Partition is there, but Windows boot option is gone?

Hey folks, I'm having a small issue with bootcamp.
Not too long ago did I have Windows running just fine on my Mac; everything was up to date, I managed to install 7 and upgrade to 8.1 just fine. Everything was good until one evening I open my Mac up, there is a command line that states "no bootable device." I don't believe I had installed Yosemite because last time I shut the Mac it was in Windows. I found a thread from another user here, and followed LonerT's suggestions and managed to get Windows back as a boot option, but the command line still pops up with "non-system disk."
The bootcamp partition is still on my HD with everything installed, so if there's some way I could get this back to how it was without having to go through the hassle of erasing the partition and starting anew I would be greatly appreciative.
Thanks!

Whoa, LonerT!?
Certainly, here are the results of the commands:

I thought the corestorage command was a bit odd so I looked around the web to find out what it means. It doesn't sound promising.
As for you question on "what modifications were made to get [the drive] bootable again:"
I followed these instructions you gave in that thread listed above...
Here is an example.

Saying the Windows is bootable may be a bit subjective; the option appeared after this example you gave, but it won't boot into Windows.

Amy, is there a chance they could both be Syncing to another device that has the data erased?
What are the sizes & modification dates on the files you found?
Could be many things, we should start with this to be safe, though 2 different ones would seem unlikely to be this problem...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at the top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

  • I reinstalled osx 10.8.2 from recovery disk, now verify disk says my hard drive is there but wont boot into it regardless which partition i select to boot into , everytime it boots me into the recovery, i need help!

Mb pro running like garbage with 10.8.2 tried a reinstall of osx from recovery utility now the utility says my hard drive is ok but wont boot into it keeps booting me back into recovery tried restart option to select disk tried using the select startup disk from recovery, gives a message asking if i really want to boot to it and in that message is the only rime it shows a question mark on the drive dont know what to do cant find similar issue

Your rushing and not making much sense.
Your machine was running like garbage, so you tried to reinstall 10.8---did you do this or not?
Disk Utility says your drive is ok, that's good.
But when you boot it keeps booting Recovery HD, so perhaps the firmware has made a mistake, it can forget.
You held the option key down to boot into Startup Manager, why didn't you select OS X for the boot volume?
When you get into OS X you change the Startup Disk in System Preferences, that should take care of the Flashing Question mark issue.
attemtping to ireinstall osx from recovery partition bar is full on install screen, but im now at -6hours remaining
So now your reinstalling OS X like you set out to do before, it does take some time as it has to download from Apple's servers.
If your Internet connection is slow and/or Wifi is slow then it will take awhile.
So you should have the Flashing Question Mark and Reinstall Only OS X covered.
You should be able to boot the machine, but your performance issues may be something else and still remain.

  • [MSI P67A-GD65]. Quick and dirty question: Is there a Windows 8 option?

    Hello everyone,
I have a P67A-GD65(b3), with a Sapphire R9 280x with a GOP Bios. Windows 8.1 are installed in a gpt partition, the Windows Boot Manager is booting the machine. I have the latest beta bios installed (E7681.443).
My question is: Does this bios have the Windows 8 options (like fast/secure boot etc)?
I can't seem to be able to find them anywhere.
Are these options supported with another bios?
The bios is flashed using the forum tool, and all the relevant instructions (remove power, reset etc).
    Thanks in advance.

hi hpstg, did u run good on windows 7 with latest bios for your mobo and your amd gpu ?
im having issues with my amd 7950 gpu...  with latest mobo bios beta....   i get intermitint crashes...
This has nothing to do with the OP's question.
As for his question, I do not see any win 8 features on that board. I may be wrong, but if there were, somewhere in the bios release notes you would see "Win 8 Support"

  • Windows boot option icon disappear!

Hi, I successfully installed Windows XP SP2 with bootcamp.
I started successfully Leopard and Windows many times, then I installed VMWARE Fusion and I choose to use the fisical Windows partition as a virtual machine.
Now I can choose to start windows or leopard only from bootcamp options in the preference of leopard or systemtray in windows: pressing "alt" button at startup shows me only MacOSX System and disappear windows disk Icons....
How can i reconfigure boot option to show the windows icon too ? I don't want to reinstall beacuse it runs correctly ! it seems only a boot configuration...
The console of leopard report something as com.appl.system service xml boot options do not match...
Sorry for my bad english and thanks in advance for your help!

