Pad shape edit

HI, I have just started using ultiboard and I have a few questions
when I go from multisim to ultiboard is there a way to preview the package in multisim so I don't have to manually re-size it in ulti-board? This is very time consuming...
I find the pad sizes for IC's are too small. Is there a way I can quickly change the size and shape of all the pins on an IC and save that component so every time I use it it's the same?

Here are a few useful links that may help you.   Some PCB layout people have the philosophy of always creating your own PCB footprint, and although I think this can be an ok strategy, I think however for most footprint / landpattern shapes you can reuse most of the existing Ultiboard information to your advantage.
Here are my recommendations:
1. Understand the IPC naming convention, (as over 1500 new standard IPC SMT footprints were added in v11 to accomodate new part creation).
http://landpatterns.ipc.org/IPC-7351BNamingConvention.pdf
IPC Type + Pitch(P) + Lead Span Nominal(X) + Height - Pin Quantity    - all units in millimeters (mm)
Here is a useful link that we put together mapping many of the common JEDEC / EIA industry names to the IPC equivalent(s).
http://www.ni.com/white-paper/11669/en
2. Locate the Ultiboard footprint shape(s) in the database that you think may be appropriate (Place -> From database...).
a) Surface Mount ICs, in the database go to: Ultiboard Master -> Surface Mount Technology -> IC
b) RLC parts go to: Ultiboard Master -> Surface Mount Technology -> Resistor -> Chip [or SMD R&C]
c) Caps can be here: Ultiboard Master -> Surface Mount Technology -> Capacitors -> Chip [or SMD]
3. Have a new project window in Ultiboard open and just place a few of the shapes that you think may be a match for the new part that you are creating in Multisim.
4. Verify the pad and footprint shape information against the datasheet.
Tip -> The dimensioning tools are very good for this type of checking in Ultiboard (Click on Mechanical Layer and select (Place -> Standard Dimension).  Double click on the placed dimension to adjust the displayed unit settings ("Other" object selection tool needs to be active).   For general layout I also usually set my standard copper grid settings to 1 mil or better to get fine dimension/copper measurement readings (Options -> PCB Properties -> Grid&Units(tab) -> Copper Grid -> 1.00000 mil (or better)).  However, in IPC checking, I find setting units to mm and setting the grid to 0.001 mm is best.
5. Once found and verified to match, open the footprint properties and note the SHAPE name in the attribute tag - this will usually be the primary Ultiboard name in Multisim.
Here is an example of some shape comparisons that I recently did for some various SOT-23 devices (note there is not just 1, there are multiple variations)...
6. If you don't find a PCB footprint that matches, you can modify the existing ones.   I prefer the "In-place part edit" feature (Ultiboard PowerPro only).   In this mode you can quickly make the modifications to the pad shapes, pitch or overall size and height and then save the part (File -> Save to database as...) and this will allow you to more easily create new parts (that are just slight variations of the existing parts).

  • Replicating a shape edit?

    I have 2 boxs with 3 pixel radius rounded corners. I move the points on one edge of one box to reduce the width of that box. Is there some form of step and repeat that can be used to duplicate this process on the other box without ruining the  3px radius on the next box?

    I found a script which allows me to edit numerous layers on the fly though. Great for retangles.

  • What is pad edit layer?

    I am using a ground plane with "+" style contact to parts. With spoke width set at .010", contact to parts in many places is too lean, but its just right for others. This fact prevents me from widening the spoke width to solve teh problem.
    I have tried adding copper traces manually, but the ground plane
    resists my efforts by redirecting the traces or refusing to connect them
    to the plane altogether.
    How do I increase ground plane connection to some parts without forcing it on all of them?
    Thanks very much, Tod

    Hi Tod,
    Your title and and question don't seem to match. I've answered the question in the main content in Trouble working with ground plane...
    As for the Pad Edit Layer question, Ultiboard allows you to define custom pad shapes, as opposed to the standard circular, rectanglar, etc shapes. Creating a new Custom Pad Shape (click Tools > Database > Database Manager, then click the New button in the parts list, and select Custom Pad Shape), will create a document to edit the pad shape. The document will have one layer, the Pad Edit Layer

