Process Monitor appears to show all the aforementioned disk activity ceasing. I see neither process reading or writing. This would be normal if the share/export procedure had completed. But PRE7 is not complete. It is hung and is operating at 50% CPU utilization.
    Far below in this post are technical details which may be helpful to an Adobe developer determine why the importer could get into this endless loop. In those details, there is a jump instruction, "jb ImporterAVI!xImportEntry+0xf32", which will always jump if a particular compare always turns out a certain way. But in my review of the counters being compared, it never will get to a point of exiting. When I modify a flag (the carry flag) to be 0, the loop exits. When I did this, my export/share of my project completed successfully. So it was done, but for some reason, PRE7 was looping and looping in its AVI importor instead of completing the export (aka "Share").
    I cannot say that this certainly indicates a bug with PRE7, but it seems to me that there's enough data for Adobe to be at least investigating this particular issue. I'm not the only person who has seen this as there was at least one other message describing the same problem which the user resolved by effectively re-creating the AVI file via a no-op import/export into and out of MovieMaker. My AVI also goes through MovieMaker, import/export, without a hitch.
    In a sense, I view PRE7's "share" as essentially an import, processing of imported information (i.e., effects and transitions), and an export. It's an import of all clips into the project at the right times, a processing of all effects, and finally an export to a destination. I realize this is simplistic, but the point I'm making is I have a simple project with a single AVI, and it appears that the "import" portion of PRE7's Share option is choking on the only clip used by this project. I also don't have much but simple transitions and a beginning/ending title on the project, so I'm not thinking this use of PRE7 is much more than what I'm doing with MovieMaker when importing/exporting this AVI.
    I fully agree that optimum hardware can be either required or critical for certain types of video editing, but PRE7 is a consumer program and I'm not using anything extensive about it and the symptoms are that PRE7 is looping on its import of a file other programs don't have a problem with. I already tried purchasing a 1TB external, which I'm glad I did, but I really think Adobe developers should look at this issue. There may be a problem with handling certain AVI clips used in a project when those clips come from certain sources. If there is an issue, perhaps it could warrant a fix that would make PRE7 more compatible with these other clips.
    Does Adobe have a procedure for people to upload (or mail) projects and files to it so that they can troubleshoot why the importer gets into this state? I also mentioned earlier that I have a full user-mode dump of the process which may be of value to a dev. Can I submit this information anywhere?

  • Traffic Shaping and Priortization in ASA

    Hi Everyone,
    I  read that traffic prioritixation is always applied outbound direction when traffic is trying to leave the ASA.
    Also i read that traffic Shaping can be applied to all outgoing traffic on a interface.
    need to know if traffic shaping and priortization means same thing in ASA ?
    There direction is always  outbound?

    Not sure I get it but let me see if I can help,
    Priority traffic: Basically allows you to split the interface into 2 different queues, one for low latency traffic and the other for best effor traffic. The one being on the Priority queue will always get served first.
    Traffic Shapping:It's the buffering QoS techique that allows you to configure a limit of bandwith that you will provide to a certain traffic class, when you reach that limit the traffic that goes over the limit will be placed into a software queue, where it will be "holded". That's the different between traffic shapping and policing as whit traffic policing you will drop the offending traffic, with shapping you will hold it (so this is not good for Low latency traffic).
    Now regarding the direction Traffic shapping can only be done on the outbound direction as queuing is an outbound process.

  • QoS Class-Based Traffic Shaping (what is Be)

    Guys,
    two questions on the output below :
    1. What is the Be, is this an amount per interval that can go over Bc or is it the total amount of data that can be sent?
    ie, i interpret the command to read, Bc is the sustained rate per interval and Be is the sustained rate plus another amount, it I would use sommat like this

    or does it work like this ?

    if it is the first one, you would not expect to be able to configure a Be of less than Bc?

