Pacman not finding extra.db.tar.gz (Solved)

Funny error this morning as I went to do my daily check of updated packages at 9:00am CDT :error: failed retrieving file 'current.db.tar.gz' from ftp.nethat.com : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
error: failed to synchronize current: File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
error: failed retrieving file 'extra.db.tar.gz' from ftp.nethat.com : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
error: failed to synchronize extra: File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
I physically checked the servers and saw that indeed there were these files dated from 9/9/07 but why packman isn't seeing them, I have no idea, any help would be appreciated.

@slammer64:
I know what you mean by that
I think I tried installing grub into an image file some time and wondered why it won't work.

  • Pacman not syncing [extra] for i686

    Hi all, I've got a problem here today with my build system. After doing some tests I can see that pacman is not syncing [extra]. Nothing has changed on my configuration, it's just behaving as if [extra] isn't present in my pacman.conf (which it is of course!).
    On my i686 box:
    $ pacman -Syy
    :: Synchronising package databases...
    core 103.7 KiB 174K/s 00:01 [######################] 100%
    community 1690.4 KiB 331K/s 00:05 [######################] 100%
    Has anything changed?
    As a test on another machine, I did this: a base build with one package from [extra]:
    $ mkarchroot test_x86_64 base keychain
    It works fine. If, in /etc/pacman.conf, I change Architecture from auto to i686 it fails:
    $ mkarchroot test_i686 base keychain

    It doesn't matter what pkg from [extra] you choose, the problem isn't the package - it's the fact the [extra] repo is being ignored during the sync phase.
    Hopefully someone can help, as I am somewhat bemused right now...

    Have you searched the forums? There are at least 3 other threads on this...
    EDIT : Solution : Change your mirrors and try again. there are reports from users that some mirrors have had issues and seem to have lost the entire extra repo.
    Closing...

  • Pacman not finding virtualbox-ose?

    I am fairly new to Linux and VERY new to Arch but so far, I haven't had any problems that I couldn't solve.  I am especially enjoying using pacman.  I'm really surprised at how powerful & easy to use it is.  However, I am having a problem trying to install virtualbox-ose from the repositories.  I looked it up and it says it's available from the community repo (which I do have enabled) and it says it was just updated in Oct. but when I 'pacman -Ss virtualbox-ose' it's not found in the db.  I have also done -Sy and -Syu to make sure everything is synced.  All I can find so far is virtualbox-modules.
    I'm really sorry if this is a no-brainer and I'm asking a stupid question.  I love virtualbox, tho, and can't wait to try out the newest eLive cd so I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.  :-)
    Many thks,
    5x5

    No, I haven't.  I assumed (maybe incorrectly) that mirrors were identical in their contents.  Is this not the case?  I'll try changing that right now and see if that solves it.
    Thx for the suggestion, Allan.  :-)
    Update:
    Well, I've tried 3 other mirrors and no luck.  Just not showing up.  I know I can d'load the source from the virtualbox website but I'm not sure I'm ready to try to install something like that manually.
    Updatex2:
    Ok.  Duh.  I'm running 64 bit and virtualbox only runs on i686.  :-(  It's all there in the i686 directories although I'm not sure why virtualbox-modules is available in the x86_64 directories.  That's a mystery.
    Sorry for wasting forum space and people's time but thx for the help!

  • Exaile not finding gnome-extra [Solved]

    Hello fellow archers, I just made the switch from Openbox to GNOME and decided to try out the music player Exaile.  Everything works fine except I can't get the extra information to show such as lyrics, wiki etc.  I checked the log and it says:
    gnome-extras not available. Not showing artist or album information
    So I checked to make sure that I had installed all the gnome-extras so I did a:
    pacman -S gnome-extra
    and it shows that all of it was installed, so no problems there.  I went to Exaile's website at Exaile.org and there it says I need python-gnome2-extras or a similar named package.  Now, I can't find this package on pacman, so I assume that gnome-extra was it.  However that doesn't explain why exaile can't find my gnome-extras.  Thanks, I appreciate the help.

    Sweet, that fixed it up real nice, thanks a lot.

    Looks like another pacman-cage screw-up....  these are fun to recover from.
    Anyway, the error from pacman-cage shows that something is using a file in the pacman db folder so pacman cage can not unmount that folder to re-extract your pacman database.  Close what ever program is pointing there (pacman???), reboot if you can not figure it out, and re-run pacman-uncage.