  • How to make a rectangular pth pad

    Hi,
    I'm trying to make a rectangular pth pad. Dimensions: 100mils x 60mils with a centered 42mils hole. I have searched the forum, help in Ultiboard to no avail...
    Ultiboard version 11.0.2...
    Can somebody help me ?
    Thanks and best regards,

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Here are the basic steps...
    1.  Go to the Ultiboard Database Manager (Tools -> Database -> Database Manager)
    2. In the Filter dropdown select 'Custom Pad Shape'
    3. Hit the 'Create New Part' icon
    Steps 2 & 3 shown below:
    4.Select the part to Create, select ->  Custom Pad Shape and hit 'Ok'...
    5. In the edit window, select Place -> Shape -> Rectangle   (and hold mouse button and drag to place a rectangle)
    6. Highlight the rectangle and enter the exact dimensions required in the properties box (shown below).   Use X1 and Y1 to center the pad.
    Save this pad shape to the Database (File -> Save to Database)
    7. NOW - Create your desired part with 42 mil holes.   (Use the Part Wizard, Tools -> Part Wizard  *OR* you can create a PCB Part similar to the method of creating part above).   You are only given the choice of using standard TH pads or SMT pads - this is fine as in the next step you will 'swap out' the standard pad for the new pad.
    as an example...
    8. Swap out pads.... When your part is complete with the round TH pads, highlight the TH pad(s) as needed and right-click to get the properties.  (You must be sure the select pads selection filter is enabled (5th one in)).   Go to the 'Pad' tab and select 'Custom' and choose the rectangular pad you previously created...
    9.  Complete this for any of the holes you needed and save (or resave) the updated part (shape) to the database.
    10.  Place your PCB component as needed....

  • Thermal pad under LQFP48 package

    Hello,
    I need a thermal pad in a footprint of a LQFP 48 package - the pad should have some vias to the bottom side.
    I had no issue to implement the LQFP48 package with the part wizard - but havebn't been able to use "Pins" and "Copper area" to implement a decent thermal pad into the footprint which should be then pin "49" of the package.
    How can this be done with Ultiboard.
    I would like to point out, that I would like to have this pad in the _footprint_ !

    Hi tbet,
    Generally thermal pads are added using a the rectangular SMD pin (or custom pad shape if you require a cutout). an example using the custom pad shape already in the database is the QFN40P600X600X80-49N.
    This is easiest to do after clicking the "finish" button in the part wizard, while still in footprint edit mode.
    An alternative to this is to edit the footprint after being saved using the database manager (tools > database > database manager) and edit the existing footprint.
    From here you can use the pin placement dialog (place > pins) to select your desired shape from the SMD Pin dropdown.
    If you wish to use a custom pad shape, it needs to be created before the land pattern, which is done via the database manager.
    From the database manager click the "Create New Part" button (Ctrl-N) and select "Custom pad shape", You will be brought to the custom pad shape editor where you can create the pad(usually done with a Polygon). Ensure you save the pad to the database when finished.
    The pad is then placed from the pins dropdown as noted above by selecting the Custom shape and locating your saved pad in the database.

  • Photoshop CC Shape Layer Gradients Not the Same as CS6

    I'm demo-ing Photoshop CC, and I came across an unexpected behavior when opening a CS6 PSD.
    I have a shape layer that is composed of closed curves which use the path operation "Intersect Shape Areas." In CS6, I added a layer style with a tight gradient that is vertically positioned to show a certain part of the gradient, and the gradient seems to be confined to only the visible intersection of the paths.
    In CC, however, the gradient seems to be applied to the entire region of the paths, and not just the intersection - as if there were no path operation performed. Here's an image to show what I mean:
    The only way I could reproduce the desired effect in CC was to merge the shape components. But, I'd rather be able to keep the shapes editable at a boolean level.
    Is there some setting that I'm missing?