    The thing is this.
    One one URL it says the following :-

    When the Be size equals 0, the interface sends no more than the burst size every interval, achieving an average rate no higher than the mean rate. However, when the Be size is greater than 0, the interface can send as many as Bc + Be bits in a burst, if in a previous time period the maximum amount was not sent. Whenever less than the burst size is sent during an interval, the remaining number of bits, up to the Be size, can be used to send more than the burst size in a later interval.

  • Traffic-shaping for delay sensitive traffic

    Hello, I would like to verify the use of a traffic-shaping policy within an MQC. I was told that you need to apply a shaping policy in order for QoS to always be engaged and not simply during times of congestion. This apparently is critical when you have apps like VoIP. 
    On a similar note, i remember reading up on Ciscopress that you might NOT want to subject VoIP to any form of Shaping as this introdues delay and can cause Jitter.
    Below is a sample config. If you can post an authoritative source on CCO that explains this I would greatly appreciate it.

    Nope.
    You only need to shape when you're dealing with a path where you know the end-to-end bandwidth is less the the egress interface's physical bandwidth and where you cannot manage congestion further downstream along the end-to-end path.

    Semi-true.
    The problem can be mitigated by decreasing the shaper's Tc.  Also, if shaper doesn't account for L2 overhead (and I believe many do not), you'll need to shape "slower" than the nominal bandwidth.  The major problem with the latter, L2 overhead varies, as a percentage, based on packet size.  So, you can either allow for worst case, which will best guarantee VoIP service, but tends to give up much of the available bandwidth, or you can shape for average case, which will make VoIP latency and jitter more variable but usually not so much to exceed its service requirements.
    You can also bypass shaping for some traffic, but then you need to shape all your other traffic even slower to guarantee the non-shaped traffic bandwidth is always available.  As you're effectively reserving this bandwidth, it then becomes unavailable for your other traffic even when unused.

    #1 An original or very old style NID with a spark gap and ground wire can even get spiders in it that could cause an issue. Inspect the NID first before thinking of changes or wiring.

    Running a good quality wire CAT5, no need for CAT6,  directly to the NID for the DSL modem jack may help. That is what I had done with mine. Depending on the number of loads or amount of wire in the house could also cause issues. But if the user's signal quality is not being pulled low due to a wiring issues, it would usually indicate a problem elsewhere. Unless there was noise being picked up on the premises wiring. Wire DSL directly to the NID and install a filter there for all other in house wiring may help. There used to be available what was called a NID Filter, and I am sure you can still get them.
    Ideal Connection if house wiring is an issue, or very old, and lengthy. Install a filter / splitter at the NID.
    Run CAT5 directly to the NID location, and install a dedicated jack for the DSL modem.
    Remove all in house wiring from the NID.
    Connect piece of CAT5 from the NID to the filter / splitter input
    Connect all existing phone lines to the phone side of the filter output.
    Connect the new DSL CAT5 directly to the NID before the filter / splitter, or to the DSL side of the filter / splitter, depending on the device purchased.
    This will take all the existing premises wiring out of the picture unless there is a short circuit or excessive load somewhere in the house.
    At this point all the single filters could be removed because the DSL is filtered at the NID.

    #2 You can test outbound to Giganews. But giganews has/had a test that will check your inbound connection from their servers to you.
    I heard from another user that
        Giganews is being watched very closely because of multipart binaries, and pirated material. MP3s and Video Content. 7 years ago you could get 10-20 MP3 albums in a single day, and that was with a 15/5 fios connection. So they started providing an encrypted connection service for an added fee. I have not messed with news groups for a very long time. Now with deep packet inspection, and other enforcement, I would not even think of it. No news I want there. But there may be content that people want? They may even be checking and limiting speed from that domain. Never tested. But let me see. It looks as if reverse trace routes and speed tests are being blocked by Verizon from Giganews to my router.

