Parallel development with ClearCase and Jdev

I am looking for information on "best practices", howtos, etc for configuring a ClearCase VOB repository to support parallel development of J2EE applications/components using JDeveloper in a large development team.
In particular, I am not sure how to set up the code repository (AND JDeveloper) to deal with JDeveloper's project file structure and the various metadata that are created for each developer at the same time as you need to work transparently with an exisiting repository of Java components which have already been developed and are managed outside of JDeveloper and ADF.
Unless I have missed it...documentation seems to be a bit thin in this area so...
TIA for any help/advice/pointers
Jim

I'm searching for other peoples experience developing an application that could run with either postgres 8 or Oracle 10g.
The reason of course is that many of our customers don't have the money for Oracle, but we do want to use and RDBMS.
The logical thought is that as long as the database objects are the same, the application isn't going to be that different.The other logical thought is that if you don't use any Oracle specific features then customers who have paid money for Oracle will have just wasted that investment when it comes to running such an application.
So why bother with Oracle.
The simplest way to have a single code base is to develop for a single database, the cheapest lowest common denominator and just give the customer the database with the application.
If that is true that it would greatly help the development team since they would not have to have separate teams for each type of database.But it will not be a great help to the development team if they can only use functionality that is available on both databases and works the same way on both databases. It will be a really big hindrance to the development team, increase development time and lead to more code that needs to be written.

But before we start down that path we are trying to find out if anyone else is doing something similar, and what the overall experience has been.
I have seen several applications developed using this single code base for multiple database approach and they have all been inefficient when running on Oracle to the extent that you wish they had used a flat file and hadn't bothered with a database at all.

  • Best practice: team based development with JDeveloper and CVS?

    Hi all!
    I was wondering of what is the best way to work with Jdev 9i and cvs on a same project with 5 developers whereas
    all developers use the same JPRs and JWS?
    Which of the files should be checked in to the central CVS repository, which should be remained on the local machine of each developer?
    I assume, all java and xml files might be stored in the cvs repository. But how can we make sure that new files written by a member of the team will be added to my project?
    If we also check in the JPR and CFG files the merge of concurrent JPRs will fail and our project will be shreddered ;-)
    My question: what is your best experience with simultanous development on same projects?
    Any idea?
    Many thanks,
    Stefan

    1. Put everything that your project needs under CVS control:
    - buildscripts
    - BC4J jarfiles
    - BC4J generated files (java, xml, xcfg, jpx, cpx)
    - .properties, package.html, gif, ...
    - docu
    - install scripts
    - starter batch or exec, ...
    2. Each developer should have a own JPR and JWS file. In a seperate location those files could be checked in frequently to easy allow the setup of a new Developer workstation
    3. Use a sourcecode formatter (e.g. jalopy) on the BC4J generated java files to reduce merge conflicts because of empty lines generated by JDev dialogs
    4. Adding new files is no problem:
    - if you add new BC4J objects (AM, VO, ASC, EO, VL) also checkin the bc4j package XML so new files will be added.
    - set in project settings common / input paths - "Scan source path ..."
    5. Deleting BC4J files is a problem, because JDev does not automatically remove them from the project. So if someone deletes BC4J objects, you should close the project and delete it manually from the jpr file
    6. Close the project before making a CVS update wih external tool like Tortoise because of JDev caches

  • I just found out that Apple has ceased supporting iWeb!  I have a large (50  pages) website developed with iWeb and hosted through GoDaddy.  Is there information out there about how I can move my website pages to a supported app?

    I just visited the Apple Store to investigate a new MacBook Air.  I found out that iWeb is no longer supported!!  I currently have a MacBook Pro that is less than 2 years old, running OS10.7.5.   I have a large website that I developed using iWeb (hosted by GoDaddy).  Does anyone know how I can migrate my 50+ pages to some new app?  Is there some new app?  Or will I have to start over from scratch? Ugh!!!  Thanx.

