Panasonic AG-HVX200 + MacBook Pro + FCP5 = Bliss or Nightmare?

Hello all,
I am planning my first HD shoot on the Panasonic HVX200 and am very excited. I aslo have a million nagging questions, so...
1. How do I get the media out of the HVX200 memory sticks and into a external firewire drive hooked up to my MacBook Pro?
The DP told me the Panasonic memory chips plug into a PCI/M card that is apparently only on PC's. I spoke to AppleCare and they said Apple's Express Card 34 slot is not compatible.
The AppleCare tech said to buy a PCI to USB adapter. Is there any simpler way?
2. Is my system capable of handling all this big ton HD data?
a. MacBook Pro 17" with Tiger 10.4.6 and 1GB RAM
b. Iomega Silver Series 320 gb Triple Advantage (USB2/Firewire400 & 800) Desktop Hard Drive
3. Could you recomend settings inside Final Cut to optimize the quality of the HD without blowing out every single gig of my drive?
That's it! Would appreciate any helpful feedback.

1. Well, if you have a Powerbook G4 you could use the PCMCIA slot. It accepts P2 cards. The MacBookPro has PCI express slots, so the cards do not work in them. The only options you have here are to:
a) Attach the camera via firewire and dump the card. Drawback, you lose the camera during production.
b) Get a P2 Store. GREAT solution. Hard drive that you can dump the cards to. No laptop needed.
c) Get the 5 card P2 reader. Costs as much as the P2 Store, but the P2 store is more useful.
There is no generic reader for the P2 cards, as they are very different than other PCMCIA cards.
2. Yes, it can. DVCPRO HD only requires a 1Ghz G4 or better. BUT, you will need a Firewire 800 drive or eSATA drive. There are PCI Express card adaptors for both solutions.
3. Just use the DVPCRO HD Easy Setups that match the format you shot and you shoudl be good to go.

  • Panasonic to apple MacBook Pro - pci to pc express adapter

I am a filmmaker who tries to stay on the leading edge of technology. I own a new (released this January) Panasonic HVX 200 High Definition camera. I use Final Cut Pro for editing. The Camera records on their P2 cards which record up to 100megabits/sec in the 1080i format. The P2 cards transfer data thru a PCI slot in the camera. I need to transfer data from one card to my laptop while I am recording on another. It works well on my old Powerbook which has a PCI slot, but my MacBook Pro is useless as it has a PC Express slot. Does anybody make a PCI to PC Express adapter. Both Panasonic and Apple say they are partners in creating a simple workflow in video, but apparently no one consulted the other in the design of their new products. Apple tech support just says duh!!
mean what you say and do what you mean

    Hi,
You have your terms mixed up. PCI and PCI Express
are bus designs. PCMCIA and ExpressCard are slot
    designs.
Actually, he does not. When the Personal Computer Memory Card International Association (PCMCIA) people realized that was too much of a mouthful, they rechristened it the PC Card Interface, or PCI.

  • Wireless Projection through Panasonic Projector from Macbook Pro

I need to connect a Panasonic PTF 300NT projector to my Macbook Pro running OS 10.6.8 through a wifi network. Both the projector and the computer are on the network, but I can't figure out a way to get the computer to talk to the projector. I am a teacher at a program abroad and I'll need an extremely long cord to be able to connect via wire. Can I do this?

    Patricksgolden:
I have this same setup with a G5 connected to a home network and a linksys wireless router that I connect a new MacBook Pro and my daughter connects a dell laptop. I have two printers connected to the G5 which runs Tiger. I turned on print sharing as indicated by apple documentation. This did not work. I reviewed all the postings on printing using leopard and found the following posting very helpful.
OS X 10.5 client and NON-OS X CUPS server: adding printers, solved.
What I did was update the local CUPS configuration file by going to http://localhost:631/ and editing the configuration file based on the above posting. Then I rebooted by Mac. The printers then appeared in the systems preferences default option. However they still did not work.
Finally I added them manually using the IP option and the LPD selection with the G5 IP address. Make sure you put in the print queue name. The only other change I needed to make was to use the Generic Postscript driver instead of the Epson driver(RX500). It then started to print. Using the Epson driver sent it to the printer however it completed without printing.
I hope this helps. I know it is not the step by step instructions, however if you look at the above thread there is more detail.

