Parallel Processing in Session Beans?

Hi,
I'm trying to do a simple use case of processing (saving 1000s) of records. Essentially, MY session bean calls another session bean synchronously which does the saving. I'm iterating over 1000s of records and one by one calling the second session bean - which I feel is very inefficient. I'd like to break up the 1000 records into chunks of 200 records - hence thought of starting 5 worker threads to save these records in parallel. All the 1000 records have to be in a single transaction and hence I can't use MDBs. And I know I can't start Threads in EJBs.Any suggestions?

Is it possible to expose a Workshop business process as a session bean?
I know they are deployed as session beans, but we don't have any control over the jndi name and remote/home interface names.

Well, the answer to this is to create a JPD Proxy and call that from the session bean. I would have thought that a biz process control was useable anywhere...guess not.

Trying to use Process Control in session bean

Hi,
In Workshop, I have a session bean that is <i>trying</i> to call a method on a business process control. (The control was created in a process project and then moved to a control project to make it visible.)
The problem, in the example below, is that 'myControl' never gets set. So how do we access controls in EJBs? (I thought there was some Workshop magic that would implement this initialization.)

Caching Session Beans

Is there any way to cache Stateless-session beans? We have the following
set up in the descriptor file:

I'm not sure that I understand your question.
For stateless session beans, we keep a pool of instances. When you make a
method call, we grab an instance from the pool. When the method call
finishes, we return it to the pool.
There's probably no reason to set this value to 3000. Unless you recursively
call your own instance, you'll never use more slsb instances than you have
execute threads in the server. The default max-beans-in-free-pool value
gives you the maximum parallelism.

Hi Swapna,
from your screenshot it seems that you actually try to call the service in your Data Source Expression field. You should set path to the WSDL file here actually - this could be either URL to SAP or to filesystem, as Anton suggested (this could be faster). Have you created endpoint binding for your service in transaction SOAMANAGER? If yes, then simply download the corresponding WSDL with binding or copy the URL which leads to it. But also test whether you are able to retrieve the WSDL without logging into SAP (close all browser windows and then open a new one otherwise session ID from other browser windows can be reused).
If you have to give username and password, then setup anonymous alias in transaction SICF, for example.

How to achieve parallel processing in a single request?

Hi all,
I have a method in a Session EJB that will perform some business logic before it returns an answer to the client. The logic it will perform is to collect data from the applications database and two external systems, before sending all data to a third external system to get a response and send it back to the client. Each external system is quite slow so I would like to do all the collecting of data concurrent, parallel processing. How should I handle this? I'm not allowed to create my own threads in EJB's. Can I use MDB in some way? To the calling client this should be a synchronous call...

Usually, the request is received by a component located in the web container, such as by an HTTP request (including Web Services). This component is able to start threads to allow parallel processing. Now, if for some reason the request arrives directly at EJB level and that you cannot move its receiver to web component, I think JMS is not a viable solution because you will switch to asynchronous processing and you have no way to make your EJB wait for the responses while preserving the client request (waiting implies programmatic life cycle management, which is forbidden in EJB container). Maybe a resource adapter (JCA) can bring a solution. A resource adapter acts as a datasource (a datasource is a specialization of a resource adapter) and thus it is a logical way to implement an adapter to an external, eventually non-J2EE, resource, as the name implies :) But I don't have enough knowledge in JCA to be sure of this.

Need help with JSP - Session Bean scenario

I have massive problems with a simple JSP <--> Statefull Session Bean scenario with Server Platform Edition 8.2 (build b06-fcs)
What I do is generating a Collection in session bean returning it to JSP
and giving the List back to Session Bean.
A weird exception happens when giving the List back to Session Bean
(see Exception details below)
The same code runs without any trouble on Jboss Application Server 4.0.3
Any help would be great!

I have found a way out by passing the reference of my EJB in the HttpSession object and using it inside the javabean..

Can I use UserTransaction within a CMP Session bean?

Basically the problem is as follow:
I have the following method in a Statefull session bean:

processSomething();
notify();
the notify() basically notifying the client that then query for the something that was processed in the processSomething() method.
THE PROBLEM is that the changes have not been committed yet as the do() method is not finished yet and the container has not committed the changes.
THE QUESTION is - can I use UserTransaction inside
processSomething to commit the changes and leave the bean as CMP? I want to leave it as CMP as there are more methods on the bean and I don't want to have to manage the transactions for them.
Anyone has any other ideas?

The EJB specs say that a stateful Session Bean with CMT is NOT allowed to use the UserTransaction; see page 361 of the EJB2.0 specification. So combining them will not (or should not) work.
I suggest CMT+SessionSynchronization combined with using a flag to indicate whether notify should be called or not. Otherwise, you could try splitting up the bean into two beans: one with CMT and another one without. The one without CMT could use the UserTransaction and notify.

