Paging data using rownum

I am trying to fetch a range of data using rownum.
1. This select statmenet works
SELECT * from (SELECT id, name, seq from test order by seq desc) where rownum>=1 and rownum<=15
2. This select statmenet does not work
SELECT * from (SELECT id, name, seq from test order by seq desc) where rownum>=3 and rownum<=15
3. This select statment returns wrong rows
SELECT * from (SELECT id, name, seq, rownum as rn from test order by seq desc) where rn>=3 and rn<=15
4. This works, but two level deep
SELECT * from (SELECT id, name, seq, rownum as rn from (SELECT id, name, seq from test order by seq desc)) where rn>=3 and rn<=15
Is there a better way to fetch a range od data?
Thanks
YI

Generally, we do'nt need the query output based upon rownum because Rownum is determined after the complete resultset has been retrieved, but still if you need the query output based upon Rownum it should be something like this :

i need to retrive the last row from the select sub query without using rownum.
is there any other way to retrive the last row other than the below query.
is that the ROWNUM=1 will always retrive the 1 row of the select query ?

*(select ename from employee where dept_id=5 order by desc) where rownum=1;*

  • USING ROWNUM

    Hi,
I have 4 tables ( 1 parent - 3 child). Reference is the primary key/FK in these tables. Two of the child tables have 1..1 mapping with the parent table and I have created a view called data_view that would have all the essential columns from the parent + 2 child tables.
One of the child table (WORKFLOW) holds a 1.. m relationship with the parent table.
Now I want to move data from the 4 tables to two history
tables . One history table has the structure just similar to the data_view and the other history table has the same set of columns as the workflow table.
I tried to code a logic where by I insert the first 1000 rows into the history tables and then delete the same from the base tables. I placed this in a loop and gave the exit criteria as SQL%NOTFOUND
After inserting the first 1000 rows into the history tables and deleting the same from the base tables, the loops exits during the second iteration with the error, primary key constraint in the history table violated.
Am I missing something. Your comments on this would be appreciated

    Hi,
The problem is just beacuse of ROWNUM..
SELECT REFERENCE FROM WORKFLOW WHERE PROCESSING_TYPE IN ('K','E'))
    AND ROWNUM < 1000 );
    Instead try this statement...
SELECT REFERENCE FROM (Select Reference from WORKFLOW WHERE PROCESSING_TYPE IN ('K','E')
    Order By Reference)
    Where ROWNUM <= 1000;
Sol is if you use "order by" inside a subquery and then use ROWNUM, it should solve your problem.
My suggestion is plz dont rely on ROWNUM on these kind of operations. You can get unexpected results.
You can also use ROWNUMBER() instead of ROWNUM.
    Thanks...

  • Paging data in Spark list component

I'm wondering if paging data for Spark list components will be available in the final release of FB 4 / Flex SDK 4? Currently you will get an error when trying to bind a paged service method to a Spark list component: "Paged operations are not supported by this component".
I'm asking this because of some problems we currently have with paging data in a Flex 3 TileList. See Jira issue: http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/SDK-18758
The suggested solution in this issue is to use a Gumbo Spark TileLayout instead of a TileList. That's currently not a suitable solution since the list doesn't support paging...

    Hi Jacob and Ram,
Thank you for the information. Not the type of info I was hoping for of course . Do you guys know what I have to do to re-open my bug report (http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/SDK-18758)? I'd really like to have the Halo TileList fixed so we are able to use it properly.
    Thanks,

  • Using ROWNUM to split a job in half?

    Hi everyone,
I have a cursor in which I would like to only select half of the data so that this job can be run in two seperate jobs rather than one large one.
What is the best way to try this?
    CURSOR C_POPULATE IS
    SELECT TABLE1.ID, TABLE1.CODE, TABLE1.AMT
    FROM   TABLE1, TABLE2
WHERE  TABLE2.TAB1_ID = TABLE1.IDTABLE2 has an unknown number of TAB1_ID's but only half of them should be selected. These IDs are not in sequence as they are a subgroup of TABLE1.ID taken using a different statement.
This doesn't work, I know, but something like this added on the end of the cursor:
AND ROWNUM <= (SELECT CEIL((MAX(ROWNUM)/2)) FROM TABLE2)I know that doesn't work, I'm just using it as an example to show what I mean. Then the second job would be ROWNUM >= etc...
IS this even going to be possbile using ROWNUM at all? I don't think so.
What about finding this value - CEIL((MAX(ROWNUM)/2)) - and then putting it in a variable, having a count on every update and putting EXIT WHEN COUNT = V_HALF_ROWNUM?
If that would work, how would I go about starting the second job?
    Thanks anyone,

