Pages version of Word's notebook setting?

It is to the best of my knowledge that Microsoft Word for Macs has a setting where you can format your page as notebook paper and it comes with already set tabs and such. I was wondering if this is available on Pages. If so, where can I find it?

Although I imagine you could readily make up a template to imitate the setting.
Sure but to do that, the OP will have to study the PDF User Guide

  • Anyone know "what version" of Word that Pages exports to?

I have a business need to know what version of Word Pages exports as? It doesn't state anywhere and I am assuming if it is not a .docx it must be an older version. Any clue or ideas?

Pages 4.1 (latest version) exports Word documents with a .doc file extension.
The Finder's Get Info window reports the Word document to be a "Microsoft Word 97 - 2004 document".
When I open the exported Wod document with Word 2011 it also says it's a "type" of "Microsoft Word 97 - 2004 document". Running Word's Compatibility Check says it's compatible with Word 97-2011 (though this document is very simple)
NB Earlier versions of Pages might export to a different Word format.

  • Setting Pages as Main Word Processsor

I have iWork and Microsoft Office installed on my MacBook Pro. I've been having troubles with formatting in Word, but I don't want to delete Office just yet. Is there a way I can make Pages my default word processor? I know the option usually pops up when you first open the program, but that didn't happen. I'm not sure if the fact that Word was used previously has any impact on that. Can anyone tell me how to set Pages as default?
    Thank you in advance.

Find a .doc document on your hard drive. Select it and open the information window ( CMD + i ) then you can set "Open with" to "Pages". After doing so, hit "Change all...", that will always open documents with .doc extention in Pages. Maybe you have to do it with an .docx document too.

  • Pages & Numbers vs Word & Excel

I've seen many threads on this subject and wanted to add my own observations, which may help someone trying to make a decision on which suite they may need. Personally I use both since they have different strengths and weaknesses. I haven't worked much with Keynote or PowerPoint so I'll skip them.
I work in a WinXP eviroment so Office is what I use 8-5, mostly Excel and Access. At home, I'm a freelance photographer and custom print designer. I've done sales flyers, restaurant menus, advertising, and custom graphics. I've done a lot of custom marketing materials for my work and always fire up my Macbook, showing off what a Mac can do better than any Windows software we have.
iWork is predominantly a typesetting suite. If the end result is to be printed, then iWork really has the better tool set. Pages is easier to work with than Word for working with text boxes, images, backgrounds, and imbedded spreadsheet tables. I find it more intuitive and the tools make more sense, and it's a true WYSIWYG from sceen to printer. Numbers is easier to work with than Excel, again for printed output. Tables and graphs can be moved around to create a more flowing presentation. I also love versions... being able to go back to a previous version is a huge timesaver if a particular layout is not working out. Another plus to iWork is Pages and Numbers for iOS at $9.95 each. I can sync files to the cloud and have access to them on my iPhone anywhere anytime.
If printing is not your goal, or you need to share or collaborate, then Office is the better suite simply because the files will transfer virtually seamlessly between Mac and Windows versions. Many university professors also require .DOC and .XLS files for assignments, and Word has better tools for footnotes, bibliography, and table of contents, and as many reviewers have noted, will handle 100+ page files better than Pages. As for Excel, Numbers just can't compete when it comes to power number crunching on huge spreadsheets. Numbers is great for a budget, grocery list, or pie charts, but if you need to set up complex arrays, multi-point statistics, heavy calculus or physics equations, or need to graph a wormhole, Excel is your tool. For iOS devices, I'd recommend DataVis Documents-To-Go ($9.95 or $16.99 for Premier on AppStore) to work with Office files on your iPad or iPhone.
Amazon has Office Home & Student for $99 single license, or $117 for the 3 user family pack. iWork for $79, $99 family pack. There are free alternatives to both such as OpenOffice but I'm not getting into that debate. I've used OO but I don't like it's interface and the way it works. It's just not Pages or Numbers.
So, for my personal workflow, I prefer iWork for in-house documents, letters, simple spreadsheets, and anything that doesn't need editing outside. For simple documents, I'll just export to .DOC format and check it in Word before emailing or uploading. I share PDF's for printed output that needs approval and I use Office for collaboration files. I actually use Software McKiev's PrintShop 2 ($69.95) for more complex layouts like flyers, business cards, labels, greeting cards, custom envelopes, and advertising graphics. I try to use the best tool for the job since I've really never found a Swiss Army knife suite that does everything well.
If you're a student or writer and need tools for footnotes, TOC's, bibliographies, heavy calculating and graphing, then you'll get better mileage out of Office than iWork. If you're working more with the presentation of information in a printed format, then iWork will probably be easier to get the output you're looking for. Businesses can easily use both as I do.
Both suites have thier fans and haters... all I'm saying is they both will do the job, just some jobs are easier using one or the other.

