Panic!!! "No bootable device - insert boot"-NO CHIME!
I was noodling around with a CD that had linux on it, and I started, but didn't finish, telling startup to use the Linux CD. This may or may not have something to do with my problem.
A few hours later, I just wanted to reset because I'd been doing something else, I logged out, and logged back in. When I logged in, the menu bar wasn't working right, I couldn't type things... just wonky. So I went for the full restart.
And got the message in my title.
I tried booting from leopard, booting from techtool, pulling out all four drives, unhooking every imaginable cable, opening it up and pressing the SMC button.
Nothing.
In addtion to the message, I did not get the shut down / restart chime when I went for the restart, and I haven't gotten it at all since. No familiar mac chime... very ominous.
But something tells me the linux thing might have had something to do with it.
Any ideas? Thank you!
(I am on a mac pro 266 with 9 gigs of ram running the latest version of Leopard.)
UPDATE:
Well, I just managed to get it to boot from the Linux CD... so I know the booting ability is there.
But what I've apparently managed to do is turn it into a Linux machine. I have NO idea how to make it recognize and boot from Mac disks again! boohoo! Help!

We just recently bought an iMac with Intel just a month ago. Earlier today my computer completely froze so I restarted it. When I turned it on. I received the "No Bootable device--insert boot disk and press any key". Well with the new computers, we did not receive a disk and there is no disk drive in the machine. I have an external disk drive and I unfortunately do not have an external hard drive either. I have most of the files saved on a separate computer.
I looked online and saw that when you restart the computer you can hold the Option key and it will bring up all the systems. It does work and it gives me two options. One is the windows and the other one is a hard drive but its not the OSX hard drive. I've tried both and they both do not work and send me back to the message "No Bootable device--insert boot disk and press any key". We just bought it less than a month ago and I also have a 3 year support and coverage on it that covers problems if need be but I would like to try and fix it myself.
If anyone has any other ideas or tips please let me know.OK. That's not the best news. I can take you through some Terminal commands to attempt to mount the volume if that's possible. Or, you can just erase the volume and reinstall OS X. I suppose your choice here depends on whether you have backups of your files.
Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Erase the hard drive:
1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless. -

Try starting your Mac holding the Option (Alt) key, so you should see all bootable devices on the screen. If you see the OS X volume, select it. After starting, open System Preferences > Startup Disk, and choose the OS X volume.
If you don't see anything, try holding the key after hearing the startup chime. If you still don't see anything, your hard disk could be damaged -
I previously had Windows 7 on my Mac, but removed it after returning from deployment because it had a virus that I could not remove. The only way to remove was to insert a CD/DVD with the anti-virus on, but in my absence, the optical drive was not cleaned and did not work. I had only been using partition for college, so I removed it.
Now, six months later I am trying to re-instal Windows, but after creating the partition and inserting the disk into the external Superdrive, when Bootcamp reboots I get "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". Nothing happens, I can't even type on the screen. I can reboot to Mac via the alt-option key fine, and I can see the drives, the Windows CD, etcetera, but nothing works. When I go back to Mac, Bootcamp won't work unless I delete the partition over from scratch, but I'm getting the same result.
Is the computer looking for the internal optical drive (which doesn't work, and can only be repaired by sending the whole thing back to Apple)? Is there a way to default to the external optical drive?

Hp G72 Laptop, Windows 7 64 bit,
"no bootable device-insert boot disc and hit any key" (I have no boot disc.)
I was in the process of replacing the hard drive and the computer was starting the final phase after copying all files. When it restarted the first time, I got the message. I was getting this message randomly prior to replacing the hard drive and if I turned it off for 2 or 3 hours and turned back on I would not get the message. The reason for replacing the hard drive was a "Smart Disc " imminent failure error message.Yes and yes. The final recovery disc had completed and it was moving to the next phase. It said the computer would restart several times during this phase and when it went to the first restart, the error message came up and I could proceed no further. I ctrl/alt/del and restarted, pressed escape to get the start-up menu but was lost at all the options. The information screen looked like the old hard drive info.