    You can still use iWeb 3 to maintain your webiste.  Just copy the Domain.sites2 file from the your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder on your MBP to the same folder on your MacBook Air.  Also copy the iWeb application from your MBP to the Applications folder on the MBA.
    In Lion and Mountain Lion the Home/Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
    To open your domain file in Lion or Mountain Lion or to switch between multiple domain files Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
    do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
    You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
    Just launch the application, find and select the domain file in your Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder that you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
    WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.
    If you want to learn about potential preplacements (which have been discussed extensively at length in this forum) do a search for  "iweb replacement".

    This comes from a post in UIX forum. I transcribe the complete text. Can someone help me? Thanks in advance.
    Params in queries with Jdev 10g Sep 22, 2003 11:50 PM
    Reply
    I had a working UIX App and used the null event to setting parameters for my query but using 10g doesn't work. I tried setWhereClause in my application module class, calling it from the data action, but i get an error (index out of bounds). If I try "setWhereClause", it works fine but it's veeeeery slow (I think the query first fechs all rows). I need something that before getting rows, initialize the query (my view object is defined with an empty where clause, because the queries will be defined in runtime via a Emp_ID). Of course, there is and index on emp_id. Help me, please...

    Hi, this is my code using BC4J and the null event in the uix page. This worked fin with Jdev 9.0.3.
    public static EventResult EstableceParametros(BajaContext bc,
    Page page, PageEvent event)
    String exp;
    DatosUsuario dat = DatosUsuario.getDatosUsuario(bc);
    exp=dat.sId_Expediente;
    ApplicationModule am=ServletBindingUtils.getApplicationModule(bc);
    ViewObject vo=ServletBindingUtils.getViewObject(bc);
    vo.setWhereClauseParam(0,exp);
    return new EventResult(page);
    Now, I have removed the where clause from the viewobject and using dataAction I do this:
    protected void initializeRequestParameters(DataActionContext actionContext)
    // TODO: Override this oracle.adf.controller.struts.actions.DataAction method
    super.initializeRequestParameters(actionContext);
    HttpServletRequest req=actionContext.getHttpServletRequest();
    String evento=req.getParameter("event");
    DatosUsuario dat = DatosUsuario.getDatosUsuario(req);
    String exp=dat.sId_Expediente;
    BindingContext bc=actionContext.getBindingContext();
    DCDataControl dc= bc.getContext(req).getDefaultDataControl();
    Object misdatos=dc.getDataProvider();
    Elendil am=(Elendil)misdatos;
    am.ParamAnotacionExp(exp);
    In my application module class:
    public void ParamAnotacionExp(String idexpediente)
    AnotacionExpViewImpl vo=getAnotacionExpView1();
    * if (idexpediente.equals(""))
    vo.setWhereClause("centro = centro and id_expediente like " + "'%'");
    else
    vo.setWhereClause("centro = centro and id_expediente = " + idexpediente);
    vo.executeQuery();
    //(1) vo.setWhereClauseParam(1,idexpediente);
    vo.setWhereClause("id_expediente = " + idexpediente);
    vo.executeQuery();
    If I use I get a null pointer, so I removed the where clause from the view object.
    Than you very much.

    Juanma -
    I finally found time to put together a test case, but unfortunately I wasn't able to reproduce the problem. Here is what I tried:
    - In JDev 9.0.3, I created a simple BC4J data model based on the Scott schema - with a single ViewObject for the Emp table.
    - I modified the EmpView query to include the following bind variable in the where clause:
    WHERE Emp.SAL < :1
    - I used the uiXML Browse & Edit Form wizard to create some simple uiXML/BC4J pages.
    - I added the following event handler to View1.uix:
    <event name="null">
    <bc4j:findRootAppModule name="EmpView1AppModule">
    <bc4j:findViewObject name="EmpView1">
    <method class="events.TestEvents" method="doNull"/>
    </bc4j:findViewObject>
    </bc4j:findRootAppModule>
    </event>
    TestEvents.doNull() looks like this:
    public static EventResult doNull(
    BajaContext context,
    Page page,
    PageEvent event)
    ViewObject vo = ServletBindingUtils.getViewObject(context);
    vo.setWhereClauseParam(0, "5000");
    return new EventResult(page);
    - When I run View1.uix in the embedded OC4J server, I can see that the EmpView VO is restricted based on the criteria specified in the call to ViewObject.setWhereClauseParam() in my null event handler. Only employees with salaries less than 5000 are displayed.
    - Next, I made a copy of my entire workspace and copied it into my jdev10g/jdev/mywork directory.
    - I then imported the workspace into 10g, allowing the UIX files to be converted to EL, and also allowing the BC4J model definition to be updated.
    - Finally, I try running again in 10g - everything works as expected.
    So, the good news is that this stuff should still work in 10g. The bad news is that it is going to take some more work for us to nail down exactly why this isn't working for your application. The best place to start would probably be for us to take a look at the null pointer exception that you are seeing - so please post the stack trace when you can.
    Thanks,
    Andy