Well first Congrats on your new Mac!
Honestly its going to be a personal choice... I use iWork at home and for personal use, but I have to use Office for Mac at work. I personally believe iWork is easier to use and seems to be more reliable.
    Next thing: Mail or Outlook?
Well I love Mail I would say Mail all the way. Super sleek look and really easy to use.
Now you are asking for an individual breakdown... so here it is:
    Excel vs. Numbers: Excel
    Pages vs. Word: Pages
    Keynote vs. Powerpoint: Keynote
So I would suggest using iWork and Mail.
    Wish you Best of luck!

I cannot access my pages documents after upgrade to OSX 10.9.1.  Pages and Numbers show they are upgraded also, but when I try to access the existing documents it says I need an upgraded version.  I cannot upgrade because Apps says I already have.  But the apps continue to report that they are in the older version.  OSX is updated.  I've tried to accept user agreements etc but no luck.  HELP

You have 2 versions of Pages on your Mac.
Pages 5 is in your Applications folder.
Pages '09/'08 is in your Applications/iWork folder.
You are alternately opening the wrong versions.
Pages '09/'08 can not open Pages 5 files and you will get the warning that you need a newer version.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but may damage/alter them. It can not open Pages '08 files at all.
Once opened and saved in Pages 5 the Pages '09 files can not be opened in Pages '09.
Anything that is saved to iCloud is also converted to Pages 5 files.
All Pages files no matter what version and incompatibility have the same extension .pages.
Pages 5 files are now only compatible with themselves on a very restricted set of hardware, software and Operating Systems and will not transfer correctly on any other server software than iCloud.
Note: Apple has removed over 90 features from Pages 5 and added many bugs:

Archive/trash Pages 5, after exporting all Pages 5 files to Pages '09 or Word .docx, and rate/review it in the App Store, then get back to work.

  • I have pages version 2.1 for the i pad. When I try to open pages documents on my mac it says You need a newer version of Pages to open this document. I have updated to the very latest Pages for mac version 4.3. Cant figure it out.

I have Pages version 2.1 for the i-pad. I have Pages on my Macbook, version 4.3. When I try to ipen a doc on my Mac it says I need a newer version to open this doc. There is no newer version. I need these docs in a bad way and cant get to them on the Mac. Any ideas?

IOS Pages 2.0 and 2.1 implement an entirely incompatible document format with Pages ’09 v4.3. It cannot open them, and you are then prompted to update to Pages v5+ which is compatible with your IOS Pages.
Unfortunately, updating to Pages v5+ is a bad thing, as it is a brand new application that has omitted over 90+ features from Pages ’09 v4.3. When you update to Pages v5+, it will move your old still functional version of the earlier Pages into /Applications/iWork. Aside from all the missing functionality, Pages v5+ will likely damage older documents that depend on specific Pages ’09 v4.3 features (including AppleScript and custom Templates).
Oh, by the way, the older and new Pages documents have the same filename extension (.pages) making document organization difficult without applying different tag colors to old and new documents.
We are recommending that users remain on their earlier Pages version. You may have to export documents from IOS Pages as Word .docx to avoid the OS X Pages update notice.