  • How Oracle returns queries & using rownum

Hi, I need to limit query results using rownum, but my question is regarding how Oracle retrieves its data.
Assume I have a table containing 500 records and my query without using rownum will retrieve 62 of those records. The actual query will use rownum and limit results to 20.
I have a JSP that will display those first 20. It has a simple feature for pagination, a "next" button that will retrieve the next results. So far simple enough, going forwards is easy. But how about going back.
I am trying to work out the SQL for using a "previous" button, so for example, say records 40-60 are being displayed, and say the first record on that page has a primary key value of 200, what should the SQL be to retrieve the previous 20 records using rownum ? I ask because if I do:
    select * from tablename where pri_key < 200 and rownum <=20;
I know it will retrieve 20 records, but would the query fetch its results from the beginning of the table or would it count backwards from 200 ? If it is the first way, how could I word the SQL query to go backwards from 200 ? I am pretty sure it will start from the beginning and thats what I don't want. I know there are pagination tags for jsp out there but I want to do this myself.
    Thanks

First, you need to understand that rownum is only assigned when a record is selected for output, it has nothing to do with any sort of internal order of the table (like insertion order). The same row can have a different rownum even for two invocations of the same query on the same data if the optimizer chooses a different access path. The only way to get a repeatable set of rownum is to sort the records by some field.
Second, any SQL statement you issue will be executed essentially in isolation. Oracle has no idea what query you executed previously. So, your query:
    SELECT *
    FROM tablename
    WHERE pri_key < 200 and
rownum <=20;will select a random set of 20 rows wih a primary key less than 200. It is likely to be the first (i.e. lowest values of the pk) rows, but that is not guaranteed.
The cannonical way to paginate rows is something like:
    SELECT col1, col2, ...
    FROM (SELECT col1, col2, ..., rownum rn
          FROM (SELECT col1, col2, ...
                FROM table
                WHERE <conditions>
                ORDER BY pk) ti
          WHERE rownum <= :maxrownum) to
WHERE rn >= :minrownumThe innermost query (with the <condition>) selects the appropriate rows and sorts them, in this case by the pk.
The middle query (rownum <- :maxrownum) discards the rows that would be after the last record you want to display. By using the maxrownum here, it gives Oracle information that allows it to do a fast sort on the inner query if possible.
In a fast sort, Oracle will get the first maxrownum rows from the query and sort them, then when it gets the next row, it checks if it is less than the highest value already found. If it is, it slots it into the correct place and discards the highest value, otherwise it discards that row.
The outermost query simply discards the records where the row number after sorting is less than the minimum value.
    Another alternative may be:
    SELECT col1, col2, ...
    FROM (SELECT col1, col2, ...,
                 ROW_NUMBER() OVER(ORDER BY pk) rn
          FROM table
          WHERE <conditions>)
WHERE rn BETWEEN :minrownum AND :maxrownumdepending on your database version, and your actual query.
Note tha pagination like this is expensive.

30-jan-10This doesn't look like a task where a sequence is usefull.
A sequence is a number generator that guarantees that multiple sessions will all get a different number.
Even if the sequence is fetched for differnent users (=sessions) that the same time.
This in turn means that the value returned by the sequence will depend on actions done in other sessions.
Typical task: create a new unique primary key number. The number MUST be different in all sessions.
In your case I guess that the same logic should work regardless of the session that executes it. So you need a "number generator" that works indepented from other session values. There are several ways to create such a numbered list.
The basic idea is to create a select statement that simply returns as many rows as you need. And then use ROWNUM as the number generator. Examples how to do this have already been given. LEVEL works also in hierarchical queries.
if my interpretation of your requirement is right, then all answers that really used a sequence seem to be wrong. Even if the output looks ok. At best they are just slow. To create new sequence values is a complex task and the database needs a little time for all the synchonization issues that come with it. At worst it will have gaps in the sequence because other sessions used the same value while the numbers were created.