    #3 Have the provider run a local loop test to see if any problems are indicated. If there are, then they could run the test with everything in the house disconnected, except the new DSL modem connection. If issues are still indicated, then the DSL provider needs to make connections on the local loop. Another user told me that they had issues when it rained, and it was because construction had left a splice box open on a line somewhere.

  • Can Anyone Help Me Configure My Verizon (D-Link) DSL-2750B "Traffic Shaping" (QoS)?

    Well ... I just spent a wonderful hour and a half (not) bouncing around VZ technical support, etc. trying to get assistance regarding configuring my DSL router.* Between the low-quality Skype connection to India and my lack of success, I'm a little bummed out right now.
    Could one of you perhaps help me? I'm trying to configure a single, wire-attached network node (port 4 of the router) so that it can only consume up to 320 Kbps of my 750 Kbps (7.5 Mbps) DSL bandwidth ... no matter what. This results from this node consuming virtually all of the circuit's bandwidth when streaming or during bulk file transfers.
    I have tried to remedy the problem using priority with no discernible impact.
    The Quality of Service (QoS) element called Traffic Shaping (Services | QoS | Traffic Shaping), described on Page 51 of the VZ DSL-2750B User Manual , appears to be the ideal solution to my problem. Repeated attempts at activating this QoS have all resulted in no throttling of bandwidth consumption.
    My most recent attempt was to define the device on Port 4 as the DMZ host ... and then apply a new rule (320 TX, 320 RX) to this interface. Again, no joy.
    Does anyone have any experience with this service on this router?
    Am I chasing my tail trying to configure the router without validating that my circuit is not configured with "Fastpath (PSE) inactive"?
    If the circuit configuration is a potential problem, which office should I ask for at VZ customer service?

    I'll note that the Router provides a notification that "RX QOS might not operate when Fastpath (PSE) is active" when I update the router configuration page concerning Traffic Shaping. Because Fastpath is not mentioned in the User Manual, I'm guessing that Fastpath (PSE) might be a configurable attribute of the circuit servicing my PoP, but I have no idea if this is the case.
    I searched for relevant messages on this board ... without success. If this has already been addressed, please provide a link, and accept my apologies. (My Google-Fu tends to be weak.)

    11:17 - Talk with Joe.  He says either the vendor (D-Link) or premium technical support is required.  Because I had already tried with D-Link (they referred me to Verizon, as this modem was built exclusively for VZ), I explained what I had already experienced, and described how I wanted "assistance configuring my VZ DSL modem, specifically a feature described on page 51 of the User Manual."  He transfers me.
    11:23 - The automated phone system asks for my 12-digit customer ID.  I wasn't able to find it fast enough, and rolled through to Financial Services.  Eventually Trig picked up, listened to my story, and transferred me to "Technical Support" providing the direct dial number, just in case (866.945.79xx).
    11:32 - Entered the phone queue.  Lots of hissing and clicks.
    11:35 - Talk with Monika.  (The voice clarity from this point onward was on the order of 1st-generation Skype.  Between the horrible language problem -- Monika is in India don'cha know -- and the lousy line quality, this was the most frustrating.)  No matter what I said, I couldn't convey the reason for my call.  I asked to talk with a supervisor, which Monika related was not possible.  She also related that she could not transfer me to an American POC or supervisor.
    12:01 - Hung up the phone ... and started down the path that led to my post immediately above.
    I was repeatedly queried about the account name and number throughout the process.  Conveying this information was especially challenging during the Indian call segment.

  • Slow speed during peak hours for over a year

    For over a year now my connection speed has slowed during peak hours, at first it would start around 6pm and drop to 5meg or so untill midnight at which point it would go back up to 8meg all night and morning.
    As the year has gone on it has gotten worse and worse to the point now where it starts around 2pm and plummits to 1.5-2meg and remains at that till midnight at which point it goes back to 8meg.
    I have been trying to get help with this from @BTCare on twitter for serveral months now and have gotten absolutely no where, every time i get the same old "are you on wireless or wired", "try a different router/microfilter", "try another PC", "run a diagnostic test on our speed tester" etc etc and at the end of it they go silent and then when i try and get some kind of update we are back to square one of being told to fill out my details on the website to open a NEW ticket even though i currently have 5 or 6 open tickets for the same **bleep** issue.
    So i've come to try my luck here before i throw in the towel and just get rid of the **bleep** line alltogether as it is currently a waste of money.