I guess, I have to explain more...
I know the way of selecting the boot drive( the way you mentioned)... My problem is after creating new partition with disk utility... I cann't any more boot to Win at startup. It seems that the Win startup partition is removed, but when I check it from OS in my FINDER, I can see the bootcamp partition and all my date inside..
So, I need to know how can I again activate booting option to Win at startup(or something like this)

  • OS X System partition trashed? (but Windows sees it fine)

A few hours ago, I inserted a Leopard install CD in an attempt to install 10.5 to a USB drive. When OS X (10.7.3) rebooted, it never made it past the grey screen (didn't even get to the apple). After about 5m of no activity, I assumed a kernel panic and forced a restart. Ever since, I've been completely unable to access the partition from anything Apple-based. Attempts to mount in Disk Utility from the recovery partition fail miserably. Verify and Repair might as well be two rocks I'm banging together. Booting in Target Mode did absolutely nothing when connected to my MBP with a FW800 cable. Resetting the PRAM was entirely ineffective. I can't even unmount the volume when booted from a clone to attempt to reinstall. Restoration from a TM backup is pointless as the old system partition is not acknowledged as a vaiable install path. I thought all was lost until...
I booted into Windows (Boot Camp) and browsed the partition. All of my files are there, fully instact. I can browse any number of random files and view them (within the limits of the Windows OS) with no troubles. As far as Windows is concerned, absolutely nothing appears to be wrong with the volume, but OS X can't even scan it, much less allow me to browse. It's all rather perplexing, as I can't even delte the OS X partition in Disk Utility. Does anyone have an idea of what's happened?
PS My iMac IS one of the models slated for the Seagate HDD recall, but the fact that Windows (on the same drive) can boot and browse the OS X partition makes me think the issue's not hardware).

What happens if you run a partition map health check from Windows? What happens if you try a Repair on the OSX partition?

  • Recovery partition is there but recovery won't start

    Hi,
When trying to restore the factory image (F11 during boot), the laptop seems like it is trying to boot the missing Windows installation (Windows boot manager error page).
The partitions "SYSTEM", "HP_RECOVERY" and "HP_TOOLS" have not been touched. The ~15 GB recovery files are still there!
The Windows partition (2nd primary) has been deleted and recreated as an NTFS partition. Since then the recovery process will not start.
How can I restore the system from my intact HP_RECOVERY partition without using recovery DVDs? (I can't access them right now.)
Does the Windows partition need some specific disk label? What is the magic that breaks the recovery when a NTFS partition is simply deleted and recreated?

    erico,
One more thing. You wrote "if I format my notebook's hard disk". Just to prevent misunderstandings: I did not format the whole hard disk. It is only the Windows partition that has been recreated. The other three partition (HP_RECOVERY, HP_TOOLS and SYSTEM) haven't been formatted.
If you format any partition on the hard drive it removes the active flag for the recovery partition and then F11 won't  invoke the Recovery Manager during a startup of the notebook.

  • Satellite C660 - recovery partition is there but can I make back up discs?

    Hi all
    Just a query
My GF turned on her laptop Satellite C660 series and it would not boot up, we tried to initiate the recovery sequence from the recovery partition but kept getting the error that was on boot up (the error was telling us a USB device had been unplugged).
As you probably guessed she never made the back-up discs when prompted, all I could think of was using a win 7 disc and reload that way then try and make the recovery discs after (I didn't activate)
so win 7 was installed nicely and all drivers sourced that was all last week.
Now for the crunch , the recovery partition is there can I now make the recovery discs and install from those , the win 7 I installed will soon require activation
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance

Recovery discs can be created with preinstalled Toshiba recovery disc creator and this tool is available when notebook is preinstalled with original OS from Toshiba. Additional download and usage is not possible.
As Terentino already wrote best thing you can do now is to order original recovery disc from Toshiba. It costs a bit but at least it is the best solution for you.
Next time if there is some problem, dont act before you post here. ;) I hope we can help you with some good and useful advice.
    Good luck.