    I don't want to just start a new thread with the same topic so thought I would tag onto this one.
    The behaviour described by K_SEREBY is something which I am also experiencing, and for me is a bit of a deal breaker. For files opened in CC which were created in an earlier version gradient fills/ styles on shape layers do not appear the same.
    The only way to have them appear the same is to do as K_SEREBY says and "merge shape components", which is a completely destructive way of working.
    It isn't something which is consistent either across Layer Styles, gradients behave as described, whereas inner glow, inner shadow and stroke for example all work as they did before, taking into account shape interaction.
    Having said that using the stroke feature of vectors available on the top bar again works differently as shown in the below image. On the left the result of 3 interacting vector shapes with a vector stroke - no stroke visible. On the right the same shape with the same stroke effect but after merge shape components has been done - vector stroke visible.
    It's all very confusing and not very pleasant to use, is there a work around? The video linked doesn't shed any light on the problem at hand, only highlighting something else which doesn't even show up for me when a shape is selected i.e. Live Vector Properties, but that is another story.

  • Annoying little plus sign on shapes

    I am putting several shapes together in Pages for use in another program. I do a command-shift-4 screen shot, open the little PNG in Preview, save it as a jpeg, and load it into the other program.
    I discovered I could make a shape editable so I could create new shapes. Cool. But then they get this doofy little plus sign on them. I do not want it in the jpeg. How do I get rid of it?

    No text is in the shape. Say I want a quadrilateral, a non-rectangular, non-regular quadrilateral. I start with a Pages square. Then. Whoa! That's it. Even though I am not doing a text thing, Pages thinks I want to so it is warning me that my shape is too small. Let's fool Pages into being more cooperative...
    I went into the shape and made some text and selected it and set the font size to 4. Then I deleted the text, since I didn't want it in the first place. Now the plus sign is gone and it looks like I want it to.
    Thanks for the question that turned out to lead me to the fix.

  • Pages custom shapes

    Hello,
    I currently have iWorks '09 in my iMac computer and running Snow Leopard OS.  I would like to have more custom shapes to choose from in the Pages program.  I also have Photoshop Elements 2008 and it has LOTS of custom shapes which have a file extension of .csh.  Can I copy some of these shapes from Photoshop and use these shape files in my Pages program and if so where do I go to in Finder to get to the file to add these Photoshop custom shapes?  If I can't use Photoshop files are there any other software programs that I can get files to use or even get files from the internet.  I still NEED to know the file directory to put these files in though.
    Thanks for your help.
    Linda

    No, the .csh is an Adobe format.
    Pages and Keynote use a special form of .svg file. You can not add to those shapes which are part of the .apps and available from the Shapes menu.
    You can by devious means import .svg files but they are simply objects in documents and not permanent members of the menus.
    Pages will happily import .pdfs, .eps and .ai files all of which are transformed into .pdfs inside Pages. You can not however use these like you do shapes, editing their fills and strokes. That has to be done externally in another application.

  • Creating new shapes

    What is the best way to create new shapes for motion. Should I make them in Illustrator or is their a place that I can download them?
    Thank you
    Vincent LeGrow

    Yes, I guess I do what to make them in Moion. But I
    was also wondering if I could download more online,
    If you choose to import Illustrator files, you can find A LOT of them to download. Some are for free, like on Adobe's Exchange community. you can also buy them as royalty-free artwork on websites like istockphoto.com
    because the library of shapes provided is very
    limited.
    Not only the library is limited, but also Motions shape editing tools are limited compared to Illustrator.
    If you feel comfortable with importing Illustrator files, you may also check out Ampede's Layerlink plugin, which allows you import separate layers from the file, just like from Photoshop files. Without this plugin Motion can only import the flattened PDF layer.
    There's also a free script for Illustrator written by Specialcase:
    http://www.motionsmarts.com/downloads.html
    It exports the curently selected path to Motion as a shape object.
    Hope this helps.