  • Pacman not detecting core and extra repositories

    Yesterday, I installed yaourt and pacman-color. After installing these, my pacman doesnot find most of the packages(cups,firefox,zip,unzip,unrar).
    Specifically, when I search using pacman "pacman -Ss" I get results only from the community and not from core and extra.
    When I search for firefox or the above mentioned packages, I get "error: target not found: firefox"
    I checked the pacman.conf file, community and core repos are uncommented only. There is no error in pacman log also. I have uninstalled yaourt and pacman-color for now. But still the issue persists.
    I ran the command "pacman -Syyu" but still not detecting the packages.
    Not sure this info helps, but the extra.db file in /var/lib/pacman/local has a size of 0 while the other files are not size 0. Please advice

    e
    It looks like you have extra commented so pacman is being told not to look at it. Out of interest how do you know core isn't working?  Have you tried searching for a package in core - eg:
    \pacman -Ss coreutils
    Can you post your pacman.conf please?

    I have not had wifi since November when I upgraded to the newest IOS version.  I called the Apple help line and they told me some things to do and I tried them all and they worked for a few hours and then wifi shut off again.  I kept doing what they told me and it worked for a couple more days and then I could never turn it on again.  My blue tooth doesn't work either.  I had to actually increase my data usage with AT&T becuase of this.  When I did that in December I went to the Apple store and was told that it is a hardware issue and since my phone is out of warranty I would have to pay for a new phone because they could not fix the issue.  My upgrade isn't up until June 2014 so not only do I have to wait for the upgrade and I am not paying for a new phone but I have to pay $10 plus extra a month on my cell phone bill because I was going over on my Data!!!  I have been beyond upset about this and Apple is not doing anything about this nor did they offer up some way to resolve the issue because obviously it is not just some rare incident if several people are having this issue.  Who knows how many people out there have had this issue and have not said anything about it.  Now there is a newer update that I can't do because it requires wifi in order to download.
    June can not get here fast enough and I may not go back to Iphone after dealing with this for so long with no help from Apple.

    It looks like the community database file is not completely on you mirror.  Maybe you caught it in the middle of a sync?  Either weight, or switch mirror.

  • Pacman query - find a package containing a file [SOLVED 4 years ago]

    I spent 10 min in google trying to find out which arch package has the oggdec program.  I finally found it (vorbis-tools), but I was unable to do it with pacman.  I happened across this page for another distro and luckily, the arch package was named the same as the Debian package.
    How can I use pacman to find the vorbis-tool package knowing that I want to search for oggdec?  I read the pacman wiki article but didn't find what I'm looking for.

    I think dagelf meant it's not called pkgtools.
    $ sudo pacman -S pkgtools

    They are in the AUR now https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/pkgtools/ and pkgfile is a separate package.

  • [SOLVED] "warning: could not find /bin/bash, starting /bin/sh instead"

    Hello all.
    I've just installed arch, despite very little knowledge of linux (i had ubuntu for a short while before this), but I like a challenge so i thought i'd throw myself in at the deep end.
    The installation went reasonably smoothly, but now i've got it up and running (with a minimal KDE install) but when I open up the konsole, I get the message
    "Warning: Could not find '/bin/bash/', starting '/bin/sh' instead. Please check your profile settings."
    and subsequently I cannot "su jake" (jake being my username, obviously). It requests my password, but when i press return I get the response
    su: /bin/bash/: Not a directory
    which means i've obviously done something wrong, but I cant make head nor tail of the archwiki on Bash, and from googling, I cant find anyone with a similar issue. I can run from root, but it's not ideal.
    Thanks for any response as to why this might be happening, and how to fix it.

    What version of iOS do you have on your iPad (Settings > General > About > Version), and is it connected to wifi ?
    From Buy and play movies with iTunes Extras - Apple Support :
    Here’s what you need to stream the new iTunes Extras:
    Mac using OS X Mavericks v10.9.3 or later and iTunes 11.3 or later
    PC using iTunes 11.3 or later
    Apple TV (2nd and 3rd generation or later) using Apple TV software 6.2 or later
    iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch using iOS 8 or later (You need to connect to Wi-Fi. Extras won't appear if you're connected to a cellular network.)
    An active Internet connection
    You can use the steps below on your Apple TV, Mac, PC, or iOS device for any purchased, HD movie that features Extras:
    On your Apple TV, select Movies, then select your movie to see the Extras menu. Extras aren't available from the Computer tile on Apple TV (Home Sharing).
    On your Mac or PC, open iTunes and go to the Movies section in your iTunes library. Double-click your movie. If there's no Internet connection, the Extras menu will be skipped. The movie will immediately play if you already downloaded it.
    On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, tap the Videos app, then tap your movie. If you're connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi, the Extras menu will appear.