ORA-06512: at line 7The problem is that your variable subject_obj is not in scope inside the dynamic SQL you are building. The SQL engine does not know your PL/SQL variable, so it tries to find a column named SUBJECT_OBJ in your SAM1 table.
If you need to use dynamic SQL for this, then you must bind the variable. Something like this:
EXECUTE IMMEDIATE 'insert into op_sample (select id,name,:bind_subject_obj from sam1) ' USING subject_obj;Alternatively you might figure out to use static SQL rather than dynamic SQL (if possible for your project.) In static SQL the PL/SQL engine binds the variables for you automatically.

  • Network based and a-gps, data use tests

i was trying to find this kind of info, but only found others asking.
i hope this is useful info for others, especially while roaming.
skip to the bottom for conclusion,
this is the process i took:
    i called nokia tech support,
    their phone support his horrible,
the people on the phone don't actually know anything, and have to look up everything you ask them.
    they were the worst.
    i emailed nokia tech support.
    my message was:
"i would like to know the difference between assisted gps positioning, and network based positioning. these are 2 of the 4 options on my nokia e66 for positioning methods. i would like to know if network based positioning uses internet data from my service provider to obtain my gps position. i am especially concerned with this function while i'm roaming internationally, as i do not want to be charged for roaming data use."
in about half hour they responded w/ an answer, and then 45 min after that someone else responded w/ an answer.
the first response, minus the hello's etc. was:
"In response to your email, Assisted GPS and Network Based positioning methods generate costs related to data traffic so you will be charged for data use. Only "normal" GPS and Bluetooth GPS do not generate additional costs related to data traffic.
Normal GPS is quite slow and does not work indoors. Therefore, it is recommended to enable at least A-GPS to get a faster position outdoors.
Network based and Wi-Fi positioning also allow you to update your position inside buildings, but they cannot be used for navigation."
    the 2nd response was:
"In response to your inquiry, the difference between Assisted GPS positioning (A-GPS) and Network based positioning is that,  A-GPS uses satellites while Network based positioning is based on information of your cellular network environment. It allows you to update your position inside buildings, but they cannot be used for navigation. Both positioning methods generate costs related to data traffic (unless you have configured the device to use Wi-Fi connection to make the internet connection). The cost may vary while you are on roaming. Kindly contact the service provider for information about data transmission costs."
i can also respond w/ more questions, but instead did some tests, starting with sitting home, indoors, and eventualy moving to a window w/ lots of sky.

    closed maps,
cleared all counters and the log on the phone's communication log.
    opened maps
there is a pink circle around the area i may be in,
the icon that would show gps satellite strength, changes to show the cell phone antenna icon.
but the packet data counter is sending/receiving a total of around 3-8kb immediately, and over the course of time, it keeps adding up, every 1-2 minutes, and it is shown as packet data to/from the access point "at&t internet"
over the course of ten minutes, it's been about 43kb.
and i can tell on the phone's home screen that the packet data connection becomes active when it does.
the maps kb indicator still says 0.0kb, with a line through the double arrow packet data symbol.
    test 2:
    now i exited maps,
    cleared the counters and logs
    i turned off a-gps.
enabled only integrated gps and network based.
    i open maps,
the same thing is happening as with the assisted gps on, except i connected to my home wlan once, in the middle of connecting to at&t internet 10 or so times.
everything else is happening the same.
    test 3:
    i exited maps,
    cleared the counters and logs.
    enabled only integrated gps.
i open maps, and there is no evidence of packet data connection, or wlan connection.
nothing is showing up in the logs or packet counters, and there is no pink circle around where i may be.
if i set maps to go online, w/ my wlan as the access point, or at&t internet, their respective icons show up on maps, as well as the phone's home screen.
the phone's log show respective connections are made but w/ 0.0kb, and the phone's packet counter, as well as the maps kb usage, say 0.0kb.
    test 4:
set maps to offline, w/ my wlan as access point.
    exited maps,
turned phone off for a bit to test gps from cold start.
    turned on phone,
    cleared counters/logs,
enabled only assisted gps and integrated gps.
open maps, there's no pink circle around where i may be, just the red dot of where it thought i last was.
there's about 4-5kb of data transfer,
then i bring the phone to the window where there's a lot of clear sky, and my location is found pretty fast.
i know that w/o assisted gps, w/ only integrated gps, it takes a while to get the gps signals.
i went back and forth to/from the window, and there was packet data use again only once more, not continuously like w/ network based positioning.
    so to conclude my tests,
setting the maps to be offline, still uses a-gps and network based positioning.
network based uses a more data, continuously,
which is the opposite of what i thought, i thought a-gps would use more, so i was using network based on and a-gps off while in canada. whoops.
using assisted gps uses about 5-10kb, which, when roaming, according to at&t, they charge 1.95cents/kb.
might be worthwhile for getting a quick gps signal, nothing worse than waiting forever for it to connect.
the only way to be completely clear of data use is disable network based and assisted gps, or set the phone to offline mode.