  • Problem with lines in Flash!!!

    Hello, I am currently using flash cs5.5. I am not having any software malfunctions or anything like that, I am just having a prolem with lines. When drawing with the pen, (or even pencil tool), is there anyway to make the lines you draw one solid line when you're done? For example, if tracing with the pen tool, each time you put an anchor, it creates a different line, which is fine while you're drawing it. I'm wondering is there anyway to select a certain amount of lines and make them one solid line? Let's say I am drawing an ear with the pen tool; by the time i am done drawing it, it is made up of 3 seperate lines. I did not know if there was anyway to select those three lines and make them one solid line? I know that I can double-click, but I just want to select the ear, not the entire head, (which is what happened when I double-click).
    Hopefully I got my question across, I'm not really sure how to describe it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Also too, on a 100% different note, I am also running into a different problem with lines. When drawing with the pencil tool, everytime I trace something with curves or bumps, by the time I let off the tablet, (this is not a tablet problem), the line with be in 100 different segments, even though I drew the line with one solid motion. It seems to do it more when I am working within a symbol. I do not know if there is a fix for this or not, but again, any help is greatly appreciated.
    Please do not get confused, both of these problems are 100% different from each other. The first is just something I am wondering if it exists. The second is more of a malfunction/glitch with the progam. Thanks again!
    Not sure if I understood you completely but let me suggest you a couple of things.
    1. Try drawing in Object mode. (available lower down in the tools panel. shortcut - J)
    The entire shape you draw now without releasing your mouse button will be treated as one shape object. These can be selected independently, broken apart (Ctrl + B) and even combined (Modify Menu -> Combine Objects -> Union). You can perform all the normal shape editing tasks as well on shape objects directly.
    2. For Pencil/brush tools, you can set the curve smoothness for your tools from the Properties panel -> Smoothness option.
    If you already have a line or curve drawn on Stage with too much of segmentation, you can select it then goto bottom of the Tools panel and click on Smooth button multiple times till you get the desired smoothness.,
    Hope this helps! Let me know in case of any doubts.
  • How can I wrap text in a pie in pages?
    How can I wrap text in a pie in pages?
    If you need to insert text into a shape like a pie wedge, the easiest way might be to simply use the shape - freeform tool (at the bottom of the shape menu) and create a shape and type your text in it then place the shape over your pie wedge. The text within the shape should wrap - additional controls for text can be used with the Text Inspector.
    You can edit the actual shape with Format Object > Make Shape Editable option but unfortunately, you have an option to make straight or smooth curves, but not both, so you'll need to shape the object using smooth curves and use the the bezier controls that appear as you select a control point.
  • Here we go again...autorouter getting worse!
    I doing a tight quarter remote wireless controller and it can't get to 100% as usual.
    This problem was supposed to be fixed in 8, 9, and now 10.....the autorouter shapes are not passing from UB to the autorouter!!!!
    Example, I'm using square pads in the pcb design but the router is showing and routing around ROUND shapes.....this is something tien and braulio put in as a bug even during BETA stages......why is this problem STILL around!
    Router can finish because the shape passing still is as it should be and these parts are taken from the master database!!
    Chris,
    Ok, I checked the file, and I talked to R&D... I will post this same message also in your other post.
    So, there are two issues here that I will note separately...
    1. Turning square pads into circular pads "during" routing is a cosmetic issue only, it is fixed in our internal build and is on hold to be verified on our next update or release (you can reference this report with us in the future with ID 105795). Once you finish routing, the pad shape returns to the original square. Internally, the autorouter never changes the shape for the pad, is only the graphics engine that is drawing the shape for you to see it on screen while is routing.
    2. DRC errors when finished. This is independent from the shape problem you see, and has to do with the autorouter itself overriding clearances when routing in some places. R&D is actively working to improve the autorouter and avoid this, currently you need to manually move the trace where a DRC error shows up after routing.
    This is the status update on these issues...
