Pacman connection [SOLVED]
Hi all,
I'm sorry to open a post with a trivial question...maybe.
I'm at university, I want to install some application, but pacman doesn't connect! I've no problem on my pc, when I'm at home all it's ok. I'm thinking that it could be caused by a closed port. Which is the pacman connection port? if i'm wrong, what you can suggest?

The reason I ask is because I need madwifi for my wireless and Arch does not allow me to install this file using pacman -A ......

madwifi depends on madwifi-utils, so you'll want to download this package too. -
PACMAN: connection time out, PASV
Hello:
This seems to be a regular topic in the forum, but I tried to solve and I could not.
I just installed Archlinux, so, I'm still in console mode and can not paste the information.
When I try to do the:
pacman -Syy
for the update, I get that the connection times out.
I activated the:
XferCommand=/usr/bin/wget --passive-ftp -c -O %o %u
For some diagnose, and it hangs in the tag PASV ..., which I do not the meaning.
I uses ping and it works, I can receive and send packages.
I selected different mirrors, like some 15, and, in all, I get this error.
I changed in the /etc/rc.conf some network things: read in a forum that, in that file, I must change the:
gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"
to
gateway="default gw 192.168.1.1"
And did not work. Also I take out the "!" in the gateway, with the same results. After all that, I putted in the original form.
I'm behind a the most horrendous proxy in my college, it block many pages, but I do not thing that's the problem, because in Windows I can download from ftp, etc. After all, when using ping, it works!
Any suggestion please?
EDIT: I have a 64 bit system, if that suggest something.

Well, the "error" message is that the "connection times out", after that, it tries to reconnect to the same mirror, and again, it gives me that message. Later, it goes to another mirror -if I have it uncommented-, and so on, until my mirror list ends.
In the /etc/rc.conf I uncommented the following line:
XferCommand=/usr/bin/wget --passive-ftp -c -O %o %u
So, when I do "pacman" I get some additional information -which I can not understand-, but It connects to the server of the mirror, and some flags appears, but in the PASV flag, it hangs, until I get the connection times out message. Any idea of what indicates this flag? -passive something?-
In my /etc/resolv.conf I got:
domain: XXXXX.com
name server: XXX.XXX.X.XXX
What can I do with this information. I did not modify any file after installation, just what posted at the beginning of the thread.
I can ping to any page, for example, www.google.com, whit few lost data, and I receive the packages.

Ipw2200: no connection [SOLVED: wired network must be brought down]
SOLVED: it turns out I have to sudo ifconfig eth0 down first, then it works.
I am having a weird problem with ipw2200 on my laptop. If I try to connect to a WPA access point with wpa_supplicant, it seems to work fine and dhcpcd works. However, I have no internet. I can scan for networks and use my ethernet, but connecting with only the wireless fails. I am not using using rc.conf to bring up wireless but am doing it manually, including turning on the radio just in csae.
The problem:

The uninstall and reinstall did not work..if fact it disabled the router and put me back to doing a complete uninstall of everything..all the software, reset the router, only then would it work but with the same problem..I have been in live chat with three different techs and they all have a different solution...one thinks my adaptor might be at fault..don't buy that, one suggested I upgrade my firmware but when I log on to check for updates it tells me I have the latest verison..1.01.9, the version listed on the Linksys site for latest version for the WRT150N and the other one didn't seem to have a clue before we got cut off...so, I am back to where I was..able to access the net and can do so with no problem...it's just that I have to do a power down and power up before I can log on to the router...I use Windows for my connection..I don't know why the uninstall and the reinstall did what it did but I do not want to go through that again..If you have any other ideas I would appreciated it..Thanks and have a great day! -
Weird Pacman behavior [Solved]
The weirdest thing is happening. I reformatted and installed Duke. When I run pacman -Syu, everything goes really slow. Not the download speed, that is fast, but it pauses for about 30 seconds after every event. So it will download an update, then pause 30 seconds, then download the next update. It does this even after installing the newest pacman.
I thought maybe it was a specific problem with Duke, so I reinstalled Voodoo, which worked fine for me before. However, pacman still does the pauses on a fresh install with Voodoo. I have not changed any hardware and found nothing about this on the forums.
Any suggestions or things I can look into?

I don't see anything wrong, but it seems to be holding up on the network connection for some reason. This is a new install, so pretty much everything is stock. -
Pacman: Connection refused under Gnome
Hi!
I have following problem: When i try to install packages or try so sync pacman (running Gnome) it says for EVERY server "connection refused".
(tried most of them and I'm not using the standard arch mirror)
When I go to console with Ctrl+Alt+F1 it works normally and I can upgrade/install packages.
I there some new Gnome-internal firewall/permission thingy?My gnome is also up to date (just installed it)
iptables isn't running, the servers are pingable and I am using gnome terminal.
(it's also not working with xterm)
Apart from that, everything else seems to run normally.

Yet another "unable to find root device" problem (pacman issue) SOLVED
During this night I've been trying to solve a problem that let me without access to my ArchLinux partition.
Booting the kernel.

The thing is that I've read about chrooting, I did chroot following the steps described on the Wiki https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Change_Root but I have a problem with pacman and it's that I can't use pacman on chroot, it says: command not found. I must've done something wrong but I have no clue.
My disk is sda1 and I don't use a special partition for /boot or /home.

Well, I realised that I had another serious issue with filesystem (that was mentioned on the Archlinux's news https://www.archlinux.org/news/filesyst … equired-1/ and https://www.archlinux.org/news/the-lib- … a-symlink/ ) so I had to figure out which packages were using /lib to remove them. Also I had to disable pacman's signature checking system because as I said before it didn't seem to work.
After removing every package that happened to use /lib at that time I eventually could perform the command "pacman -Syu" and later on "mkinitcpio -p linux" worked out.