    Andy, excuse me for the repost.
    If I try the way you explain, it worked fine, but the problem is that I'm also convertint to struts. In the data action, I have overriden this:
    protected void initializeRequestParameters(DataActionContext actionContext)
    There I try to set the params:
    // TODO: Override this oracle.adf.controller.struts.actions.DataAction method
    //super.initializeRequestParameters(actionContext);
    HttpServletRequest
    // If I uncomment the line super..., the result is the same.
    req=actionContext.getHttpServletRequest();
    String evento=req.getParameter("event");
    DatosUsuario dat = DatosUsuario.getDatosUsuario(req);
    String exp=dat.sId_Expediente;
    BindingContext bc=actionContext.getBindingContext();
    DCDataControl dc= bc.getContext(req).getDefaultDataControl();
    Object misdatos=dc.getDataProvider();
    Elendil am=(Elendil)misdatos;
    am.ParamAnotacionExp(exp);
    In my viewobject, I have this where clause:
    anotacionexp.id_expediente = :1
    Then, in my ApplicationModule class:
    public void ParamAnotacionExp(String idexpediente)
    AnotacionExpViewImpl vo=getAnotacionExpView1();
    vo.setWhereClauseParam(1,idexpediente);
    //vo.setWhereClauseParam(0,idexpediente); With 0, the result is the same.
    vo.executeQuery();
    And when I run, I get this:

    Not sure what would cause this JboException... Could you try posting to the JDev forum - I'm guessing the BC4J folks might be more familiar with this error...

    the session works like a charm, thanks.

I think I have seen the paper you are talking about on the OTN and it has got me as far as I am now with the named events (onSubmitLogin) but I am still not able to find out how errors can be signalled back to the same page, if required. I can certainly do an actionContext.setForward("error"); and follow the error forward back to the same page, but I can't get my errors to show up in the html:error tag
    Also, I am not quite sure I follow what you say about the login information being stored in a ViewObject. Is this a particular view object, and if so, which one? How can I get from having a username and password field in a JSP page to putting the right credentials into the right View Object in order to allow ADF to use the tagish JAAS stuff? (I have already changed the jbo.security settings to what I think are the correct ones based on the JDeveloper help).
    Thanks again

  • BW Upgrade and in parallel development

    hi ,
    I have some doubts abt in parallel development with bi upgrade.hope someone could clear my doubts on this.
    Currently, I'm working on a development request  that involves ODS/Cube/Infoobject change.All this are done in dev 3.5x.
    Parallely, there is another bi team that's working on the upgrade activity which will upgrade this bw 3.5x to Bi7.0. Issue is that no freeze on development done during this upgrade activity. both development and upgrade is being carried out in parallel by 2 teams.
    questions :
    1.can anyone highlight the impact of this parallel activity
    2.if i choose to stop the development work now temporarily, can i use the same transport request number which was generated in BW 3.5 dev and transport to new BI 7.0 production?  or should i choose to recollect the objects again in BI 7.0 environment and continue development after the upgrade activity completed?
    3.will i face any compatibility issue later if i stop the development work half way now?
    4.Is there any other risk of in parallel dev and upgrade?
    Hope someone could advice me on this.
    Thank you.

    Infoproviders are version independent.  While BW 7.x has different names for ODS (DSO) and additional features, there is no 'conversion' process per se at the infoprovider level. BW 7.x does provide new data transformation and data flow methodologies, but the BW 3.x methods are still functional in the BW 7.x environment.
    However.. you will need to release and migrate your 3.x development transports before you perform the BASIS level conversion programs. You will not be able to 'keep them open'. So based on this factor alone, you will need to either
    A) create and manage a dual development environment.
    B) establish a development "Freeze" schedule that follows your overall development program.
    When we converted from BW 3.5 to 7.0, we established a freeze.

