Palm - "and for our next trick..."

Palm - "and for our next trick... we have the latest Palm phone made by HTC and running webOS!" *applause*
I really think Palm needs to hook up with HTC, create a really good virtual keyboard and introduce, in my opinion, a real killer of a phone.  Given the fact that the Nexus One is getting it's share of complaints that require up to 48 hours for someone to respond (to an email!), I thought to myself, what if the Nexus One was running WebOS instead of Android?
I can picture it now - playing NFSU on webOS on an HTC device.
HTC designs some really nice hardware - just make sure they don't push Sense UI on you.
Post relates to: Pre p100eww (Sprint)

I think what Palms focus now is not just building the OS, but the hardware it runs on. The same mindset as Apple. I agree the HTC stuff is nicely made though.

  • And for my next trick...the vanishing UITabbar. help needed

    Developers,
I have been playing around with UITabbars (programmed in the app delegate) and i was wondering whether anyone has some code that would cause the Tabbar to vanish/fade away when a particular view was opened? i.e. some code that i can insert into that view to tell it not to display the Tabbar!
All views are welcome - if clarification is needed, please message.

I assume you're referring to a tab bar which is owned by an instance of UITabBarController. The properties of a tab bar owned by your custom view controller can be changed just like any other subview, so there wouldn't be any restriction on when it could be hidden.
The best way to hide a tab bar which is owned by a UITabBarController depends on the view hierarchy. Here are 3 points to guide you:
    1) For the iPhone, an instance of UITabBarController should only be placed at the root of the view hierarchy or brought up as a modal view controller (For additional, iPad-only options, see [Creating a Tab Bar Interface|http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/featuredarticles/ViewControlle rPGforiPhoneOS/TabBarControllers/TabBarControllers.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40 007457-CH102-SW2]);
    2) A modal view will always hide the tab bar of the view it covers;
    3) When any view controller is pushed onto the stack of a nav controller, it will hide the tab bar if you set [hidesBottomBarWhenPushed|http://developer.apple.com/library/ios/documentation/ UIKit/Reference/UIViewControllerClass/Reference/Reference.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP40006926-CH3-SW11].
You might use nos. 1 and 2 to split the hierarchy into branches that either do or don't display a tab bar. E.g., if the tab bar controller is at the root, you could spawn a branch by presenting a modal table view controller. Neither the view of that controller, nor the views of any child controllers would then display the root tab bar. Similarly if there were no tab bar controller at the root, you could present a tab bar controller modally to spawn a branch in which all the views displayed that controller's tab bar.
No. 3 is especially useful if you have a navigation chain in which some views display the bar of a tab bar controller ancestor, while other views don't. For example, say a table view displays a menu and is controlled by a nav controller which, in turn, is controlled by a tab bar controller. We want this menu page to display both the nav bar and the tab bar, which is the default behavior. But based on the selected row, we want to navigate to a detail view that may or may not display the tab bar. In that case we might store a boolean with the table data which decides whether detailViewController.hidesBottomBarWhenPushed is set to YES or NO.
    - (void)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView didSelectRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath {
    ThirdViewController *vc3 = [[ThirdViewController alloc] initWithNibName:nil bundle:nil];
if (indexPath.row % 2) // <-- odd or even row number in place of actual data
    vc3.hidesBottomBarWhenPushed = YES;
    [self.navigationController pushViewController:vc3 animated:YES];
    [vc3 release];

  • For Macs next trick: Quicktime 7.6 magically disappears! .

Who else has had QuickTime 7.6 magically disappear? I updated, it disappeared, I reinstalled it doesn't show up ANYWHERE. I installed from the Mac OSX Install disc AND from the QT  web site. Nothing.
The problem started when I went to upgrade to QT 7 Pro. I went into system preferences to upgrade... well, QT Player icon was not there. So I uninstalled QT, downloaded and reinstalled QT 7. It doesn't show up anywhere... what little info I found about this problem told me to reinstall using the Mac OSX installed Disc. So I did that, reinstalled from disc nothing... The only thing I have not done was totally reinstall the whole OS which I do not want to do quite yet until I am sure there isn't an fix anywhere.
Thanks for any help in advance.

  • Upgrading a 3-node Hyper-V clusters storage for £10k and getting the most bang for our money.