  • MacBook Pro Late 2013 retina Nightmare

Hi guys. I am a recent convert, moved to Mac from PC just one month back and I must say that I was thoroughly enjoying my Macbook until 1 week back, a few days after upgrading to 10.9.3 from 10.9.2 when it started misbehaving. First, it started randomly switching off after closing the lid(I had to press the power button for several seconds for it to restart), then it started just restarting/switching off while on and working. Tried SMC, PRAM reset, fixing permissions to no avail. Finally decided to roll back to 10.9.2 , the system my Mac shipped with, using internet recovery but even after wiping the mac os partition, during installation using internet recovery, it just switched off or restarted.
I have run a diagnostics test which says the hardware is ok and have taken it back to the IShop I bought it from, but they said that they couldn't find anything wrong....
    Any ideas guys?

    Hey Linc Davis,
It was not a hardware issue. I use a lot of refurbished hardware (iPhone 5, this MacBook Pro), and there's no discernible difference in dependability between refurbished and new. Apple's Refurbishment processes are stringent. I would like it if they were clearer about their refurbished warranty. I have purchased several Apple computers new, some of which displayed hardware faults out of the box (Late 2008 15" MacBook Pro), some of which didn't. Some issues only showed after some use (iBook G4).
Solution: I completely formatted the SSD and used the recovery partition to download a fresh copy of Mavericks from Apple. I then recovered my important data from a Time Machine backup, and re-installed the latest versions of my applications straight from the vendors. I did not do a "Migrate from backup" or anything like that, I treated it as an entirely fresh install. I believe migration from backups was the core of my issue.
Since then, I have not had a single freeze and the machine is more performant than before. My console is also a lot tidier. It's likely the install that came on the computer was faulty, Migration Assistant broke something, or some other bug appeared in the interim.
I'm very happy I don't need to waste time with a lengthy & tiresome replacement process. I hope this helps anyone else suffering from this issue.

  • Yosemite 2012 Macbook Pro grpahics problem

    Hi,
I guess this problem is directed at Apple rather than the users of this forum.
My trusty 2012 Macbook Pro has become a nightmare since upgrading to Yosemite.  I run my own business and use my machine primarily for Autocad, Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator.  I am having all sorts of crazy graphics-related issues - freezing, crashing, buttons appearing without text, rapidly flashing rectangles in finder to name but a few.
I've read the forums and there seems to be hundereds of people experiencing the same problems, after reading the various threads, a workaround seems to be turning off transparency, which has improved things somewhat, but its made the interface ugly.
My machine has gone from being solid, slick and a joy to work with to something ugly, difficult and undpredictable.  I'm really, REALLY fed up about this, I cant go back to Mavericks because I havent got a bootable image of the OS as its always been installed from the Apple servers.
When will this problem be fixed?  There doesnt seem to be an official statement from Apple about this anywhere and in the meantime everyone who's parted with a princely sum of their hard-earned cash for their laptops are left with a pale, watered down, flakey version of what was once a brilliant machine.

First be aware that you are NOT addressing Apple, but fellow users like yourself.
A possible solution to your problem may be as follows.
If your MBP came with Mavericks installed, by booting the MBP with the OPTION + COMMAND + R keys, it will connect you to the Apple servers and allow you to install the original OSX.
If you MBP came with Mt. Lion or Lion, you should have a copy of Mavericks in your App store account.  Download it from there.
    Ciao.

  • Live capturing from Panasonic AG-HVX200 using Final Cut and MacBook Pro

Does anyone know if the MacBoko Pro using Final Cut can capture live 1080i video from a Panasonic AG-HVX200 to an external firewire hard drive?