    I am trying for past 5 days, Remote Server Debugging.
    But I can't acheive.Please help in this tough situation.
    I have configured Tomcat to run in debug mode by the following steps:
    1) In catalina.bat, SET CATALINA_OPTS=-server -Xdebug -Xnoagent -Djava.compiler=NONE -Xrunjdwp:transport=dt_socket,server=y,suspend=n,address=8000
    2) Then I set the JAVA_HOME AND TOMCAT_HOME in the environment mode.
    3) Then I clicked the startup.bat in the bin directory.
    In Eclipse side , I followed as,
    1) Run/Debug/Remote Java Application/New/
    In the connect tab, I gave host:localhost and port:8000
    2) Then I clicked Debug button.
    I didn't use any plugin.
    But it producing "Failed to connect to Remote VM.Connection refused."
    So I gave host:localhost and port:8080 in eclipse side,
    but this I am getting errorin eclipse side as "Failed to connect to Remote VM".In server side, I am getting error as,

    Well, once you're already using MyEclipse, I have it set up even simpler than that. Go to Window/Preferences/MyEclipse/Application Servers/Tomcat4/Launch and set the launch mode to debug.
    This works if the project is successfully setup as a webproject in MyEclipse.
    My problem is that I have a project that was not developed with MyEclipse and for some reason does not work when I set it up as a web project in MyEclipse. MyEclipse seem to do something funny with it when I establish the project. Now, if I set it up simply as a java project (as oppposed to Web Project) in myEclipse, then MyEclipse does not give me an option of deploying it.
    Any ideas about how I would go about debugging a project that's not set up as a Web Project in my eclipse?

  • Developing with JDev 10.1.3.0.1 for BPEL 10.1.2.0.2

    Hi,
    Does anyone knows if it is possible or adviseble to develop with JDev 10.1.3.0.1 to deploy the processes in OC4J BPEL 10.1.2.0.2?
    If it is, is there any issues involved?
    Tks

    in general you could develop bpel 10.1.2.02 compliant processes, but it would create a bunch of possible hazards you could run into - deployment structure, new services, workflow and so on .. add'ly you cannot deploy from jdev 10.1.3.1 to bpel 10.1.2.0.2 server -- all in all not really recommendable, and not really supported too :D

  • Versioning and parallel development streams for worldwide SAP roll-out

    Hi SDN folks,
    My customer is in the process of a worldwide roll-out of SAP. They have a transport environment for ECC that looks like this:
      D  -
    >    QA  -
    >  R   -
    >   P
    We have SAP Charm installed and running in solution manager - to manage the creation of transports in the D system.
    The problem we are facing is how to manage parallel development changes and configuration changes.
    For example - if we have developers working on a change that is in test in the QA environment - and we hit a production emergency in P - we then need to make an emergency change to the P version (which would only be available in P and R) - and transport this change through to P - in the process - overwriting the changes that our developers are working on in the D and QA environments.
    We also have the issue of objects for multiple countries being developed and configured in parallel - and so there will be version conflicts up the to the QA system as well.
    Is there any kind of solution for the management of parallel development streams  - and versioning - for all custom code / development objects and for configuration changes(other than introducing a second development system)?
    Is there any kind of 3rd party product for SAP that helps to solve this issue?
    Currently we are considering development freezes, manually renaming objects with versioning identifiers (will only work for some objects), manual backups of versions. - none of these seem to be a tidy universal solution, is there one?
    Any help / directions you can offer will be appreciated,
    many thanks,
    Julian