When your system starts press F2 at BIOS prompt and do a hard drive Diagnostics test to see if your hard drive has failed , You may get a failed short DST test which will Indicate hard drive failure . Is your machine under the 12 month warranty ??

Pleeeeessssssseeeeeee help. I was trying to setup bootcamp but when it came to instaling windows it came up with a black screen and then after 5 or so minutes it powered down. Then when I turned it on from the power button at the back of imac 21.5 inch it took longer than usaul on the white startup screen displaying no apple symbol. Then the screen went black and displayed the words "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" I have a wireless key board and doesn't conect to the mac until after startup so I cannot hold down the option key (ALT). I have ordered a wired keyboard but will take quite long to get here. Is there a way to fix it without a keyboard or mouse bearing inmind it is an all in one.

Problems with Bootcamp Assistant: no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

I got a problem setting up Windows 7 on my recently bought 13" MacBook Pro (2,3Ghz Core i5).
I used the bootcamp assistent to create a partition of 50GB on my Mac, everything is fine until now. I insert the Windows 7 disk and follow the instructions. But when I restart in spite of starting the installation of Windows 7, a black screen appears with a note saying "no bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". To exit this screen I then have to restart my Computer again, holding down the alt-key. In the following window I can just chose my Mac-Harddrive to boot from, the partition is not shown.
I used the software actualization tool to update to version 10.6.7 which is the most recent one i think.
The Windows 7 CD I use is actually a burned one. My University is a member of the msdn academic alliance and therefore offers me to download microsoft software for my work. I stress out that this is absolutly legal, I will only be allowed to use the software unitl I finished my studyings.
So as I said, I downloaded the Version of Windows 7 Professional with Service Pack 1 (x64) on my computer and then burned on a DVD. I want to add, that the file I downloaded turned out to be an iso file. At first, I just burned this file on a DVD but since it turned out that i got the above mentioned message, I burned a second DVD with the actual files of the iso (with foldernames like autorun.inf, boot, bootmgr, bootmgr.efi, efi, setup.exe, sources support, and upgrade)
I dont know if these details are of any relevance, but i guess it may be useful since I believe that the burning thing could cause the problems.
I have already browsed the Forum for quite some time now, but I didnt find a case with the exact same problem that I have, so I decided to rather ask you for help now instead of killing my brain like I did before (and I dont really have a clue neither of Macbooks nor of Windows-Computers, its always try and error for me)
I hope somebody can come up with some helpful ideas or a solution.

Apple Disk Utility won't do a proper job and won't work (and it varies, some can start the install but fails later) Has to be burned at 2X Reduced Burn Speed

Alright, I am on an Early 2011 17inch macbook pro. I have removed the superdrive to install a secondary disk drive for mass storage, then replaced the original one with an SSD blah blah blah. I do everything from the books, run bootcamp, make my USB windows 7 bootable in Bootcamp, go through everything and allocate 65gb towards windows. I have tried 4 different USB sticks and 3 different ISOs. Every time I try it, I get the same "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key". I then have to hold down the power button, then restart, hold down option/alt key, and boot regularly into mac. I also read that holding option/alt whilst starting the macbook pro will show the windows USB stick, well it never appears. I dont know what I need to do, what I am doing wrong, but nothing is working. I guess the last thing I have to try is buying a superdrive and burning ISO to disc then try that. But I dont want to go out and spend more money. Other people have gotten it to work just fine from USB, I dont know what I must do or what I am doing wrong...
Open to suggestions and in desperate need of help. Anything is appreciated.