Great info. I'll get on those other forums.
Not that it is an 'issue,' but to answer the question I was INITIALLY thinking of getting a laptop just to capture video, and edit on my desktop. But I see that the advice of getting the biggest baddest laptop would be a better idea and I've read others say that being able to edit 'on the road,' is a great potential.
I checked out the only tested and approved by Panasonic Firestore and it's the FOCUS FS-100 that comes standard with a 100GB hard drive that provides 1.5 hours of DVCPRO HD recording time with a list price of $2,195.00.
(If using PAL, you need the PAL version)
Other than the valuable other forums mentioned here, I found a good site for FAQ's for the Mac/AG-HVX-200/FCP, at: https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/support/cs/csregistp2m/ep2main/faq/p2faq .htm
These FAQ's, above, say that "going directly into a PC is possible, but it may fail to record some frames per second. This depends on the performance of PC. So we do not recommend this method."
There is a rebate if buying the USA warrentied camera before the end of the year: a free 8GB P2 card (advertised as a $1,200 value)
I think this answers all my questions about this topic. Thanks everyone for the info and the patience.
P.S. - There is a free contest, BTW, to win the biggest badest laptop, the 17"-MacBook Pro, at http://www.pcmag.com (of all places!)

  • Does Macbook pro have PCMCIA slot for Panasonic P2 cards?

Just wondered if any Panasonic HVX200 camcorder users can tell me how they get their P2 card footage into this new Macbook pro. Does it have a PCMCIA slot, if not, how do you do it?

    Nigel,

  • How to connect macbook pro to panasonic tv with hdmi cable

How to connect macbook pro to panasonic hd tv with hdmi cable

    Hi m,
It depends which MPB you have and the inputs on the TV. The following assumes your TV has an HDMI input which will work with a computer.
This is if your MBP is from April 2010 or newer:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241
First connect the adapter to the MBP and the HDMI cable from the adapter to the TV, then go to System Preferences > Sound > Output > select HDMI.
Or if your MBP is older than that and you have a Mini DisplayPort, you can use something like this: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/CBLMDPHDMID/
If it's older than that, for video you need a DVI or mini DVI to HDMI or whatever input your TV has. For audio, you need a 3.5mm stereo mini plug to RCA or optical (Toslink), depending on what audio input your TV has.

i just bought a panasonic  50" plasma tv model TC-P50X3 and i want to connect my macbook pro with my new ty how do i do that?

Assuming your MBP is a recent model, i.e. bought in the last couple of years, and that your TV has HDMI inputs (if you've bought it new then that's a safe assumption) then you need a mini-displayport to HDMI cable.  The Apple Store sell one:

  • How to connect MacBook Pro 17" Mountain Lion with HDMI port on TV, Panasonic TC-P55ST50

Any experience with cables for connecting MacBook Pro 17" Mountain Lion with HDMI port on TV, Panasonic TC-P55ST50 (or similar)?

It depend upon the model (age) of you MBP.  If you have a Thunderbolt or minidisplay port, then you will need a minidisplay/HDMI adapter.
    eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/CBLMDPHDMI/
Or you can get an all in one:
    http://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matters-Premium-DisplayPort-Thunderbolt/dp/B004CADYD O/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1361985588&sr=1-3&keywords=minidisplay+hd mi
If you have an older mac with a DVI port, you will need something like this:
    http://www.amazon.com/DVI-HDMI-Cable-6ft-Male-Male/dp/B0002CZHN6
Note that audio is supported via HDMI for MBPs 2010 and later.  Earlier ones require tapping the audio output port.
    Ciao.

  • Having Problems connecting MacBook Pro to Panasonic TV

    Hello Forum!
This is my first post on here. I am a long time mac lover and have recently been trying to connect my MacBook Pro to my 42inch Panasonic Viera TV (TX-P42X10B)
I am using a DVI to VGA adapter and then a VGA to HDMI cable.
Now my MacBook detects the 'Panasonic-TV' but the TV screen stays black.
Now I have turned them both off and on at the same time and turned the resolution down as suggested on the my computers help - 'If the TV screen is black, select a lower resolution in Displays preferences.' But the screen stays black.
I am selected the correct port on the TV by the way!!
Thanks for reading and please help!!