    Hi Julian,
    Thanks for the clarification!
    Managing production support and new development after go live is always a challenge.  It can be addressed in many ways, but it is most important to create a set of rules and stick to the procedure.  If you do not want a "second" landscape, you are going to have objects "overwritten" in the D and Q systems when you need to make a production fix -- as you must revert the object in D to the P version to make the fix.  Even with a second landscape, objects will have to be merged somehow when a fix is promoted to production.
    As I said above, what you can do is have your developers save their current development in released transports before making the production fix.  This saves a version that must be merged with the fix, anyway.  That is:
    Object A is the produciton version and must be fixed.
    Object A' is the current development version (unfinished) and is saved into a released transport request.
    In D, Object A' is reverted to the A version and corrected for the production error, creating object A'' that is promoted to production.
    Object A' and A'' are manually "merged" into A''' as the new current development version.
    Yes, objects are overwritten with this method.  However, you can always retrieve what has been overwritten since it has been saved in a released transport.
    Another option is to bypass Q for production fixes.  I.e. D -> R -> P.  However, this invalidates the objects in Q until the merged version is created in D and transported to Q.
    In any method you choose to do this -- dual development landscapes or not -- discipline and managment are a must.
    Best Regards,
    Matt

  • Problem with yosemite and parallels

    Since I have upgraded to yosemite and parallels 10 my windows 7 has been using a lot of CPU resources.  Windows 7 runs very slow and it been using almost constantly 100% of one of the quads resources.  This just started to happen when I upgraded, because I did not have this problem with Mavericks and Parallels 9 or 10. I have an iMac 2011, 8GB of Ram.  Has anybody had this issue.  Thanks.

    Thanks for the response.  I was searching on a parallels forum website and found the following:
    As from the symptoms, the issue can lie in NVRAM preferences of your particular Mac.
    Please do the following to solve:
    open Terminal application on Mac (Applications/Terminal.app)
    please type this command (you may copy-paste it to the terminal from this message):
    sudo nvram boot-args="debug=0xd4e"
    Hit Enter.
    You will be prompted to enter Mac user password. Please type it and hit Enter.
    Note: you won't see what you are typing, just type and hit Enter. If you don't have Mac user password, please create a temporary one.
    Then you may restart your Mac and the issue should be solved.
    If not - please reply me here and I'll create a ticket for you in Support.
    I did the above and it seemed to correct the problem.

  • Help, I installed parallel and windows, and opened videos (on an external hard disk) with windows, and now cannot open them with Mac, and use i movies.  How do I reverse this?

    Help, I installed parallel and windows, and opened videos (on an external hard disk) with windows, and now cannot open them with Mac, and use i movies.  How do I reverse this?

    Paragraphs help the reader, just saying.
    What are you actually trying to do? Why do you need "DVD size" folders if you're creatng an Archive on an external hard drive?
    Also, I understand burning folders instead of individual photos or albums gives you more space on a DVD.
    It makes no difference at all.
    How can I keep the captions on my photos (not events) when I print or transfer to a new folder?
    You can export while writing the metadata to the file in most cases.
    Tne only way I know is to copy photos from the Windows to folders on my HD, then copy and paste photos or albums or events to HD, then create a new folder and fill it to the appropriate DVD size.
    HD? Another HD? You use HD there in a way that makes no sense. What's the point of 'DVD size'?
    I also thought I should download future photos to my Canon programming that comes with EOS cameras and edit and then decide which photos to save to iPhoto library and which to save only to my archival HD?
    Does this have any relation to the previous questions? You know you can delete from iPhoto, right?
    You're somewhat confused and you need to
    1. Decide what exactly you want to do
    2. Then go about it.
    If I understand you correctly - and there's no guarantee that I do -  the easiest thing is to bring all your Photos into iPhoto and do everything from there.
    You can have an archive on an external disk, you can sort and select and edit with or via iPhoto

  • HT4686 How can I publish my website developed using iWeb and have all functions of the blog page work as it did with MobileMe?

    I have developed a website using iWeb and it includes a blog page selected from stock pages in iWeb.  I'm publishing it with GoDaddy and when I do that the interactive functions of the blog page don't work. (Adding comments and photos as well as searching).  Is there any simple way to host this site somewhere so that those functions work?

    No, because all those functions were MobileMe only and now that MobileMe has gone, they won't function any longer.
    To enable these to function, you either need to add them yourself or change your blogging platform to something else such as WordPress etc., and create a link from iWeb to your WordPress blog or embed the blog page using iframe into your iWeb site.
    Commenting systems such as Disqus or http://www.intensedebate.com work quite well.