Hi all, looking for some discussion and advice on a few questions I have regarding storage for our next cluster upgrade cycle.
Our current system for a bit of background:
3x Clustered Hyper-V Servers running Server 2008 R2 (72TB Ram, dual cpu etc...)
1x Dell MD3220i iSCSI with dual 1GB connections to each server (24x 146GB 15k SAS drives in RAID 10) - Tier 1 storage
    1x Dell MD1200 Expansion Array with 12x 2TB 7.2K drives in RAID 10 - Tier 2 storage, large vm's, files etc...
~25 VM's running all manner of workloads, SQL, Exchange, WSUS, Linux web servers etc....
1x DPM 2012 SP1 Backup server with its own storage.
    Reasons for upgrading:
Storage though put is becoming an issue as we only get around 125MB/s over the dual 1GB iSCSI connections to each physical server.  (tried everything under the sun to improve bandwidth but I suspect the MD3220i Raid is the bottleneck here.
Backup times for vm's (once every night) is now in the 5-6 hours range.
Storage performance during backups and large file syncronisations (DPM)
Tier 1 storage is running out of capacity and we would like to build in more IOPS for future expansion.
Tier 2 storage is massively underused (6tb of 12tb Raid 10 space)
    Migrating to 10GB server links.
Total budget for the upgrade is in the region of £10k so I have to make sure we get absolutely the most bang for our buck.
    Current Plan:
Upgrade the cluster to Server 2012 R2
Install a dual port 10GB NIC team in each server and virtualize cluster, live migration, vm and management traffic (with QoS of course)
Purchase a new JBOD SAS array and leverage the new Storage Spaces and SSD caching/tiering capabilities.  Use our existing 2TB drives for capacity and purchase sufficient SSD's to replace the 15k SAS disks.
    On to the questions:
Is it supported to use storage spaces directly connected to a Hyper-V cluster?  I have seen that for our setup we are on the verge of requiring a separate SOFS for storage but the extra costs and complexity are out of our reach. (RDMA, extra 10GB NIC's
    etc...)
When using a storage space in a cluster, I have seen various articles suggesting that each csv will be active/passive within the cluster.  Causing redirected IO for all cluster nodes not currently active?
If CSV's are active/passive its suggested that you should have a csv for each node in your cluster?  How in production do you balance vm's accross 3 CSV's without manually moving them to keep 1/3 of load on each csv?  Ideally I would like just
a single CSV active/active for all vm's to sit on.  (ease of management etc...)
If the CSV is active/active am I correct in assuming that DPM will backup vm's without causing any re-directed IO?
Will DPM backups of VM's be incremental in terms of data transferred from the cluster to the backup server?
Thanks in advance for anyone who can be bothered to read through all that and help me out!  I'm sure there are more questions I've forgotten but those will certainly get us started.
Also lastly, does anyone else have a better suggestion for how we should proceed?
    Thanks