I recently upgraded my imac mid 2010 system with a SSD hard-drive. The old "main" drive went to the place of super-drive and after reinstalling OS X into the new drive and wiping the old drive a very interesting problem happened. I started trying to install windows 7 via bootcamp. I did everything what the bootcamp assistant says and after the imac restarts itself it just says No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key. Firstly I thought that maybe something is wrong with the installation disk (i have an external super-drive connected to the imac). After restarting the imac once again i held down the option button and arrived to the screen, where it shows the avlaible boot options (different disks). Now, what I saw, was funny. The bootcamp assistant had'nt created the bootcamp drive at all. Atleast it did not show it. After doing this two-three times the result was the same. My next idea was that maybe, there is an issue with the concrete SSD model I am using. So I went back to OS X and opened the bootcamp assistant and restored the state of the OS X SSD drive. Next I did an bootcamp partition onto the old drive I have installed. But the result is still the same. Now my head is empty of ideas.
Has anybody had a similar problem and can you please give me tutorial what I did wrong or what to try next?

Yep, I did get this running. Not in a normal way (meaning the easy way). What I did, is that I just created the BOOTCAMP partition in OS X. Just let it format and create the partition where you would install BOOTCAMP.
After that I discovered that via a ISO program (WinClone) you can directly restore a previously created OS X boot image to your current computer. So, I installed a blank Windows 7 to my macbook pro, didint install any drivers and just let it work up then. Then I went back to os X (in macbook pro) and made a bootimage for the BOOTCAMP partition. After that I saved it to my external harddrive and wired it to my iMac. In iMac I just downloaded the same boot-image program and restored the bootimage that I made in Macbook Pro to iMac. After that I made an restart and the bootcamp section with windows worked well with my iMac. Install the bootcamp soft and you can do everything and everything works. FYI, you get the windows working via those steps, BUT if you either delete or do anything to make your bootcamp partition unworkable then you will have to repeat those steps again. But it´s fast non-the-less, so it shouldn´t be a problem for you.

Can't install Windows "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"
I'm running OSX 10.9.3 on my Macbook Pro 13-inch, Early 2011 and trying to install Windows 7 via Boot Camp Assistant and I'm using a flash drive loaded with bootable copy of Windows 7 Ultimate (legal, if that makes any difference).
Here's what I've been doing:
1. Plug in my flash drive, then on Boot Camp Assistant, click "Install Windows 7 or later version"
2. Set my Windows partition to 45GB and continue... so far so good...
Then the problem:
3. My computer restarts, goes to a black screen with the message "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key"
The flash drive is still plugged in but is it not being recognized or something? Nothing happens when I press any keys.
I can use OSX just fine by holding down "Alt/Option" on restart, but in my case what can I do to continue further with the Windows install? It's basically an empty partition as of now. Any help appreciated!Ive been having this problem and have been trying to figure out how to fix it for almost a week now. I have a 2011 17" MBP with the superdrive removed. Ive tried many different methods and many different methods to no avail. If anyone can help, please do!

Hello everybody, I bought a windows 7 to install with bootcamp in my MBP retina, it came buy post, a windows 7 ultimate, OEM, and for my surprise it came with a DELL computer reinstallation CD, well, I search the Internet and some guys were receiving the same CD, and the web sites were saying that it works perfectly. So, I started to install it with boot camp.
I format my USB 16 gig from scandisk for (DOS FAT) in utility's on my mac, and I went to BOOT CAMP to install the windows. As I have a superdrive and the CD from win 7, I didnt select the option of creating a image of windows 7 (the first option) and I just select the other two. So the bootcamp asked me to connect my USB stick for downloading the windows drivers, and after downloading he opened the partition screen, I choose 30 gig for my windows partition and pressed continue, after that the boot camp asked me if I have a windows installing cd, and I clicked yes, Next window, " If you have an installation CD the boot camp will delete the boot from your USB stick, press continue, and I did. After that my mac reboot, and now I have the message " No bootable device -- Insert boot disk and press any key"
It doesnt boot with the USB stick.
It doesnt boot with my cd
ALT CMD doesnt work.
No MAC no Windows? Sheeee