  • Page numbers in Word TOC not correct; have to open doc and update

I'm using RoboHelp HTML 9 and Word 2010.
I generate a Word doc (.docx) as one of my outputs. The Word TOC works -- that is, if I Ctrl-Click one of the items in the TOC, I'm taken to that item.
A user just came up to me asking why the page numbers are off. Here's what I see.
I use SSL to generate the Word doc.
In the TOC, I look for the topic "Setting Up Comments." It's listed as being on page 30.
I Ctrl-Click that TOC item and it takes me to the topic, but when I look at the footer, it says this is page 28.
If I go back to the TOC, right-click, and choose "Update page numbers only", Word updates the TOC, which now shows the correct page number, page 28.
In other words, generating my printed doc is now a multi-step process:
Use SSL to generate the Word doc.
Open the Word doc and update the TOC.
    Save the Word doc.
Shouldn't the TOC be right the first time around? Am I forgetting to do something?

Your example was not the best, many chapters have such a topic. However, I am seeing issues there.
In another project I am finding the page numbers correct so I will need to do some more digging.
Meantime, given the problem can be recreated using the sample, you should report it as a bug.

  • How do I make Pages the default word processing program?

How do I make Pages the default word processing program, including Appleworks files?
I want any Appleworks file I open to open in Pages - is there a setting to make that happen?

    Hello ADW,
To change the default programme used to open a filetype, Get Info on one of the files you are looking to set, the change the Open With selection to Pages.
Then click on Use this application to open all documents like this one.
You will have to repeat this for each file type you want to use that way.
    Have a wonderful day!

  • Switching between page layout and word processing

I can't seem to switch between page layout and word processing view.  I've read all the posts on this and still can't figure out why I can't just type a document into Pages.  The only option I have in page layout view is to type into text boxes, which is not what I want.  I just want to type a letter for crying out loud.
Before I get all the rants about reading User Guides, etc.  *I have*.  I've also searched on here and in-app help and just don't understand the fuzzy/non-existant answers.  Obviously, I'm a newbie, so please don't jump all over me for this.  If it was Word - I could do this in NO time.  I just find it incredibly frustrating that inputting a normal document should be so difficult.
Is "Pages" *not* a word processing program?  Is it just a cut and paste application?  Sorry for the tone - I mean no disrespect - it's just that I've been fooling around with this for DAYS and I just don't have time to spare anymore.  I really need to get this done.
Can somebody give me a straightforward answer on how to just type a normal document into pages without using text boxes?
Thanks and I apologize for not being mac-savvy.  It took some of us a lot longer to see the light =)

Here is a script doing the conversion task for you.
    Open a Page Layout document
    run this script:
    --{code}
set p2t to (path to temporary items from user domain) as text
set path_2_doc to p2t & (do shell script "date +_%Y%m%d_%H%M%S.doc")
    tell application "Pages"
      save document 1 in path_2_doc
      open file path_2_doc
    end tell
    --{code}
    that's all folks.

  • Mixed Page Layout and Word Processing Modes

Hi Everyone, I find myself increasingly using Pages 09 in word processing mode then creating a new document in Page layout mode to create a front cover for that document.
Is it possible to combine the two modes and therefore having only one file to deal with.
    Thanks in advance

    PeterBreis0807 wrote:
There is no background in Page Layout mode, just stacked objects, repeated over and over to make the document grow fat beyond belief.
Wrong! The picture which is stored in the captured page is not repeated over and over in the document.
It is stored only once exactly as a background image.
In *Page layout mode* facing pages is broken, all that switches from left to right is the footer and header.
    Perfectly normal behavior.
It's the same in Word processing format.
The setting of margins for facing pages apply to three items:
    main text layer
    header
    footer
It doesn't apply to floating items.
In Layout document there is no main text layer so the margins apply logically only to header and feater.
So the truth is that nothing is broken.
It just don't behave the way you wrongly assumed.

  • Pages and Windows Word docs

Does anyone know if you can open Word docs created on a Windows machine in Pages for iPad if you receive them via email? I have tried this with Word docs created in Office 2003 and can't get it to work. The Pages documentation says it supports Word, but I'm starting to wonder if somehow it only supports Word files created on a Mac? Or is it just that it doesn't support older versions of Word like Office 2003? Thanks much.

I've opened Word files created with Office 2008. I'm pretty certain I've opened files made with Win versions 2003 and 2007 (I went crazy testing the first week and naturally I didn't write down everything I did. Now I'm going back and doing some testing over ) What version are you using?