JDEV 10.1.3 How to manipulate/Debug IndirectList from ejb 3.0 session bean

I was debugging my session bean a seen that element data for the employeesCollection was empty.
I didn't understood why my java client was throwing an error when i accessed manually the Departments collection and get the employeeCollection from the first entry in the collection. What was confusing me was that my master/detail jfs application was displaying these data. From where ? how was it possible ? it was the same session bean !
This is the reason i debugged the session bean return object and seen that the collection was also empty as the from executing from my java client application. I have seen the type of the object that was not a collection but IndirectList.
So my question ! how is it possible to load the collection of this type ? Which method the data control is executing to load it ? Where may i found a description of this very interesting process ?

EJB 3.0 Session Bean Inheritence

Hi all,
Can one stateless session bean extend another? I get "no" for an answer during deployment of my EJB module. I'm using NetBeans 5.5 with Sun App Server 9.0.
For example:

MySessionBean1 implements ...some remote interface {
@Stateless
MySubBean extends MySessionBean1 implements some more interfaces {
}

There is no support for "component" inheritance in EJB. You are free to use implementation
inheritance to implement your bean class, but the fact that a super-class happens to be the
bean class of a different EJB has no bearing on the processing of the sub-class. So, for example,
the fact that MySessionBean1 has "some remote interface" will not automatically make
"some remote interface" one of MySubBean's remote interfaces.

JDev 10.1.3: Problem deploying a session bean to embedded OC4J

JDeveloper 10.1.3, TopLink, OC4J, WinXP, java 1.4.2_05.
I used TopLink to create a set of Java objects from a DB Schema, then created a simple Session Bean to read some of the objects. Everything compiles fine.
JAVA_HOME points to the JDK (not JRE) and CLASSPATH is empty (undefined).
When I try to Run my session bean in the jdeveloper embedded oc4j, I get this message. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hot delpoyment with TopLink and Stateless Session Beans

What is the recommended procedure for making hot deployment of Stateless session beans work with toplink in WLS 7.0sp1 and oc4j (9.0.3)
My current setup is as follows using WLS 7.0sp1:
A stateless session bean is accessing toplink enabled persistent java classes via the SessionManager. I'm currently using the class loader of the stateless session bean:

Everything is working as such. My session bean can read and write the persistent java classes. However if I redeploy the stateless session bean jar file the toplink session is not reinitalized. This means that new settings in the session.xml are not used. I addition I get other errors.

This is a recent post note I found on the same topic:
It all hinges on whether the TopLink ServerSession class has
been loaded by a classloader which is actually thrown away
during the hot deployment process. If this is the case, then
hot deployment causes the ServerSession to go out of scope
and finalize methods take care of logging it out properly.
If you deploy your TopLink Project on the Sytem class path then
it definately won't work. You'd have to restart the server every time.
But if the TopLink Project is deployed inside of an .ear file
and if you pass the correct ClassLoader to the
SessionManager.getSession( .... ) call then TopLink Session will
be re-started when you hot deploy the .earBased on this, the solution might be to deploy your EJBs in an ear file. Everything else looks OK. Can you try this and let us know?

How to get access via RMI from a session bean to a remote session bean?

I have 2 J2EE applications in two different Sun Application Servers (8.0 PE). I would like to get access from one Session Bean "SB1" into Application A to Session Bean "BrickFacade" within Application B.
My Java Code from "SB1":

Calling Local Stateless session bean from Spring in weblogic 10.3

We are in the process of upgrading to Weblogic 10.3 from OC4J (OAS). We are using Spring and Stateless Session EJB 3 Local beans (Don't ask me why, it is decided before I came to the project).
Previously (OC4J):
-> There is no ejb-jar.xml. EJBs are configured with annotation @Stateless. No "name" or "mappedName" are defined.
Spring POJOs access EJBs by using "EJBMODULENAME_<<EJBBeanClass>>Local" as JNDI Name. I think this strange JNDI name is what OC4J assigns when there is no explicit JNDI name defined.
Sample Spring Bean configuration -

So far I have tried,
1. @EJB annotation works but, I don't want to add @EJB annotations in the entire application. Since we are using Spring and EJB3, I am trying to avoid mixing them -
2. java:comp/env is supposed to work (since it is a local session bean), but it doesn't for me.
I haven't added weblogic-ejb-jar.xml as I don't think it is going to help, as there is no global JNDI name defined. Am I missing some thing?

if you don't want to use @EJB to inject the EJB, then you'll need declare the EJB reference in deployment descriptor.
Here is an example copied from EJB3 spec:

of an EJB 3.0 session bean that provides a payroll

<ejb-ref-name>ejb/Payroll</ejb-ref-name>
<local>com.aardvark.payroll.Payroll</local>

then you can lookup the local ejb from "java:comp/env/ejb/Payroll".