    Hi everyone,
    In the above configuration, I configured traffic shaping to shape the syslog traffic to certain limit. My question is, Can I apply traffic shaping to perticular traffic ? What will happen to the remaining traffic ? We have ethernet hand-of to provider but total bandwidth we can use is 8M, which is controlled by ISP. We just send all the traffic without any shaping.

    Traffic shaping only works from the source. there is no way (other than policing - i.e., discard) to shape through the cloud.
    If you tried to pace the traffic through the cloud, it's got to be buffered somewhere, causing latency, and ultimately discarded frames after the buffers fill.
    Policing allows the traffic through until some threshold occurs (traditional frame = DE set at Bc, discard at Be), then the traffic is dropped.

    If we configure output traffic shaping  on an ASR 9000 interface the Service Policy is not installed, however in cco we can find that traffic shaping is supported see the next link:

    If I use a class instead of the class class-default the policy-map is correctly installed,  If I use a child policy-map under the class class-default the policy is installed also.
    Do you know if it is a restriction to use traffic shaping in an output interface and using the default class?

    hi, I am trying to configure traffic shaping on 100Mb wan circuit. and normal traffic is 60 Mb on production hour. Not sure how to calculate shaping bit value for 100 meg circuit. can anyone help.

    What Paul shows, is a good way to shape.  However, when you say 60 Mbps (of 100 Mbps), I believe most shapers don't account for L2 overhead.  So if you really want to only use 60% of your 100 Mbps, you'll need to shape 5 to 15% slower (unfortunately, L2 overhead percentages varies based on packet size - allowing for average packets sizes is usually "good enough").

  • Traffic shaping combined with queuing

    Without any traffic shaping, queuing(ex: priority or custom) is only invoked when congestion occurs... correct?
    When FRTS shaping is used and custom queuing also specified, is the queuing only invoked when traffic exceeds the shaped speed, or is it always used? ie: If no other traffic present, would traffic specified to use only 50% of shaped bandwidth use 100% of the shaped bandwidth?
    When GTS is used with a GROUP specifing an ACL, is matching traffic always limited to the shaped amount, even if no other traffic on the line? Could non-shaped traffic dominate the line or is GTS-shaped traffic guaranteed the minimum amount?

    1. when you have traffic shapping and the limit
    for the shaped value is exeeeded, all traffic arriving at the interface with
    no token in the token bucket is queued using the configured queue to thier appropriate queue..
    hence any type of queueing is not invoken unless some sort of trafiic conjestion exist either
    via shapping or otherwise.
    2. If you have a granular shaping instruction per protocol per bandwidth. The traffic over
    its shapped value would be queued and sent at maximun shape rate configured. ( that's one of the uses of shaping, to trim rate at which
    a specific traffic is sent). If its just queuing that is enable not shaping, then
    a traffic for a specific queue can use as much bandwidth as availabel when there is no other traffic, hence no congestion.
    3. if you have shaped and non-shaped traffic on an interface using GTS, the shaped traffic can use as much bandwidht as the maximum of the shaped
    value while not-shaped traffic will also use bandwidht on as see bandwidth without the need to be controlled, however non-shaped traffic will use
    all the bandwidht it needs till the interface start droping packet but the shaped traffic would be queued till there is enough token to start outputing
    from that queue. if the there are non-shaped traffic, it could be possible that they may overwelm the interface
    and prevent even shaped traffic from geting enough bandwidht to the shaped value.