  • My Edits are there, but 'Revert to Original' has gone

    Sorry, yet another iPhoto problem
I've noticed that though all my recent iPhoto edits are still there, the 'Revert to Original' has gone, for all of them. And the sliders - which should be in their post-edit positions - are all at zero or default.
I tested this by duplicating a recent edit, editing it dramatically (full saturation and colour temperature), came out of Edit, and went back in - no clickable Revert, and all sliders back in their default positions. I checked in the menu, and Revert to Original was greyed out.
I then went into Edit mode and flicked back through the Library. Occasionally the Revert to Original button was clickable, but as far as I can remember, those were all edits done ages ago in a previous version of iPhoto (and maybe not all of them?).
I thought iPhoto '11 kept track of editing adjustments, i.e. it was non-destructible editing? I appear to have a version that saves and preserves the edit(s), but overwrites the original.

Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    https://discussions.apple.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-20276325-17180 0/open.PNG
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
    https://discussions.apple.com/servlet/JiveServlet/downloadImage/2-20276325-17180 2/iPhotolibcontents.PNG
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
Sorry, I got your email but your reply hasn't appeared in the Discussions (NOW it has! just when I post the reply..), so I've pasted it here (hope you didn't mind).
Anyway, since then, when everything else failed, I did already have a look inside the Package, and there I saw all my Original and Modified versions, so I knew they were still there. It's just a case of why iPhoto isn't offering to Revert to them.
Ok, I have some questions about your latest advice (which is going to be a BIG JOB!!).
When you say Metadata, do you mean I will lose all the camera's EXIF data (that normally shows if you click Info)?
What about Ratings? One of the big exercises I'm currently currently halfway through - 4,500 photos! - is rating them all - will I lose all the ratings?
When you say drag Originals / Masters to the new Library, what about Modified? Remember, I can see all my edits - they are in the Library, it's just that I can't Revert to Original in many cases. If I don't drag the Modifieds over, won't I lose all my edits? (I'd rather lose the Originals!)
When you say drag the subfolders, they are nested several deep, e.g. 2013 > 09 > 20 > 20130920-193215 > (a bunch of picture files). Do I have to recreate the directory structure, or could I just drag 2013 > 09 in one go, with everything inside it? And would I have to create 2013 folder first, then drag all of 09 into that?
Sorry to fire so many questions at you - it's a big undertaking. (I might find in the long run, that if ever I want an Original back, I should just Open the Package and retrieve it manually, so it duplicates rather than Reverts. It's not something I do except once in a blue moon, so I might decide to live with the current situation... )
Anyway, let me know what you think : it's either undertake this major task, or live without being able to Revert To Original from within iPhoto itself.

  • Partitioning ruined windows booting

I have installed windows using Bootcamp, but then I created more partitions using Mac OS X.
Now I cannot boot into windows again. The partition is there, but it won't show up when I hold (Options). Only the Mac OS shows up.
I went to System Preferences->Startup Disk and selected Windows to boot, and still won't work.
How can this be fixed ?
    Macbook Pro
    Mac OS X Snow Leopard
    Windows 7 Ultimate.

    Happens all the time.
There is a limit to where a Windows boot partition can reside and all the side effects of making changes. ... because you assumed it would work and went "outside the draw by the dots" lines in the Boot Camp Guide.
http:www.apple.com/support/bootcamp has link to PDF guide and support articles.
this is one case where the results are almost always failure.  And plan on what to do, when it doesn't work so you can restore - something that even using Mac OS should be seen as mandatory and not to be taken lightly.
"I created more partitions" doesn't help or tell anyone how (shrink, split, expand, used commercial program, used gpart, used a linux tool), as well as created HFS volumes? more Windows NtFS volume? Apple will only say that Boot Camp Assistant is the only supported method to create a Windows partiton (Paragon CampTune can also) doesn't change anything.
Did you use iPartition? I wonder if CampTune can redo/undo.
Clone Mac HFS and undo those changes. Use OS X DVD and Disk Utility as well as any of the programs to clone Mac.
    How To clone
Using Cloning as a Backup Strategy
Windows OS has to be on #4 or less partition number (and GPT and HFS as well as EFI partitions have to be accounted for as well, and Windows 7 will normally create its own 100MB "System Reserved" (which is the active boot partition for Windows).
Backup beforehand. Then you can restore and recover.