Sound/Mic Failure in Adobe Connect Solved Only by Reboot

For my job, I must attend meetings in Adobe Connect using sound and mic. I'm using a Microsoft Lifechat headset/mic. My sound & mic began to fail & problem was resolved only by rebooting my computer. The fix would last a few hours at first, but began to last for only about an hour. I"m a work at home customer service agent, and I rely on my mic & sound. I'm having no problems at this point with sound when not working--such as listening to music or watching/hearing YouTube videos.
My supervisors insist that my soundcard needs replacing, but I don't have one; mine is integrated into the motherboard, apparently. I have a backup computer which I worked off of for 2 days with my current headset, and it worked fine. It's the family computer and I must get my work computer up to par.
How can I fix this without buying a new motherboard???

Cannot enable wget in pacman.conf(solved)
Pacman does not recognize wget in /etc/pacman.conf....

Attempting to eliminate pacman's filling of my /root partition during full system download I attempted to use wget to aid in downloading. The result is noted above.
My root partition is filled...used
pacman -Scc
once but the problem repeated. Some users use wget to solve the problem so I tried that .
Attempted to use:
pacman -Q |less
The same error concerning wget occured again and no display of installed packages ensued.
So for the present cannot state which pacman version I have installed.
Will restore /etc/pacman.conf to original condition and report further on this problem.

I just got essentially the same error message while running a pacman -S subversion
then I realized that after installing network manager I had forgotten to comment the testing repo in pacman.com so I did then I ran a pacman -Sy subversion and it worked. I am not sure what happened but perhaps it maybe similar to what happened with you. See if it applies. -

Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
I had this error when upgrading. I'm using arch linux on eeepc with kdemod 3.5

But on my screen the text scrolled by so fast that i could barely read it and I could not scroll up to read the beginning.
how can I pipe the output so that it does not scroll so fast. i thought this was the "less" command but when i typed:
less pacman -Syu
or
pacman -Syu less
I got errors in syntax. I am a noob coming from 1 year using Ubuntu. I have worked thru many errors to get this far in the install.
The forums where down so I was on my own and had to use trial and error and the beginner wiki. im glad now forums back online because i never woould have figured out this klibc error on my own. -
KDE never finish to start after pacman -Syu [SOLVED]
Hi to All.
I have upgraded my system with pacman -Syu (I have to upgrade first broadcom-wl).
after upgrading to new kernel, I reinstalled pacman and nvidia and nvidia-utils
started kde and it begins to start session, but 4 processs get full cpu and never ends the session init
the processes are kbuildsyscoca (2 processes), kded4 and kconf_update
If I start twm instead of kde it works
I readed the forums and althoug not seen something similar, decide to downgrade kernel, and recompile (reinstall broadcom-wl, and nvidia drivers)
then tested again and the same results.
last test was to move my .kde and .kde4 folders to a backup and start kde again (starting from startx and not kdm)
this time it launched a lot (more than 100 kconf_update trying to update some stuff of kopete)
then deinstalled kopete and all kde-meta packages that are not needed now, but still have the same problem,
the 4 processes keep running and the desktop never comes up. (black screen with cursor I can move)
anyone with similar sympthoms?
any thing I can try?
as a summary x seems to work fine (twm starts)
wireless works fine
nvidia works fine
only kde get stuck ant the init
any help appreciated.

test with other user in my system and with root all fails with the same sympthoms
I attach here the logs of the following test done with another user (charo)
steps.
/etc/rc.d/kdm stop

rm -r /tmp/kde-charo
rm -r /tmp/ksocket-charo

so If I not forhet none, all stuff regarding kde for user charo is non existant
then started kdm
/etc/rc.d/kdm start
then login with user charo in a standard kde4 session
the splash screen comes up and only the 2 fisrt icons come up (between the first and the second almost 2 minutes passes), then the screen goes blue (default background), and a powerdevil error is shown, we can move the mouse, and clicking in the error it dissapear, but eh screen keeps blue without any data (icons, applets, panels, etc), no element is shown

Wifi connecting solved but NO solution
Hi all, I obtained an 8320 BB from my son. It was linked to an Orange UK contract.
I unlocked it and succesfully use my SFR sim card here in FRANCE. I have tried to connect to my home WiFi router and other routers such as friends with the correct key, open wifi hot spots etc.
I am satisfied that the settings are correct both for the BB and my router.
If I try to connect to an open ORANGE router (in my local shopping centre) I get the Orange entry page. No problem. I have therefore concluded that either the BB still has something that Orange put in it to prevent it from connecting other than to Orange OR as Orange suggested it has not got the correct service books. They cannot send me these service books as I am not an Orange customer. (An excellent commercial gesture!)
I am sure this is one of the so far unmentioned reasons why we are all having problems.
Can anyone throw more light on this.

Just wanted to make sure you covered he basics and have done a complete wip of your BB device. You can do this by finding a clicking on Options > click on Security Options > Click on General Settings > press your Menu Key and select "Wipe Handheld"
You can also try downloading and installing both the Desktop Software and Device Software for your device model.

Gnome crash after pacman update [solved]
hey,
i update my system and restart the computer.
Display Manager is boot up (Slim), i log in and i get crash.
"oh no .....all extensions have been disable...."
I thought it might be something with that extensions so i removed them (~/local/share/gnome-shell/extensions)
then i got the error " oh no.... a problem has occurred and the system can't recover...."
So i return the extensions back but still the same problem.
i tried to reinstall gnome might be help
(pacman -Rcns gnome)
and still the same problem.
Do you have any idea?

init=/usr/lib/systemd/systemd
Gnome just refused to work while KDE worked properly.