However, I still don't get a view of anything on the desktop except for the standard Apple swirl.
Can you drag windows to the other display?
In the "Arrangement" tab of "Displays" system preference, you can drag the display pictures to match the actual arrangement, drag the menu bar to the other display, or enable mirroring.

  • Connecting my macbook pro to my panasonic viera tv - no picture or sound

Hi there, I'm trying to connect my macbook pro to my panasonic viera tv by using an HDMI chord and a Thunderbolt mini displayport, but I can't seem to get it to work. Im just getting a screen saver, not even the same screen saver I currently have set on my macbook either. PLEASE HELP! I'm clueless with all this kind of stuff!
    Thank you!

It sounds like you haven't switched your TV to its HDMI1 input.  HDMI1is not a channel (as in a TV channel) ... it's an input.  If you are clicking the channel buttons you will never get to your HDMI1 input.
On your TV remote there is a button that says "Input" ... click it and then use the up/down arrow keys to select HDMI1.   Note, to go back to regular TV channels you will have to click the Input button again and select 'TV.'

  • Macbook pro via HDMI to panasonic ae2000 projector not working.

    Hi
Last night I tried to connect my mid 2009 macbook pro to my panasonic ae2000 projector.
I have a mini dvi to hdmi adapter lead.
The macbook pro display would flicker when hdmi plugged in but the projector would not come up as a display device. (in display preferences) So I could not output signal too it.
I have used used same lead to connect to a philips tv without problem via hdmi.
    Any ideas ?
    thanks

    Hi
    I think its aprox 8 meters. (10 M max)
Its the same cable I use from my normal panasonic dvd/bluray player to the projector.
Except of course I unplugged player to plug in mac, (have used cable again without problem.)
    Interesting thought though.
Not sure I have a 2 meter cable (projector on ceiling) to see if I can plug that from mac to projector.

  • New 13" Macbook Pro trying to connect to a Panasonic VIERA TC-L42U30 as second monitor. I've used multiple hdmi-thunderbolt/mini displayport adapters and multiple hdmi cables and still no success. The Macbook does not sense the second monitor (TV). Help?!

I've been a Mac since 2008, so I know my way around the system pretty well. This issue, however, has me stumped. I had an iMac until now and only now am I experiencing some difficulty with my new MacBook Pro. The model I have is the newest 13" Macbook Pro model and I'm trying to connect a Panasonic VIERA TC-L42U30 42" HDTV as a second monitor via the Thunderbolt port.
It worked the first two times and hasn't worked since, after 10-15 attempts with different configurations, turning things on n off, restarting the mac, unplugging the cables, adapters, TV, resetting the P RAM, etc... I've used multiple hdmi-thunderbolt/mini displayport adapters and multiple hdmi cables and still no success. No matter what I do, the Macbook does not sense the TV as a second monitor anymore.
I took the MacBook Pro to the Apple Store, and their "genius" there had it working fine with a DVI connection to a regular monitor. The Panasonic TV I have has HDMI connections and one VGA connection which does not support HD, but no DVI option. I want an HD connection to mirror or extend my MacBook Pro screen. At the Apple Store, they didn't have a Thunderbolt/Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter, so he could not try that out for me.
Anyone else have this configuration or another similar one with a Panasonic HDTV?
    Ideas? Suggestions? Anything?! Help!!
P.S. I'm running Mountain Lion, if that wasn't already obvious. Everything is up to date in my App Store as well.
    Thanks!

    Hi There,
I have had the exact same issue but with a projector.
The issue lies with Mountian Lion 10.8.2.
I tried many a combination with no luck to get HDMI working.
Took my mac into the apple store and came to the conclusion it was the software, so I asked them to install 10.8 onto it (this is destructive so a backup is a must)
Bought my macbook home and voila, now displaying through my projector.
There is a small graphics update after 10.8.1 which seems to be the cause.
    Hope this helps.
    Thanks.