    1) You can use direct connection to SAS with a 3-node cluster of course (4-node, 5-node etc). Sure it would be much faster then running with an additional SoFS layer (with SAS fed directly to your Hyper-V cluster nodes all reads and writes would be local
travelling down the SAS fabric and with SoFS layer added you'll have the same amount of I/Os targeting SAS + Ethernet with its huge compared to SAS latency sitting in between a requestor and your data residing on SAS spindles, I/Os overwrapped into SMB-over-TCP-over-IP-over-Etherent
requests at the hypervisor-SoFS layers). Reason why SoFS is recommended - final SoFS-based solution would be cheaper as SAS-only is a pain to scale beyond basic 2-node configs. Instead of getting SAS switches, adding redundant SAS controllers to every hypervisor
node and / or looking for expensive multi-port SAS JBODs you'll have a pair (at least) of SoFS boxes doing a file level proxy in front of a SAS-controlled back end. So you'll compromise performance in favor of cost. See:
    http://davidzi.com/windows-server-2012/hyper-v-and-scale-out-file-cluster-home-lab-design/
Used interconnect diagram within this design would actually scale beyond 2 hosts. But you'll have to get a SAS switch (actually at least two of them for redundancy as you don't want any component to become a single point of failure, don't you?)
    2) With 2012 R2 all I/O from a multiple hypervisor nodes is done thru the storage fabric (in your case that's SAS) and only metadata updates would be done thru the coordinator node and using Ethernet connectivity. Redirected I/O would be used in a two cases
only a) no SAS connectivity from the hypervisor node (but Ethernet one is still present) and b) broken-by-implementation backup software would keep access to CSV using snapshot mechanism for too long. In a nutshell: you'll be fine :) See for references:
    http://www.petri.co.il/redirected-io-windows-server-2012r2-cluster-shared-volumes.htm
    http://www.aidanfinn.com/?p=12844
    3) These are independent things. CSV is not active/passive (see 2) so basically with an interconnection design you'll be using there's virtually no point to having one-CSV-per-hypervisor. There are cases when you'd still probably do this. For example if
you'd have all-flash and combined spindle/flash LUNs and you know for sure you want some VMs to sit on flash and others (no so I/O hungry) to stay within "spinning rust". One more case is many-node cluster. With it multiple nodes basically fight for a single
LUN and a lot of time is wasted for SCSI reservation conflicts resove (ODX has no reservation offload like VAAI has so even if ODX is present its not going to help). Again it's a place where SoFS "helps" as having intermediate proxy level turns block I/O into
file I/O triggering SCSI reservation conflicts for a two SoFS nodes only instead of an evey node in a hypervisor cluster. One more good example is when you'll have a mix of a local I/O (SAS) and Ethernet with a Virtual SAN products. Virtual SAN runs directly
as part of the hypervisor and emulates high performance SAN using cheap DAS. To increase performance it DOES make sense to create a  concept of a "local LUN" (and thus "local CSV") as reads targeting this LUN/CSV would be passed down the local storage
stack instead of hitting the wire (Ethernet) and going to partner hypervisor nodes to fetch the VM data. See:
    http://www.starwindsoftware.com/starwind-native-san-on-two-physical-servers
    http://www.starwindsoftware.com/sw-configuring-ha-shared-storage-on-scale-out-file-servers
(feeding basically DAS to Hyper-V and SoFS to avoid expensive SAS JBOD and SAS spindles). The same thing as VMware is doing with their VSAN on vSphere. But again that's NOT your case so it DOES NOT make sense to keep many CSVs with only 3 nodes present or
    SoFS possibly used.
    4) DPM is going to put your cluster in redirected mode for a very short period of time. Microsoft says NEVER. See:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh758090.aspx
    Direct and Redirect I/O
Each Hyper-V host has a direct path (direct I/O) to the CSV storage Logical Unit Number (LUN). However, in Windows Server 2008 R2 there are a couple of limitations:
For some actions, including DPM backup, the CSV coordinator takes control of the volume and uses redirected instead of direct I/O. With redirection, storage operations are no longer through a host’s direct SAN connection, but are instead routed
through the CSV coordinator. This has a direct impact on performance.
CSV backup is serialized, so that only one virtual machine on a CSV is backed up at a time.
In Windows Server 2012, these limitations were removed:
    Redirection is no longer used.
CSV backup is now parallel and not serialized.
    5) Yes, VSS and CBT would be used so data would be incremental after first initial "seed" backup. See:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399619.aspx
    http://itsalllegit.wordpress.com/2013/08/05/dpm-2012-sp1-manually-copy-large-volume-to-secondary-dpm-server/
I'd look at some other options. There are few good discussion you may want to read. See:

  • 2 Weeks With My Z10 And Wishes For The Next BlackBerry

    Verizon BB Z10
    Hardware :
I have in my possession BB Z10 from Verizon and Q10 from international carrier also Z10 from AT&T. I try to compare my own personal Z10 with the others including my Verizon Galaxy note 2, Droid Razr MAXX , iPhone 5 and Lumia 920.
My Z10 is very comfy on my hand. 1 hand usage.. I still prefer 1 hand usage for phone.. and for iOS user who switch back to BB Z10, It feels just perfectly placed on my palm
    Usage:
My personal usage of cellphone is heavy duty emails/texts/web browse with basics entertainment such as netflix and youtube and including but not limited to using notepad and some C++ editor/compiler on my android. In this test I limited it to personal usage only and work related(texts, emails, games)
    Early Usage :
The initial usage of my Z10 was very weird. it took me 12hrs of charging from 20% to full battery. Next cycle took me 8hrs and after that it took me about 4hrs 53mnt - 5hrs 15mnts give or take. The charging time awfully took a long time. I tried to resolve it with the Verizon customer service but they also did not have any idea as of why and what cause the phone to took some awful long time to charge the battery. Oh well I could live with it.
    2 Weeks After :
    - 3days into usage I got into random reboot problems that confirmed by BB support team is due to my OS 10.0.9.422. The support said it was a known issue with that OS and fixed with update of OS 10.1 which they said it was up to Verizon to push it out(no news whatsoever about the update from the Big Red Dracula Team).
-Prompted to install previous OS when connected to Link Desktop Software but prompted to install newer OS when check through OTA update
-Battery charging issue still plagued my phone until this time
-Sudden Reboot when opening heavy loaded website or bombarded by emails, texts and whatsapp all together
    - Facebook is another Horror Movie come true... messages not sent, messages late came through or the notifications won't gone even when we already checked it. If that happen I must open my Facebook app to check it again. So what's the point that it linger around in the hub??
    - Incompetent answer by the carrier customer rep as how to resolve my issues and problems.
-docs open swift and no problem
-Save screenshot or image from the item cannot be save directly to memory card.. Instead I must work around the system to save it to my phone and moved it to my memory card. What is the point..
    Conclusion :
For a person who came from iOS and android I actually quite surprised and pleased. After given consideration for a while I realized that AT&T support for the BB platform was actually better than Verizon( I owned BB 9900 and 9930 previously also). It was too bad that my Carrier(Verizon) did not support BB10 all through the way. BB10 is a very solid platform who still keep the main purpose of work functionality in their platform. iOS, Lumia and Android  evolved to mainstream system, that I felt personally, put forward in media and games too much in their system.
BB10 is simple and easy to use but also have the media/entertainment aspect as a side compliment to it and not the way around. Too bad that carrier like Verizon is very very SLOW to push update and support for this platform.
    WISHES :
I sometimes still like to use my Droid Razr MAXX. I could dock it at my home/office or bring the lapdock with me to make it a full laptop during my meeting. I do not need a tablet since my phone replace everything in one device. Tablet as convenient as they are.. will never replace my All-In-One Droid Razr Maxx. I wish BlackBerry will come out with this solution(e.g www.casetop.ca). A market that no one seems to grab as solution to work enviroment. Phone, Laptop and All Round Personal Computer at home also..
wish good luck for BlackBerry team.. Good job.. Good job indeed..