A-GPS: This uses information from cell network to get a rough idea of where you are. It then uses this information to figure out which satellites to look for. Result is a faster satellite lock. So A-GPS uses a few kB of data to get an initial position, but navigation is done using GPS satellites, which does not require ANY data connection.
Network based: This uses information from the cell network to plot the current position when GPS satellite signal is not available, ie indoors, in a tunnel, etc. Position info derived from the cell network is not as accurate as that from GPS satellites, but serves as a stopgap until GPS signal can be re-acquired. Network based positioning used your data connection EACH TIME the satellite lock is lost. So the amount of data used is dependent on the quality of access you have to the GPS satellites. If you don't lose the connection to the GPS satellites, then you won't use any data.
The ‘offline’ option within the Nokia Maps app only refers to street, POI, etc searches, NOT to A-GPS, Network based positioning or to connecting with the GPS satellites.
If you want to navigate without using ANY data connection, set A-GPS off AND set Network based positioning off AND set the Internet option in Nokia Maps to Offline. Do this and you will not use any of your data connection allowance when navigating. There is no need to put the phone into flight mode.

  • Can we load data using .xls in user define format(without using default template)

    Hi All,
I'm new bee to FDM. Part of HFM support i use FDM to load flatfile data. Just has a bit more knowledge than end user.
Requirement is that i need to load data from MS excel to Planning application via FDM.
Previously application is in Excel(Macro driven) and upstream(data) is also in Excel(multi tab).
As of my knowledge data can be loaded from .csv file(Excel save as CSV) with single tab.
Could you please let me know possibilities to load data from .xls(.xlsx) to FDM.
    Thanks in advance.

If you want to load data using Excel, utilising FDM's out-of-the-box functionality you will have to use one of the templates supplied i.e. Excel Trial Balance or Excel Multi-load template.

  • Data Federator not fetching data USING Netweaver BI Connector

    Hi Gurus,
We have upgraded the BW system to use the Data federator.
callback ID that SAP NetWeaver BI uses to contact Data Federator has been configured as mentioned in guide.
we have already configured the CONNECTOR and we are able to test the connection in DF Designer and the connection is successful. i am able to see the list of fact tables and i am saving the data source and making it final and deployying my project .
i am using the jdbc connection and  data federator strategy and  the strategy is also creating the joins and classed automatically. when i export my universe and try to create the webintelligence report i am unable to see the data .even when i execute with one  object  and one keyfigure it is same .
even when i test my data source in designer to view the data using query tester tool it is also not able show the data it takes huge time and no data getting retrieved .
i would appreciate if you could help me with this issue
    Regards and thanks

    Hi,
Which version of Data Federator are you using ? Direct access to ECC table is not yet supported using Data Federator.

  • How do I troubleshoot installation/distribution of a LabVIEW .exe which processes data using Matlab when it works on some computers but not others?

I've been given the unenviable task of troubleshooting and installing/distributing software written by a former co-worker. I've modified the LabVIEW code and built an .exe file. I've successfully installed the Labview .exe file on several computers, but it won't work on some others. What's more baffling is that I installed it successfully on one computer, uninstalled it, and tried reinstalling it with no success. In fact, it's a new error (Dr. Watson for Windows NT application error). It doesn't help that I have different versions of LabVIEW and Matlab on the target computers. Some have LabVIEW 5.1, some
have 5.0, and some don't have it at all. Some have Matlab 5.2, some have 5.3 (R11) and some have 6.0 (R12). It's also not clear to me where the Matlab m files should be located. I'm not sure if it's a LabVIEW Runtime Engine problem, or if it's a Matlab problem. I've also wondered how LabVIEW and Matlab talk to each other. When LabVIEW calls Matlab, it seems that Matlab is running in the background. In other words, clicking on the Matlab Command Window and typing "whos" or any other command/variable doesn't work.