Oh I've seen the ACK message also. Sometimes your power source may intermittently not deliver the power needed and that message is generated. Usually if I see that I unplug and re plug and all is well.

How do we split our iCloud accounts but keep one iTunes account so we can share purchased content for our multiple iPhones and iPads?

You can migrate a copy of the data to a new account, then delete the other person's data from each account.  To do this, on the phone that will be changing accounts, if you have any photos in photo stream that you want to keep on the phone, save these to your camera roll by opening the photo stream album in the thumbnail view, tapping Edit, then tap all the photos you want to save, tap Share and tap Save to Camera Roll. If you have any synced notes that you want to keep on the phone, email these to yourself so you can create new notes in the new account.
Once this is done, go to Settings>iCloud, scroll to the bottom and tap Delete Account.  (This will only delete the account from this phone, not from iCloud.  The phone that will be keeping the account will not be effected by this.)  When prompted about what to do with the iCloud data, be sure to select Keep On My iPhone.  Next, set up a new iCloud account using a different Apple ID (if you don't have one, tap Get a Free Apple ID at the bottom).  Then turn iCloud data syncing for contacts, etc. back to On, and when prompted about merging with iCloud, choose Merge.  This will upload the data to the new account.  You will create a new icloud email address with you turn Mail to On.
Finally, to un-merge the data you will then have to go to icloud.com on your computer and sign into each iCloud account separately and manually delete the data you don't want (such as deleting your wife's data from your account, and vice versa).

    Hello there MizzouTrojan,
If I understand correctly you want all 6 devices to have access to a single calendar that each device gets notifications for and can edit. You can do that with an private iCloud shared calendar. First sign into www.icloud.com and use these steps from the following article to share a calendar:
iCloud: Share a calendar with others
    Share a calendar privately
Click the Share button to the right of the calendar name in the sidebar, then select Private Calendar.
Note:    You can also share the same calendar publicly. For instructions, see the next task, “Share a calendar publicly.”
Type the invitee’s email address in the Add Person field and press Return.
Click the pop-up menu with the invitee’s name and choose access privileges (View & Edit or View Only).
For each person you want to share the calendar with, repeat steps 2 and 3.
When you’ve invited everyone and set their privileges, click OK.
Invitation emails are sent from your iCloud email address to the participants you specified.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Sterling

No. Since Apple power converter work from 110 to 240 volts, no power converter is reguired.
You will need a pin adaprt. I have found my local Ace hardware store to have the best deal on them.

    Hi,
    You have 2 solutions:
1 - You can use 2 differents icloud account
2 - You use the same account but you don't sync yours contacts.
You configure that in  Settings > icloud
You activate or desactivate what you want.
    Have a nice day.

If the music is on the same computer, import the songs to your iTunes library by dragging them into iTunes or choosing File > Add to Library (Mac) or File > Add File to Library or Add Folder to Library (Windows).  If the music is on different computers you can set up Home Sharing to copy the music from one library to the other (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3819 and http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4620).

Deleting an account from a device will not delete the information from the account, if that is what you are asking.

    No.
One of you create a new AppleID and one use the existing AppleID.
But you can still use the items in each iTunes library.
Create separate computer logins for each of you.
This will give you each your own data. Contacts, calendars, photos, etc. (and your own iTunes library).
